I would like to see your ROB act as a traditional ROB, except with *much* faster movement and gameplay with his games. If possible, I'd like him to be able to do this with his projector, not requiring a CRT... though I grant that this may require some very difficult hacking. I'd also like to see your ROB be able to react to various NES games with his arms and body. Let him cheer your successes and sulk at your failures.
If we'd seen _anything_ like that, that would have been genuinely impressive. Even just making him work with modern screens would have be good. But this throws out R.O.B.'s original autonomy, limited though it was, entirely.
Hello, not to take from this (amazing project)…I am also a ROB modifier and had some different goals, but one was solving the gyromite issue on modern screens. It can be done, best by circumventing the flashing requirements and instead relying on user input that ROB can understand. You can find it on my channel but again not trying to divert, just love the innovation and keeping this guy going.
Excellent, this is what I like to see on this channel. You don't waste the time on tutorials about how to use tools and software, you just quickly describe the working principles. That's all I need to get inspired. Great work!
This is one of the best projects I've seen in a long while. It's cool to see this kind of engineering approach. Hopefully this project will see an update video one day.
I'm not exactly impressed, myself. Instead of restoring or improving on R.O.B.'s original independent functionality, it discards it entirely, turning him into nothing but a puppet the player has to control themselves.
Yes, I would've liked to see his ability to respond to screen inputs: re-mapped to his button function, but also for him to be trainable, and have intuitive ai which plays two player games with you like Mar-I/0
There's a point in this video where he finally acknowledges that what he's done is downright amazing :D up to that point it's like "I brushed my teeth, did an amazing thing, then another amazing thing then I went sleep again as you do"
So cool to see and old robot bought up to date and useable again. I have a ROB in the RobotHut and 1 I think in my robot junk parts bin. May have to try a mods myself. Thanks for posting !
He _didn't_ bring him up to date. This R.O.B. can't actually do what the original did at all anymore, at least judging by this video. Instead of him responding to the game on his own, you have to tell him to hit the buttons yourself.
This is the kind of rebuild for ROB for a Long time! I always imagined a ROB that functions a bit like the one from smash bros with mobility maybe with wheels under the base, and maybe a laser pointer in the eyes, very fantastical I know. Anyway, Very Cool build!
Not speaking ill of Ben, as he inspired me in his own way, but I'm loving the direction this channel is going. Ben got repetitive. It was a game of "How many different consoles can we make portable". Loving these new videos. Fresh talent and fresh ideas.
No, now R.O.B. is a glorified shell for a voice-control system who doesn't so much as mime a button-press or take any gameplay action on his own like he originally did.
This is AMAZING! I was looking to buy a ROB to rebuild with a PI maybe make him faster, add more usage to his arms, and probably mount him on a some motors for mobility. But I found a free Radio Shack Robie SR that I saved from recycling, he already has mobility and is WAY larger so I can cram the whole projector in his head plus maybe a few other functions into the body. Like some servos to move his arms, new functional hands, and a camera for video.
this is great,.. if you could add a base with (remote) controlled wheels "ROB come here !!" And out comes your 33 year old "Family Computer Robot". Ready to play games like he never played games before.
No, what we want is to make R.O.B. work with modern TVs (and ideally, upgrade his motors so that he can do his thing faster and more fluidly). This trash downgrades R.O.B. into an fancy version of hitting the buttons on Controller 2 yourself, throwing out his autonomous response function entirely. It doesn't even have the decency to give the illusion that R.O.B. is playing along!
if you can get the camera in and find a low enough footprint trainable bot i imagine you could skip voice recognition and have him instead identify what's on the screen and respond to that, reducing a good chunk of delay and mistakes
the most exciting day of my childhood might have getting a r.o.b. nes for my bday. it became sort of a let down too though :( it should have talked moved around and been able to play any game as a second player. if it were redone in the upcoming years it could be a totally better thing. it could have superior AI say on the level of cleverbot at least.. talking and responding would be a must. tank treads on its underside would do well to make him move around. without changing the aesthetics too much it could have some sort of ability to hold a controller and push a few buttons. it would be great because i used to love 2 player games as a kid and i can play single player ones sometimes now im older but if r.o.b. were improved it could be a massively helpful thing. alsi i would like it if he could clean up little messes for me. and simple chores like changing the cat litter lol.. sth tells me the tech phobic world we live in is mostly the reason we cant have our own r.o.b.b that does all that. well cost too. nintendo will hopefully one day make a truly great r.o.b. thats truly helpful so that nearly everyone wants one.
I was kind of hoping you would update the shoulder and arm motors to be faster maybe, but this was pretty fantastic! I could see Nintendo selling something like this
Also, if you want him to make any noises for when you give him a command, I would recommend ripping some files from Super Smash Bros, because they actually give ROB a funny lil' chiptune voice that would be perfect for this project
R.O.B. should get a treaded vehicle that he can sit atop to make him mobile. Voice commands like "ROB - GO FORWARD" and "ROB - TURN LEFT" should control the treads. Two Servos, 3-d printed body, treads made from o-ring belts or the like. Include a battery to power R.O.B. inside the enclosure that connects to the DC jack and he's rollin'!
Gyromite was so frustrating. Glad to see 40 years of technological improvement has made it close to playable. If you want the true Gyromite experience you have to have him only hold the button for so long. You could have Rob do a little celebration when he gets you killed. It could be triggered when he hears you yell Rob no!
1. 35 years, not 40. And oly 33 at the time of recording. 2. _What_ technological improvement? All he's *really* doing is hitting the buttons on Controller 2 himself, which you could do just fine back when the game was new; you just had to use your hand or foot instead of your voice. It's not like he made R.O.B. able to grab, spin up, and place the gyros faster! _That_ would be technological improvement. Instead, R.O.B. no longer responds autonomously at all or even pretends to.
This is damn cool. You actually made R.O.B. usable! I remember my friend had this thing and after getting it to sort-of work I was really underwhelmed.
He made R.O.B. "usable" by taking away the aspects that make him R.O.B. in the first place and reducing him to a glorified puppet that the player has to control themselves. IMO, taking R.O.B. from "Robot that responds to the game on his own and hits the buttons on Controller 2 in a somewhat overcomplicated way" to "Overcomplicated way to hit the buttons on Controller 2 yourself that doesn't respond to the game at all or even move its arms to pretend to be playing alongside you" is a *downgrade*
would be so cool if you could make R.O.B. a real moving robot like he was on Super smash bros brawl , like moving around with wheels underneath his body, laser pointer as his "weapon" and of course with spinner thingy.Would be neat to see this little fellow move around and pick up things
It would be even cooler if he could actually respond on his own like he originally did. This R.O.B. isn't even the limited automaton a stock one is, he's nothing but a voice-activated puppet.
Does anyone know what that UV box is called? I googled “UV light box” and only found nail salon stuff. I’m looking for one for myself for the same purpose .
I checked out his GitHub linked on element14.com. Very legit BOM, 3D files, and code. Great contribution to the future Makers of the world. Great work, Mike.
This is super-good. An amazing hack, obviously an inspired design that had a lot of planning put into it, and even the perfect amount of regrettable acting (Don't worry, it's only where you intended it)! Only critique is that I would have liked a bit more explanation of the overall goal or vision of the revamp at the beginning of the video. I definitely want to see more from you, good sir!
Connect with Mike and view the parts required to make this project on the element14 community: bit.ly/2OX0y8k
You're awesome. Not only you make something spectacular, but also provide the necessary means to make it. You've got a new follower.
Um sir, Are you a student of the 8bit guy who invented retrobrite?
Why would I want to? This is crap.
I would like to see your ROB act as a traditional ROB, except with *much* faster movement and gameplay with his games. If possible, I'd like him to be able to do this with his projector, not requiring a CRT... though I grant that this may require some very difficult hacking.

Holy crap, dude! That was AMAZING! Looking forward to seeing more of your stuff!
Finally something Ben Heck like.
Just what I thought.
That’s sweet. The level of detail... Melting a crayon for the numbers? Brilliant.
Excellent, this is what I like to see on this channel.
You don't waste the time on tutorials about how to use tools and software, you just quickly describe the working principles. That's all I need to get inspired.
Great work!
Fantastic work Mike! This was such a blast to see come together.
Keep this guy on the show, I finally watched a full video on this channel.
Great to see my RoadTest review being useful for such an awesome project :)
Thanks for sharing your findings Frederick, it really helped.
Finally something Ben Heck worthy!
This is one of the best projects I've seen in a long while. It's cool to see this kind of engineering approach. Hopefully this project will see an update video one day.

@@ZeldaTheSwordsman That's what the original Rob did lol
@@kenmarkollano5795 No, the original R.O.B. could also receive input from the game that wasn't player-generated. Enemies could mess with him
Wow! Coincidentally, I have been working on a ROB repair myself, but just to stock operating condition.....this is a bad ass project! Well done!
Your project is a million times better IMO.
@@ZeldaTheSwordsman Hey, thanks!!! 💪
Great work Mike! You brought me back to this channel.
Nice million dollar man reference! Thumbs up for anything video game related!

Or maybe Sonic the Hedgehog
@@calebbennetts7203 why sonic?
@@CatShapedDonut Dr Robotnick?
This was an amazing upgrade!
Amazing video, I really want to try.. but as a novice, at 9:33 you jumped a big step there, is there a more in depth look or diagram?
Yes, I would've liked to see his ability to respond to screen inputs: re-mapped to his button function, but also for him to be trainable, and have intuitive ai which plays two player games with you like Mar-I/0

This is AMAZING! Feeling hugely inspired to do some good old fashioned British tinkering!
now all we need is ROB 2.0, now equipped with lasers! he's become a defence system.
It would be awesome to make ROB automatically play duck hunt. Have ROB auto detect the duck, move, aim and fire the zapper gun.
Well, you won't see that from this bozo. This R.O.B. doesn't do _anything_ automatically anymore.
First R.O.B. gets a subspace bomb. Now R.O.B. has a gun.
So cool to see and old robot bought up to date and useable again. I have a ROB in the RobotHut and 1 I think in my robot junk parts bin. May have to try a mods myself. Thanks for posting !

Nice R.O.B. Rebuilt Operating Buddy
Oh please, he took the Buddy out entirely.
Now that's how ROB should be played with. Much more fun.
R.O.B. Mains: (happy noises)
Meh.
How come no one has ever made a bigger or human-sized version of R.O.B.? He deserves love equally as R2D2 or Optimus Prime 😁
This is the kind of rebuild for ROB for a Long time! I always imagined a ROB that functions a bit like the one from smash bros with mobility maybe with wheels under the base, and maybe a laser pointer in the eyes, very fantastical I know. Anyway, Very Cool build!
The monocle camera actually looks cool. Nice job on the mod.
Not speaking ill of Ben, as he inspired me in his own way, but I'm loving the direction this channel is going. Ben got repetitive. It was a game of "How many different consoles can we make portable". Loving these new videos. Fresh talent and fresh ideas.
Great in-depth video, thank you!
If possible could you get rob to play games by himself like add fingers or something to rob to allow him to use the controllers for nes
Awesome !!! Now R.O.B works like it should have .
No, now R.O.B. is a glorified shell for a voice-control system who doesn't so much as mime a button-press or take any gameplay action on his own like he originally did.
Dude you're a genius! i laughed at your UV light comment lol. "UV light from the sun is quite rare" That's just an English overcast.

great job its like alexa for gaming
For Gyromite you should had the keyword press red or blue and release red or blue. It would be less confusing.
Great job. Love it.
Need more content like this.
You should make it full printable.
Wow. Engineering, Desgin, Coding, Creativity all top notch! Video great too . : )
Freaking sick bro to bad his body couldn’t move as fast as his head
That’s a tricky challenge. The internals of ROB are truly unique and fairly complex. It would require further re-engineering of the mechanical parts.
Dude, thats amazing
That really makes R.O.B. functional
How about mounting it on a Roomba and having a ROB and a Rosie?
No it doesn't, it throws out R.O.B.'s autonomous functionality entirely.
Nice, it'd be nice to change the motors in the middle so hes faster, stronger, and quieter.
Yes, well, sadly this smeghead wasn't actually trying to improve R.O.B.'s actual independent functionality.
this is great,..
if you could add a base with (remote) controlled wheels
"ROB come here !!"
And out comes your 33 year old "Family Computer Robot".
Ready to play games like he never played games before.
I really enjoyed this video, good job man!
Very cool! Maybe change the words to lower orange and lower blue and raise orange and raise blue. It may make it easier.
I didn't know I was subbed to this channel but when I saw a video about my favorite robot getting a revamp I was excited.
same dude.
And how did it feel when this supposed "upgrade" completely removed R.O.B.'s independent functionality, primitive though it was?
Man I wish that somebody could do this with my Family Computer Robot.
Quality project! This is what the community wants.
No, what we want is to make R.O.B. work with modern TVs (and ideally, upgrade his motors so that he can do his thing faster and more fluidly).

Fantastic work. Not enough views on this. No idea why.
It's crap that throws in a bunch of fancy RC features at the expense of what made R.O.B. himself.
How about 3d printable models so we can print our own R.O.B. pieces :)
B.O.M. and code and STLs are all in the Element14 community link in the description.

R.O.B. will need a good AI for conversations.
Well, you won't be seeing that from this guy. This guy threw out what AI R.O.B. originally had and replaced it with nothing.
Great job!
You might have better flexibility with the wires by making your own cables with some scrap Ethernet and shrink tubing.
thanks, I might try something like that if I ever go back and re-wire him :)
Nintendo needs to make a new and improved rob for the switch..
