    The pancakes on the label of the pancake mix are typical English pancakes, that are very similar to crêpes. American pancakes are just bigger versions of Scottish pancakes. It’s kind of one of those situations where you have to bear in mind that the UK is actually four different countries in a political union. So not everything is UK centric, some things are more prevalent in one or more of the countries than it is in the others.
    When I was a kid in Scotland Golden Wonder were the most common brand of crisps…as well as being the creator of Pot Noodles…but by the early to mid 90’s Walkers were the ones that were everywhere.
    Also when I was a kid (I was born in the mid 70’s) the likes of Transform-a-snacks and Space Raiders (as well as a few other similar snacks) were 5p a bag. So if you were lucky enough to be given 10p for sweets, you could at one point get a small bag of crisps and up to 20 individual sweets (when we still had the half pence and there were some sweets that were 2 for a ha’penny), which seemed like such a bounty for a young child.

    • @alisonrodger3360
      @alisonrodger3360 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I still prefer Golden Wonder to Walkers...agonising over the perfect penny mix 😁

    • @lynnejamieson2063
      @lynnejamieson2063 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@alisonrodger3360 I still prefer Golden Wonder too but they’re not always that easy to find in England, even where I am in the North East there’s only a handful of shops that stock them.
      With the two for a ha’penny sweets, you could easily have a bit of everything it used to be two Blackjacks or Fruit Salads for a ha’penny and the little Highland Toffees were the same but there were also some jelly sweets and if I remember correctly the chocolate cups were a ha’penny each (I think, I never really liked them) but then when the half pence was taken out of circulation everything that’d been a ha’penny became a penny. So it was two for a penny instead of four, instantly cutting our possible bounty in half.

    Had the Lays forest mushroom from one of the European shops that I have locally. They sell a lot of polish, Lithuanian, Romanian, Dutch or German snacks. They were weird at first but reminded me of the instant mushroom soup that you get either in hot drinks machines or as a “cuppa soup” sachet. My ultimate favourite of the international snacks from such shops are paprika Polish crisps or the Dutch/German peanut butter puffs. They are amazing and remind me of my childhood- my dad’s friend used to bring me lots of European snacks from when he was working (a lorry driver). Now, In part they also remind me of my dad too. I only lost him a few days ago as I write and they were the only crisps apart from walkers salt and vinegar that he enjoyed eating.

    Yeah we call crepes pancakes in the UK and on pancake day (shrove Tuesday, last day before lent) we eat pancakes with freshly squeezed lemon juice and sugar and they're freaking delicious! We also call it Duct tape too but also call it Gaffer tape. Redcurrant jelly is a common condiment usually eaten with savoury foods, roast meats, cold cuts and cheeses etc. I have a redcurrant, White currant and Blackcurrant bush in my back garden, they're all lovely. Lemon curd is to die for, on hot buttered toast it's delicious but a lemon curd tart is to die for, so so so good! And Scampi Fries are just the best pub snack ever devised, please drink a pint of beer when you try them!

    Just FYI regarding the pancakes guys - you can put anything sweet on them (honey, syrup, nutella, any jam, sugar and lemon juice etc;) just don't eat them plain. Once you've added your 'topping', slide the pancake between the tines of a fork and twist to roll them up and then its easier to eat. The syrup cake will be better if it and the custard are warm/hot too.

    FYI: DUCK TAPE is often called DUCT tape (or even GAFFER tape), but the original name comes from 'cotton duck' or 'duck canvas' which was a tightly woven fabric to make tents, sandbags and similar products. It could have wax added to make it waterproof. The name comes from the Dutch 'doek' (linen canvas). Used by the British and French soldiers serving in the tropics. Duck strips were in the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) since the late 1800's. The fabric had adhesive added and was called DUCK TAPE, but MANY mistaking refer to it as DUCT tape (believing it was used to seal any type of 'ducking'). You are welcome. 😊

    English Pancakes (and I think Irish Pancakes) are slightly thicker than Crepes, but much thinner than American Pancakes, which are more like Scotch Pancakes (Drop Scones) and Welsh Pancakes (Crempogau (singular Crempog)).
    My recipe for English Pancakes is very simple, and the identical batter is used for Yorkshire Pudding or Toad In The Hole, just cooked differently.
    Equal amounts by volume of Plain Flour, Eggs, Milk, plus optionally a pinch of Salt. Whisk together the flour and eggs until lump-free, then add the milk, and whisk until fully combined.
    Allow to rest at room temperature for about 30 minutes before use.
    To make Pancakes, use a medium-high-preheated lightweight frying pan/skillet, lightly greased with Butter, pour/ladle batter into the pan and tilt in different directions until it covers the whole base of the pan thinly.
    Cook until the batter has just set on top (the underside should be starting to brown in places), then flip and cook for a minute or so more.
    For Yorkshire Pudding and Toad In The Hole, set the oven to high, and preheat the roasting pan/muffin tins/baking dish along with high-heat-stable fat (animal fats like Lard, Beef Dripping etc are best and most traditional), and sausages (links) for "Toad".
    Once the fat is nice and hot, working as quickly as possible, add the room temperature batter to the hot oil, get it back into the oven, and keep the oven closed until ready to remove, as opening the door can cause them to drop.
    If using muffin tins, cook for about 15 minutes, for larger dishes or "Toad" cook for about 25-30 minutes.
    Try eating the Pancakes or leftover Yorkies with the Jam.

    It's not surprising that the Lays bag is in a language you don't immediately recognise. In the UK, the PEPSICO originated snacks are marketed under the 'Walkers' brand name; in the USA (and some nations on this side of the Atlantic,) PEPSICO snacks carry the 'Lays' brand name. There are quite a few Asian and Eastern European communities in the UK, and in the stores run by and for those communities, they carry products from their 'home' nations. I've noticed lots of Lays snacks on sale there, and most of them aren't American.

      No definitely not, there’s also Walkers crisps here. Also in the Republic of Ireland, there’s Tayto , both are owned by Hutchison family. Tayto in the south only sell in south, however Tayto in the north is sold north and south. Tayto in South own Emerald park, while Tayto in the North own Tayto Castle .
      Tayto (Northern Ireland) was formed in 1956 by the Hutchinson family and licensed the name and recipes from Tayto Crisps formed two years prior in the Republic of Ireland. The two companies operate entirely separately but have a similar range of products.
