So many TH-camrs drive like grandmas on tracks and say it was exhilarating. Props for thrashing that car such that I can see you're moving fast on video. Keep it up
@@michaelsteffensen6844 Chris Harris is much better on his own. The format of Top gear that they just continued from the Clarkson days doesn't suit him at all. They honestly should've revamped the whole show.
Right? Take a look at David from Driving Experience (amazing channel) on his last video driving a Group B Rally Winner on the road. And driving it...not cruising :D
I still remember in 2007 the day my cousin sent me a message on MSN asking if I had heard the news. Seeing this hearing him say i would drive this flat out, with no doubt really brought a tear in my eye. Thanks for this video, made my day to see a part of McRae alive again.
Henry, I’ve followed your career since your early Evo days and can appreciate just how much this experience meant to you, thank you for making it possible for us to come along for the ride. Outstanding
I saw this very car back in the Safari in 97 back here in Kenya. On the day that WRC announces a return of the Safari Rally to the 2020 calendar i really appreciated this clip. Simply Brilliant!!
Special car - if in doubt, flat out - and boy did Colin make those cars dance. I still get goose bumps recalling the only stage of the RAC that crossed into Scotland when McRae won the WRC title in '95 we were spectating in the forest over a crest with a right, left, right fast chicane that was unsighted by the crest and Colin was visibly faster than all the top drivers and came into sight sideways ready for that first right with the car up on it's tip toes. Fabulous times thank you Henry for bringing it back to me watching this video.
The first generation Impreza was the best. That wicked rear wing still leaves me in awe. I can tell, this was a bucket list wish for Henry, he loved it.
I've owned a lot of fast cars and bikes but the best toy I ever had for pure exhilaration was a 98 WRX with $30K of mods. Ive always rated that experience at the top, way above road bikes, dirt bikes, skiing, snow boarding, bungee jumping, sky diving, hang gliding..... That amazing chapter ended in 2005 after I hit a tree wiping the entire right side out, another 1/2 foot across and I wouldn't be writing this.
The profile of those gravel tyres looks so high! Well done to this chap for keeping this piece of history alive. Love the line "If I had just one more tank of fuel..."
Carfection has got to be without a shadow of a doubt the best motoring channel on youtube at the moment, Ive yet to see Henry do a bad video. Id love to see an all new motoring show with Henry, Mr JWW, Chris Harris and Jethro Bovingdon.
The title of the video gave me goose bumps, that car passed me in transition from Silverstone super special stage to the M1 (A43) on the way to the next stage (I think Birmingham not sure a while ago) doing exactly 70mph on a dual carriageway and every single driver that wasn't in a rally car did 50-60 mph on inside lane just so we could see . Special memory.
What a machine, you lucky lucky man. That is one of the big differences between older and more modern cars - I had my 02 WRX for fourteen years and the approach angle on a corner was out wide, throttle, turn in. Modern cars with electronic clutch packs allow you to take a normal line and bury it into the corners like physics doesn't matter. In fact if you tried that out wide, throttle and turn in, in something like an RS you'd be eating hedge. Another great video.
The mid-90s was magical for racing. Superbikes, (WSB), cars...... Everything was just so much more exciting. So glad I had the privilege of growing up in that era.
I went to pick up a dishwasher for my daughter and the bloke had two of Colin McRae’s cars in his garage. One Subaru and the other was his ford focus. They looked beautiful. A clutch for the focus was £12k. This bloke was in communication with Colin’s dad.👍
The intro!!! I'm not even one minute into the video and absolutely amazed. The link from past to present with a drift with the logo transition. I'm actually standing up applauding. Well done gentleman, well done!
Mr. Henry Catchpole, you sir are the luckiest man alive to have such a massive opportunity to drive the best Subaru bar none in the world and the envy of every male rally fan in the world, you have just won your bucket list lottery, thank you and much gratitude for bringing this video to fruition to all humble subscribers, freaking awesome👍
Thank you Mr Catchpole and Co. (just living vicariously through Harry's drives). Takes me back to my youth, care free days, when i would avidly follow all motorsport on tv.
Wow, what a car and what a pedigree. We talk about the legend who is McRae, but let's not forget the army of people that brought this wonderful machine to life. We salute you all.
I saw McRae wrc Subaru 1997! I clicked as fast as I can! Dude a f...... Legend! Thank you for giving the passion of Subaru's car! It's my 9th Subaru and I own 😂
I have always been a Mitsubishi Evo kind of guy (own one) and Tommi Makinen fan, but have always had massive respect for the Subaru Impreza WRC car and Colin McRae. Group A rally was the best form of rallying in my opinion, and always had me glued to the TV screen as a teenager. Watching the Evo v Impreza v Celica v Escort v Delta face-off was epic. Awesome video!
Great Video. All I will say is I've had my original classic shape Impreza for 20 years as my daily drive and it still puts a big smile on my face every time I take her out.
This is the first ever moment where I wanted Henry to not talk anymore and just drive! Drive it like its always meant to be!😍 Pllleeease post some uncut footage of the in car camera. Pretty please with cherrys on top. 😀😉

This gave me goosebumps. Fantastic film, great editing and just enough sound to make me want to dip into TH-cam’s rabbit-hole of WRC footage. Thanks, Henry!
AMAZING ! Henry you may have done more elaborate reviews, but this one is probably one of the most emotional and I loved it ! This is the car that really drove me into rallying as well. Hats off for the claim « if I would have one last tank of gas » ! Excellent shots by your videographer as well. Thanks for this superb content !
I'm Indonesian and I love McRae with his Subaru drove into the forest and mud in Rally Indonesia WRC '97. There were few accident that cannot be forgotten, and I was 2 years old. And then i replicated his moves in Colin Mcrae Rally in my PS One. A very memorable moment.
Henry, Carfection and Max G. , thank you so much for this. This piece is truly your best so far. Loved the slide in the opening sequence. Could watch hours worth of b-roll... just saying...
Late 90's nostalgia gives a lovely warm feeling in the pit of my stomach... Seeing the 22B on the streets back then was something special and of course the revolutionary motorcycle back then was the Yamaha R1... Good times!
I got to drive a race prepped clone of this car and it was shocking how quickly and beautifully it responded and communicated. It's been 20 years and I still think of that care regularly. Lovely machines.
Well done Henry, what a fitting piece to bring to the masses, the emotion and tactility of such an iconic car, the fact that Colin had sat in that exact seat before you must have brought a tear to your eye. Thankyou for your efforts in bringing this wonderful piece of history to our screens.
It's this car that made me go and get my own 'dream' car, but it had to be a Forester XT for the family space. However it's still got 200kw at the wheels, rear 1.5 way plated LSD which locks under power, 20kg Sti rally centre diff and Sti helical front LSD and a Sti Tyre RA Spec C steering rack with a 13:1 ratio. With a 2" lift and all terrain tyres, it's an absolute weapon on gravel and rough surfaces. 0-100 on gravel in 5 secs, so much grip when sliding through corners under power. Just a blast to drive!
I don't usually comment on TH-cam videos but this one gave me the goosebumps. Nice one. Guess I'll start my marathon of old wrc videos now. Who needs to pass their exams right??
That last tank of fuel remark got me close to tears. Favorite memory of my Subaru is power sliding down mountain hairpins with clouds literally coming in one window and out the other.
This may have been a fairly quickfire video, but I was grinning ear-to-ear nonetheless! Wonderful. I too grew up watching McRae in blue with gold wheels, and I'm glad you've shown the car to us like this.
