Got a C4 in 2007 because of Loeb winning on WRC and looking good while doing it. 15 years later, I have zero regrets! I still love how it looks on the road and for a 15 year old car, it still looks as good as more modern models.

Driving with Loeb must have been crazy... I am 26 now and I remember all of his championship after championships. One of the GOATs for sure, every rally driver must have been delighted when he retired. I drove on the Val Thorens ice driving course a couple of years ago and the instructor there told me Loeb used to drive there and practice a lot. He said I just missed him with a day, then we went to the restaurant they said the same thing and I was super sad not meeting such a legend.
If the unit is from 2008 it is still powered by the old PSA XU family engine, which was used in the Xsara T4 WRCs, it was actually a 1.8 l version (XU 7, specifically a XU7JP4) raising the displacement to 2.0 l. (1,998 cm3), lengthening the cylinder stroke. It was an engine from the same family as the Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 (XU 8T). Obviously much more current, with much more advanced electronics, and with a smaller turbo with the regulation 34 mm flange. Since 2009 season onwards, it already used the most modern EW family engine that was used in the series, and which premiered with the Peugeot 206 in 1998.
It's really interesting how the XU had just long enough career to have this connection. Also to think that in between it also saw (very different) use in the high-revving F2 Kit Cars and Super Touring cars.

In the case of the 306 Maxi, it was XU10 J4RS version, derived from the latest street versions of the XU family, which also equiped 405 T16 (XU10 J4TE version) that replaced the 1,905 cm3 XU9 that equiped the 405 Mi 16, 309 GTI16 and Citroën BX GTI 16V (XU9 J4 version). Also note that from this XU9 came the one that mounted 405 Turbo 16 of Pikes Peak and Paris-Dakar with the name of XU9T that in the most performance version of Pikes Peak yielded between 660 and 700 HP, although at more than 4,000 meters. of height of the famous ascent with lack of oxygen in the air the engines yielded much less power.

This car and Loeb Amazing work with it is The reason why I got the C4 VTR as my first car. I know the road car don't have a lot of the race car, but it was a nice feeling having the car that "based" one of the Best WRC cars Ever made. Absolutely loved my little Citroën, might get another one in a few years, but this time, a VTS.

Same here. The story about the original all-red livery, the mild dissing of the “C4 Loeb Edition” - I’ve heard that before. Can’t find it in the Carfection back catalogue though. Maybe they’ve pulled the original and this is a longer edit?

would have loved to see closer views and tricks in the engine bay and under the car to see chassis parts/suspension ,these are so rare to be closely examined...I know Seb Loeb had a very tight team of mechanics that he cherished ,they would take his car apart and re-check everything even if it was not needed ,come -up with smart little tricks & parts to give him even more reliability and performance....great video..

Because you can buy a road version of a WRC sti/evo. Unfortunately Citroen never decided to make a proper road rally car or even hot hatch for that matter, the closest they ever came was the DS3R

Homologation specials ended in 1997 with the WRC regulations, only mitsubishi used the old group a homologation until 2001, making the EVO 6.5 the last true rally homologation special. They're just selling you road car versions that look like their rally counterparts which only have the windshield and a few minor things in common.

Fantastic as usual Henry ,the C4 was the most buttoned down and well engineered car in the WRC in its day, Citroen always had a way with cars when it came to racing, point the C4 and there it goes, 👍
We got 3 brands in France and they all came on the top of the world, Renault in rally and F1, Peugeot in rally and Dakar and Pike peak, Citroën in rally and Dakar. So i would say it's not Just the brand but how are build performance car in our country. Maybe also cause we are Lucky to have proper pilots too. It's a combinaison of things i suppose. The other country that make performance and Light cars Is japan.

Goodonya Henry and co for yet another fabulous video, always love rallying and especially Seb . I still drive a 2002 206 GTi which I purchased after Gronholm won the WRC crown, and it’s still fun through twisty mountain roads.
Best carfection film so far!! Great driving, great filming and great flying! When driving between the stages on Rally GB, I still remember Loeb appearing out of nowhere in one of these, sliding around a mini round about and raced off to get to the start of the next stage. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

It incredible that a fairly modern rally car is already regarded as a rally classic. It goes without saying, considering how many rallies/championships it won but usually, you have to got back 20+ years before you start claiming cars as legendary.
This is a wonderful video, and a truly amazing car. But I must admit, I miss the days when rally cars didn’t look like econoboxes - the Alpine A110, Lancia Fulvia, Stratos, and 037 - these cars were not just dominant, but beautiful as well! PS - shout out to the drone pilot for some fancy flying!
I mean even during that time some of the most dominant rally cars looked like/were Econoboxes Mini Cooper, Ford Escort, Renault 5 Turbo, Abarth 131, Lancia Delta S4 and Peugeot 205 T16. Personally I like all the mentioned cars as well as the C4. Especially since C4 has that funky weird coupé hatchback roofline like a Honda CRX. Elevates it beyond something like a Citroen C2.

Big ol' Fan of Loeb since I was in early high school here, and a truly fan of Citroën also (I had 2 Xsaras VTS because I wanted to have at least the road version of the Car that make possible Loeb's 1st Title in the WRC :P) Amazing video, thank you and Thank you to the collectors that take care of these beauties and pieces of history of modern Rally racing :)
Loeb is just amazing. First time on the TV coverage I seen him, when he was instructed to secure second rather than risk failing aiming for a title, I knew he was going to win in future years. You could just see he was that much better a driver than others, and that's no disrespect to them. Great story by Henry, and description of how the car is inside and to drive. But just listening to it being driven was wonderful. That alone is so nice.
I know this car very well, a school friend of mine invented something called 'Kinetic Suspension' and ended up as a technical advisor to Citroen for five years that this car was unbeatable, the same suspension setup is standard on all Toyota Landcruisers, from 2 generations ago, still is. Great video Henry and crew! Cannot wait to see what you drive next. 1 million subscribers, what an indicator of the content on this channel. Oh yes, oh yes, oh yes, oh yes! Henry Catchpole, this is my favourite rally car together with the first Ford WRC of Sainz. I have worked in WRC for 6 years, and the new cars (then) were great. But this was a game changer! Well done!

Very interesting championship imo not least because of the 14km climb up Trento-Bondone "the European Pike's Peak". The cars in the open class are basically, modified production cars raced by privateers. The top 15 cars this year were : 15. Audi RS3 LMS 14. Lamborghini Huracan ST Evo 13. Opel Kadett GT/E 12. Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI 11. Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX 10. Ford Fiesta WRC Plus 09. Skoda Fabia R5 08. Ferrari 488 Challenge 07. Porsche 991.2 GT3 Cup 06. Lotus Exige Cup 260 05. VW Golf MK2 TFSi-R 04. Porsche 991.2 GT3 Cup 03. Porsche 981.2 GT3 Cup 02. Ferrari 488 Challenge Evo 01. FIAT X1/9 D2 I think this is interesting and also quite funny, in fact one of the comments says - imagine spending all that money and getting beaten by a Fiat ! As a die-hard X1/9 fan myself, I'm biased but clearly there's something pretty special about this one and of course it's driver and the team as well. Some people might remember, FIAT won the WRC once, in the early seventies with the 131 Abarth Rallye, then bought out Lancia and won with the Stratos, Beta 037, and Delta Integrale, then bought out Alfa Romeo and were successful in touring cars with the 155 D2 and then in DTM with the V6 SuperTurismo. The D2 engines from the 155 are incredibly rare and expensive, not to mention the Hewland or X-Trac sequential gearboxes they were used with. The Honda K20/K24 engine + Quaife transmission is the polar opposite of the D2 and is the most popular engine swap into an X1/9. Stance Works recently covered a time-attack build based on a Honda NSX with a heavily turbocharged K20 + SADEV transmission. As far as I know, nobody has put this combination into an X1/9 (yet) but the potential is undeniable. Anyway, going back to my original point... it may well be unbeatable but I guess we will never know! But I imagine it would be beaten on this particular stage, uphill on twisty tarmac... by that insane, little, blue wedge. I enjoyed the video, cheers, keep it up.

I have the road version of "this" car, for Brazil's market the C4 VTR (2008) is a great car.

It's a shame Citroen never capitalised on their rally success with hot road going C4s. Loeb is a living legend as his 2022 Monte Carlo win showed.

It incredible that a fairly modern rally car is already regarded as a rally classic. It goes without saying, considering how many rallies/championships it won but usually, you have to got back 20+ years before you start claiming cars as legendary.

This is a wonderful video, and a truly amazing car. But I must admit, I miss the days when rally cars didn’t look like econoboxes - the Alpine A110, Lancia Fulvia, Stratos, and 037 - these cars were not just dominant, but beautiful as well! PS - shout out to the drone pilot for some fancy flying!
I mean even during that time some of the most dominant rally cars looked like/were Econoboxes Mini Cooper, Ford Escort, Renault 5 Turbo, Abarth 131, Lancia Delta S4 and Peugeot 205 T16. Personally I like all the mentioned cars as well as the C4. Especially since C4 has that funky weird coupé hatchback roofline like a Honda CRX. Elevates it beyond something like a Citroen C2.

Big ol' Fan of Loeb since I was in early high school here, and a truly fan of Citroën also (I had 2 Xsaras VTS because I wanted to have at least the road version of the Car that make possible Loeb's 1st Title in the WRC :P) Amazing video, thank you and Thank you to the collectors that take care of these beauties and pieces of history of modern Rally racing :)
Loeb is just amazing. First time on the TV coverage I seen him, when he was instructed to secure second rather than risk failing aiming for a title, I knew he was going to win in future years. You could just see he was that much better a driver than others, and that's no disrespect to them. Great story by Henry, and description of how the car is inside and to drive. But just listening to it being driven was wonderful. That alone is so nice.

I know this car very well, a school friend of mine invented something called 'Kinetic Suspension' and ended up as a technical advisor to Citroen for five years that this car was unbeatable, the same suspension setup is standard on all Toyota Landcruisers, from 2 generations ago, still is. Great video Henry and crew! Cannot wait to see what you drive next. 1 million subscribers, what an indicator of the content on this channel. Oh yes, oh yes, oh yes, oh yes! Henry Catchpole, this is my favourite rally car together with the first Ford WRC of Sainz. I have worked in WRC for 6 years, and the new cars (then) were great. But this was a game changer! Well done!

One of my neighbours used to have one of these and the first time I saw it, I instantly thought it was a rally bred car just by the look of it, I was still surprised when I found out that it actually had heritage to it.

Very interesting championship imo not least because of the 14km climb up Trento-Bondone "the European Pike's Peak".

I think this is interesting and also quite funny, in fact one of the comments says - imagine spending all that money and getting beaten by a Fiat !
As a die-hard X1/9 fan myself, I'm biased but clearly there's something pretty special about this one and of course it's driver and the team as well.
Some people might remember, FIAT won the WRC once, in the early seventies with the 131 Abarth Rallye, then bought out Lancia and won with the Stratos, Beta 037, and Delta Integrale, then bought out Alfa Romeo and were successful in touring cars with the 155 D2 and then in DTM with the V6 SuperTurismo.
The D2 engines from the 155 are incredibly rare and expensive, not to mention the Hewland or X-Trac sequential gearboxes they were used with.
The Honda K20/K24 engine + Quaife transmission is the polar opposite of the D2 and is the most popular engine swap into an X1/9.
Stance Works recently covered a time-attack build based on a Honda NSX with a heavily turbocharged K20 + SADEV transmission.
As far as I know, nobody has put this combination into an X1/9 (yet) but the potential is undeniable.
Anyway, going back to my original point... it may well be unbeatable but I guess we will never know!
But I imagine it would be beaten on this particular stage, uphill on twisty tarmac... by that insane, little, blue wedge.
