I have been in the wrapping business since 2005, under extreme weather conditions, 3m last about 12 months, chinese vinyl last about 10 months. 3m costs $40 to $60 per meter, chinese vinyl cost $70 to $90 per 25 meters roll. put labour aside, will cost around $1000 for a full wrap in 3m, where the chinese vinyl will cost $50 for a full wrap. Similar life. After 12 months in hot climate, 3m glue residue is just as bad as any other brand, 3m will start to crack within 2 years on the roof and bonnet. If you have a white car, 3m glue residue will turn the paint yellow, can not be cleaned, you have to repaint your car. Chinese vinyl is thicker, very hard to remove but will not damage paint. FYI, just like iphone, 3m vinyl is made in china. Oracle is made in Germany. Out of 3m, avery, hexis, oracle, Hexis has the best value/quality ratio. You can change wrap every 6 months for 10 years, still cheaper than one single 3m wrap. Vinyl not recommanded to keep for more than 2 years, all of them are a B***h to remove when they are older than 1 year. Also air release is not really relevant, because all brands are now offering application liquid or gel, that will make any vinyl temporary none sticky, you can wrap faster than dry applying air release vinyl. 3m last about 6 months in Australia and offers no warranty in Queensland region.

Good video. I ordered Chinese wrap for a small project thinking "wow it looks easy on TH-cam". I nearly lost my mind after several attempts. Couldn't get it to work at all. I basically put my project aside thinking wrapping is only reserved only for pros. Some time had passed and I felt brave again and ordered some Vvivid wrap off Amazon. I CAN'T PUT INTO WORDS WHAT A DIFFERENCE THE VVIVID WAS!! The air release actually worked and with a little heat applied for tough corners, it molded flawlessly and I felt like a pro. I'm yet to try 3m stuff, but only amazing things to say about Vvivid wrap at this point.

    Hi Christian,
Here I go with technical jargon. Adhesive is originally applied to the back at the adhesive coater. What helps to smooth out the adhesive as it's being applied to the back in called a doctor, usually made out of pure brass. What has been learned to make vinyl have air release, is buy getting a doctor bar that has a pattern cut into, usually by high tech lathes. If you can get a slight patter into the adhesive once the backing is laminated to the vinyl, the adhesive transfers to the vinyl, and the pattern in the adhesive transfers to the vinyl. Once that's done, and you have a slight pattern in the adhesive, that pattern will create air release. This is why you're working with a certain type of vinyl, and you comment that it has great air release, that's how the air release was created. Man, do I wish someone would let you into the manufacturing coating site to let you see the whole process as it's done. Of all the people I know, you would appreciate the process so much, and you wouldn't believe it. Vivid, or 3M ? If you're watching, please show Christian the coating process. He's be dazzled....er, He'd bedazzled ? Aw, to hell with it ! He'd be impressed ! LOL
    My very best,
    Scott

I wrapped my brother in laws Camaro roof with eBay color shift wrap and it did just like those and kept bubbling up randomly. After it was finished it didn’t look half bad being the first thing I’d ever wrapped. He left it on for about a month then decided to remove it and it left all the adhesive behind and it had sat outside in the Texas sun all day.

I bought some random brand, 'DIYAH' Carbon Fiber, the application SUCKS, it's so hard to do, BUT it does look good and lasts really well through weather and sun, doesn't take off paint or whatever. It's just the application that's hard, it had air release and all that and it worked super well; but horribly sticky. I mean, I've had 3 people ask me if I got the hood wrapped or if it's real carbon fiber. I wrapped my dads Land Cruiser with Vvivid matte black, and oh man was it SO much easier to apply. So basically, if you have no clue what you're doing, get the expensive stuff. The Chinese stuff is hard to put on.

If I screwed it up, it didn't cost a lot BUT I look forward to working with better wrap because now I know what the bottom is like. I really enjoyed your whole video all the way up to the heat-gun test , everything before that was college level and you was the professor & then the heat gun test was kindergarten level !! You had absolutely no guideline for the time after heating to the force/ rip test you should have reheated each one before applying force to them & to get it completely consistent with the amount of force you should have put one end in a vice clamp or vice grip and then put a little hole on one of the corners or the other side of the material and put either a ratchet strap hook in it and then just ratcheted it and that limits you know the amount of power pressure that gets put on it it'll be even on everyone I mean we know you're trying to use the same Force but that's not really regulated no matter how much you try because with stuff that thin 5 seconds with after using heat gun is everything and you went two to three minutes on the from the first to the last so there's absolutely no heat so the reaction would have been so much more different from the all the way to the 3M the one you did last so can we please get an update on that do each one hitting the same amount of heat for the same time & from the same distance please!! And I promise you I'm really not bashing you I just would really like to see all the underdog/n none you know Fanboy or number one brand get every equal opportunity a chance to shine because that's what it's all about you know especially if it holds up or it's better than the 3M wrap thank you & I'm truly really looking forward to seeing this part redone I really appreciate it because I am about to wrap for 2014 titanium turbo ford fusion and a 1996 Ford Thunderbird LX V8 4.6L supercharged so I'm really you know in the market looking for a cheap but reliable decent quality wrap so I'm not breaking the bank on two vehicles

I was very excited about the VIvid vinyl when it first came out, and I have wrapped several dragsters with their material. I wrapped a car in the liquid metal green and it turned black where the sun hit it the most in a matter of months, and the edges pulled back a half an inch from where it was trimmed. I cant get it off the car to save my life. The adhesive wont let go, and the material separated into layers leaving the metallic dust and glue. If anyone has any suggestions on how to get this off without setting it on fire, please let me know....

@@dr.graves5541 Sad that all this wrong information is being put out to so many people. Vivvid is absolute trash and wont last a year on a car before it fades, not to mention shrinkage on EVERYTHING.
I had the same issue where the vinyl was tearing into layers and little pieces. I ended up taking the wheel to the whole car. Probably spent more time removing then wrapping. Best part is the wrap was on for maybe 8 months before it faded and physically started cracking in random spots. Done many removals and never had such a hard time. Luckily it was on my personal vehicle and not a customer car.

Yeah I made the mistake of buying the Chinese carbon wrap, and went to cold stretch it over my roof and the film tore just as easily as the Chinese film tore A half moon out of itself. I was pissed but I only paid $25 for a 5'x6' roll. For dad joke of the day it was 'tearable' (terrible) film. I just purchased some VVIVID with air release carbon vinyl, so hopefully it goes on better

The area is pretty flat and will be an easy install but as you know vinyl doesn’t like sticking to the PE. I heard about the 3M vinyl primer 94, they say it will help the vinyl stick to the boat. My question is if I put a coat of the primer on the boat will the vinyl stick instantly when it touches it or will I be able to reposition the vinyl it if needed?

I work in a wrapshop in Thailand atm. i'm danish but, we use china wrap sometimes when the customer is being cheap. Basically if you are working with a very thick film you can apply some baby shampoo with a soft sponge on the main area, but not the corners, it allows for the air to move more fluently, and avoid air bubbles.
Also the chinese film in the video, i'm pretty sure it's not made for wrapping entire vehicles, we were talking about it in the shop the other day when we were looking at the sample book, they do make one with a coating on top of the diamonds so it doesn't break.
