    You did very well, I am a retired ASE Master Mechanic and have done this before.
    It does work better if you introduce a tiny stream, the water soaks into the carbon and boils, so it strips the carbon off instantly.
    This is not something to do unless your experienced, as it can damage the motor. However, it is better than using chemicals since the catalytic converters and sensors will not be damaged or fouled by the material used, water will be the best choice for me for this reason. Had you introduced the water in a tiny stream it would have worked even better.
    Good job you showed it will work, but I already knew that.

      Steam doesn't help, it must enter the chamber as a liquid, and turn to steam after soaking into the carbon. this is what makes it work.

      Cold water, and just enough to wet the carbon is best.
      It has to get under the carbon and turn to steam to work.
      I use a squirt bottle from a chemistry lab. A little goes a long way.

      Hey, if you don't understand physics, just admit it.
      It takes allot of energy to change liquid into vapor. And yes it does work as I described.

Indeed, nice job! But I think that is must be done several times to get the pistons perfectly clean. Thanks for sharing!

    When i ran a hydrogen booster on my 94 dodge 3.3l It started off at 18MPG. 3 months of runing i was at 27MPG city 33 highway. I removed the system for safety reasons I went down to 24-25 city and 28-29 highway. So i removed the spark plugs and valve cover it steamed cleaned the engine it looked brand new. So the point is water does work well.

    Check the location where the EGR valve dumps back into the intake manifold. I bet that the crankcase gases enter the intake manifold closest to cylinder 4. A lot of the carbon is from recirculated crankcase vapor.
    Your petrol, in the UK, is much cleaner than the gas in the US; unless we make an effort to buy a top tier high octane gasoline. We use more than 17 different types of gasoline in different areas across the US because of local air pollution problems.

    it does work, im using a small spray bottle with a cup of water inside it and spray it to throttle valve with 5 sec interval every 3-4 sprays. also, my hand holding on the throttle cable rev it to 2k rpm to clear its throat every time i spray (im using carburated engine, Nissan Patrol Y60 SWB TB42)
    the effect is pretty much better than before but not significant, the engine idle feels lil bit smoother and my engine was doing run-on before, but after the water decarb method no run-on happened ever since. oh, and no smoke or carbon chunks on the back of the exhaust
    make sure the engine is on its operating temprature and only use a mist of water to avoid hydrolock

    yes good video as always, I asked for you to do this to compare it to the seafoam product, and you have proved that this has better results, I did this with an old banger we had in the garage, it did make a slight difference, but then I did a different approach, we had some bottles of redex in the garage, so I took the plugs out of the vehicle, poured 250ml of redex in each cylinder, left it soak for most of day, replaced all plugs later in the day started car and let it run at 200rpm till it stopped pushing out the smoke and it was clear, then I did the water test, man a huge difference in before and after, the redex softened the carbon and the water removed it, very very happy with results.

    • @Taff-Uk
      @Taff-Uk 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      sorry it was run at 2000rpm not 200, my bad

    • @DENicholsAutoBravado
      @DENicholsAutoBravado 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      A soak with a good cleaner, then do the decarbonization. Smart. I hadn't thought of that. Did you change the oil after that? With just water alone my oil had to be changed a 1000 miles early and I think your redex would over night do some slipping past the rings and mess up the oil's viscosity.

    • @Taff-Uk
      @Taff-Uk 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      DE Nichols I didn't let it sit in the bores over night it was in there for about 4 hours, but we run the vehicle for a day or two then we did a full service on it, as it was due for a service anyway, and after looking at this you tube video I tried the redex with the water trick, if you think it smokes after the water or seafoam trick wait till you try the redex one, boy it smokes, but like I said it made hell of a difference.

      Baldmechanic I failed to mention that prior to my experience cylinder 1 was 5-7 C degrees hotter than the other cylinders. Immediately, they were all the same. Wish I had a compression test to show higher compression.
      Took a drive, and the engine was SO even! It was incredible! When I got back I retested in case the water had just child the hotter cylinder. Totally even!

    • @DENicholsAutoBravado
      @DENicholsAutoBravado 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It got me curious and I checked compression a couple weeks later. Cylinders 1-4 as follows: 178, 170, 160, 150 psi. Cylinder 4 started at 190...as I had done it first at 190, I believe they are actually quite even. The real problem in fluctuation I believe is that the engine was cooling off.
      In order tested, the PSI, kept being lower. .. either that or the PSI change was as I was running the battery down. The engine was audibly slower each time.
      I wish engines reported to the PCM RPM without being started. That could have even been clearer.
      Since compression was where it was supposed to be, I didn't bother with a wet test. I didn't feel the need to lower my battery charge further.
      I wrote an article if you want to know what else happened carmilespergallon.blogspot.com/2014/10/decarbonziing-your-engine-with-water.html?m=1

    They actually make water injection kits. One for racing applications to give better fuel economy and two to lower engine temps. It also takes more then just one pint for the purpose you're using it for.
    The kits are cheap and also have the required spray pattern mist nozzles. There basically windshield washer kits with a switch. They plug right into the air filter box.

    • @consaka1
      @consaka1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Claude Rains Only the junk ones will be considered windshield washer kits. A real one will operate at 200+psi. Such as the "Devils Own" kits. Now those nozzles put out a real mist.

    • @WizzRacing
      @WizzRacing 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      For the purpose they are using it for. You don't need to buy a $250.00 racing kit. As most will just use it once. Then remove it.
      But yes they make some very expensive ones. As they use methanol and water mix. With very specific atomizer nozzles.

    Nice liked the cam approach to show the before vs after. Did it several times along the years in many cars. Never add an issue and engines always got cleaner in the end. Either gas or diesel. For the hydrolock fearing team be aware the only big no no is simply to not dump a gallon of water straight into the guts of the engine. Spray it slowly and steadly with warmed up engine and warm water. Want even more? Spray some oven cleaner foam, let it seat for 5/10 minutes. Then rev the engine by hand a couple of times, put spark plugs back and continue as described. That will be really clean, but be aware oven cleaner foam will also remove any trace of lubricant. So first revs will be "dry". :-)

  • @ThermoNuclearLlama
    @ThermoNuclearLlama 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    All the people saying about hydrolocking --- yes that would happen if you dumped an entire cup into the engine. But you're only spraying water into it. You still have about 1 inch at TDC to the top of the valves for clearance so in theory you could have it filling that but then you run the risk of damaging valves etc.
    But hell, if you don't agree with it, don't do it! Jesus!

    • @dopiaza2006

    • @xorbe2
      @xorbe2 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah it's WAY less than 1 inch. Did you notice piston tops have cut-outs for valves, it runs very close. 60mm stroke 12:1 compression, 5 mm average clearance at TDC by the math if the valve shut perfectly at the end of intake. Probably more like 4 mm effective.

    I've been using Redex for years. You can put it in the tank and it will help clean the fuel lines and carbs or fuel injectors and the chambers. You can also take out the spark plugs and pour some straight into the chambers. Give it 10 or 15 mins to loosen up all the carbon. Then AND THIS IS IMPORTANT, get a few rags or kitchen roll and before you put the plugs back, turn the engine over a few times to expel any excess. Clean out all the crud that's going to be thrown out the empty spark plug holes, and pay special attention to the spark plug threads. There's no point taking them out and doing the job only to find they won't seat properly because you left a bit of carbon on the thread. Then replace the plugs and start it up. This will cause a great deal of smoke as it burns off,(if it doesn't then you didn't use enough or let it sit long enough) so don't do it at the roadside as you might cause an accident, it really will make so much smoke you won't be able to see across the road. Use somewhere well away from traffic and let it run a while giving it a good revving every so often. When it's finished smoking, take the car for a good run. Letting it warm up completely and give it a good thrash (sensibly of course) to make sure everything is burned off cleanly. It will clean the piston crowns (and rings if you have let it seep down the sides for long enough) and the valves and cylinder head. It will clean up the plugs too, but you should have done that yourself while you had them out. You should have checked the plug gaps with a feeler gauge too. (you lazy person if you didn't.) Remember, prevention and maintenance is better and cheaper than curing a problem. Especially if you break down and need towing somewhere to fix it. I should start my own channel. HMM I'll have to think about that. Time for a cuppa I reckon. Tara...J

    On the older cars we used to have back in the 80's (I had a 1970 Mercury Cougar with a swapped 390 and a 4 speed) we would pour a little Automatic transmission fluid down the carb, gradually at first, then more and more, basically til it quit at idle, then let it sit overnight, so that carbon would have a chance to soften. (F-Type works best by the way and it's also good in the crank case, about a pint or so, if you have a sticking hydraulic valve lifter.) Next morning, a bit of smoke and almost all the carbon would be gone.

  • @Silverhand290
    @Silverhand290 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Decarbing with water will work. Although you will get better results if you use something to help break down the carbon deposits. You don't just want the piston crowns clean. You want the rings and the valve seats to be really clean. That's where engines tend to lose most of their power.

  • @consaka1

    Excellent video! I'm a little concerned that number 4 cylinder might be getting the majority of the water. That last one was the most typical of the water action on the cylinder. The problem I have with the booster vacuum hose is that it might go in the manifold right in one arm of the manifold or really only allow one cylinder or small number of cylinders to get the water. See if the intake manifold has vacuum ports on each intake runner. Then try it one at a time? They should all look like the last one. perhaps more of a higher pressure mist? Dunno, maybe more water over a bit longer time period as the cleaning doesn't happen instantly. Good job though. love the video of the piston tops.

    • @Alexander_l322
      @Alexander_l322 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well the air going in will evenly distributed between all 4 cylinders so why wouldn’t it be the same for the water?

    • @consaka1
      @consaka1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Alexander_l322 Because for perfect distribution you would have to have the water go in dead center of the intake in as small particles as you can get.
      If you use a vacuum port it will not be dead center but will be off center and favor the cylinders drawing air from that side.

Excessive Carbon build up causes over heating especially "pinging" i think the term is.when you switch off your engine the carbon is still read hot and the engine fires over as if it trying to start. Carbon build up causes malfunctioning egr valves as well as clogged oxgen sensors and catalytic converters....great video....i think if you add some detergent to the water it actually is more effective in removing carbon....a few drops or washing powder thoroughly mixed through the water and a very small amount...

    The idea works, but not that quickly.
    If you've ever repaired an engine which has had a head gasket failure where there is a coolant to combustion chamber leak, everything in that one particular cylinder will be spotlessly clean - piston crown, cylinder walls (the top part where the rings don't touch), head and valves.
    Interestingly, the engine I'm referring to was a BMW M10B18, which had 160,000 miles. The honing was still visible and there was no sign of a wear step at the top of the bores. It went on to live many more years!

    Those brown and dark grey areas on pistons or valves surfaces are mainly metal hydroxides mixed with carbon. Those metal ions come from the environment and depends very much on the conditions of the road traveled. Those metal hydroxides cannot be "cleaned" effectively by water vapor nor HHO treatments. It is those curved surface that really matter. But the changes on those curved surfaces cannot be revealed unless we are using high magnification microscope because they are shiny before and after on naked eyes.

    WW2 supercharged fighters had water injection and Dragster have used water injection for years (since 1920's or 30's i think). Normally used with methanol , it acts as a combustion chamber coolant allowing more boost , hence more power (or in the planes case the ability to fly higher). It was tried and banned in Formula 1 racing because the engines were making too much power.
    Nothing new under the sun, eh ?
    What you are doing here is negligible in terms of performance enhancement.
    Interesting video tho' , thanks for posting.

      @yamahabradley 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Well you have some of it right.In the Spitfire the later uprated engines had water/alcohol injection but it was used to save the engine not to necessarily give it more power (which it did by the way). These Merlins had a two stage supercharger as which was also a two speed unit. When all was well the aircraft would climb from low altitude where the air was dense and the engine control unit would detect at what altitude it was flying at and would allow maximum boost using the two stages but with low speed. There was a seal on the throttle in the cockpit in which the pilot was not allowed to go beyond unless he was in mortal danger. If he pushed the throttle through this it would set the blower to High speed which would overboost the engine in the thick air. The water injection would then kick in to cool the incoming airstream so the engine would not go into detonation. This water would only last for about 9 minutes or so then the pilot would have to throttle back to low blower speed or be at a high altitude where the engine would not be overboosted because the air was thinner there. The only use for the alcohol was to keep the water from freezing while cruising along at high altitudes where it could be -30 below.

      Were the F-1 cars injecting a methanol/water blend, or just water? Those engines are doted on, so I can't see water injection as a carbon remover being the focus there. My compression, cold, in my '95 Civic LX is like-new in a couple of the cylinders, but there's some substantial carbon build-up again more than a year after a Berryman's Total Fuel System Treatment application. One of the cylinders was steam-cleaned to perfection after my head gasket failure a couple of years ago, but that's a bad way to go about this. ; ] I;m certain that 'steam cleaning' the combustion chambers works due to the effects of the head gasket rupture. I'm just looking for more input on the water-only process.

      Jamie Kulyk It depends on the type of fire, for example you should NEVER use water on a chip pan fire (google it). The water creates spontaneous combustion, I am guessing it has something to do with the H2O molecular reaction. Fire needs oxygen more than anything to react. The difference in oxygen level is the difference from an explosion to a light simmer. If its an electrical fire they use some sort of foaming agent. It really depends what fire you are talking about

    I have a Question. What is the Fuels Octane that the car Runs? Is there Ethanol in it?
    I have found that Running Mobil Gas does the Trick. They put Fuel additives in it. Sub Brands and Citgo doesn't. Plus Shell with their Nitro additive seems to get worse Gas Mileage. I drive 500-1000 miles a week. Noticing the differences became a Hobby.

      BMAC VAGS why do you consider higher octane better? Where I liver I have the choice of 87 89 93.. I got with 87 due to my truck and car not being a hot rod. To my knowledge the difference is detonation factors as 87 fires easier and 93 takes more compression.

    • @BMACVAGS
      @BMACVAGS  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      My understanding is the higher octane fuel burns cleaner, so you get less residue and better performance from your car.

    • @stevesikora8940
      @stevesikora8940 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Higher octane fuel burns slower. ( Faster burning low octane fuels create detonation more readily as well as less complete combustion.) With the slower burn rate, combustion is more complete. Incomplete combustion is what leaves carbon residue in the cylinder.

    Piston #3 is much cleaner probably because the intake runner is sending a little more of the water to cyl 3 than the others. I would do the treatment a few more times, then every few months to keep the engine clean. I found this out yesterday that Berryman has a combustion chamber cleaner product that uses a combination of solvents and WATER to remove carbon. Perhaps a look at the MSDS for it will lead us to an inexpensive lethal punch for carbon! Keep up the good work my friend.

      In my opinion, if you're going to do this, you might as well do it until the combustion chamber is sparkling and do it long enough to keep it all in suspension so that it passes through the CatConv and so that the O2 sensors don't end up fouled.

I was told in school that do this would help clean out the o2 sensors if they had a bit of carbon on them, what do you think? I think this is the easiest thing to do along with checking the 02 sensors while the engine is running.

      +Drew Nelson I seem to have more oxygen sensor failures near the use of water decarbonization. I'd look at the live data see what's really going on and if you need a sensor replace it. Wouldn't hurt to do a water decarbonization first. If you already know you need a sensor then you won't have to worry about damaging it.
      I've had an upstream O2 sensor cause false P0420's, it does happen. I've manually cleaned an O2 sensor to have it working perfectly. It failed within 3 days. Yeah, it helped get it going again, but it being clean used the last of what it had left to give. All I did was clean the outside up a bit, the part that goes in the exhaust stream.

    How will this breaking up carbon goin' down the exhaust pipe affect the modern cars fitted with a Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) coz if you have a lot of loose carbon deposits goin' righ into DPF you could risk cloggin' it wouldn't you?
    Another thing is how does the water affect the bore in the cylinder, water in the cylinder could cause more friction so I'd be worried that it could potentially cause premature wear in the cylinder.

  • @xmykingx9846

    I'm a mechanic I would not recommend this. Reason why its because it will pick up all the carbon and clean the cylinder but some of it will get crushed by the valve against the seats. This will reduce your compression. And by doing so you will use up more gas in the long run. Worked in a machine shop saw it in cylinders that were burning water bad seal on valves
