Thank you, I agree that teaching your kids to do hard work and knowing how to do things is something that is very important and in short supply right now. Thanks for watching!
I imagine you do not film every project but at least when you make videos like this it gives clients a reference into what it takes to do it right. Hard to argue with video showing the steps and why they are necessary.
Nice job on the tig welding. Gotta love the rosebud for heating up and getting those brackets back into shape. Your shop is perfectly set up I'm a jealous lol.
I totally understand your frustration. Been there before many times making nightmares turn into miracles. Working on any kind of commercial transport vehicle as a welder is always going to be dirty work. No pun intendended. The side walls on any dump box will instantly distort in or out and what keeps it square is the end gate.
Yeah, it can definitely be frustrating. I guess you do the best you can within the customers budget, within reason. And if they don’t want to pay you enough to at least make it a practical fix, then you tell them to find someone else who is willing to do that. It can be tricky finding the balance. I guess it’s part of that learning curve of owning your own business.
When my boss asks how long one of these quick turn around low budget jobs will take... I say; we're panning for gold... It could be today, it could be tomorrow.... It's not a magic show... You sir are a magician.. That cracked gusset was driving me nuts. Glad you decided to fix that too... lol. Cheers
Lol. Sometimes I think the customer thinks I really am a magician. And then I think, I'm just a welder, not a freaking magician! I will everything in my power to fix it right, but sometimes to fix it right, its just going to cost more than the customer wants to pay. That's when it gets a little tricky, and at times, frustrating. I like the gold panning metaphor.
i’ve seen that some agriculture equipment owners in my area sometimes just have a guy weld and repair an implement just to finish the day as a emergency repair and later on in the future do a full inspection and complete that particular repair and others that might appear
That is true. I’m sure that takes place. I guess I would just hope that when the owner finally gets around to getting the equipment fixed right, that they aren’t so stuck on a budget that they skimp on quality. Thanks for watching!
Thanks! I use pearl abrasives, and love them. The flap disc I use is a pearl “redline”. They’re really thick, and I get good life out of them. Thanks for watching!
When it comes to aluminum and things like dump truck beds, I have always used either 4043 or if I’m feeling really frisky, 6061. If you stick to the more common grades of aluminum, they typically mix quite well. If it was the space shuttle, you might wanna confirm what grade the material is, but for 99% of aluminum projects they typically live in harmony. That is just how I have always done it. Thanks for watching!
Hi thanks for video, why didn't you put in a cross member/brace. That would stiffen the bin and sort out the bending issue. My tipper has massive angle iron across the bin.
Well, that goes back to the customer having to spend more money. He wanted me to try to stay within a tight budget. I tried to stay within that budget as close as possible and still do a good job. Those are the jobs that are sometimes the most frustrating/tricky.
You need to get a spool gun for aluminum. I was surprised you didn't chemically clean and preheat the aluminum before welding it. It turned out good, but it was a lot of work. When they bang the tailgate to get the stuck dirt out of the bed, that will test on your welds. From what I see in your videos, you're using 50 amp outlets for your welding machines The electrical inspectors in my area will not allow a 50 amp outlet to be protected by breakers or disconnect larger than what the outlet is rated for. You can check the National Electrical Codes online.
I’m actually planning on getting a push pull gun for aluminum , I prefer them over spool guns, but they’re between $2500-$3500. I’m not sure where you saw 50 amp welding outlets in my shop, I don’t have any 50 amp circuits in my shop. all of my welding outlets are 100 amp. Everything is up to code. Had to pass an electrical inspection when I built the shop.
Stuart, I saw that receptacle for your welding machine on your Shop tour 2022 and you said you got them from Home Depot. I, too, have a shop with large equipment, and the 100 amp receptacles are about $350 each, and the plug is the same. If you have a line on them, please let me know your source. Our Home Depot doesn't carry them. If I am wrong I apologize. Keep up the videos
Nice job. Dirty aluminum is a night mare. I shur don't miss aluminum, I made moose bumpers for a year with crappy Chinese aluminum, it would always leave porosity pin holes, things that make you go grrrr. 👌
It’s a 40’x 60’x 18’. At the time, the kit was $23,500. That doesn’t include dirt work, or concrete, or insulation, or doors. Price for all of that = about $50,000. I’ve heard the price of everything is about double now. You can get more details by watching my shop tour video. Thanks for watching!
I just happen to be doing a aluminum dump truck box, a new liner for the floor, partial sides on the back half, also have to fix all the cracks that I can find, on this dump box. The hinge caps are 1/2 fyi , i’ve done countless aluminum horse trailers. They are the worst for contamination.oh every company that has an aluminum dump box that is breaking seems to tell us repair guys that they are going to replace it but you’ll notice that they never do, I have two aluminum dump boxes that I do repairs on for two different companies and I’ve heard that I’m going to replace that story from both of them multiple times, I’m not sure why they tell me that .
Thanks for the info. I knew 3/16” was way too thin. 5/16” should be a considerable upgrade for him. I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one that deals with the “fun” jobs/customers. Talked to the customer this morning and he informed me that he doesn’t get payed till Friday, so I guess I get to park it at my house for a week until he gets paid. I can’t help but think “why the hell are you having me fix it if you don’t have the money?” But that’s just me.
@@Freedomfabrication777 yes, I absolutely agree, I have customers I trust to pay their bill and then there is my company policy, nothing leaves, unless it’s paid for, I hate that we have to be this way, but it’s business. I bet I see a spool gun in a future freedom, fabrication purchase.
Nice fix. That had to suck without having something to rest the torch hand on. I've never used one, but would a spool gun be usable on a job like this?
Yes, that’s definitely an option. My plan is to get a push pull gun for the millermatic 255. Same principle as a spool gun, gives you the ability to run mig aluminum. Downside is they are $2500-$3500. They do make it nice though for jobs like this one.
@@MyLilMule Yeah. I would say that’s one of the down sides of starting a fabrication business. It’s expensive. You know how that is. Machining equipment is the same.
@@Freedomfabrication777 I have the luxury of not using my machines to make money, so I can buy an older machine or one that just needs some attention and repairs, fix it up, and put it to use. Still working full time. I don’t think I’ll consider going full time until- 1. I’m losing money going to my full time job. 2. I’m making more with my business than I make now at my full time job. Not quite to that point yet.
Nice repair! You did all that you could with the time/money restrictions. Repair work is hardly ever straightforward, especially on aluminum. I’ve been eyeing up an HTP machine lately for the aluminum options that they have.
Thanks, sometimes the customer makes it stressful due to budget restrictions, so you just do the best you can with what you have to work with. Thanks again for watching!

Amazing work as always given that dirty material. The real question is who makes an aluminum dump truck bed?
That is a fantastic question, and an even better question is who the heck would want one on a dump truck?
For sure!
