    Fun fact: Mario's model in the DS version has a lower poly count than the original model. They just got better at modelling, like a whole lot 😅

    • @fisherdotogg
      @fisherdotogg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +350

      It's good that they did, because they had to for this game anyway. The DS has a lower polygon cap than the N64, and is sorta...loosely equivalent to it in overall power. More cart storage, faster RAM, worse CPU, no GPU (CPU had to raster in software), but it has the GBA CPU as a coprocessor to handle input and audio (it was there for backwards compat).

    Weirdly enough, my most fond memories from Super Mario 64 DS was the multiplayer. Despite being repetitive, me and my siblings would play that for hours. I clearly remember always beelining to the Wario hat and attempting to throw my siblings off cliffs.

      The N64 was actually quite powerful for the time, the limitation was the cartridge size and slow RAM.
      Since RAM was so slow, devs would often put uncompressed assets on the cart instead since it took too long to load them into memory for the CPU to decompress. But then you remember the tiny cart size.
      1996 to 2004 was home to some of the biggest performance progressions over time. It was common for a PC you built/bought in 1998 to chug running games launched in 2001 and be unusable, even on sites, by 2003

    12:02 the movement in 3D World is actually restricted to 8 directions regardless of whether you use a D-Pad or not, so an analog stick causing you to sway at that part is very weird

    • @legoboy7107
      @legoboy7107 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      From my brief testing with 3d world's controls, at least on the Switch version, your movement defaults to 8 directions but isn't restricted to that necessarily. I think how it worked was if you were already holding a direction with a joystick and Mario was moving in one of the 8 directions, you could make a minor adjustment with the stick and cause Mario's course to change to a direction that's not one of the 8, rather than him just always locking to only the 8.

    • @CaptMono
      @CaptMono 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      This is actually because Luigi's movement is "looser" in the sense that he's less restricted to the 8 directions a Directional Pad can input. It's a very subtle change Nintendo made to make him feel more slippery that not a lot of people know about. The above reply still applies, however.

    • @silokhawk
      @silokhawk  2 ปีที่แล้ว +60

      That isn't fully true.
      In the Wii U version, movements only have a maximum of 8 directions despite the controller being used.
      However on Switch, they unlocked movements letting you move in more than 8 directions (which is what you're seeing in the video)

    The DS (at least the original model) explicitly had a sort of “thumb stylus” on the end of the hand strap. You could tighten the end of the strap onto your thumb, which positioned a hard nubbin of plastic onto your thumb tip. It worked quite well on the left thumb for the touch-screen analog control scheme, and also allowed easy access to the camera controls.

    A couple nuggets about SM64DS:
    Wario's boss fight actually has special dialog if fought with Yoshi, which is possible by using a glitched spot on the mirror that seems like it was intentionally left broken even though they fixed other issues like JRB's Boat being a slope when it swayed
    The dialog is as follows:
    (Intro/before the fight starts)
    "Hmm? I see you have no mustache. Poor, bald, little creature.
    It's not a fair fight for you, but luckily, I'm not a fair fighter. Let's go!"
    (After the fight/Defeated)
    "I simply cannot believe that I lost to a hairless pip-squeak like you!
    My mustache was my only joy. Now what am I going to do?"
    This is possible on launch copies (The copies that start with "©2004 Nintendo")
    I'm not sure about later copies that start with "©2004-2005 Nintendo"
    You can duplicate caps on Snowman's Land by letting the Snowman blow you away then recovering them over and over again. it'll eventually duplicate too many for the engine to handle and it'll crash, showing a crash error screen.
    We didn't knew what the hole in the wall on the castle exterior was for (on the file select screen). I don't know if we ever got an answer for that.
    Super Mario Slot is just an easier version of Mario Slot.
    It's random whether you can see through the card on Psyche Out!
    You can complete the game with only one key very easily due to a bug that lets you walk underwater on the moat
    Unlike it's Original Counterpart, there's a lot of places where you can upwarp very easily, one of them is on the TTC/RR room.
    There's leftover stuff from the multiplayer for story mode.

    About the touch controls, when discussing them people always seem to forget about the lace that came bundled with the first Nintendo DS. That thing had a small disk of plastic and the idea was that you'd tie it to your thumb so that you could use it to guide the characters without using a stylus. That control scheme was not intended to be used with the stylus, they knew that it would not work. That lace was probably included specifically for this one game. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't great, but I remember it being better than the dpad. It was basically like having a free form analog stick. The problem mainly being that it was centered, instead of being on the side. Which is appropriate for a remake of a N64 game, I guess.

    I’m right handed, and when this game launched, I 100% it using the wriststrap thumbpad w/ the touchscreen to control movement. It was awkward at first, but much better than the stylus and provided more control than the d-pad.

    That’s so weird. When I was like 4-5, me and my family went on a camping trip, and some kid that I met on the camping grounds had a DS, and it was the first time I had ever seen one. According to my mom, I never did anything related to camping after meeting this kid, I was just watching him play his game the whole time.

      I mean it technically does, they just dont use it for some reason.
      Same goes for download play, that would be possible but no games do it nowadays. Though I also understand that because file sizes keep getting bigger for games.

    Can I just say that I really prefer this version? I get the criticism about the controls, but I don't hate them. No, they aren't perfect. But they work. The incremental turning does really well in masking the limiting d-pad. I will agree, it's pretty bad for narrow levels, but as someone who mainly plays Mario 64 for the sandbox levels, I didn't find myself facing that issue often. Playing on the 3DS doesn't fix the issue, but it does make it more comfortable for my hands. Being able to just pull my 3DS out of my pocket and knock out a Star on Cool Cool Mountain is main selling point for me. Overall this was a great review and I really appreciate SilokHawk taking into account it's time of release and being as objective as possible.

      Yes and no, the game will still make you move in 8 directions and hold a run button to run, but a circle pad does feel much better for 3D games than a D-pad.

      I would recommend buying an original ds wriststrap because that makes the touch controls more stick like, but those are pretty niche to come by to be honest.

    Goomboss isn't "new" to SM64DS. He debuted in Paper Mario 64, although he was simply called "the Goomba King" there. In fact, Goomboss bears the distinction of being one of the only Mario characters to ever be introduced in the RPG series and then cross over to the mainline platform series.
    King Boo also appeared in Luigi's Mansion and Super Mario Sunshine before his fight here, although his design was drastically different in both games.

    One thing to note about the controls is that the touch controls were not meant to be used with the stylus, but rather a weird little rubber... Thing attached to the original ds' wriststrap.
    I played it that way back then and playing this way feels wayyyy more organic than using a stylus or the dpad.
    The only issue is that ONLY the original ds had this wriststrap thing with the rubber part on it, which honestly imo is part of the reason nobody knows about it.
    It sucks because I genuinely think this is the best way to play the ds version [besides mods] and everyone online either doesnt know about it existing OR mentions it and then shits on it because they havent tried it or gotten used to it and then say "but its not a stick"

    It was intended for you to use the lanyard for the DS and its tiny thumbpad as a "virtual analog stick" and...once you get used to it, it actually worked alright, but yea, i found myself consistently switching between that and the d-pad to get through this game.
    Also, i've gotta say that shell sliding mini game was like actual crack.

    I will say that I love the new content they added in the DS version like the mini games, new levels, 30 new stars, and the new playable, but I do agree that the controls aren’t as good as the original. Like, controlling a 3D Mario game with a D-pad isn’t really ideal. I prefer playing this game on the 3DS or Wii U VC because you actually have an analog stick and I actually think it does improve the controls, but I still prefer the controls of the original. Also, I wish the DS version didn’t have a run button since the original didn’t have one. So, I love the remake and I would still recommend playing it, but I do prefer the original version because of the better controls and also because it’s just more fun to just move around.

    one thing you can do if d-pad controls get you down is to try playing this game on a 3ds. The fact that they added that d-pad smoothing to the game for a d-pad, actually makes the 3ds circle pad feel more natural than you would expect. that's how I managed to complete the game and I must say, while it doesn't fix EVERY problem with control in this version, it makes it SIGNIFICANTLY better, just due to the fact that the circle pad will alternate d-pad imputes frequently enough to feel natural.
    if you haven't tried this game due to the ds, give it a try on the 3ds. its a much better experience.

    If you eat an enemy that gives 3 coins, egg it, and then fire it at other enemies, every enemy will give 3 coins. Same thing with blue coins. Eat a Koopa, egg it, Shoot at a bunch of enemies, each one gives a blue coin. Yoshi is way more broken than anybody thought, and nobody ever seems to know about this trick for easy 100 coins stars.

I remember I always wanted to be able to play as Luigi in SM64 and when I heard about SM64DS it was quite literally a dream-come-true, plus being able to play as Yoshi & Wario was an added bonus.
