    I have had my camera for some time now and I'm just now trying to learn more about the kit lens and photography in general. This is the first photography video that I stumbled upon that was calming and effective. It did not make me feel dumb or give me anxiety. It made me feel like I can learn and excel. Thank you, Christian!!

    For 3 years ago I bought my Canon m6 mkii with the 15-45 kit lens, but soon bought this 18-55 and has used it since then and I’m super happy about It. I also have the 32 mm and that one is a super lens for the m6 camera. In total I have 6 of the EF-M lenses from Canon. And now when Canon discontinued the m6 I can’t see the successor in that small size of street camera.

    Cheap hack for a loose 18-55 focus ring. I've got a canon 18-55 kit lens where the manual focus ring is very loose. Because it is a kit lens the ring itself is corrugated plastic (no rubber grip}, and no obvious tightening screws. For this particular lens geometry i have found this hack, where I can use a strip of velcro type gardening cane tie, which has the hooks on one side and the soft furry side on the other. If you cut a length greater than the circumference of the lens barrel and rap it furry side against the barrel around and secure with the overlap, you can position the strip half on the focus ring and half on the stationary part of the barrel where the Canon name. is. The furry contact grips the corrugated ring, but slides smoothly over the barrel and provides enough friction not to move once focused.

    Im Verry happy with the kit lens i bought it with my canon eos 850d. For me as a beginner i can already shoot some pretty cool stuf like Cars even in a dark parking garage, stars and landscapes. I guess for a beginner that just starts with the hobby it is verry good.

    I do a lot of weddings and have this lens on my 3rd camera (the back up to the back up) and I don't know how many times I have reached for and used this lens on a shoot. I have happy customers and that is really goal, do I want to enlarge these photos to poster size No but for standard 16x20's - 11x14's and 8x10's this lens does a great job.

    The Original 18-55 STM F3.5-5.6 was good, but the newer F4-5.6 STM is really being better. Not only 20% being smaller, lighter - it ends the horror, the Lens is extending at both (!) ends of the focal range, hence 18mm and 55mm hereby. The newer STM works as it should, 18mm its small, and extending to 55mm, like a ordinary zoom lens. Futhermore, it's being a tad sharper, and it does feature a thin class plate before the lens mount, means it being air-sealed, and not pumping dust onto the camera sensor like the older versions. This is important for EOS 20D, 30D Users. On the 10D, it won't fit, because that very old 10D can't use EF-S Mount Lenses, but you can use of course for reference the Tamron 17-50/2.8, Sigma APS-C Lenses, etc.
    FYI, here's the Christopher Frost comparsion: th-cam.com/video/_x0gtlp3Cys/w-d-xo.html
    I'm using this Lens, also the 10-18 STM, and 55-250 STM on my trusty, but old EOS 40D.

    I usually shot with my 50mm as my staple but recently got a request for just a couple group photos of a bridal party that is 8 each side plus b&g. So 18 people. Could I switch to my kit for this, and possibly be around 5.6, 400 iso, 250 shutter. I’m not worried about the bokeh, just sharpness of the group!

    For people that want to use such a lens for photogrammetry, chromatic aberration matters a lot. If you just want to take normal photos, go for it, but if you want some algorithm to do something with that picture, you should definitely care about these stuff.

    • @elwirastadnik
      @elwirastadnik 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is a bit misleading comment as for photogrammetry the lenses one should use are the prime ones. With a zoom lens (whichever) the results in photogrammetry will always be less reliable.

    What lens would you recommend for the Canon Rebel t7? For better picture and video quality?

    • @christianskyes
      @christianskyes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on what you want to shoot. Also, I have different recommendations for video and photos.
      For video, the kit lens actually works quite well. The most important thing I'd say, if you're going to shoot handheld, is to have Image Stabilisation (IS) in the lens, and the kit lens does have that (as long as it has IS in the name).
      For photos, a good start is the 50mm f/1.4 or f/1.8. I have a video on the channel on the f/1.4
      I hope this helps :)

    First off thanks for this great video. You are a great narrator and I enjoyed every second of listening to your voice. I also love cats. ☺️
    I am an amateur photographer and I do timelapses with an old 450d and this lens. During one of the recent shots my tripod got blown over by the wind and the camera landed on the ground lens first.
    I managed to clean the sensor and altogether the dslr seems to be fine. However the lens seems to have suffered lots. I have problems with the zoom function and the focus is not as convincing as it used to be.
    Would you recommend I buy this lens again or would you recommend to switch to a more advanced modell? Also which focal length would you recommend for landscape photography?

    • @AlexandarHullRichter
      @AlexandarHullRichter 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would. I had to replace the original kit lens on my 400D because the aperture actuator stopped working in cold weather, and I got another one of eBay. They're so cheap! If you like this lens, it's definitely not worth looking at spending 4x the price or more for an upgrade lens.
      If you've been looking to upgrade your lens already, that does make it a convenient time to look. Unfortunately, there aren't any other zoom lenses that came even close to being as small and light as this one tho.

      Hi Christian, I'm a amateur photographer. It's more of a hobby, until now. I have to cover a surprise proposal event during the evening hours. I only have a canon 100D with the 18-55 mm lens. Do you suggest getting a better camera, if yes which one? If not, which other lens can I use instead of my kit lens.
      Note: I'm going to rent out the gear.
      Thanks in advance.

    • @christianskyes
      @christianskyes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LSF7 Hi Lucy. I've done one of those in the past. The camera body should be fine, but you might want a lens that can shoot from more of a distance.
      When it comes to surprise proposals, the photographer is usually in the background, pretending to take photos of something else. When the proposal happens, you usually spring in.
      If you don't want to have to sprint, have a look at something like a Canon 55-250mm or even a 75-300mm.
      Practice a bit with it, to get used to it, but that'll allow you to shoot from quite a distance. You can then switch to your regular kit lens to do close-ups and such.
      I hope that helps :)

    I got one with my canon SL3 (250d) it's the non-STM version and I tend to use my 50mm because I feel like the images I get from it are way crispier/sharper compared to what I can shoot with the 18-55mm kit lens but I'm almost curious if it's more due to the lighting and my settings, i've been trying to get more familiar with vs shooting with the auto settings so I'm going to try messing with it more

    • @christianskyes
      @christianskyes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      That can be the case. If it's the 50mm lens, is it the f/1.8mm version, or the f/1.4? Since the aperture will open up wider than on the kit lens, you're allowing in more light, which allows you to use a faster shutter speed, and that 'freezes the image better'.
      A good rule of thumb to get sharp images is to not have a shutter speed setting that is slower than your focal length. For example, if your Canon camera has a cropped sensor, which it does, in order to get the true focal length, you multiply the focal length of the lens by x1.6. So if it's the 50mm, it's 50 * 1.6 = 80mm. As a result, the shutter speed should always be faster than 1/80s. If you go lower, you're far more likely to introduce motion blur.
      If you're on your kit lens, and you're zoomed all the way out, you're at 18mm, so 18 * 1.6 = 29mm. So again, shoot faster than 1/30s. Zoomed all the way in you're at 55mm, so 55 * 1.6 = 88mm, which means you should shoot faster than 1/90s or 1/100s, whichever is closest and above the number.
      I hope this makes sense?

    Is there any way for the lens to mimic photos you could get from a 50mm lens? I really like the bokeh effect from the 50mm lens but I want to get used to the kit lens first!

    • @vmcampos
      @vmcampos ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really. A 50mm is often f/1.8 or f/1.4 or even f/1.2. THAT causes the background blur (bokeh) that we love with a 50mm. The 18-55mm can be set to 50mm focal length, but it can never be set to f/1.8 aperture to get great bokeh. It will be at f/5.6 instead. Hope this helps!

      Especially in the beginng i used the kit lens a lot since i didnt had proper lenses yet in the focal range of the kit lens and only macro prime, telezoom and so. But even as i got a 28-105mm, it totally replaced the 18-55. The much better and silent autofocus, the F3.5-4.5 and pretty much better quality than the 18-55 kit were enough reasonable benefits to totally kick out the 18-55mm EF-S despite having only 28mm at minimum instead of 18mm. (the 28mm were sometimes a problem on APS-C, barely on full frame)

    Well by seeing you removed the 1.4 „nifty fifty“ on the short clip of the 77D i see you are a man of culture.
    I love(d until it broke) the 50mm 1.4, not so the kit lens but i only had the kit lens of the 400D long ago not even IS and very poor IQ/CA
    My personal „Kit lens“ on Full Frame is now a 28-135mm IS USM (traded a 28-105 USM for it), also similar in quality to a regular kit lens on FF i would say. And i really love the zoom of nearly 5x which make it very universal and finally image stabilizer on a regular lens!
    I also dont mind using a 1000$ Mirrorless body with lenses worth each one between 50-250$ 2nd hand, im fine with them the lenses are anyways handpicked for special stuff like macros, mediocre telezooms for wildlife/landscape, fast prime like the RF50mm 1.8 STM now.
    And it was a HUGE difference from a fked up Eos 550D to a RP, old entry level APS C vs new „good“ fullframe. All i hope for are better sooner than later affordable/fair priced RF lenses they are still overpriced heavily

      @christianskyes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I keep forgetting people call it the "nifty fifty" 😂 I've actually yet to try out the 28-135 🤔
      In regards to the RF lenses, I actually own two at the moment, and my God, yeah, they're incredibly expensive. Reviews coming soon though.

    • @harrison00xXx
      @harrison00xXx 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@christianskyes The 28-135 is actually "bad", but at least better than the 18-55 kit lens and especially "needed" since i was upgrading to FF (finally!)
      Why i never liked any EF-S lens.... upgradability
      A friend got longer ago a 10-18 (or 10-22, idk) wide angle, upgraded to a better 18-55 IS and the 55-200mm or so... the el cheapo "holy trinity", but all EF-S so only APS-C lenses. He upgraded some years ago to full frame...guess what, all 3 lenses useless for him. He lost a lot money by getting all 3 lenses new and then reselling it "for cheap" since barely anyone buy those lenses for a higher/"new" price

    Hello Christian,
    Basing on your opinion, should I prefer the 18-55 3,5-5,6 IS STM or the 4-5,6 IS STM?
    I bought an eos 850D with 4-5,6, but they sent me the older 3,5-5,6 so I'm considering the replacement.
    Every suggestion would be super-appreciated. Thank you!

    • @christianskyes
      @christianskyes  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Congratulations on your purchase 👍 I'd keep the Canon 18-55 f/3.5-5.6
      Those lenses are almost identical, but the f/3.5 means that the aperture can open slightly wider, compared to the f/4, which means you can get more light into the camera, thus you can shoot a bit easier in low light conditions.

      @tizianoem 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@christianskyes thank you so much, for you time and for your kindness also. I’ll keep the f3,5 and i’ll try my best to improve my skills. Maybe one day i’ll be able to put my hands on more and better lenses 😁

    I have the III version. Came bundled with my rebel t5 / 1200d when I bought it as my first camera in 2014.
    It, um, sucks now. As far as sharpness is concerned it's actually its strongest point, you're able to get some really good corner sharpness even on wider apertures as well as pretty good contrast, but that's where the praise really ends for me. Having used this lens for so many years, I've struggled with the tiny amount of light it lets in, its severe chromatic aberrations, distortion and vignetting and its painfully slow and loud autofocus motor and manual focus ring. Oh and the autofocus straight up misses like 80% of the time.
    It's not a good option in 2022. I'd pick a prime lens over having to deal with how loud and slow is on top of the aberrations that can show up even in the middle of the image, they're very intrusive.
