  • In this video, I'll be cooking with my grandma! :-). We are making Chinese Lo Mein (mixed stir-fried noodles) with ingredients that we have around the house. Big shoutout to my Grandma "Popo" she has been cooking delicious meals my whole life.
    The recipe below (no measurements):
    Ingredients:
    Napa cabbage
    Green cabbage
    Carrots
    Celery
Chicken thighs cut into strips and marinated in soy sauce, oyster sauce, and corn starch
Lo Mein Noodles or any noodles or pasta
    To taste:
    Soy sauce
    Oyster sauce
    Procedure:
Cut the napa cabbage, green cabbage, carrots, and celery into roughly the same size. Then cut the chicken thighs into strips and marinate them with soy sauce, oyster sauce, and corn starch. Next, we saute the vegetables in a pan with corn oil and added some water to the pan to steam them. Then we cooked the noodles in boiling water for 3min. We removed the noodles and rinsed them under cold water to stop the cooking process. Next in a new pan with some oil, we sauteed the chicken thighs. When they were 80% cooked, we added in the cooked noodles followed by the soy sauce and oyster sauce to taste. To finish it, we added the cooked vegetables into the pan and mixed everything together on medium heat for 1-2min.

Your popo’s English is very good! My popo didn’t speak English at all, but I think she could understand us.
I love that you have taken the time to cook with her. I was not fortunate to do that when my popo was alive.

I used to not value the time with my grandma and my chinese culture now. I'm happy to share it with you and I realize how fortunate I am. Thank you for your support! Wish you and your family the best.

My father was a restaurant cook in Chinatown for decades. He eventually gave it up and worked in a refrigerator assembly plant after being retrained in a government sponsored program. He cited long hours and unpaid holidays as reasons. When we had guests for dinner he and my mother cooked together. Wok hei or the lack if it, was always his main complaint. My mother would mumbled under her breath as she washed up that he made such a mess whenever he helped.

That's very hard life I'm sure. I respect your parents. Wok hei and lack of it that's funny. I get you

Michael, "wok hei" is usually referred to high caliber type of gas burners in restaurants. When it's fired up, it's so powerful and loud, it sounds like a jet engine. You cannot get wok hei, even with home gas burners.
