Forgot to mention this in the video. If you've transferred your account and wish to transfer your animal crossing island over using the transfer tool you need to create a new local user on the old switch and link it to your Nintendo account. This will make that the secondary console and then you can transfer your island over to your new Switch. :)

Don't worry though you can go into the eStore and click on your account and scroll down then you can change it to be your primary system. This won't affect the animal crossing island transfer though :)

Finally upgraded to the OLED, and honestly had a small panic when I saw things would be deleted from my SD card (and my poor ADHD brain didn't register *what* was being deleted). Can't thank you enough for this video and being so thorough - huge relief to see I just need to redownload games! And absolutely never would have known to download the Animal Crossing Island tool!
Thank you- this video was immensely helpful. I just did a Switch transfer but freaked out because all that appeared to transfer was my profile. I'm redownloading Pokemon Scarlet and if my save data is still intact then I know i'm good. It should be, because my violet cartridge worked. I also made sure to store every single pokemon possible in Home first, all 2500 of them (and a good number of prized shinies) so I knew they would be safely kept alive if I had to start a new game.
I assume they're super paranoid about people dumping SD cards and playing the games like ROMs - so they make the game downloads tied to the system with a key. I also couldn't play the games I copied from one SD card to another directly to upgrade my card size. Same system, but it said all the games were corrupted and I had to redownload all of them.

thank you so much, the thing about the micro is exactly what i needed. a lot of other channels go in depth about the transfers, but only games and game data. NO ONE talked about the pictures and screen shots and this is what i was looking for. im not as worried about the games, there are really only 3 that i would cry about loosing data for, but the pictures are from events that are over and not easily replicated. all the other games i have are not as important, or they are indie games i dont mind starting from scratch so ill be able to enjoy everything and not worry.
Finally a clear answer on wether or not screenshots and videos get deleted when transferring an sd card from one switch to another! I've been googling for 10 minutes without success, this video reassured me that I won't lose my screenshots and videos. Thanks! 😊

Massive thank you ❤ for this video. I'm not very tech savvy so this is a god send. 100% you are THE ONLY person who has explained in a simple, detailed, clear way. For anyone wondering about the SD card section, after you click redownload from the eshop, you can go back to your switch home screen and you will see the games/saved data redownloading. I had a lot of Pokémon and mario kart and marvel ultimate alliance 3 so it did take a while to fully download everything I had. Admittedly it's a odd process to delete your SD card but it does all come back through the process in the vid.
I just got a new Splatoon Switch after having my old Switch since launch, I used that thing to death to the point where it lost quite a few external bits and functions! Hey, since you bought the splatoon switch I’m assuming you have 2, were you able to successfully transfer 2’s data to the new oled? I’ve heard reports of the profile transfer not moving splatoon data. I have three X-Ranks and still regularly play 2 and I’m scared of losing all that haha.
@@EminenceAlpaca Oh, it worked for me perfectly fine! Granted I don't play 2 anymore, but I remember checking after transferring and my Angler-Mask Octoling was just chilling in the Square as usual!

Tysm for this tutorial! I was panicking so much since I didn’t want to lose my Splatoon or acnh save data. I followed all the steps in this video and it worked perfectly. To anyone still confused I transferred my profile and user data to new switch first. Splatoon 2 transferred over fine. For acnh I downloaded the island transfer tool on my old switch before transferring user profile. I had 2nd account on my old switch to open the tool.

I have three X-Ranks myself, and still regularly play; so personally I’m afraid to do the transfer to an oled. I have some clarifying questions, if you don’t mind. 1. Did you transfer your profile before setting up the new switch, like GameXplain or did you have it already set up like in this video? 2. Is your copy of Splatoon 2 physical or digital? 3. If physical, did you download the game update before opening the game?
@@EminenceAlpaca hello it’s been a while since I did it but I’m pretty sure I did everything while setting up the new switch. My Splatoon 2 copy is physical and when you try and open the game it should say there is an update available and you download it and all the save data is there

This was the only vid out of many we watched that covered transferring user to a new switch and ACNH island transfer to a new switch on the same vid. We weren’t sure the order to do this in until your vid.
The only thing false about this video is that you can actually get all your games from the sd card you just need a computer. You put the sd card into the computer then "copy" everything off the sd card on to the computer. Then put the sd card into the new switch format it. Put that card back into the computer copy everything back. Dont delete the main folder on the newly formatted card or this will not work. Then back into the new switch and then it should have everything there without having to redownload all the games that were on your sd card

thank you SO MUCH for this :D almost had a panic attack when I plopped my old sd into the OLED and my album was gone, turns out the pics and videos were in system memory on the old one. put the sd card back, transferred them all to the sd card in settings, the put it back in the OLED, everything is right as rain! animal crossing AND pokemon saves!
So I just got my Switch Oled last week and I’m happy you mentioned everything I was worried about. But, my biggest fear is that does anyone know a safe way to transfer Pokémon data? I’ve heard horror stories of people losing their Pokémon data because it doesn’t use the cloud system like Animal Crossing?
Animal crossing doesn't use the cloud system either, providing you've transferred your user account over correctly then your Pokémon data will be transferred too, if it's not there go back to the old switch press the + button when the Pokémon game is selected and transfer saved data :)
This was super helpful! All the info i need in one spot. Just one question though! Will the save data for your games still be there once you redownload (after transferring switches and SD card)? Or does transfering the SD card delete all save data? Like if my Hollow Knight data is saved on the SD card, will i lose my progress once switching my SD card to the new switch?
Save data should automatically save to the system not the SD card but if it has for some reasons then transfer the save data back to the main console and then transfer your user data and it'll transfer with it. Or if you've transferred your user already press the + button on the game on the old switch and select transfer save data. The SD will delete everything other than screenshots I believe.
Ok THANK YOU for talking about the photos/videos and stuff in terms of the microSD card because hat was honestly my biggest worry. My current switch is still fine but later I might get a new one and I really didn't want to lose all those memories. also Thanks for making the microSD stuff more clear, that was also kinda confusing. Yes! It should transfer however if not don't worry! You can manually do it by going to the game tile, press the + button - manage software - transfer your save data. Then follow the on-screen instructions :)

I'm on my old switch now, and I see in the manage software window, that the following games Tetris 99, Smash Bros Ultimate, Super Mario Odyssey, and Pokemon Sword still has their MB of data. How do I get these onto my new OLED? I don't wanna redo all these games from scratch again. That would truly devastating.

Well, after transferring my Pokémon games' save-data, downloading the backup save-data for the rest of my games from the cloud, and reupdating all the software, I'm now right at home on my sweet new Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Edition Switch OLED. Glad I didn't need to worry about my screenshots when moving my microSD card into the new system.

P.S. really hate that nintendo requires two active nintendo accounts in order to successfully transfer an island. i am the sole user of my old and new switch and had to create an alternate to complete this process :/

On games such as Splatoon 2 when I go on the save data cloud it says "Not supported". Does that mean I can't transfer my save data or is there a way to save my data?
That just means it's not supported for cloud save backup, don't worry though, the save data is transferred when you transfer your user data from one Switch to another by following this video :)

I just got a Splatoon OLED (not sure if anyone else has) and I had a really tough time with setting it up, but this video helped me a lot. The thing was, I had already signed into my account during setup, so I was super confused with all the tutorials. If you transferred your account during the setup, then you need to redownload your games and the press plus while selecting them if the Home Screen and then go to save data cloud. This will transfer your save data for most games, except for Splatoon 2 and Animal Crossing. To transfer Splatoon data, you just need to go to data management and send save data. (Sorry that this is so long) :) Edit: Some other games don’t support cloud save, so you have to manually transfer data.
I'm planning to get a new switch for Christmas. Sadly not an OLED because they been soldout ever since launch. I'm only getting a new one cause the one u have now is messing up. Saw another video a while back, and presumably you can copy the data over to a computer and then copy it back after reformatting. To be fair, he did this when upgrading from a smaller SD card to a larger one for use on the same switch, so not yet sure how that all works or if it would for switching from one console to another. Just bought an OLED the other day, and have been waiting for Micro SD card prices to drop to upgrade, so I'll know more in the near future.

Thanks bro. Your video actually was the savior. My son lost the controller to his brand new switch of 3 days of ownership. I was trying to return it until he lost it as I got him the new OLED. So I ordered a new used controller from ebay and used your video to do all the transferring. Good to go. Then, I found out that there is a way to "find my remote" on the device and we actually found it. So off to the store it goes to be returned and he can enjoy the OLED. We just have to get through today as the screen protector and case are on their way from amazon. Thanks again for the video. Also, I learned about something about some subscription for the year. Good question, I had all mine on the SD card first and that worked fine. Try the transfer and see if they appear, if not then move them to the SD and do it that way

It sucks that I’ve done this process twice now-not in one sitting, I mean with 2 switch consoles over the last few years-and I still get panicky when I see the microSD card can’t initially be read on the new console. Force of habit, I jump the gun thinking I can just copy the backed-up files from the microSD card that I put on a computer, immediately to a new card. But you HAVE to re-download everything from the eShop, the exception to that being your system’s photo album. I don’t know why I make that assumption each time, I just do, thinking I could skip a step or something.
When it comes to redownloading things on the eshop, is that only for the games themselves, or can you redownload any DLC you bought for said games too?
Thanks for tips, only thing you did not mention to download all games and saves would take over 15 hours (on fast internet), missed fireworks in animal crossing because it took so long 🥺

Hey!! great video! very helpful and thanks for showing the SD card behaviour. Also I have a doubt and a very particular case, nothing out of this world but still particular. I have bought a Brand new nintendo switch abroad and I used my same profile but started to use it as a brand new with the Zelda TOTK. Now I am back home and want to transfer my data, from the OLD nintendo switch to this one and I do not want to lose the Zelda BOTW data and the DLC that I have bought. What do you recommend I should do to safely transfer my Zelda BOTW data?

When I linked my Nintendo account to the new user it turned into my main user. Is that supposed to happen?

Tysm for this tutorial! I was panicking so much since I didn’t want to lose my Splatoon or acnh save data. I followed all the steps in this video and it worked perfectly. To anyone still confused I transferred my profile and user data to new switch first. Splatoon 2 transferred over fine. For acnh I downloaded the island transfer tool on my old switch before transferring user profile. I had 2nd account on my old switch to open the tool.

Hi, i got a question, did your splatoon 2 save data transfer with your profile transfer like in the video, or did you have to transfer it manually in some way? Because i wanna upgrade to a switch oled but i dont wanna lose any of my game saves like botw, hyrule warriors, splatoon 2 etc. and im trying to find out how you can transfer these datas.

I have three X-Ranks myself, and still regularly play; so personally I’m afraid to do the transfer to an oled.
I have some clarifying questions, if you don’t mind.
1. Did you transfer your profile before setting up the new switch, like GameXplain or did you have it already set up like in this video?
2. Is your copy of Splatoon 2 physical or digital?
3. If physical, did you download the game update before opening the game?
@@EminenceAlpaca hello it’s been a while since I did it but I’m pretty sure I did everything while setting up the new switch. My Splatoon 2 copy is physical and when you try and open the game it should say there is an update available and you download it and all the save data is there

Thanks mate.....I just received my new Nintendo Switch Oled....took all of maybe 10 minutes setting it up and transferring data.....worked like a charm. Now I am redownloading the games but I am playing BOTW and what a releif to see it started from where i left it.

Fantastic Guide, thank you! I bought the TotK special edition and plan to transfer my data from my launch switch onto it. It's arriving today! But I couldn't get a definitiv answer on how the sd card transfer worked and had some worries about screenshot transfer and this gave me all the answers plus taught me to transfer my ac island seperatly, all with in easy to follow steps. This was the only vid out of many we watched that covered transferring user to a new switch and ACNH island transfer to a new switch on the same vid. We weren’t sure the order to do this in until your vid.

The only thing false about this video is that you can actually get all your games from the sd card you just need a computer. You put the sd card into the computer then "copy" everything off the sd card on to the computer. Then put the sd card into the new switch format it. Put that card back into the computer copy everything back. Dont delete the main folder on the newly formatted card or this will not work. Then back into the new switch and then it should have everything there without having to redownload all the games that were on your sd card

thank you SO MUCH for this :D almost had a panic attack when I plopped my old sd into the OLED and my album was gone, turns out the pics and videos were in system memory on the old one. put the sd card back, transferred them all to the sd card in settings, the put it back in the OLED, everything is right as rain! animal crossing AND pokemon saves!

So I just got my Switch Oled last week and I’m happy you mentioned everything I was worried about. But, my biggest fear is that does anyone know a safe way to transfer Pokémon data? I’ve heard horror stories of people losing their Pokémon data because it doesn’t use the cloud system like Animal Crossing?
Animal crossing doesn't use the cloud system either, providing you've transferred your user account over correctly then your Pokémon data will be transferred too, if it's not there go back to the old switch press the + button when the Pokémon game is selected and transfer saved data :)

This was super helpful! All the info i need in one spot. Just one question though! Will the save data for your games still be there once you redownload (after transferring switches and SD card)? Or does transfering the SD card delete all save data? Like if my Hollow Knight data is saved on the SD card, will i lose my progress once switching my SD card to the new switch?
Save data should automatically save to the system not the SD card but if it has for some reasons then transfer the save data back to the main console and then transfer your user data and it'll transfer with it. Or if you've transferred your user already press the + button on the game on the old switch and select transfer save data. The SD will delete everything other than screenshots I believe.

Yes! It should transfer however if not don't worry! You can manually do it by going to the game tile, press the + button - manage software - transfer your save data. Then follow the on-screen instructions :)

I'm on my old switch now, and I see in the manage software window, that the following games Tetris 99, Smash Bros Ultimate, Super Mario Odyssey, and Pokemon Sword still has their MB of data. How do I get these onto my new OLED? I don't wanna redo all these games from scratch again. That would truly devastating.

Well, after transferring my Pokémon games' save-data, downloading the backup save-data for the rest of my games from the cloud, and reupdating all the software, I'm now right at home on my sweet new Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Edition Switch OLED. Glad I didn't need to worry about my screenshots when moving my microSD card into the new system.

P.S. really hate that nintendo requires two active nintendo accounts in order to successfully transfer an island. i am the sole user of my old and new switch and had to create an alternate to complete this process :/

On games such as Splatoon 2 when I go on the save data cloud it says "Not supported". Does that mean I can't transfer my save data or is there a way to save my data?
That just means it's not supported for cloud save backup, don't worry though, the save data is transferred when you transfer your user data from one Switch to another by following this video :)

I just got a Splatoon OLED (not sure if anyone else has) and I had a really tough time with setting it up, but this video helped me a lot. The thing was, I had already signed into my account during setup, so I was super confused with all the tutorials. If you transferred your account during the setup, then you need to redownload your games and the press plus while selecting them if the Home Screen and then go to save data cloud. This will transfer your save data for most games, except for Splatoon 2 and Animal Crossing. To transfer Splatoon data, you just need to go to data management and send save data. (Sorry that this is so long) :)
Edit: Some other games don’t support cloud save, so you have to manually transfer data.

Saw another video a while back, and presumably you can copy the data over to a computer and then copy it back after reformatting. To be fair, he did this when upgrading from a smaller SD card to a larger one for use on the same switch, so not yet sure how that all works or if it would for switching from one console to another. Just bought an OLED the other day, and have been waiting for Micro SD card prices to drop to upgrade, so I'll know more in the near future.

Thanks bro. Your video actually was the savior. My son lost the controller to his brand new switch of 3 days of ownership. I was trying to return it until he lost it as I got him the new OLED. So I ordered a new used controller from ebay and used your video to do all the transferring. Good to go. Then, I found out that there is a way to "find my remote" on the device and we actually found it. So off to the store it goes to be returned and he can enjoy the OLED. We just have to get through today as the screen protector and case are on their way from amazon. Thanks again for the video. Also, I learned about something about some subscription for the year. I paid the $20 as I am guessing he needs this to add his cousins and they can play together? Thanks.

Quick question. When I do the transfer does it transfer the pictures/ videos from my internal storage to the new switch or do I need to move those to the SD card first in order to move those? Thanks
Good question, I had all mine on the SD card first and that worked fine. Try the transfer and see if they appear, if not then move them to the SD and do it that way

It sucks that I’ve done this process twice now-not in one sitting, I mean with 2 switch consoles over the last few years-and I still get panicky when I see the microSD card can’t initially be read on the new console. Force of habit, I jump the gun thinking I can just copy the backed-up files from the microSD card that I put on a computer, immediately to a new card. But you HAVE to re-download everything from the eShop, the exception to that being your system’s photo album. I don’t know why I make that assumption each time, I just do, thinking I could skip a step or something.

I have bought a Brand new nintendo switch abroad and I used my same profile but started to use it as a brand new with the Zelda TOTK. Now I am back home and want to transfer my data, from the OLD nintendo switch to this one and I do not want to lose the Zelda BOTW data and the DLC that I have bought. What do you recommend I should do to safely transfer my Zelda BOTW data?
