Thank you for the very detailed Tutorial. This has been by far The Best Switch Data Transfer video I've watched. Really hope The Switch 2 can use 1 or 2 TB SD Cards.
Nice and straightforward tutorial thanks! Glad Nintendo didn’t make it difficult knowing how they tend to be very protective over game data and sometimes a little over the top for anti-piracy protocols lol. Though I guess that comes in the ways the Switch won’t load games properly if you try to move games from one Switch to another via SD card.
Thanks for the video, exactly what I needed for my son’s Switch. Followed and steps and it went exactly as mentioned… Except the existing games are not “downloading”. Suggestions?
What do you do if some games say the correct text for downloading but others say the software is not currently on the console . If the software was originally downloaded to a micro SD card please cancel and insert that sd card
2:14 How much storage space would the card folder take on your computer when you paste it onto your desktop? I'm worried it'll be bigger than the space I have.
I followed this process with a SanDisk 1.5TB Ultra microSDXC in July 2024, and unfortunately I had to redownload all the games even after copying the stuff over to the newly formatted card. The switch does recognize the new amount of storage, but it thinks the card is basically empty (1.3 TB of usable space). A few other folks in the comments are reporting similar experiences with having to redownload the games anyway.
Update: the problem was the low quality of sd card. in my case, when I tried to download the games again, after migration, Switch reported that for each game my data is corrupted. and formatting the microsd card only solved it, and I had to download the games in the regular way.
Have followed the instructions but when I have inserted the new memory card. I get the following error 'Corrupted Data Was found' or error code 2002-4057. Any ideas?
I have done everything correctly and this is my second micro sd card for my switch and I clicked the download button but it started redownloading the game is that supposed to happen or did I do something wrong or could it just be slow wifi making it seem like it's redownloading the game
My SD card had 116G on it when I ejected from Computer. Put in the Switch and Data management said only 1.5GB was used. It then asks my to redownload every game at 30-40 mins each.

Excellent guide! WIll try this out, but through using the same microSD Card, transfer all the stuff from it to my Mac or Linux PC, insert and register it with my new TotK OLED Switch, then transfer all the data back on there using the exact same 1 TB microSD Card.

So how do you COPY all the data, so that I can have all the data on TWO Nintendo Switches? You said in the video that is a different process. I recently had to buy a second Switch, and I thought I could just plop the old SD Card into the new Switch, but the device told me I would have to delete ALL the data to format the SD card for THAT Switch.
I think that its actually a very similar process. What I'm pretty sure you'd do is format the new microSD on the new switch, take the old microSD and throw all the data from that onto a computer, then copy it all onto the new microSD. Then plug the old microSD into the first switch and the new microSD into the second switch. You should have 2 separate switches with the same data when you're done, if my speculation is right.
hi thanks for this tutorial. followed this and in my case, when i was about to start a game and download it, it does not reload the game but instead re-downloads it. what could i be doing wrong? will it take another space in my sd card? for example if a game is 12gb and was previously installed, will it download another 12gb file? or will it replace the previous 12gb of game file?

yeah don't do this. Even after doing exactly as shown, every game said it found corrupt data. Then when trying to redownload each one it was still corrupt. Only way to have it not be corrupt was to manually delete the game and do a full redownload. I don't know what changed in 9 months, but I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS METHOD. Wasted two days on this. Just put in the new card and start from scratch. Save out your photos first. edit: even deleting the game and redownloading didn't work. Thanks for the video! Looking for how to transfer data from an old sd card to a new sd card to be used on another switch console? We had to send in an old switch lite console for repairs that ended up being replaced with a new one. What about archived games? Can you download those directly to the new SD card without having to go through the whole transfer process over and over? I have a lot of games I got off the eShop but not enough storage on my SD card to transfer them all at once and most are archived. (I feel like that would be the simpler process anyway just archive everything on the old card, switch in the new card and redownload…)
When you archive a game, all that stays on the Switch is the save data. Most save date is (to my knowledge) kept on the Switch’s internal system memory; but in the event that you have (or even can) transfer it, it should come along with this transfer process. If it however is saved onto the system memory (as I believe it should be) then you don’t need to transfer it, since it’s just sitting on your Switch. The obviously downside of doing this repeatedly or for many games, is that you will have to wait for the Switch to download all these games one by one (which is much slower than the data-transfer speeds of modern USB:s).
@@Boundwithflame23 Then I think that’s just easier, yeah! Just make sure to archive everything before you take out the old microSD card! After that, you go to “Data Management” and “Save Data”, and make sure that all of the data is on the System Memory (just in case it’s not a guaranteed thing). Then you can proceed with turning off the Switch, replacing the microSD with the new microSD. After turning the Switch back on you still have to go through the steps of formatting the new card; and I maintain the recommendation that the video gives: you should definitely keep the old card (without deleting the data) for a few weeks, if something goes badly. After some time has passed, you can safely use the old cards (and format it first if you want to cleanse it) with a camera or android phone if you’d like! (WARNING!!: if you have screenshots and videos saved on your Switch, it is likely that (some of, if not all of) that stuff is stored on your microSD card too. If you any to keep it, probably want to copy that to a PC. There is a different method to do this; you can use any USB-C USB cable to connect your Switch to a PC. Then you can go to a section in the Switch’s settings to enter a ‘Transfer Mode’, and in that mode your PC can access the Switch’s album folder and you can just copy them over!)
