The flashback that started the episode was a treat. We got young Mariner being adorable and Wil Wheaton valiantly trying to sound like his younger self with hilarious results.
It was so cute, and so heartwarming 🥺
Gotta love that voice crack Wil Wheaton put into it. 😁
Thanks Ren! 'Lower Decks' is fast becoming my favorite Trek behind TOS.
So glad you're enjoying it! It's definitely one of my favorites too!
Ah, what an incredibly satisfying season finale. Boimler is going to be an *amazing* captain someday. Love seeing the Cerritos doing the thing it was literally designed to be the best in Starfleet at to help win the day in the climax (was also nice to see it not almost get destroyed in a finale for once too). Mariner probably has the best character arc in a TV show since Zuko in Avatar: The Last Airbender. She's fought so hard, & so realistically, for her mental health while still being extremely entertaining character in an entertainment medium and it feels so incredibly earned.
It's also kinda crazy no one (ahem, Sean) ever considered the possibility that the OG TNG Lower Decks episode (and its predecessor The First Duty) might someday play a huge role in a show with a deep, abiding love for the franchise's lore that is literally named after it. Like, bruh. All the necessary foreshadowing was right there in the title.
But anyway, my only nitpick is how little time & cajoling it took for Nova Fleet to bail on Pari... I mean Locarno. But that's the format, not the writing, which still made a genuine effort to justify it. Love this show. Love your reviews. You deserve all of the subscribers. Excited for more Trek Was Always Political. DS9 is gonna be a *doozy*, whenever you get to it. Take care.
Thank you so much! ❤️
I agree the resolution of Nova Fleet felt a smidge rushed, too bad they couldn't make the episode a three parter 😅
Love the comparison to Zuko! There are definitely some interesting parallels in their journies and development!
3:32 I like how "Mariner" is a verb now.
It's gotta be 🤣🤣 she mariners so hard so often
8:10 Also gotta love how excited Billups gets at possibly seeing a mind meld. 😆
So cute 😭
I love your Trek reviews however when you mentioned "Extreme Risk" you went from a good TrekTuber to an absolute expert in my humble personal opinion! Keep up the good work! I love it!
Omg thank you so much!
it had more action then your typical Star Wars Disney+ Show
I don't usually love too much action, but they're definitely doing a good job juggling action and more laid back stuff
Lower Decks! Lower Decks! Lower Decks!
The chant gets me every time 🥺❤️
While I would have loved to see Sito revealed to be alive (and I even thought they might go that route) I am ultimately glad they didn't. I'm sure they could have made it work well, but it would have somewhat undermined the emotional punch of going back to the original LD episode. Great coverage this season! Here's to what's next!
I think you're right about that!
I'm personally hoping we get more flashbacks to her to show her effect on Mariner.
If the "Starfleet Academy" Show morphs into flashbacks like these...I might actually be more interested in it! haha @@Brasswatchman
Admiral Vassery probably just wanted to check his sense-oars.
He does love a good oar 😂
Great review. Wonder if the crewmen in hiding might be seen again. Thank you.
I hope so! It would be fun to see how the different crews deal with functional exile
Sorry I missed the premier. This was a killer episode.
So all my predictions were wrong, except maybe one. I was really hoping to see Thomas Riker this episode, especially considering he was mentioned in the previous episode. I thought that he would be essential to motivate the plot for this episode. However, the writers found something even bigger:
Two huge love letters from the best movies in TOS and TNG.
The whole episode played out brilliantly with motifs and callbacks to Wrath of Khan and First Contact.
2:04 Thank you for the Scroll Mouse mention 😁
2:10 I love the spartan white corridor style. Very Enterprise-A-ish. Also very SNW-ish.
3:04 Yep. I knew they couldn't do this episode without referencing the Maquis. It would have been rude not to.
3:48 That there was no moment scripted later in the episode for Carol to tell Beckett how proud she was is a criminal omission.
4:00 Callback to First Contact when Picard announces he is disobeying orders.
4:11 Callback to First Contact Data: "To hell with our orders." Also Undiscovered Country Spock: "Go to hell."
4:31 Big miss here. They should have scripted the Reliant prefix code: 16309.
5:35 Boimler literally calls her a Shax-and-a-half. 🤣🤣🤣
5:55 Ok, this bit of sloppy retcon irritated me the entire episode. The established canon regarding the binars since their TNG appearance is that they literally cannot function except in pairs. So how did three of them work together to make a giant space shield? A little exposition would have been nice.
7:09 Migleemo was robbed! Robbed I say!
8:41 Brilliant callback to the Mutara Nebula in ROK.
10:39 For only the third time we get to see the California class' MASSIVELY overpowered tractor beam. It's not only the work truck of Starfleet, it's also the tow-truck.
12:21 Callback to the accretion rings in ROK when planet Genesis forms.
14:25 Tendi GLOMPS Rutherford. 😮 I did not see that coming.
14:50 I have seen Tendi angry. But this is terrifying.
So the one prediction I got right was that a main cast member would be leaving the ship. I really thought Jack Quaid was done with the series, but clearly he's still in. So far Boimler and Mariner have left and come back. Shax left and came back, and Captain Freeman kind of left when she was under house arrest. So we know we haven't seen the last of Tendi. But the awesome foursome dynamic will be totally different without her.
I really don't know what season five will bring. I think the season opener should be a ceremony for T'Lyn's formal commissioning as a permanent Starfleet officer. Maybe have some recurring friction between T'Lyn and Sokel. I can see Mariner continuing to seek more productive methods of healing, such as meditation sessions with T'Lyn. Perhaps that will form a basis for a deeper relationship between them after Mariner gets closure with Jennifer. Rutherford will recruit Goodgy to help kidnap Tendi back to the Cerritos. Boimler will replicate raisins or something; I don't know, I really have no guesses to hazard for him.
Mariner's arc resolution this season closes the door on some major issues. There are some other issues still unresolved. Does T'Lyn's Bendii syndrome come back? Is there more in Rutherford's past to rediscover? Are we ever going to see evil Boimler in Section 31 again? No idea, so I'll stay tuned with all of you.
Great observations as always!
I definitely didn't expect Tendi to go anywhere either! I hope she comes back sooner rather than later 🥺
I'd definitely love to see Mariner and T'Lyn end up together and connecting over meditation would be such a clever way to have them spend more one on one time together!
0:08 Heck, he's using the Kolvoord Starburst -- y'know, the *maneuver that got his friend killed* -- as his "movement"'s logo! Kinda sums up where Locarno's priorities are.
Seriously, it's in such poor taste 😭
this was a Great Season 4 finale and this Series was truly incredible
Well, I left a comment with a bunch of recommendations but it was apparently auto-deleted as spam so uh... Great work TH-cam. Anyway good review, as usual. Maybe I'll try the recommendations on Twitter later when I'm less annoyed.
Sorry about that! I sure wish TH-cam would stop auto deleting people's comments 😭
@@renrants TH-cam does more shadow-banning than Muhammed Ali did shadow-boxing. 😤
It's so weird and frustrating, but I'll just keep chugging along till the algorithm is nice to me again 😅😭
No MOOPSY return 0/10 😝 nah very solid series and a finale that kept the quality going. Someone at the tail end of the Premiere chat suggested Red Dwarf as a follow up sci-fi series to watch and I'd like to second that suggestion always intrigued to see people's reactions to it.
Ooh I've been meaning to watch Red Dwarf since high school, that's a good excuse to check it out! :)
@@renrants Dwarf is definitely worth a watch if you stick with it. Enjoy!
Huzzah! I can't wait :)
this was truly a Great finale to Season 4 of Star Trek Lower Decks and this maybe my favorite Star Trek series the characters are great and the sci-fyi adventures are Great
It's so fun, it's kind of amazing how this silly little parody created characters with such depth, and their attention to detail with the references and continuity is really something special
5:06 I’m sure I’m not alone in this, but the way I rationalise the command codes thing in my head is that it’s also based around voice recognition, maki g sure not just anyone could use them (there are probably countless examples to the contrary, but it just makes it work in my head, so I roll with it). Whether the writers thought of that at the time I’ve no idea, but in this age of triple layer security it makes it make sense to me. It also helps me rationalise how Mariner was able to make it work, as her voiceprint would be similar enough to Freeman for the computer to accept.
That's an interesting theory, I like it!
I have a feeling that Tendi's sister overseeing those two criminal enterprises saying she can't work with the Fedration right now. Yeah, I bet next season that's going to come back to bite her in some way. Like these two criminal enterprises will find out about this whole thing and like I said it will not look good that she messed them over in the deal in regards to that broken Orion ship.
Yeah I'm definitely curious about what the fallout will be on that for sure
I really did enjoy seeing the steamrunner back. Was my favourite ship of that era heh.
The one thing that has annoyed me about Lower Decks, is only 10 episodes. Given it is a cartoon, you'd think they could pump out a few more episodes... I mean Trek did 24 episodes a season previously; and that was live action ;)
I also think it will be very interesting to see the next season as to how the characters further develop. I do wonder if the dialogue with the Klingon captain we like so much will become a thing - given that he would be in disgrace for loss of his ship, and that he didn't die. A little bit like T'Lynn, but it isn't likely they could dop a story arc like that though.
They have said more T'Lynn in season 5, so i suspect that they will dilute Tendi's time a little to squeeze that in, at least in the first few episodes.
Might also be fun to see you review the 4 worst episodes in each series of Star Trek.
I definitely wish they did more episodes, I don't know why streaming has decided 10 is the magic number, I get 24+ isn't realistic with anything approaching quality, but c'monnn
I hope next season we focus a little more on Boimler, Rutherford, and of course T'Lyn since this season was really heavy on development for Mariner and Tendi. I hope Tendi doesn't spend too much time away or at least stays in touch with the LD gang!
Reviewing some of Trek's worst episodes would be so much fun. Honestly I love a lot of the terrible episodes as much as the good ones 🤣
Just for a laugh - i was just rewatching Episode 1. Mariner did get him in the Captains chair (as she promised) - though indirectly, and within a year (apparently all 4 seasons have happened in the same year) - so she was effective there@@renrants
Nah, I think Ma'ah is gonna be fine. It's probably pretty standard for new Klingon captains to have a few hiccups while solidifying their power. Besides, did you see the way he ripped out that guy's throat with his teeth?! Even Klingon High Command has to respect how metal that was.
You know, it occurs to me that we never saw what Tendi's quarters looked like in the midst of all this.
Ooh that's a good point! Have we seen Mariner's either? 🤔
@@renrants Don't think so. I've been curious about that too.
10:50. That's not a shuttle it was the captains jaught. First time it was actually used.
Good catch, I didn't catch that till I'd already recorded the video
0:47 Side note -- did you notice the part after this where Nick played on Wesley's dad issues (especially vis a vis Captain Picard) to get him to go along with it? Guess Locarno's always had a talent for manipulation...
Yeah, that was so manipulative!!
the performer that plays "rutherford" on "lower decks" is in that unwatchable show "loki".. a sort of "rosencrantz and guildenstern" video about just that character's part on the show might be fun..
I have to admit this Star Trek Lower Deck Season 4 turn out be the best as Mariner, Boimler, Tendi and Rutherford became Lieutenant Junior while facing a lot of challenge. Every episodes are great but I am a little dsappointed that the writer never made an episode featuring Mariner and Jennifer at all in fact in episode 8 I was expecting Jennifer to join in the mission with Mariner so she could work things out with Mariner by amending this misunderstanding back in season 3 and be just friends but I have been told that it will happen in next year Star Trek Lower Deck Season 5 which it would mean that we will have to wait until next year😒.
The final episode of Star Trek Lower Deck Season 5 is good except for Tendi to leave the Cerrito to return to her home planet Orion but watching at the end of the episode feels more like a cliffhanger because Tendi looks like she's turning evil after seeing her eyes. Well we're going to have to find until next year to see if Tendi will return to Cerritos and her friends.
I think characters leaving and coming back has become a staple for the Cerritos. So far Boimler, Mariner, and Shax all left and came back. Captain Freeman didn't leave voluntarily but was absent under house arrest. Tendi will be back either of her free will or kidnapped by Rutherford.
"Ok Goodgy. I know you're good and not bad like Badgy, but we gotta do this for Tendi. She needs us."
still going to plan on getting a bunch of Star Trek shows on Blu-Ray this Christmas Season of the first and second seasons of Both Lower Deck and Strange New Worlds as well as the complete Series of the original Star Trek Series
Hell yeah! I bought TNG and Voyager this year because they're the ones I can't live without, but I'm trying to collect them all to the extent they're available
do they have complete series Blu-Ray sets to Both of The Next Generation and Voyager? I'll savor those for my birthday night year@@renrants
4:30 So much for biometrics, eh? She didn't even put "Freeman" at the start of her password!
Yeah, and she didn't even disguise her voice like Data did when he stole Picard command codes in Brothers in TNG
@@renrants I suspect Freeman must've taken verification off of that specific command code for some reason. Some cybersecurity guy at Starfleet Headquarters must be tearing his hair out. 😁
Evidently Brad BOymler0 does realize on some level the resemblance between between Tom and Nick when he makes his remark about the Maquis he calls Nick Tom
Oh wow, I totally missed that, great catch 😅
It's interesting that Tendi isn't Prime anymore...but she's still Mistress of the Winter Constellations? I would have thought that title would transfer.
That is interesting, I wonder what D'Erika's title is
@@renrants She might be just a Warrior Queen like her mom. But yeah... something interesting's going on with those titles. I can feel it.
I'm excited to see more of Orion next season
@@renrants I'm personally hoping we see more of B'rt!
5:49 Headcanon/fanfic moment: I think B'Eth would've too. I can just imagine her whining to D'Vana about it later back on Orion:
B: _"Buuuuuut_ I wanted to fight the hot Bajoran guy!"
D: "You'll ju -- wait, Shaxs? Really?"
B: "Oh ho yeah! Not only does he have the scarred-up silver fox thing going on, but that full-on berserker rage? Woof." _(fans self)_ "Do you even know what that does to me?!?"
D: "I was definitely worried about it doing *something* to you!"
(Which is the real reason she chose Migleemo, I suspect. She's known B'Eth since they were kids. Of course she wanted to take her out in a relatively painless way. Too bad Migleemo _still_ managed to fuck it up. 😆)
Omg 🤣 I love it
Can we appreciate shax for a minute. He was full papa bear here.
We appreciate Shaxs ALWAYS on this channel, he's best bear 🥺💖
@@renrants much love to best bear
this is a Great Star Trek animated Series
It definitely is 😂
15:28 Eh, I can't see him going after her right now. As it is, she _chose_ to return to Orion of her own volition, and Rutherford's not the type to ignore or disrespect her wishes. Now, if something happens that harms her or puts her in danger -- THEN things might get interesting. But until then...
Oh yeah, I'd hope there'd be some driving reason for him to get involved 😅
hope this shows gets picked up for two more seasons this was truly a Great Star Trek series same with Strange New Worlds
If Paramount cancels them we riot! 😤😤😤😤
DAM Right We Riot us Star Trek needs need justice @@renrants
In Star Trek Armada, steamrunner class ships are used as long range artillery. I believe this is the first time they are used in canon; or forefront.
I got Armada on GOG. ...My laptop doesn't have a disc drive.
That's so cool!
According the one of the series producers, the ship Mariner steals isn't Steamrunner-class, but rather a smaller version called a Sabrerunner-class. That might help explain the difference.
17:10 Yeah, but even back then it was ambiguous if he was actually doing it for his friends or if it was just a means for him to save face as much as he could once the truth was revealed. Given how he acts in this episode, the latter seems more likely.
I guess that's a good point, I never read it that way 😅
I heard this season was the bomb, butfor me it was behind a paywall...
I'm so sorry to hear that!
Allegedly you can find it on watchcartoononline 👀
14:34 Right?!? Ugh, the poor guy! He looks like a Nausicaan tore out his heart and replaced it with a biomechanical substitute.
_Edit:_ I knew we'd be getting a "Rutherford loses Tendi" arc at some point, considering we've seen the opposite three times before now. Can't say I expected it to happen like this, though.
I hope he and Tendi at least stay in touch while she pirates
@@renrants If she can, anyway. After all, she's not just a pirate, she's a pirate _assassin._ Having to spend most of one's time in stealth gameplay mode doesn't tend to lend itself well to long-distance relationships, I fear.
That is true 😭
#Tenderford
He's gonna miss her so much 😭😭😭
Unfair technical loss.
For real!
Migleemo might've still taken it if he hadn't tapped out!
2:16 Right?!?
4:50 The computer has to know who is the person giving these voice command instructions. So that is why command codes are assigned to each person.
But it makes no sense that others can also use that same command codes without providing any biometric scan first.
But then again if you have to provide a biometric scan first, then why is there any need for giving command codes?
My theory is that, if your voice signature itself is the biometric scan added with your command codes then how could anyone else use it? I am confused.
It is confusing, especially because in Brothers in TNG, Data imitated Picard's voice to use his command codes
@@renrants Yes, yes, yes, I remember that episode. You are correct. Wow, how can you remember all of this? I cannot even remember people's names.
This means my theory is correct, so "Star Trek Lower Decks" did not follow the guidelines to make writing easy. Otherwise there was no way Mariner could have taken that ship. Even Larno could not understand how she did it.
Interestingly, when they transfer the ownership of the star ship they only use one biometric finger print scan and that is it, done transferring. Now how does that work? This process looks too simple in my opinion.
TNG and Voyager are my comfort shows so I've watched them through a lot 😅
I agree the finger print transfer feels way too easy for the transfer of something as huge as a starship.
@@renrants Yah, this is all because of lazy writing.
So many Hollywood movies and shows are ruined just because they could not write something better for the plot to happen.
I don't like at all, Hollywood sucks.
Yeah, it's a minor thing in terms of the overall story, but it does strain a little at the ol' suspension of disbelief 🤣
20:16 Have you watched any Doctor Who or Farscape? How about the latest She-Ra cartoon from a few years ago?
I love Dr. Who, I'll probably review the new episodes when they come out! I love Farscape too, an underrated treasure! :)
Ooh she ra would also be fun for sure!
@@renrants There's also Gravity Falls if you've never seen that. Or is that like one of the sci-fi/fantasy essentials at this point?
@@renrants Also another Farscape fan yessssssssssss. Finding another one always makes me happy. 😁
Sad that it's been cancelled :(
I'm so upset 😭😭😭
Same. It's so frustrating.
@rogue265 truly 😭 I understand why but I'm still mad
