Can I Really Justify Seeing Pictures of Jesus In The Old Testament?

  • "Typology" is a fancy word for how God put intricate details about Jesus throughout the stories of the Old Testament. I'm not talking about prophecy here, although there is a relationship between typology and prophecy. I'm saying that Jesus is the main topic of the Bible so much that God shaped history and people's lives so that the Bible would become a beautiful literary tapestry that shows Jesus throughout it's pages. From the story of Joseph going from slavery and presumed death to the right hand of Pharaoh as a savior of many, to the feasts of Israel demonstrating the very nature and mission of Jesus to die for our sins.
In today's interview I will explain what "typology" is, give a number of examples of it and answer objections to it.
Thanks to Micah Gunn for having me on his podcast, Truth Be Told, to do this interview.

Sometimes when a person claims the Bible is man-made, instead of jumping into apologetics I almost feel like it would be sufficient to say "you just can't make this stuff up". The more you read and the more in-depth you study the Bible, that much becomes clear.

Mike you have no idea what a blessing this is to me... as a young Christian I remember distinctly reading my Bible and suddenly the the Holy Spirit illuminated Joseph as a figure of Christ... I started to look at detail after detail and it was unmistakable. I shouted to my wife hey look at this and this and even remember where I was sitting specifically. I wasn't even aware that typology existed at that point. Within days I was listening to a sermon by Dr. Adrian Rogers and his sermon was Joseph a portrait of Jesus outlining the very verses God revealed unto me... I had missed that Joseph had a gentile bride. Later I found out about A.W. Pink and gleanings in Genesis as well.
Last I call myself Jeptha because he didn't get much respect from his brethren and yet when they had to fight they would call on him and I am by nature an apologist. That Jeptha is listed in the champions of the faith in Hebrews chapter 11 is encouraging to me.

I so agree about the coolness behind typology. I was so lucky kid I grew up with a mother who was very biblically literate and we attended a church that was very biblically found my mother taught children in every kind of teaching atmosphere you could imagine. I learned about the typology of the Tabernacle in intricate detail from the time I was in 4th grade. Just so proud of the legacy my mom left behind in her kids. She was weak in other parenting areas but she intelligently and patiently caught her children to know the deep things of God and to seek them out. As far as I'm concerned she was a complete success as a parent

I think it's possible to argue that John 4 makes the connection with Joseph as a type of Christ. There are three (admittedly slender) threads connecting John 4 with Joseph:
      1. we're told that Sychar is "near to the land which Jacob gave to his son Joseph" (John 4:5)
      2. Christ is called "a man who told me all things I had ever done" (John 4:29) - the Revealer of secrets
      3. the Samaritans call Christ "the Savior of the world" (John 4:42)
#2 and #3 seem to be a reference to Genesis 41:45
There does also seem to be a connection between the woman of Sychar and Asenath. Asenath is mentioned three times by name, and each time we're reminded she was the daughter of the priest of On. It's like we're being reminded constantly, "don't forget this is an idolater!"

I'm more interested in who people are and what groups they come from. For example, the Amalekites that attack Israel as they leave Egypt are descended from Lot's incestuous relationship with his daughter. If you aren't paying attention to the names, you might miss the fact that the Amalekites should have been friends to Israel since they shared a family history. I think God judges Amalek more harshly because of this.

One of my favorite types not discussed in NT is Numbers 35 and cities of refuge. They are Levite cities. So people flee to the priests, as we flee to our high priest. And they stay there until the death of the high priest and then can go to their inheritance. So we are set free to go to our inheritance by the death of the ultimate high priest, Jesus.

A big part of my walk with God has been his revealing of these types whenever I read scripture and has been awe inspiring each time ... with a background in philosophy and psychology, I can see how it is easy to be recklessly creative because I almost fell down that hole by conflating the typological with the archetypal, and especially when it comes to things involving more metaphysical concepts ... A good litmus test for me has been to test whether they can be subjective and hence can warp the already laid out literal understanding of the bible, if the answer is yes, I steer clear, ... if they confirm said understanding or even amplify it, then I know I'm on the right path.

If you don't have an answer to them, that's fine, but telling someone to 'shut up' for asking a question is not only unnecessarily rude, it represents the Christian faith poorly and goes against the very Christian ideal of helping those who are 'blind' to 'see'.
Attacking the questioner without attempting to answer the question often leaves the impression that your frustration stems from an inability to answer it. There is absolutely nothing wrong with not having an immediate answer to a question, and nothing wrong with saying, 'I don't know', for then you can commence the process of trying to find an answer.
I have not yet had a reasonable answer to the questions of, "Why would a god require glory?", and "Why would a god ever derive glory from the acts of humans?". I have arrived at answers of my own, but I'm interested in the opinions of others.

@@futilitarian3809 God is sovereign. He is above all things. He's of great worth. Why would we not give Him glory for all things. As followers of Christ we believe that all things come from God through faith in Christ (Romans 11:36). Also our understanding of the scriptures is revealed or given to us by the Holy Spirit (John 14:26/John 16:13). We also glorify God for sending His Son Jesus Christ to die on the behalf of His fallen creation. We glorify God because Christ didn't just die but He raised from the dead and ascended into heaven where He stands before our Father in heaven as our advocate pleading our case.

I'd love to get your opinion, Brother Mike, on Ezekiel 9:4-6 where the Lord tells the angel (or angels?) to go throughout the city and put a mark on the foreheads of everyone who grieved over the sins being committed in Israel. The "mark" spoken of here is literally the tav, the last letter in the Hebrew aleph bet. Today it looks very different from the way it was written in Ezekiel's time. Back then it was written like our lower case "t" (without the tiny crook at the bottom)...which bears a striking resemblance to a cross.
Do you suppose that that might be a foreshadowing or hint at the Messiah to come?

An angelic visitation announced the miraculous conception & calling of a son who was to be savior of Israel. *The Binding of Isaac is a type of Jesus Christ:*
*God ordered Abraham to offer his son Isaac as a sacrifice and He calls Isaac the "only Son"* (Gen 22,2) *despite the fact that Abraham had another Son, Ishmael.*
*God also has many sons, for example the angels, but He has an "only Son", Jesus, which is the Son of God in a unique way* (John 3,16).
*Abraham took his son Isaac and laid the wood upon him, and Isaac carried the wood on the mount in the land of Moriah* (Gen 22,6), *and then Isaac was laid upon the wood to get sacrificed* (Gen 22,9).
*The romans laid the wooden cross upon Jesus and He had to carry it as He walked upon the mount in the land of Moriah* (Lk 23,26), *and they laid Him on the cross and crucified Him.*
*The land of Moriah was later called Jerusalem, and Moriah became the temple mountain* (2. Chr. 3,1). *But the binding of Isaac was not on the mount Moriah itself, but on a mount in the land of Moriah* (Gen 22,2), *maybe Golgatha, where Jesus was crucified over 2000 years later.*
*Isaac asked his father: "where is the lamb for a burnt offering?" And Abraham said: "My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering."* (Gen 22,7-8)
*Then after God stopped Abraham before he sacrificed his son, God gave a ram and they sacrificed the ram instead of Isaac* (Gen 22,13).
*Jesus is the lamb of God* (John 1,29), *that was given by God as a sacrifice. Jesus laid down His life and took the punishment we deserve, in our place. He died instead of us, so that we can have the eternal life* (John 3,16).
*The ram was caught in a thicket by his horns* (Gen 22,13).
*They platted a crown of thorns and put it upon the head of Jesus* (Mt 27,29).
*Abraham called the place "Jehovahjireh", that is, "The Lord will provide"* (Gen 22,14). *Abraham acknowledges he was enacting a prophecy of something God Himself would provide in the future. The story tells us what will be provided: the only son.*

*Moses is a type of Jesus Christ*
Similarities and contrasts between Moses and Jesus:
*- Both were born at a time when Israel was under foreign domination*
(Moses - Egyptian bondage / Jesus - Roman bondage)
*- Both had rulers that tried to kill them shortly after their births*
    Ex 1,15-22 / Mt 2,16-18
*- Both began their ministry after a period of 400 years in which God did not speak to Israel*
*- Both spent their childhood in egypt.*
*- Both spent time in the wilderness before taking on their callings*
    Ex 3 / Mt 4,1-11
*- The israelites rejected Moses the first at his first comming, so he gave water to the heatens first* (Ex 2,17) *and later to the israelites* (Ex 17,1-6). *The mass of the people of Israel rejected Jesus at His first comming, so He gives the nations first of the water of life, and later the israelites* (Acts 3,26; 7,25-29; Romans 11)
*- Moses stood up against the bad shepards which did not want to give water to the sheeps* (Ex 2,16-19); *Jesus, the good shepard* (John 10,11), *stood up against the bad shepards* (Ezk 34), *which did not want to give the sheeps the water of life* (Mt 23,13) *and gave the sheeps from the water of life for free* (Jes 12,3; 49,10; John 7,37-39; Rev 21,6; 22,17).
    *- Both were sheperds*
    Ex 3,1 / Joh. 10,11
    *- Both were prophets*
    Deut 34,10 / John 6,14
    *- Both were priests*
    Ex 40 / Hebr 4,14
    *- Both were judges*
    Ex 18,13 / John 5,24-30
    *- Both were teachers*
    Deut 4,5 / John 18,20
*- Moses was a prophet, i.e. a person through whom God spoke to people. Jesus, the Word of God incarnate, is the ultimate fulfillment of all prophethood, the ultimate prophet. God speaks as a man to people directly.*
*- Moses was the mediator between God and man; Jesus is God and man at the same time and thus the ultimate mediator, the bridge, between God and man.*
    Ex 32,30-32; Ex 5,22; Num 11,11-15 / 1. Tim. 2,5; 1. Joh. 2,1
*- Both were humble and voluntarily made slaves even though they were part of a royal family.*
    Num 12,3; Hebr. 11,24-26 / Phil. 2,5-8
*- Moses turned water to blood and Jesus turned water to wine*
    Ex 7,20 / John 2,9
*- Moses divided the sea and Jesus calmed the sea*
    Ex 14,16 / Mt 8,23-27
*- Moses walked through the divided water and Jesus walked on the water*
    Ex 14,22 / Mt 14,25
*- Both dealt with folks who hardened their hearts*
    Ex 8,15 / Mk 6,45-52
*- Through Moses the law was given; through Jesus the law was fulfilled.*
    Deut 31,9 / Mt 5,17
*- Moses hit the rock, so that the water gush out if and the israelites could survive* (Ex 17,1-6). *Jesus is the rock* (Deut 32,15; 1. Cor 10,4), *that was hit* (Jea 53,10) *and from whom the water of life gushes* (Jer 17,13; Ps 36,10; John 4,10-14) *so that all who believe in Him do not perish but have eternal life* (John 3,16).
*- Both had outstretched arms with 2 men beside them, and in both cases there was a war going on. In Moses’ case, it was a physical war with Amalek. In Christ’s case, it was a spiritual war with the devil.*
    Ex 17,8-16 / Mt 27,38
*- Moses wanted to make an atonement for the sins of his people and asked that his name be erased from the book of life; Jesus gave his life for the sins of his people.*
    Ex 32,30-32 / Jes 53,8
*- Moses like Jesus has unique relationship with the Father.*
    Num 12,6 / Mt 11,27; John 1,18
*- Both fasted for 40 days*
    Ex 34,28; Lk 4,2
*- Both sent out 12 men*
    Num 13 / Lk 9,1-6
*- Both fed hungry people in a wilderness*
    Ex 16 / Mk 8,1-9
*- Because the Israelites sinned against God, they were punished by venomous snakes; they bit the people and many Israelites died. Then Moses prayed for the people, and God ordered Mose to build a snake out of bronze and put it in a pole, and anyone who is bitten can look at it and live* (Num 21,6-9).
*Snakes do symbolize sins* (Gen 3), *and sins lead to death* (Ez 18,4). *We need Jesus, who took our sins upon Himself on the cross, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life* (John 3,16).
*- Not Moses, but Joshua (hebrew name of Jesus) brought the Israelites in the promised land. Not the law of Mose will bring us in heaven, but Jesus Christ.*
*- Both died but did not stay in their burial places*
    Deut 34,5-6 / Mt 17,1-9; Mt 28
    And many more
