If the bible isn't true and is mere mythology then it doesn't really matter whether or not Jesus claimed to be God. But Bart and Alex both know deep down that the bible(God's word) is completely true and authoritative. Thus if they can show us that it doesn't support Jesus's divinity then we must accept it for God's word must be accepted.
Sadly, this is just a hateful attack on the Son of God. But no one ever had a reason to hate the perfect Christ. As He Himself said "They hated Me without reason." John 15:25
I see no reason why Jesus would not call himself god as going by the verses of the Old Testament the only difference between Adam and god was eternal life, so are we not gods, yes you are (Psalms) and so was Jesus.
I think the current fixation for Jesus being god in the church is just theocracy making him the most important sacrifice. So they had to make the trinity etc etc
EHRMAN DENIEES JESUS’ CLAIM TO BE THE SON OF MAN BECAUSE HE KNOWS IT IS A CLAIM TO B GOD
By Ehrman’s criterion of DISSIMILARITY, not only is Mark a reliable Gospel but the verses quoted from here are valid because Jesus refers to the son of man in the third person [see Ehrman, “How Jesus became God”, p59, pdf version]
Premise 1: The Messiah sits at the right hand of God [Mark 12:35-37]
Premise 2: The son of man who comes on the clouds, sits at the right hand of God [Mark 14:62]
Conclusion 1: The messiah is the Son of Man who comes with the clouds.
Premise 3 (from conclusion 1): The Messiah is Son of man who comes with the clouds.
Premise 4: Jesus identifies himself as the Messiah [Mark 14:61-63]
Conclusion 2: Jesus, claims to be the Messiah, son of Man, who comes with the clouds.
Premise 5: The Son of Man is given worship that is due to only God! [Daniel 7:13-14, the word for worship here is פְלַח [pelach, Strong's number 6399 ] and is used in Daniel ONLY for deity, not persons [compare Daniel 3:14, 3:17]
Premise 6: Coming on the clouds is an Old Testament motif applied to only God! [Isaiah 19:1, Psalm 104:3]
Premise 7: The son of MAN IN Ezekiel, shares God’s glory [Ezekiel 1:26-28]
Premise 8: Ehrman agrees, noting in his book that the Son of Man sits on the throne of God and shares His power! [Ehrman, How Jesus became God, read from p39]
Premise 9: God shares His glory with no other being [Isaiah 42:8]
Conclusion 3: The Son of Man Equal to God in nature.
Premise 10 (from conclusion 3): The son of man is God.
Premise 11 (from conclusion 2): Jesus claims to be the Son of man

So true, lol. What Christians don't realize is that these debates sound like an argument about whether Han shot first or if Balrogs have wings to a lot of us nonbelievers.
Like, I can get into any of those debates for the sake of doing it, but then I pull back and think how weird it is that _people assign cosmic, existential importance to the issue of whether Balrogs have wings..._

Thanks Alex and Bart. Excellent video. :)
People often say, “I’m not hurting anyone so it’s ok to sin (lying, stealing, sexual sins, disrespecting parents etc)” The same God who said to love your neighbour first said to love Him to the best of your ability. If you carry on sinning, then you do not love God but are selfish like the devil so you will be joined to your father in hell or repent of your sins and believe in Jesus as God so Jesus adopts you as His child and you will join Him in Heaven forever.

Jesus did say He was God.
And he did say it in Matthew and Luke.
This is just ONE example.
This first one Jesus clearly say He is God.
When Jesus was tempted of the devil He tells Him He is God.
Luke 4 And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
2 Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered.
3 And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread.
4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.
5 And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
6 And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.
7 If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.
8 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
9 And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence:
10 For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee:
11 And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
12 And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
13 And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.
14 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.
15 And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all.
Matthew 4 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.
3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,
6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;
9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.
10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.
8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;
9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.
10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

I'm Christian, so I'm very biased against the argument from the start, but it seems incredibly unlikely to me that the "historical Jesus" did not claim to be God, he was killed for blasphemy (and rose from the dead, although non-Christians would dispute this so we'll set it aside) and then all his closest followers got this brutally wrong and claimed he was God.
That another reason why I can not be a godless alone person: well I am not jelous and desperate because other people have God in their life and trust him, while you have not 8but you can not admit)... The reason behind thos godless alone people talk always about God and Christianity is that there is nothing much to talk about Aheims... it is just an empty Cult, plus it does not lead to anywhere and leads to nothing.. . then atheism lead only to the lonlynes (as you do not have God in your miserable Life, we have what you do not, you Idiot)... And you run to kiss godless ass for that... You just worth as your cult, so : 0... No respect for you...
But let's hope for a better generation, this one is so lost... They left God for nothing.
Let's really Hope in a better generation. (and keep remember God is what you do not know, and as any Goddenier you are a lier).
(Do not write me, you are not wroth of my time)
They are realy pathetic as their cult called Atheism... and can not pity for that... and mostly kiss godless ass that talks contantly and more then we believers about Christianity and God, you can not be that stupid and alone to do not get there is something broken and wrong in atheims and its BS. No respect for you.
Atheims is full BS and trash (nothing good on it)!
The idea that the Jews wanted him killed for blasphemy is a later creation of Roman gentile Christians who wanted to shift the blame for the death of Christ. Jesus was crucified for the crime of attempted treason, for claiming to be the king of the Jews, when the Roman Empire claimed control over Judea. There were definitely Jews who viewed him as blasphemous, but he was brought to Roman authorities under the charge that he would cause another Jewish revolt against the empire, so Rome killed him. Also, we have no works for his original disciples, only from anonymous Greek writers, who obviously plagiarized each other, so no one is saying his disciples were wrong, because we don't even know what they believed.
Just one question , so you acknowledged Jesus was killed "allegedly" because of blasphemy ?

This is pretty insane that part claims that he never claimed to be God, I feel like he should know better according to the source material.. the Sanhedrin literally tore their robes after he said he'd be at the right hand of the father and said what more do you need to hear, crucify him, they knew he was putting himself equal to the Father.
Exactly right - not to mention that this is direct reference to Daniel 7 in which this 'Son of Man' would be in the presence of the Ancient of Days (God) and that He would be worshipped by all nations and languages. Only God is worshipped, hence the Sanhedrin's reaction.
When discussing topics like this to a large audience proper Bible study is so important

Jesus did say He was God in the New Testament.
This guy is wrong.
The next step is to show you where Jesus says He is God.
These are found in the books of Matthew Mark Luke and John.
This first one Jesus clearly say He is God.
When Jesus was tempted of the devil He tells Him He is God.
Luke 4 And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,

Luke 2:7
And she (Mary) brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
John 1:1
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
There was a man sent from God, whose name was John (John the Baptist).
The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.
Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.
And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace. For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
Mark 1:3
The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
John (John the Baptist) did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.
And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.
And John was clothed with camel's hair, and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey;
And preached, saying, There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose.
I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.
And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan.
And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him:
And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
And immediately the spirit driveth him into the wilderness.
And he was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted of Satan; and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered unto him.

@@JCMcGee Luke and Paul were clearly grifters - if they were even real. Luke, who was most likely Greek, is known as the physician. Well, what medicine was he handing out? How was any medicine not ritual based? Why is it not common knowledge as to what he was handing out as medicine?
Luke said to trust doctors because their knowledge was given to them by God. Uh, how is that not proof he was grifting? And then, the Catholics, who push Luke more than anyone, created the 1st hospitals.
And why are those 2 the most pushed apostles when there are like 50 others? I mean, they didn't even run with Jesus, so why are they the most relevant? Makes no sense other than a grift.
Paul claiming to be blinded and healed is the easiest ailment to fake. And then, was his name Saul or Paul? If he is was so relevant, why any confusion?

I think its possible that explicitily saying Jesus was God in the early Synoptic gospels could have been too dangerous and that an oral tradition which said the more explicit things existed alongside written testimony. John is then called to write it explicitly later on

4:30 Didn't Pontius Pilate want to release Jesus, claiming that he found no blame in Him. He went further and offered the people 2 options of who to release, Jesus or Barabbas and the people all shouted to crucify Him? Also he, Pontius Pilate wrote a sign saying King of The Jews, in Hebrew, Greek and Latin so that all could see, and the Jewish authorities told him to remove it. It does not sound to me like Pilate wanted to kill Jesus. I might be mistaken though... so open for a conversation
In which gospel? If you watch the rest of the video you will find that he talked about Pontius Pilate and how the gospels progressively absolve him of the blame. Just a brief search seems to point to John.
You are absolutely correct. Jesus was no threat to Rome. Pilate and Herod sent him back and forth to each other because neither one had any idea what to do with him. It was the angry mob that caused his crucifixion.
If you watch the whole thing he actually speaks about it. And how Pilate becomes less and less guilty for the later sources. The idea being that the "civilized" greeks and romans actually writing the gospels (that were not jews) wanted to blame the uncivilized jews for the death of the son of God, and not the romans, remember that the early spread of christianity focused a lot in spreading to rome and their provinces, which included a lot of the letters in the new testament. Historically, there is no reason to believe Pilate will care at all about not killing jesus. the romans crucified people in the hundreds. They also spoke about some reasons to believe for why Jesus did see himself as the future king of the jews once god came and bring the apocalipse. And at the very least, some people believed he would be the king of the jews. Which gives plenty of reasons for Pilate to kill him.
I really recomend watching the whole thing, is very interesting.
@@InShadowsLinger missed that part, sorry XD, so what extra biblical sources or reasons does he give for saying that the Bible absolves him of blame, and what would their motive be for absolving him of it? To make the Jews look bad, but they were the very people to whom the disciples preached and tried to convert?
@@diegog1853 Mark 14:60-65, the accuse Jesus of blasphemy, and that in Jewish culture in Leviticus is punished by death. You are right it is interesting, and unfortunately I am guilty of not watching the whole thing through. My mistake on that part.
Why would Jesus have been crucified in an especially drawn out and brutal manner if he never claimed to be God?
If he were merely claiming to be messiah and causing a stir, surely he would have received the typical expedited form of crucifixion instead of being scourged and forced to carry his cross for long distances?
The written records show, Jesus was found guilty of death for claiming to the Son of GOD and Christ(Messiah)
That said, the sentence itself stemmed from the Mosaic Law, stating that anyone who lies in GOD's name shall be put to death - therefore concluding that Jesus was in-fact lying about His identity in GOD's name(YHWH), and was therefore worthy of death as a result.
@@smalltimer4370 they were baying for blood and wanted him dead. Pontius Pilate even tried to coax some mercy out of them.
There’re a lot of prophets killed in brutal manner , it’s not something new…
Well here is the thing, the jews even before the coming of christ were waiting for their promise from god of a "kingdom" for them, when jesus came to them claiming to be a prophet with all of the miracles and signs that proves it, and told them about the kingdom in heaven, well for the jews at that time it wasnt the most pleasant idea when they realized the promised kingdom was in heaven, as they had thought it was supposed to be a kingdom on earth, and the jews and their love for this life they rejected the man's message and claims, not because he was a prophet but because he wasnt the prophet THEY wanted...
but the jews didnt care about killing him because simply killing him wouldnt have helped them disproving his message which they didnt want, so they wanted to disprove his status of a prophet of god, now how do you do that? One of the laws of judaism is that whoever is crucified on a tree is deemed cursed in this world and hereafter, a prophet of god just simply cant be cursed so they schemed to crucify him and the rest is history, also if he was just claiming to be a god the jews couldve just killed him to prove he wasnt a one, since yk a god simply cant die, they didnt need all of this crucifixion, but to disprove someone's status as a prophet you needed something ever specific, which is the crucifixion, and since a prophet is still a human and they know he could die killing him wouldve made them lose their chance to curse him and disprove him and his message.
Correct me if i am wrong in any of what i say. At 9.12, Alex says Jesus sent the disciples in his name before his ascension. That's in John, but they are explicitly referring to the synoptics, so this doesn't make sense. Besides that, Jesus calls them to forgive others the same way he does on the sermon on the mount, so there isn't that same level of authority given to forgive sins, thus not giving them divine status.
In Matthew 26:64-66, as many people refer to, the priests tore their robes off at his blasphemy. I couldn't find any other meaning of blasphemy, both greek and english, that didn't refer to misuse of language when coming to God. The 1st century Sanhedrin knew exactly what that meant (he did not deny the title 'Son of God' rather He said they were right in saying this) and so accused him of this.
To refer to why he was killed, Bart I'm sure is right. His plaque by the cross read 'King of the Jews'. But the Jews who did not believe in Jesus twisted it to make it sound like He was claiming to be above Caesar, which resulted in death. The Jews still knew exactly what He claimed to be and wanted him dead for that, but couldn't charge him legally (again not 100% sure).
Finally, if Jesus was not God, his sacrifice means nothing for the forgivness of sins. If Jesus was a man highly inspired by God (yet still only a man), this means that there was a way to live free of sin. Jesus came because, as Paul said, "All have fallen short" and "the wages of sin is death". Therefore humans simply cannot live the life we are expected, but Jesus came - fully God and fully human - to live a perfect life we cannot attain, and produce a better covanent as Hebrews talks of. Thus before God we stand pure and clean because of Jesus' death and resurrection, and whoever would believe this may have eternal life.
I don’y understand why so many people think the argument of “Jesus never claimed he was God” holds any water or is effective at scrutinizing Christian claims. Jesus did not need to say to his followers “I am God, the Second Person of the Most Holy Trinity, eternally begotten by the Father” and have that quoted verbatim in the Gospels (which skeptics dismiss as unreliable sources anyways, so it wouldn’t matter even if that was recorded).
-Jesus does reference his divine identity across the Synoptics, and additionally claims the authority to do things that the Jews typically relegated to the authority of God.
-Jesus does not correct anyone who calls him God, nor those who treat him like he is God
-the demons in the Gospels recognize him as God (who, as preternatural creatures who know God but hate him, ought to know a thing or two)
-Anyone can claim to be God, just go to any psych ward. The difference is that Jesus shows his divinity through his actions before revealing his identity with words.
-the fact that the earliest Christian writers of the first and second centuries had to combat the heresies of Docetism (which claimed Jesus wasn’t human), attests historically to the fact that the disciples (people who knew Jesus and knew the people who knew him) and the first generations of Christians already believed de facto that Jesus was God and took that position for granted a priori.
"Jesus did not need to say to his followers... [I am God]"
If he didn't need to say it, then it's weird that the Christian church decided to explicitly claim, from the Nicene Creed onwards, that Jesus is God front and center making it well nigh impossible for anyone to misinterpret or misunderstand the claim.
Well if Jesus didn't need to say he was a god then you don't need to believe he was. I as a true follower of Jesus (peace be upon him) care very much about what he did and didn't say

If Jesus disciples knew that Jesus was real God.
Why they run away when Jesus cought, as in mark 14:50.
Seems they thought Jesus was only human being.
Thats so stupid, imagina im not claimed to be david and people keep saying im a guy named david. Whos crazy here me or the people lol
At around 4:10 Ehrman says Jesus claiming to be God wouldn't have got him killed. Then at around 14:44 he says Jesus would have been stoned to death for claiming to be God.
They would have stoned him if they were in control of the Holy Land, but they weren't. They needed Roman permission to carry out a death sentence, but Pilate wasn't interested in Jewish religious law. So the Jews stirred up the crowd, threatening an uprising. Pilate had him crucified out of political expediency/cowardice, not a violation of religious law.
No he says the Romans crucified him for sedition not for claiming to be God and that he would have been stoned by the Jews had he claimed to be God.
Jesus was most likely crucified for claiming he was the king or messiah(anointed king) of jews which is blasphemy in a way when the Romans were the king of jews and were the ones anointing the Supervisor supplanting the role of Yahweh.
Also crucifixion is about leaving the body to rot for numerous days and allowing insects and scavenging birds to eat the flesh. So Romans would not have allowed the removal of the body after death, so the 3 day resurrection is also a creation of Jews who had lost their power and faith in their own god in face of the Roman Empire.
@@OrichalcumHammer False. The majority of scholars agree that Jesus was in fact crucified, and taken down from the cross to be buried before the Sabbath. There were actually eyewitnesses that wrote about it. The Jewish leaders had Jesus crucified, so they didn't create the resurrection story. That's the last thing they would have wanted to happen. They hadn't lost faith in God, but had rejected the promised Messiah. You're just way off on the facts.

Roman accounts are very clear, some humans love their bodies and would not want body des3crated as they d ie and after they are d e-a- d . crucifixion serves the dual purpose of humil-ation for the person crucified and example for others. Hence bodies of almost everyone crucified was left as display for several days. Roman account and Egyptian accounts are factual real history.

And [beware the Day] when Allah will say, "O Jesus, Son of Mary, did you say to the people, 'Take me and my mother as deities besides Allah?'" He will say, "Exalted are You! It was not for me to say that to which I have no right. If I had said it, You would have known it. You know what is within myself, and I do not know what is within Yourself. Indeed, it is You who is Knower of the unseen. I said not to them except what You commanded me - to worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord. This is very interesting. Many thanks for this discussion. Does anyone know what’s Bart Ehrman’s view on Jesus’ use of the title Son of Man from the book of Daniel?

Then what was the blasphemy that would justify crucifixion?
Most people have heard “Jesus/God loves you”. Does that mean they have a relationship with God and will go to heaven? Depends on the individual. A relationship is 2 sided, you receive love and you give love back.
God showed His love by suffering, dying on the cross and rising from the dead for you, now you show Love back by repenting of your sins (lying, stealing, sexual sins, taking the Lord’s Name in vain etc) and believing in Jesus as your Lord and saviour so that Heaven is in your future not hell.

Luke 4 And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
2 Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered.
3 And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread.

And John was clothed with camel's hair, and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey;

I’d say Jesus never even claimed to be God in John. Although John does portray Jesus as being unique or divine in some way, he still never claimed to be God. And any verse where he’s mistaken claiming to be God is grossly mistranslated or misunderstood.
The issue at hand is sin and God’s nature of being just. Sin brings suffering (the pleasure is short term, and the suffering is long term-on earth and in hell forever). God brings Righteousness (may have short term suffering followed by long term pleasure- on earth and in Heaven).
If you love yourself repent of your sins (lying, hatred, unforgiveness, sexual sins, taking the Lord’s Name in vain, stealing, dishonouring your parents etc) & believe in Jesus for forgiveness of sins. (Jesus died on the Cross as a sacrifice and defeated death by rising from the dead)

Ehrman does think through this a lot (I didn't realize that the major instances of Jesus explicitly saying "I'm God" are all (or most) in John for example). However, there is one thing he talks about here that I don't agree with his logic: forgiving the paralytic's sins.
When Ehrman is explaining the story, at 8:42, he states that Jesus's enemies are the ones that point out "Only God can forgive sin." Ehrman and then Alex use this later when they bring up John 20:23 when Jesus says "if you forgive then they are forgiven." This story helps their point because they say that priests would say "your sins were forgiven" too, and they were not claiming to be God. Therefore, Jesus is only saying he has more authority than the Pharisees.
As it stands, I don't find anything wrong with that argument (I think it's pretty compelling actually). However, there is a detail in that story that both of them leave out: the Pharisees never said "Only God can forgive sin." If you look up the story in all the synoptic gospels (Matthew 9:1-8, Mark 2:1-12, and Luke 5:17-26), they all word this as not something the Pharisees were saying, but something that they were thinking internally. It's something we only know about because the gospels claim that Jesus knew their internal thoughts, and they don't record him telling the crowd what the Pharisees were thinking (Jesus not telling everything to the crowd isn't out of character for him either since the gospels are filled with stories of him explaining stuff to just the disciples after he preached, which leads me to conclude that this detail was something that Jesus explained afterwards to the disciples). If that was the line of thinking of his accusers that led him to do the miracle that shows his authority, I would expect Jesus to make some sort of correction to their logic if they were incorrect; which is absent in the story. If their thought was referring to authority given to priests as representatives of God himself forgiving sin, wouldn't a more direct thought be something along the lines of "doesn't this guy know only people given authority by God can forgive sin?" and not "doesn't this guy know only God himself can forgive sin." This dichotomy, just like with the famous "before Abraham was, I AM", story leads me to think that the Pharisees knew exactly what Jesus was trying to communicate when he told the man "Your sins are forgiven"; that he was in fact God himself, not only just someone with more authority than the Pharisees.
To sum it up, to conclude that that story is not Jesus making a claim to divinity is an interpretation that is not supported by the story itself (and, if I may add, Jesus's statement of giving the disciples authority is found in John, the book that Ehrman argues is not reliable to learn about Jesus; I only see room for doubt of the interpretation that its a story of Jesus's claim to divinity if you use that saying in John, but according to Ehrman, we can't use that book).
This is quite compelling, but couldn't one just say that the Pharisees were wrong about who could or couldn't forgive sins?
@@VictorMainaKinuthia That's certainly possible, but one would have to look elsewhere to make that claim that the Pharisees were wrong. If you were to use the rest of the Bible to make that claim, I would argue that the rest of it would support their thought, that only God can forgive sins. At least from the internal source of the religion itself, there is nothing to disprove their thought, but instead, agrees with their sentiment.
I'll even go one step further; lets go with the option that Matthew, Mark, and Luke were in fact made up; which means that that authors' are creating Jesus and using stories to describe who this made-up person was supposed to be. This still doesn't change what the most obvious (or at least what I argued above) interpretation would be; it's a story that claims his divinity. If they had free-reign to write whatever they wanted (because we are assuming it's a fictional story) and the point of the story was just to show that Jesus had more authority than the Pharisees without also being God, I would argue it would make more sense to write that the Pharisees' internal (or even something they said out-loud since that probably seems more believable if they were trying to create a lie, at least to me) thought was focused on their authority to forgive sins (or what kind of people were given that authority by God) rather God's authority itself. The fact that the story not only has Jesus not correct or challenge their belief that only God can forgive sins but that these writers would have decided to make that the statement that the Pharisees were thinking of in the first place still leads me to believe that their intention of the story was to show that Jesus was making a claim of divinity. Basically, I'm saying that if this was made up or not, the interpretation that aligns most with the story as it is written is a claim to divinity. (P.S. I know this wasn't necessarily what you were asking/saying, but your question got me thinking more, and I wanted to share)
@@jesusbrickfreaklego9388 You make a good point, but we can still support this claim using the content from the Bible. If we're taking Jesus' lack of correction as a metric, we need to remember that the same story is retold in Matthew 9. In verse 8, the crowd is recorded as saying that the authority to forgive sins has been given to human beings.
"When the crowds saw it, they were filled with awe, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to human beings." Matthew 9:8 (NRSVUE)
By your logic, Jesus' lack of correction for the crowd implies that God isn't the only one who can forgive sins, but He has also granted that authority to mankind including "The Son of Man".
Ehrman contradicts himself left, right and centre. Only chooses those parts of the New Testament which he thinks support his views and dismisses the rest, conveniently.
I would argue that there's an important difference between being divine (in the sense of being above man) and being the same entity essentially as God
That's exactly what some early Christian sects believed, they believed pretty much what Muslims believe that he was a Messiah and Prophet but never claimed to be divine
Its only later and the mainstream Christian sects that force their interpretation onto the words of the Bible.

I’m new to this channel, so I don’t know where else it’s been discussed, but there’s an interesting discussion here about words that mean God, are related to God, or have been interpreted as meaning God. Where can I find your thoughts on ‘Son of Man’ - 'Ben Adam' - how it’s interpreted by scholars now, what it means in modern Hebrew, and what the equivalent term may have meant in first century Aramaic?
Ben Adam means Son of Adam the first man created so Jesus is not part of that so is not the Son of Adam that's the miracle of his creation but his creation was just like Adam and everything and everyone else with the word Be and it's, the problem some people have is they take the scriptures literally like God created the world in 6 days and created Adam from clay, people ignore reality within themselves they don't know that the body is part of them it's not them in reality, the body is like a machine someone uses to get by it can come in perfect order or damaged but still function also it can get damaged and mended
"Son of Man" comes from Daniel 7:13-14 and refers to God coming to earth as a man. And we read in Mark 14:61-64 English Standard Version >> 61 But he remained silent and made no answer. Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?” 62 And Jesus said, “I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.” 63 And the high priest tore his garments and said, “What further witnesses do we need? 64 You have heard his blasphemy. What is your decision?” And they all condemned him as deserving death.
@@johnzuma4688 It's so strange you can't see what you are saying, First there was no priest at that time, second you said the Son of the Blessed, Who do you mean by the Blessed? Are you saying someone Blessed God? How does he see the son of man seated? who's the man? Are you saying God is a man? How they condemned God to death? can God die? the Jew at that time and still now associates the Messiah with the king of the Jews, the anointed one, it has nothing to do with the son of God
They say people who live in glass houses should not throw stones,
In Arabic there is a term called “bani Adam” or “son of Adam” which refers to humanity since both Muslims and Christian’s believe that we are descendant so of Adam peace be upon him. So yeah if someone is referred to as son of Adam or man then they are human

11:37 I’m surprised Mr Ehrman has never pointed out that “I am” doesn’t work in Hebrew or Aramaic, only Greek and very few people in the Galilee spoke Greek
the romans spoke Greek because Greek was the lingua franca of the roman empire supposedly but nothing can be known of the past. There is simply no way of knowing who spoke what when and where nor how many. You may guess and believe but not know - directly immediately personally experience anything about the past, because the past cannot be verified.
What is called history is and can only possibly be, belief, supposition or guesswork because the past cannot be directly immediate personally experienced or known, and that only leaves belief.
@@vhawk1951kl thanks for your comment. I disagree that history is simply belief. What I quoted is directly from a well known and respected historian. The not working part is a fact, the Tetragrammaton does not mean I am. Neither Hebrew nor Aramaic have a present tense being verb. I agree with Mr Ehrman though, Jesus never said it. It was added in Greek to his sayings much later. John’s writing is circa 100 CE
@@theunapologeticjew Belief is belief is belief whether it is is the belief of an historian or your or my belief or shit is shit and there is no non-shit shit, or slightly less shitty shit. There is simply no way of knowing what language whoever is being called Jesus spoke.
Almost everything about whoever he was is third fourth fifth etc hearsay, and self evidently if Christianity was ever a living tradition it has now died out as such, or if I am wrong about that, it is being kept a very closely guarded secret.
It occurs to me that what matters is whatever it was that he taught, not the language in which he taught, about which I have to confess I am more than a little hazy, but I would bet he tried to avoid the god word for obvious reasons.
Almighty God said: Ehyeh asher ehyeh (Hebrew); ho on (in Greek).

@@forgivenessseeker2023 my Greek is not so good. So you are saying that even in Greek there is a difference between the verbs? Would not have Greek speakers known this? Why is the “I am” utterance in John taken as gospel then?

In Acts 1:7 Jesus said “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority". 18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

Luke 4 And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
2 Being forty days tempted of the devil.
8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;
9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.
10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.
Jesus did say many times He is God.
He also PROVED He was God by doing:
miracles to prove He was God.
Healing all sicknesses and diseases
Raising the dead
Walking on water
Controlling the wind and the sea
Turn water into wine
Casting out demons
Talking about the future what would happen
He multiplied a few fish and a few loaves of bread to feed thousands more thanks once
Telling people about their hidden past
Forgiving sins
While Jesus was alive people around Him addressed Jesus as Lord
Jesus talked about heaven and the kingdom of heaven, hell, sin, the commandments, repentance
Rising from the dead after three days
And John was clothed with camel's hair, and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey;

The event you're referring to is recorded in the Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 26:65, in the New Testament of the Bible. The Jewish leader who tore his clothes in response to Jesus's claim, which he deemed blasphemous, was the high priest named Caiaphas.
During Jesus's trial before the Sanhedrin, the Jewish council, Jesus indirectly affirmed the high priest’s question about whether He was the Messiah, the Son of God. In response to Jesus’s affirmation, Caiaphas tore his robes and accused Jesus of blasphemy, which under Jewish law was a crime punishable by death. However, because the Jewish leadership did not have the authority to execute someone under Roman rule, they brought Jesus to the Roman governor, Pontius Pilate, accusing him of claiming to be "King of the Jews" and thus challenging Roman authority.
This pivotal moment led to Jesus’s crucifixion, a cornerstone event for Christian faith, symbolizing the ultimate sacrifice for the sins of humanity. The accusation and subsequent handover to the Romans underscore the complex interplay of religious and political tensions present in Jesus’s time.
The issue at hand is sin and God’s nature of being just. Sin brings suffering (the pleasure is short term, and the suffering is long term-on earth and in hell forever). God brings Righteousness (may have short term suffering followed by long term pleasure- on earth and in Heaven).

One of the issues with Christianity is events were interpreted by subsequent humans, like Paul or the gospel writers, and we have way of knowing if they got it right. They did not know Jesus, they did not witness his ministry.
Paul knew the apostles and met them in Jerusalem, Luke was a student of Paul, Mark was a follower of Jesus and Matthew was one of the original 12 apostles. Many knew him and plenty witnessed his ministry

@@Arexion5293 I'm not sure I spoke about "Son of God" in my article but "Son of Man". Please, read my article well.
@@hubertagamasu6283 Son of Man is irrelevant to the claim of being a god. It is not a title with such a meaning back when these oral traditions existed. So only "Son of God" would be somewhat related, but even that is more of a role bestowed upon an earthly representative of god like King David was once.
The son of man is also the lord of Sabbath - It's from the Gospel of John. He was indirectly saying he is God in this verse.
Amen
I'm not sure that John mentions Jesus as the Son of God any more than the others really.
Jesus didn't say he was God alone, he said he was the Son of God who was sent by the Father. He said the Father handed all judgement to him. So essentially for me, believing in Jesus is trusting that in fact he was sent by the Father and that the Father has handed all judgement over to the Son (Jesus). Jesus specifically says the Father is greater than him, and also says something like "the messenger is not greater than the one who sends him". He sort of continues on this idea a little saying the disciple is not greater than his teacher, which basically means that if Jesus the teacher was persecuted, hated, etc., for his testimony, then certainly those who fall under the tutelage of Jesus are no greater than Jesus himself, and will be persecuted, hated, etc., for their testimony. But isn't it in Matthew, now I just looked this up, where it says "Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us."
And this is after saying that the son was of the Holy Ghost, which is of God, because the Holy Ghost is also God as Jesus is God, as Jesus and God are one, and Jesus is seated at the right hand of the Father.
This seems like he wanted an opinion on this subject, so just choose an opinion that he thought would sound nice, without really doing thorough research. I'm not gonna judge, I'm really not going to because the bible came to me very slowly myself.
But right at the start of Matthew it says the child is of the Holy Ghost, which is the same thing as saying the Son of God. And also it says what I already quoted, which is Matthew 1:23

The fact that Jesus Christ is Yahweh can be seen when we compare the following Old Testament verses with the corresponding New Testament verses.
Isaiah 40:3 speaks about preparing the way for the LORD (Yahweh). When we compare this verse with Mark 1:3 we see that Jesus is the LORD who had the way prepared for him by John the Baptist.
In Joel 2:32a it says that whoever calls upon the Name of the LORD (Yahweh) will be saved. This verse is quoted by Peter in Acts 2:21, and by Paul in Romans 10:13. Both apostles are referring to Jesus as the LORD in these verses.
In Isaiah 6:1-10 we read about the marvellous vision that Isaiah had revealing the glory of the LORD (Yahweh). John tells us in John 12:40-41 that this vision revealed the glory of Jesus.
In Isaiah 44:6, the LORD (Yahweh) refers to himself as “the First and the Last”. In Revelation 1:8 and 17, Jesus similarly refers to himself as “the Alpha and the Omega” and “the First and the Last”.
In Zechariah 12:10 the LORD (Yahweh) speaks and says, “they will look on Me whom they have pierced.”[4] This is Jesus speaking (Psa. 22:16; John 19:34). This verse from Zechariah appears again in Revelation 1:7b and is about Jesus Christ.
As Yahweh (along with the Father and the Holy Spirit) Jesus is eternal, having all the qualities and attributes of God. Even on earth, in human form, Jesus was the image of the invisible God, and the exact representation of God’s nature (Col. 1:15; Heb. 1:3). Jesus is not some sort of demigod; rather, the fullness of deity (“God-ness”) dwells in him in bodily form (Col. 2:9). Jesus Christ, born of the virgin Mary, was fully man and fully God, having both a human and divine nature at the same time.
As eternal God, Jesus Christ existed before he came to earth as a human baby. He existed before the creation of the earth. In fact, Jesus was instrumental in its creation. The Bible says that all things were created by Him, and that nothing was made without Him (John 1:1-3; Col. 1:16-17; Heb. 1:2). Jesus is not a created being himself.
The Scriptures teach us that there is only one God and we are commanded that we should worship no other gods (Exod. 20:3). From Scripture we can see that Jesus Christ is worshipped eternally, further proving his deity and place in the Godhead (Phil. 2:10-11; Rev. 5:9-14).

Jesus accepts worship as God in Matthew 14:33 and Matthew 28:9. If Jesus does not think He is God then why would he accept worship as God? In other passages when people try to worship any of His followers the act of worship is rejected.
From the very first words of Mark's gospel, Jesus is portrayed as God. Mark, which Ehrman accepts is likely the earliest Gospel, appropriates verses from 2 Old Testament prophets which referred to God/Yahweh and applies them directly to Jesus. Funny that.
@PC-vg8vn Just to reiterate Ehrman’s point in reply to your comment here that “Jesus is portrayed as God” is definitely not the same thing as “Jesus claimed to be God” because in the gospel according to Mark or any of the synoptic gospels, Jesus never does. Alluding to or implying that another person is God is not the same as that person claiming to be God. Even in the gospel according to John where Jesus makes allusions to his being divine he also states in John 10 that “those listening to him are gods “elohim”. So, one could deduce or argue from his statement here is that what Jesus thought or claimed about himself was also true of those around him. 🤔

'Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”
“I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”
The high priest tore his clothes. “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?” (Mark 14:61-64)
I'm sure Bart Ehrman knows these verses from Mark's gospel (which he acknowledges is probably the earliest gospel).
What is Jesus saying here? Here's using the self-designation he most often uses for himself and taking it right back to where it comes from - Daniel 7:13-14. The one who (remarkably in the Jewish Scriptures) is described as 'like a son of man' and yet comes as God does (on the clouds of heavens), to whom God gives authority and glory (and God does not give his glory "to another") and who is worshipped (despite God being the only one who is to be worshipped). And Jesus before the high priest not only admits to being 'the Son of the Blessed One' but takes up the language of Daniel which speaks of him being worshipped alongside God. What's the high priest's response? - 'You have heard the blasphemy.' The High Priest understands exactly the claim that Jesus is making - and denounces it as blasphemy. It's a claim to divinity and that's exactly how it's understood by the listeners. (And it's there in very similar terms in both Matthew and Luke - with the same reaction from the Jewish leaders). Now, Bart Erhman IS right that the charge that Pontius Pilate is considering it that Jesus is the King of the Jews. It's there in all three synoptics but made most explicit in Luke - who records what the Jews say when they take Jesus to Pilate: "We have found this man subverting our nation. He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar and claims to be Messiah, a king." (LUke 23:2). Why's that? Because Pilate won't care about their Jewish scruples about blasphemy, but he will care if someone is setting himself up as a king in opposition to Caesar - that's what will get you killed under a Roman governor (and the Jews know it!). That's why the Jews play the system and change the charge from blasphemy to sedition. That's what will get you crucified.
Actually, Bart Ehrman is wrong again saying that Pilate kills him for claiming to be king of the Jews (though he is right in saying that's a political claim). PIlate can see through it all - all four gospels tell us the same thing: that Pilate can see Jesus' innocence and doesn't consider him guilty of any crime. He knows the Jews have handed Jesus over because of envy, but eventually caves in to the crowd. (It may well be that his own political situation was precarious at this time due to the political situation in Rome with his supporter Sejanus having recently fallen out of favour with Tiberius - and he therefore wanted to avoid open conflict with the Jews.).
So it was precisely Jesus' claim to be God that got him killed. Bart also doesn't really seem to have fully addressed the fact that in Mark 2 the religious leaders DO clearly see Jesus' claims as blasphemous - and Jesus doesn't tell them, 'no, no - I wasn't really claiming to be God there' Just the opposite in fact. Oh, and Mark also tells us in the same narrative, "Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts." And what would Mark, a good Jew, know? "Yahweh knows the thoughts of man." (Psalm 94:11) Oh, and a couple of chapters later, Mark records Jesus calming a storm with his words. And his disciples (in the boat with him at the time): "They were terrified and asked each other, 'Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!" (4:41) - Actually, they know who stills storms - Yahweh again (Psalm 107:29). I could go on (has power over death, calls himself Lord of the Sabbath, creates matter, is called 'my Son' by a voice from heaven, calls himself the son of the vineyard owner (ie God) - and this is all in Mark's gospel, not John's).

The idea that Mark's gospel (as the earliest) didn't really claim that Jesus was God and that these were legends or embellishments that somehow suddenly evolved in the small number of decades before the gospel of John (with its more overt claims to divinity) seems sligtly ridiculous when you consider that Mark's gospel points to Jesus being the son of God... in the first verse. I suppose that Prof Ehrman will claim that's really not a claim to divinity, but it's funny that the religious leaders of Jesus' day seemed to know with great clarity that Jesus was making claims to divinity... in the second chapter of Mark. And then just a couple of chapters on, Jesus is demonstrating the sort of power over nature that the Jewish Scriptures spoke of as being the power that was wielded by God himself. (I could go on...!!)
Why doesn't the mainstream ever talk about the ancient text, the ones written in clay , the ones that have stories, stories similar to the bible, the ones 2000 years and older before the time of Jesus that recount similar stories, that are apparent were just copied through the ages and eventually ended up in the bible with their own twist?
People often say, “I’m not hurting anyone so it’s ok to sin (lying, stealing, sexual sins, disrespecting parents etc)” The same God who said to love your neighbour first said to love Him to the best of your ability. If you carry on sinning, then you do not love God but are selfish like the devil so you will be joined to your father in hell or repent of your sins and believe in Jesus as God so Jesus adopts you as His child and you will join Him in Heaven forever.
I think Bart mixed up the point about 'your sins are forgiven'. Jesus actually meant it's easier and more commonly seen for healers to say get up and walk. But to show them that he has authority to forgive sins that's why he said your sins are forgiven
A most excellent observation!
One other aspect of this, is that many people are under the impression that Jesus was acting on His own rather than His Father who sent Him, as we read, He sent-out His apostles to forgive the sins of others, as He Himself was sent.

Claim: "The God of the Bible"
Evidence: The Bible saying "trust me" (The same Bible that assumes it's moral to buy slaves, enslave children, pass slaves on as inheritance & beat the slaves as long as they don't die.) 🤣🤣
@@p.f.luxenberg3881 It takes gullibility to consider sacred the claim that an invisible man gave birth to himself via virgin birth to sacrifice & resurrect himself to forgive a petty fruit eating mishap in order to save you from a hell & give you heavenly eternal life. It takes motivated arrogance & ignorance to believe the burden of disproving the claim is on those who are not gullible.
Ehrman's right that only the Gospel of John has Jesus claiming himself to be God, but the other sources do have him claiming some divinity (though not on full equality with God). Jesus notes himself as the "Son of God", which is either taken literally (as with most Christians) or taken just as a symbol of praise. If we accept the second thesis, then Peter, Mark, and Matthew should also be called "Sons of God", but obviously the title's meaning for Jesus is distinguished from the title's meaning for anyone else.
Jesus explicitly claims Godhood in John, but claims some loosely-construed form of divinity in the other Gospels while even submitting to God in the personhood of the Father. Since Christians are not polytheists and affirm the existence of only one God, there cannot be some "lesser" form of divinity in Christian doctrine but only a single divinity, so it makes sense to simply state Jesus was "God", which Paul elaborates on in Philippians 2:6.
The understanding of Jesus as completely equal to the Father is a misrepresentation of Trinitarian dogma. Trinitarians believe that Jesus had divinity, the Father had divinity, and the Holy Spirit had divinity. There only exists one divinity since God is one, so Jesus' divinity is equal to the Father's divinity. Yet Jesus still submits himself to the Father on basis of his human nature, so Jesus is also subordinate to the Father. Trinitarians don't claim to know how specifically this subordination happens, but it's logical to call Jesus God if he claims any form of divinity at all, even if it isn't direct Godhood, otherwise Trinitarians would be polytheistic.
Read the epistles. Php. 2; Titus. Etc. Jesus before the Sanhedrin in the gospels. Mk. 2 - Being Lord of the Sabbath. Lk. 7 - forgiving sins. (The reaction of those present - who can forgive sins except God).
Try to understand that Jesus was accused of claiming to be God which His accussers said is blasphemy.
They, in His time, understood what He was saying. Why don't you ❓
Since the original of bible is not English, it is quite possible that “son” and “father” were incorrect translations.
@@osman7900 If I recall correctly, terms like "Son of Man" are best understood in their meaning when cross-referenced with other parts of the Bible, specifically, the Old Testament, which talk about these terms in a bit more detail. It does not simply imply prophethood or being the messiah, it implies something deeper in the Old Testament.
@@ArthurWuYeah211 even within the Old Testament, the word that is translated as “son” may actually have different meanings in different contexts. In addition, considering that the original languages of the Old Testament and the New Testament are different, I am not sure how reliable cross-referencing those terms can be. I am kind of pre-opinionated regarding this issue. No offence intended.
@@osman7900 No worries about offence, we are all trying to reach the truth in the best way we can. Thanks for the conversation.
While the languages used was different (Hebrew vs Aramaic and Koine Greek), the authors of the New Testament were intentional about cross-referencing what they referred to as the scriptures in their revelations. So even though there is a language barrier, in my view it is reasonable to assume that cross-references mean a similar thing.
In the 4 " Gospels" ( ie 4 biographies of Jesus) which of course are translations anyway, I did not and do not find Jesus saying he was God.
Connor enjoyed this discussion more.
The other option is that even if he did say " I am the way the life and the truth", this could be the equivalent of Al-Hallaj the Sufi saying " Ana Al-Haqq", in other words he perceived himself to be in communion with God. Similar comments have been made throughout Christian history as can be shown from quotations from Evelyn Underhill's classic work on mysticism. Incidentally, this was Florence Nightingale's understanding of such verses.
Very strong point. Thank you
