We go all out with the outside Christmas decorations in the U.S. In fact, one of the most popular traditions for many families here is to drive around neighborhoods and look at all the lights and decorations at night.
I know this is old, but if I'm watching it just now that means anyone can be watching it just now, so here's a fun fact: When kevin puts the spider on marv's face, it was a real spider, so daniel stern couldn't scream because the spider might be startled and bite him, so he had to pretend to scream and then add the scream in post.
This is my favorite Christmas movie. I grew up with it playing on TV, so it's very nostalgic. I watch it every year. The sound of Marv as he falls down the icy stairs to the basement might be one of the funniest sounds ever to me, plus his spider-scream of course. I also listen to the soundtrack because it IS really good. Also, I only recently noticed that the house itself is already decorated in Christmas colors (green carpeting, red wallpaper, etc) so it's like a subliminally festive looking film.
Another amazing John Williams score! You've gotta do "E.T.", too. :) Fun fact (from "The Movies That Made Us"): The producers of this movie were like "we should ask John Williams to do the score haha yeah right". They ended up asking him almost as a joke expecting no response. And he said yes.

Great to see you enjoy this so much. Now you know why so many of us love this movie as a tradition. I work in retail sales so the holidays are crazy busy, and hard to keep the spirit. My top holiday movie is A Christmas Story -1983. If you haven't seen that, hope you find time watch it. I always enjoy seeing it this time of year.
Marijchu: How can you leave a kid behind. Even with that many kids you have tricks... (talking through the pivotal scene that answers the question, where the neighbors kid is accidentally included in the head count)
Fun fact: John Candy, the guy who offers the mom a ride, says, "Our flight was cancelled, so we have to drive. We'll give you a ride." This is a reference to Candy's earlier movie: Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, which came out 3 years earlier. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planes,_Trains_and_Automobiles The writer of both movies, John Hughes, was prolific, and a ton of the big movies from the '80s and '90s were either him as director, him as writer, or him involved in some other way: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Hughes_(filmmaker)#Filmography I mean, check out that list: National Lampoon's Vacation, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Uncle Buck, Dennis the Menace. So if you ever hear an actor get asked about who their inspiration is, and they answer with "Hughes", this is the guy they're talking about. He shaped modern American film.
This inspired my love for Mac n' Cheese, Pizza and BB Guns as a child. We literally attempted many of these things, much to our parents horror. Even filled a Super Soaker with gas and turned it into a flame thrower. It was amazing for about 2 minutes until it melted...The greatest crime committed in this movie is that Kevin, didn't even get to eat his Kraft Macaroni and Cheese dinner.

In America, a lot of people dress up their house both inside and outside. Many just after Thanksgiving and leave them up until New Years. Probably 50 percent of homes are decorated
As far as the decorations go, I'll send you some pics of my neighborhood on my way home tonight after work. Midwest America is sickeningly wholesome...lol
It was pretty lit down my Street this year. Not every single house but pretty much everyone had lights. Co vid seems to make everyone a little more festive at Christmas with lightning. Northwestern Canada here.
That house is still there in that neighborhood, but they've had to erect barrier fencing around the entire perimeter to keep snoops from randomly wandering onto the property or breaking in like the wet bandits.
Regarding the scream, that was put in after the fact as Daniel Stern (the actor) has to mime the scream so as to not get bitten by the tarantula or have it run off uncontrollably.
Sorta, true. I saw an interview with Daniel Stern, and he was actually afraid of alarming the spider when it was on his face, but the animal wrangler told him "Thats not really a problem because spiders don't have ears, so you should be fine."
In America, most churches just put up a general “manger” scene, with baby Jesus already there. The Christmas Eve church service usually has the story of the birth of Jesus. Again, different branches of Christianity have different kinds of Christmas services here, I’m just describing what I grew up around in Texas.
Yeah, adding the baby on Christmas sounds like a cool idea but I've never heard of it before, it's just not a u.s. thing I guess. And I've lived all over the u.s. - north, south, east, west, and middle.
I was raised Catholic (also in Texas!), and in the Catholic Church, the baby Jesus usually is not placed in the nativity scene until Christmas Day. If you attended Midnight Mass, you would get to see the priest carry the baby Jesus into the church and place him in the manger.
Classic Christmas Movie. So glad you enjoyed it especially during this pandemic times. Enjoying your reaction. Hope you get to watch the HA2. Merry Christmas and have a wonderful new year. Hello from Australia.
One of the best movie screams in film history! And that was a REAL tarantula on his face!! Stepping on a nail on the staircase made me cringe a lot in A Quiet Place. Not so much in Home Alone
Every movie reacter says this, makes the same mistake "This family has too many kids" It's two families, they say in the beginning that the Uncle is there with his kids as well
Just checked wikipedia. Kevin has four other siblings. Anyone who chooses to have five kids and has something like this happen got nobody to blame but themselves.
May be you don't know it, but the cop that appears at the beginning also plays on the 'Lethal Weapon' movies. Kevin couldn't repair the shelves in his brother's room
Crazy thing was there was an earlier French film called "3615 Code Père Noël" that had a similar premise but it was a slasher film. The kid was defending his home from a psycho in a Santa suit.
My Mom had a slightly similar situation as Kevin's Mom. We went on a river jungle ride at Disney land and she realized we had left a 4 year old behind. Security had him and it was fine. There are ten of us kids and there was probably 3-4 times someone got left behind.
I just picked up years later, that no matter Mckalisters called police and tried to travel back with travel company. And they did tried calling neighbors. They NEVER tried to actually call home and check on Kevin. You would thought that would be first thing to do when you realize that your kid stayed at home. Yet they NEVER tried to call phone home.
Fast fact, in another marriage, and under a different name, the mother also had another child named "Lydia Deetz". But apparently after a failed art career, and scandal involving her daughter being engaged to a ghost, she left the family and became a part of the McCallister family. Sadly, after several years with this family and losing her son twice, she became a ragdoll of her former self, and began hanging around a thin and tall guy named "Jack", where she helped in a kidnapping/Santa-napping plot. Despite her part in the crime, she became involved in law, and became a judge, until a 'A Series of Unfortunate Events', when she tried to marry a 14 year old girl to a 42 year old guy. Last I heard, in 2021 her status had been changed io "Extinct".
You need to see ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’. It’s, old, it’s b&w but it’s a classic and everyone needs to see it. I’ve watched it 3 times in the past week.... Timeless
A few facts about this film: The house was the same as the house in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. The movie Kevin watched on tv was a movie they filmed just for Home Alone.
I remember traveling overseas on Christmas Eve the year before this movie came out and we experienced delays because of airline overbooking. Not sure about these days (pandemic excluding) but back then traveling during the holidays was definitely always jampacked, at least here in the US. People are rarely where they want/need to be by Christmas Eve, and poor planning is only part of the reason. People also have scheduling constraints (due to work, due to needing to coordinate with multiple other loved ones with different availability, due to school), budget constraints, constraints due to sudden changes or emergencies.
Maybe it's regional, but the airports were usually swamped during the last few days of the holiday season. Too many people wait until the last minute before making their travel plans. As someone who works in retail, I can also say it's the same with shopping. "How dare you be out of this thing I want because I waited until 7 PM on Christmas Eve before trying to buy it!? Where is your manager!? I want the corporate office's number!"
1:43 Almost Evesham house on my street has done kind of lights or something on their house. Some more than others. Mine just has some strong lights up in the window and a few decorative things on the porch.
Interestingly I learned about the differences in celebrating Christmas in elementary school. We had our first English lessons at the age of nine or ten, apparently. And during Christmas time that year we basically still learned the numbers to 25 while also having stuff about Christmas in the lessons. Most people in Germany celebrate Christmas late in the afternoon or evening of Christmas Eve. British and American families usually celebrate in the morning of Christmas Day. And by celebrating I mean unwrap their presents ;)
Oh and about screaming Marv: AFAIK it is Daniel Stern but he did not do it while lying on the floor. He had to do the scream in post since it would have scared the spider. Yes, read that right.
It just occurde to me when you commented on his clothes several times that he has clothes for each and every occasion... did the family also forget his bag or did indeed nobody end up packing with/for Kevin? Guess I have to rewatch it. But it's still on the list of movies I present my boyfriend each and every day for the last few weeks. Other movies on the list be The Polarexpress, The Muppet Christmas Carol (just cute) or the (other) Disney version with Scrroge McDuck as Ebeneezer Scrooge (since he is usually named different in other countries - Dagobert Duck in German e.g. - it is initially odd that the story fits so well... until you realize that Scrooge is modeled after Scrooge...), Miracle on 34th street, NAtivity Story, Die Hard...
Well done again kid just keep being you. Fav Christmas movie is one that's not as well known. It was a coproduction between Jim Henson and the Canadian broadcasting corporation, with original music by Paul Williams., it ran originally on the CBC for about three years next showed up on the short lived RCA videodisc system, spotty distribution for years. Emmet Otters Jug Band Christmas. Introduced by Kermit with some wonderful original music, old school wholesome family Christmas entertainment. and no I dont own shares lol. Merry Christmas and best of the season Mari

True fact: around the same age as Kevin, and maybe even inspired by it, I sledded down a hill in which we'd set up a ramp at the bottom. I did indeed bust my tailbone, and it was incredibly painful for a solid week.
Actually, John Candy *_could_* play the clarinet. He did it in a lot of SCTV skits. In fact, Catherine O'Hara was a fellow SCTV alumni and worked together for years back in the 80s.
That blocking the sink thing reminds me of a couple who were friends of mine...I was around when they got together, then I moved a few times and we lost touch for various reasons...then about 15 years later, I ran into a mutual friend, who told me that when the couple split up, rather than than let her have the house or sharing the proceeds, he blocked all the bath and sink holes with concrete , turned the taps on and left, totally flooding the house..! Been back in contact with her for 5 years but have never let on I know what happened..!
Baby in the crib mostly various from family to family and church to church. I grew up with baby in crib, wife not in crib. Now we do not in crib because it's nice. It makes you take a moment in the midst of the Christmas chaos to officially acknowledge the birth.

The last moment of the suspension of disbelief is that the police were there the night before to arrest the Wet Bandits and then left an eight year old in the house alone.
That's interesting. I've never heard of a tradition of not putting baby Jesus on the manger until Christmas. Here in the states, it seems like he's put out when the rest of the nativity is... By the way, on Netflix there's a series called "The Movies That Made Us" that has a great episode about this film
I know most home Nativity Scenes have the baby Jesus in the manger. However, the Nativity in the Catholic Church places the Baby in the manger at Christmas Eve mass.
Joe Pesci intentially was cold and rude to Culkin while they were filming. That way he had a more genuine reaction and scared of him while filming. Genious work...

National Lampoon Christmas Vacation is my favourite.
Other Christmas films:
"A Christmas Story"
"Miracle on 34th Street"
"It's a Wonderful Life"
Love this woman....great reaction
"Don't scream. Don't Scream... you're gonna go to hell!" Bwahahahahahaah!!!!
the psycho movie gangster is the best, I always think that shit is so funny, what a legend!
In America, we put the whole nativity up when we put it up. We don’t wait on Christmas Day or Eve to put Jesus in there.
Usually the day after Thanksgiving is when decorations start going up.
@@3DJapan shit, the stores were putting up Christmas displays in August. It’s Goddamn criminal, it ought to be illegal to try and trick people into thinking Christmas is around the corner in a cynical and disgusting display of profit over sense.
19:18 impressive prelude to 19:26
The real Christmas miracle is that Harry and Marv are somehow still alive after this.
You are very delightful to watch!!
Packing luggage must be he's kryptonite or something because everything else he did in the movie he did effortlessly.
You are so pretty and I love your accent! 🙂❤
18:14 The realization hit you harder than the iron hit Marv, lol.
She doesn't have a lot of kids, those are nephews and nieces. The neighbor kid was miscounted as Kevin due to being in the van when they were counting and wearing an outfit that looks like Kevins.
Wow I love your reactions. This was a great one. I love the holidays and I love Christmas movies. I can’t wait to see what new ones you do this year. Do Scrooged please! (I mean if you haven’t seen it.)
For person like me which watched this movie many times it's interesting to watch your reaction :D
In fact, Catherine O'Hara was a fellow SCTV alumni and worked together for years back in the 80s.
i love the theory that John Candy is the devil and her mom sold her soul to get to Kevin
Yep, John Williams composed the music in this now classic movie.
My favourite Christmas film is "Ernest Saves Christmas"
Jim Varney was a treasure. Know whaddimean?
Trading Places is a classic
I'm a new subscriber to your channel and I really enjoy watching your reactions to all these movies that I've seen multiple times but you're watching for the first time. It really brings new life into these movies for me. I REALLY enjoyed watching you react to all the Star Wars movies. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!
Great reaction
8:40 nailed it🤣
I know most home Nativity Scenes have the baby Jesus in the manger. However, the Nativity in the Catholic Church places the Baby in the manger at Christmas Eve mass.
I also hate saying the "like and subscribe" part. I always forget to say at least part of it. 😂
Such a good movie, watched it tonight too get in the Christmas spirit. Love it
Mari, Christmas to you and your family!
This movie is from back in my day!!!!!
Silver tuna!. It means its the best one
this year you should watch jingle all the way for the holidays :O
Joe Pesci intentially was cold and rude to Culkin while they were filming. That way he had a more genuine reaction and scared of him while filming. Genious work...
