- The 5G version of Microsoft's Surface Pro 9 is a handsome hybrid tablet PC, but its custom ARM processor severely limits its performance and app compatibility. It’s far more usable than any previous ARM Surface, but that’s not worth paying a premium over the faster Intel model.

I still use a Surface Pro-X SQ1 edition for a backup work laptop when I'm away from my main laptop. It works just fine and gets respectable battery life. I don't understand why reviewers are so compelled to go on about gaming on these things. I wouldn't even consider it since they were not built for gaming but for getting work done.
Who will play PC games on surface pro? The temperature is killing the device. Intel Surface pro cooling system can't handle that.
the reviewers, including this one, just install chrome and complain that it's slow lol. Pretty low effort reviews. WindowsCentral does a much better job because they actually invest the 2 minutes it takes to find an arm64 alternative to chrome.

@@HotelUser67 about Chrome and "slow" I agree, I have a Surface Go 3 with a tiny Pentium Gold now. Before a Atom win tablet and for this I can't complain. In synthetic benchmarks this 4W cpu with 2 cores/4threads is almost on the same level as that 10y old PCs of mine with it's 4 core 65W CPU. And that PC is still fine for Browser and Office work. But I also use Firefox, the slow one and do not see the "slow", it's saves massive RAM compared to Chrome ;) The ARM APU/GPU is probably much better than the Pentium Gold/Atom, but just office and consuming media both work fine. I personally prefere the x86 because of software support, at least for now and it's already fast enough for browsing, even office work is fine for a lot of tasks...
@Grant Russell I have my Steam Deck for that now, of course not everything works perfectly with it... but a lot does and it's even good for AA+ ;)
I moved from a Surface Pro 4 to Pro X SQ1 and never looked back. If you only run Arm compiled apps, the experience is excellent and FAST. There is no need you need to run emulated apps like chrome when ARM Edge exists. I hate that all you reviewers are reviewing these trying to run X86 and X64 emulated apps and then trashing performance. NO KIDDING! If you are a "Real" user of the device, you will be completely satisfied with performance.
I have the same type of feeling, I moved to Pro X SQ2 and OMG edge works like magic, office apps also
I am using a sq1 8gb ram version. I love it. It does everything I need.
Ive bought a really cheap Pro X on ebay for $250 and i upgraded the ssd to a 512 gb one. And i agree i love it. I decided to not use chrome cuz i did notice slow down but Edge works wondeefully. Ive been curious about getting a pro 9 sq3 because i wanna use the 5g since i take it out a lot
YUP I gave this review a thumbs Down. They review the SQ CPUs as if they're supposed to replace the Intel chips entirely. NO, that's why the Intel chips are still being offered. I bought a used 8GB Pro X only for drawing but decided to use it for work and it handled 2 extra screens much better than any power-equivalent x86 chip! I couldn't believe it didn't stutter or freeze at all when I kept maxing out the RAM. Its so good that I refuse to get a newer 16GB Pro.
I think instead of bashing Microsoft for building this device, they should start calling out developers to start supporting arm on windows. The future is arm and an OS can do so much without developer support. These kind of reviews is killing future of arm on windows.

@@Pg91357 It's also upsetting when Microsoft also doesn't push ARM to be the future of Windows. Apple is allowed to transition from x86 to ARM because they control the hardware/software stack, but Microsoft can only control so much of the hardware OEMs can use in their PCs.

@@kowan011 Microsoft never intend to abandon x86. They want to make Windows a dual platform OS running on x86 and ARM. This way, x86 and ARM can compete with each other.
Apple is different though. Their main customers are hipsters and content creators. That's easy for them to force their users to buy new devices. Meanwhile, Microsoft has to support all sorts of users from business, professional, military, ATM machines, and servers. Their main priority is stability not new features.
Windows on ARM is such a mess.
For well over a decade Qualcomm has never been able to produce a chip that scores better on benchmarks than the ones on the Iphone for their each respective year. So why the hell would I trust it on my own laptop?
Qualcomm Blunders:
Snapdragon 808/810 - Samsung did exynos that year cause of the overheating.
Snapdragon S3 - They performed so terribly on HTC devices such as the HTC Sensation, Samsung's Galaxy S2's processor did so much better that year.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 - It requires more power for performance this year, meaning its not as efficient.
I hate how these reviewers are not taking the ARM context into consideration. I mean, are Surface Pro 9 users really looking to game? This is a productivity device and they want to compare benchmarks to what Macbooks can do. I understand why they are reviewing it this way because the masses will probably be confused about ARM limitations.... Those who've had the Surface Pro X and X2 and fairly happy with it
So instead of the surface being a mediocre laptop and a mediocre tablet, it's now literally a horrible tablet and an even worse laptop? xD
Software engineer here.
It's a chicken and egg problem like Microsoft have always faced with things. There aren't enough ARM laptops for developers to spend time to make an ARM version and there aren't enough apps that work well with ARM for consumers to use an ARM laptop. I personally think it's brave for Microsoft to push this category forward, even if it's at their own expense on this one. It's the right step forward for the industry as we have clearly seen with Apple and this should clearly be acknowledged.
Apple has enough fan following that developers and consumers are going to follow their guidelines no questions asked, but the windows market is way different here. There are soo many competing brands and it's impossible to get them all to coordinate the shift to ARM.
This is true. So, how do you make the transition easier for both developers and end-users? Build a translation layer that bridges the divide in a usable manner. And if you can't do any of this, do not release a product that is so bad!
I'm not sure I agree. M1 Macs came out of nowhere, and their transition was built on the back of terrific x86 emulation.
You are not a software engineer, you are just an Apple fanboy positing misinformation.
WOA runs over 35 million computer apps/programs.
iPads run 1.9 million smartphone apps.
End of story...
Apple got so many thing right in the past to build that fanbase.
Also add the fact that Apple made a really good translation layer (Rosetta 2) that made x86 apps indistinguishable from native apps. If Microsoft can at least manage that they can drastically increase the chances of success for ARM Windows.
Edge has a native ARM app, its based on Chromium and can use the exact same extensions... but you were still wanting to use an emulated Chrome browser. Why? lol
Because lets be honest…..that was the whole point of them making the video. Tech media and Tech TH-camr’s operate in a bit of a bubble. There are some good channels out there who actually use tech in the real world, they’re just a bit harder to seek out but they do exist.
Reviewers always bias on WOA. I don't know why. I have experience with pro X SQ1 for about 3 years. Lower temperature, longer battery life, always connect with cloud gaming. Actually, I have no serious problem with pro x.
You're still not sure anyone wants a two-in-1 tablet/laptop hybrid? You realize since the surface first released Apple created the magic keyboard and started promoting the iPad as a laptop alternative? That touch screens have become standard on most laptop PCs?
I love how people just assume their own preferences or everybody else's.
This is a great business focused device. Microsoft Office apps run perfectly. How is Chrome being a resource hog a Microsoft fault? I would have loved to see him stream games from Xbox cloud gaming.
Office does run pretty well. However, I would just recommend people buy the Intel version, so you won't have to worry about anything not working, and everything basically just runs better with the Intel version. MS, need to make their own CPU like Apple has done.
Because even apple has great emulation for x86, like when chrome not yet coming to arm, their emulation is just a beast
@@williamcopeland2617 The ARM SOC is like Apple's. What differs is emulation vs translation. It's a software not hardware issue.
@@Adam-fl9uc Surface Pro 9 Intel blows out the ARM version by miles brotha. And the Pro 9 doesn't run as hot as you may think. Plus, with the Intel version your system can pretty much run anything unlike the ARM version. Hopefully in the future ARM versions will be able to keep up with Intel & AMD.
This video got so much bias going on. We already have ARM64 Spotify which is super-fast and responsive. He did not demo Xcloud Gaming. Why still use Chrome? That browser is so 2019. Updated office apps also flies even on my Pro X. Also, no demo of Adobe native apps, which I would like to see the performance improvement against SQ1 and SQ2.
It’s a marketing issue. He is trying to use it like an intel machine like Microsoft markets it. Whereas the iPad isn’t marketed as a MacBook. If Microsoft marketed this as a less than machine for the average user and priced it accordingly then I think it would do much better.
Why even comment on a non-gaming ARM device about its gaming performance? Apple ARM devices are also limited by these compromises and you can do less while being more expensive. One part I do agree is this could be a lot cheaper. Just watching the launch video you already know what the use case is for this device, why not focus on that? There is very weird bias in this review against Microsoft.
Not quite. Apple ARM devices are fine and have proven themselves to be capable. It's true they have limits but it's more about macOS itself than the hardware.
What if someone wants to do light gaming for some reason? At least they'll know its not good for gaming.
Does the tech reviewer not realise you can VERY easily create profiles in Edge or Chrome for work/personal use?
Frankly, I love my Pro X. It has all the power I need for my work (I don't game), and its battery life is unbelievable in a very thin case and virtually no screen bezels. This SQ3 pad is sure to be faster with the more complete Surface architecture. It's received very positive BUY reviews from PCWord, Oztabletpc, Windows Central, and others. Not clear why you call it "a lie."
Is your pro x SQ1 or 2? I'm all over the place with what to buy. Seems like the differences are negligible aside from price.
@@kamenwokaburuusokko I'm all over the place myself. There are tons of interesting devices but I want a 1080p webcam for work and almost all the devices I like only have 720p. The SQ1 is so cheap and has a great cam but I don't want to end up with some "dead end" device. I also don't want to spend an arm and a leg. Yes, from what I've read the SQ2 is only marginally better than the SQ1.
It seems like some biases are showing in this video. Chrome is the worst possible app to use on any laptop because of its performance and power usage so why would you do that? Edge is so much better now. For my use case, this is a great machine. I use this for business apps and lectures driving a projector, and it does this really well. I use it as a tablet when travelling and it does that well too. It runs all the apps I ask of it, and I see lots of Surface devices when travelling. I don't play games so I don't care about performance there.
Perhaps you should consider other use cases beyond your limited example.

I got me a Go 3 in a summer sale, just the Pentium Gold version 8GB version. For my use case it's pretty much perfect. The Atom is slower but for Office and Browser it's fast enough. 8GB is the minimum RAM IMO. I've tried the dock I use for the Steam Deck with it and I think most use cases should be ok with it.
Edit: my previous Windows tablet I could replace the battery, that is something I am concerned with Surface devices
I’ve gotten fallout 3 and new Vegas running on my SQ2 for some light gaming from time to time, I use this laptop for most functions I don’t understand all the hate for windows on arm
@@zetroc88 to me at least when I've realy looked into it at the beginning of Win on ARM, the forced Windows store was just the no go. And the result was slow or at least if you consider the prices, most devices are very well made with the corresponding high prices but a lot of cons compared to i5 or i7 or sometimes even Atom/Pentium Gold... only if you want battery life 100% and alomost everything else is not important, and no active cooling...
Apple has proven windows on Arm can be excellent on top of running as a VM, translations, emulations and all kinds of other overheads.
Blame Qualcomm for lagging behind the competition.
Hopefully Microsoft will address this with project Voltera.
I don't get why many people use multiple browsers instead of multiple profile feature available in all major browsers.
If your company uses the Microsoft Package (e.g., Outlook, Office, Teams, etc.), it may make sense to use Edge. Although, I have never used it.
I would of preferred a Ryzen option like I think most people would. Emulating windows apps is rather really sluggish or doesn't work at all
I take issue with the reviewer characterizing the SQ3 CPU as a "mobile processor" as if it weren't just as capable as an Intel desktop/laptop processor. Just because there isn't nearly enough native ARM software available for Windows on ARM PCs does not mean that the processors themselves are incapable of doing everything the x86/x64 variants can.

I can certainly understand your complaints with Usability. Usability as an issue for anybody. One of the reasons why I would actually push arm as a alternative to Intel for many people is not just the connectivity and longer battery life It's the fact that Intel by nature of their CISC architecture requires more power than the RISC architecture does to get the same result I think that if Microsoft can use and invest more fixing time into that emulation layer they should be able to hopefully resolve more of those problems with running Intel apps on top of an arm ship But I also think that they should take some cues from Apple and perhaps consider building their own arm ship from scratch just like Apple did And out do Qualcomm apple already out does Qualcomm.
My classic forever example - update or virus scanner is running, surface laptop amd is getting hot/warm and slowing the system especially the browser. On arm i haven't experienced any u stability like this due to a update going in the background etc. For some magical reason arm works both on cellphones and computers very responsively

I still use emulation with some Intel apps on my M1 MacBook, and it’s very fast as if it’s native.
I always love when reviewers compare the Surface Pro to the MacBook, when the Surface is a 2 in 1. Still the only device you fan use a pen with as a computer, unlike an IPad that still struggles to be a PC.
It is the closest we get to the SP9X. The M2 MB Air is the same ARM architecture so a comparison on battery and performance as well as app support is very relevant. Most buyers of the Surface Pro use it as a laptop as it ain’t a good tablet. I have a SP8 but also n iPad for tablets stuff due to the far superior tablets apps, that really shame WOA.
So, no you are wrong. The SP9X is a very disappointing device that still remains many generations behind Apple Silicon and TBH is a poor show by MS.

Sure an SQ3 and M2 are both ARM based, but that's like saying it's fair to compare an AMD Bulldozer A10 and an Intel Skylake i7 because they're both x86. Actually it's an even worse comparison because at least Skylake and Bulldozer ran the same OS.
@@SpencerN.C. It is aspirational, what MS and WOA have to target in performance, efficiency and app support. The SP9 Intel version is nice, if not a bit stale, and maybe MS has tacitly acknowledged that these 2-in-1’s are not really doing what they should be after nine years. I think the majority of people do not enjoy Windows on a tablet, clunky and lacking depth, and that it has reached a mediocre level of sales. Apple nailed it, no compromises; make the best laptop and best tablet and harmonise them. From sales, that is def a rip-roaring successful strategy, and I would love to see MS go the same direction. Even Google has abandoned ChromeOS laptops and moved back to Android tablets.🤔
@@andyH_England I have used every single surface as a tablet. It works fine, but I am a glutton for punishment as I owned several Android tablets.

@@andyH_England it's not a valid comparison at all. I mean other than maybe testing the thermals and some compatibility. But in terms of cross shopping it's not a good comparison at all.
Just because it's using an arm chip doesn't mean it's necessarily the right comparison. Until Mac OS allows for a touch screen, there's not going to be much overlap between people's shopping for this and people shopping for a MacBook.
Most people are not buying this device strictly because they want an arm-based laptop, they're buying it because they want everything else, a touch screen, a styus... They just prefer an arm chip to an Intel chip.
Let's be real, the tech journalists in North America are so hopelessly biased in favor of Apple that they turn every video into an Apple video.
I'm not in the market for a surface pro 9, but that makes me a pretty valid judge here because I have no Microsoft device or Apple bias. I just simply recognize that there is people that want to buy touch screen laptops with stylus support and they're not interested in buying a MacBook.
I do not think that are fading. I love that for the go. Great Battery, very light, and runs Edge, Outlook, Word, Excel, OneDrive and PowerPoint - Which I need for work (Mac version of Office is just not as good)... So no Problem in my usage until now. For the performance tasks, I use my Home Computer anyways.
If you want something like the HP folio you could go for a Microsoft Surface Laptop studio, I understand your frustration with the Arm version however I don't agree with your opinion on the form factor. It's great for engineering students who don't want iPads also it feels much better than a 2 in 1 / 360° hinge laptop.
I just don't like how something that could simplify a student's life is so expensive.
Hybrid is exactly what I want. Repairability it the main let down although Surface are gradually getting better at it.
As someone who has the surface go 2 and the pro X I can tell the pro x is miles ahead in performance of the go 2. Against other surface pros yes its not as powerful but it's not build for that. It's lighter, doesn't run hot and has a better battery life. For office stuff and webbrowsing it's perfect, I can even do coding in visual studio code and azure data studio, you are a bit more reliable on Microsoft products but windows on arm is a very early product but the pro x sq2 is a joy to use and I wouldn't trade it for a pro. Mainly because it does what I need it to, it's very portable, has 5g and it has no fan or grill so there isn't a way for dust to get it that you will never be able to get cleaned
you probably have the pentium go, my go 2 with m3 is pretty snappy
@@_Digitalguy I absolutely love the Go 3 and my Pro X. The reviewer doesn't get the concept of different machines for difference focuses. We're in that age where a system doesn't have to cost $5,000 and smoothly run video games to fit all needs.
Sounds like you just aren't a fan of the Surface design at all. And what problem are you having using the Surface Pro on your lap?
What most commenters don't get is that for an average consumer this device seems like a great deal since it's a Surface Pro 9 with 5G but it'll give them issues if they don't know what they're getting into.
Also the reviewer has his own preferences, I think to him it doesn't make sense to buy something this expensive only for it to work with compromise.
So maybe you guys will stop bashing him for bashing Microsoft.
Emulated apps on arm feel sluggish. You tried the 86_64 version of chrome, it's going to be bad. However firefox arm64 flies on my 855+ powered windows machine (my phone) so i'm sure this laptop would be doing okay as well. But in order to get windows on arm forward we need arm powered laptop that's just the way it is !
So biased 🤦🏻♂️ the guy was complaining about the CPU limitations 80% of the video...
Horrible "review." The folks opting for Windows on ARM know what they are getting... Loved my Pro X (SQ2) and now love my Pro 9 5G - keeps me productive on the go.
It's all I use and I run multi million dollar company. It's pretty much all I'll buy moving forward.
I'm not sure that it's arm that has the lower performance. I think that might be more QUALCOMM since Apple as you noticed has their own chips and they've shown how well they can perform.
As far as apps running native on this architecture like Google Chrome sadly Microsoft has no control over that since they are not the manufacturer of that application. That should be brought to the attention of Google and request that they make that app available on ARM just like on Intel and AMD but it seems odd that they wouldn't have already solved that problem since their software is already available on ARM in the Linux world.
As far as other apps not working as well this isn't an ARM issue but the fact that ARM is coming into a world dominated with CISC architecture which means that a dev kit should be utilized to make those apps natively ARM compatible and MS has made it available. Software manufacturers should be encouraged to make their software available on ARM.
Did the guy just complain about kickstand and say Macbook is better. Well, you have traditional surface laptop if you want that. Duhhh
Why can we mot have 5g on an intel system?
I've got the Surface Pro 8 i7 with 16gb and love it. I'd previously had the Surface Pro X and can't recommend people buy a Windows on ARM device. There's far too many compatibility issues, I couldn't even get virtual backgrounds in zoom to work. If you have a Samsung phone you can now hotspot off your phone automatically via Phone Link. Honestly, just buy the intel version.
You even owned a SPX because if you did you'd know there zero compatibility issues.
And SPX on Windows 11 runs over 35 million apps/programs.
As a Pro 8 owner (who had a Pro X previously and knows it does what I need) the main let down with the Pro 8 is the battery life. It sounds much better on the SQ3 models to be fair so I might be tempted…..In this video review it’s annoying that the reviewer says that the 20 hours video playback doesn’t really mean anything, where as I’m sure Engadget did an M1 Macbook comparison where they praised the Air and pro M1 for reaching 18 and 20 hours

If your benchmark is so not representative of real world performance, running only a looping video, to the point of doubling real-world battery life, perhaps you should revise your benchmark.
Can you make calls with it?
its a work pc on the go and in the field not playing games.... so review it accordingly engadget.... if you cannot balance on your legs then I recommend you doing more leg exercises in the gym as they sound weak....
I'm new to the computer world, I'm enjoying learning about it. Back in the day, I was into old school mechanical drafting. You know with the drawing board, T-square, 90°-45° angles etc. I come up with designs in my mind and want to bring them to life. But want to switch to learning Auto Desk CAD or Shapr 3D. I'm in the process of retraining my mind away from Android system to Microsoft 11. I was lucky enough to purchase the Surface Pro 8 from Amazon with their 5 payments installment option. I thought I was going to be able to connect to the internet with cellular data. Wrong. It was my fault. But I still would like to be able to design away from Wi-Fi and connect to the internet in remote places at times. I'm not a big fan of Google/ Android because I get pissed off at it because trying to guess what the root path to solve to do a task is counter intuitive in my opinion. Few things seam logical to me. I get the impression Google, Chrome, Android, TH-cam app are data mining for artificial intelligence, knows what I'm trying to do, but doesn't offer any suggestions while I waste time.
Windows 11I can figure out much easier. Long story to ask. Would swapping the Surface Pro 8 (non- cellular) with the Surface Pro 9 LTE 5G cellular be a good idea? I would be so happy if anyone has any thoughts besides, this comment is too lol long.
Updated: I'd rather have the best best Surface Pro for Shapr 3D than the occasional need for cellular data connection. Should I just stick to Surface Pro 8 with 16 GB RAM and 256 GB storage. 🙏👍 Thanks.
Microsoft keep messing this up year after year just put a 5G modem into the X86 Intel device already without forcing us to buy an inferior spec'd device.
If they want to push ARM fine but it needs to be on par or better than the Intel version not worse performing and more expensive.
A bit long review that you repeat specifics. Anyways, you're comparing a 2in1 to a laptops, the dell, the airbook. After 10 years, you would think this isn't a laptop. Heck, I love the Surface Pro because it's NOT a laptop. If I wanted a laptop, I would choose a laptop, not a 2:1
Crikey, you cannot be happy with the state of WOA and defending it is not gonna change anything. This is a letdown and we need to tell MS to improve, rather than be an apologist. Shockingly sub-par and really what is going on, when Apple after two years of Apple Silicon on Macs has gained a massive lead despite MS being at this for 15 years or more. Sorry, but comments like this make me think that people have one rule for Apple and another for MS, sorta favouritism above sensibility.

Why are you using Chrome on this at all instead of edge? Of course it's going to be slow, it's emulated. Firefox has amd64 support and edge but of course you just focus on Chrome. Also spotify has a PWA you could've used.

You really haven't understood the Surface Pro after all these years.
Microsoft make this Surface Pro9 5G for bulk corporate purchases whose staff mainly use Microsoft 365, Edge browser, Teams and the 5G connectivity.
When Apple switched from Intel to M series chips, all developers instantly listened and made their apps available for ARM... But when Microsoft did it, nope not much hype
Another hate for the SQ chips however the main audience of tablet/laptops is business or light work use. These are normally lower i3 dells etc so anyone using those machines to do work would be more than fine to use an SQ processor. As I write this on the Surface Pro X, while searching reviews to see if SQ3 is a good choice for an upgrade due to 120hz screen and a 60+% claimed gain in performance to the SQ1 chip. Like most gamers I have desktop PC custom built for that sport of thing, but for office use and on the go I need something that isn't a Chromebook but gets good performance to battery life. This is where the Surface Arm comes in for people like me. I really wish reviews looked to see what audience and who what product is for vs these click bait hate videos that do not help anyone....
Sigh it gets so tiresome when reviewers bash technology that has a specific use case because it doesn't support other use cases. Windows on arm needs time to grow and yet people keep pissing on it

Wish tech reviewers would stop badmouthing the Windows on ARM platform because it is NOT FOR THEM. I've only used a Surface Pro X for 3 years now. It's great. All my Apps are either Native ARM or run just fine under emulation. It's really not the problem it was on Windows 10. There's no Microsoft lie, just alot of ignorant tech reviewers out there.
I normally really like your guys' reviews but you guys needed to re-do this one. The SQ CPUs are Not replacements for Intel chips so they should be be reviewed like they are. This is an ARM device and ARM has its limitations for demanding software and this isn't what this device is being purchased for. Only noob-device users will be using Chrome on an ARM device btw. A lot of ppl don't use it in powerful desktops anymore....
Games? Why is there NEVER mention of games on the Intel Surface Pros but it's always mentioned on thre ARM Surface Pros? Expecting games on ANY Surfaec Pro just shows a total misunderstanding of the Surface Pro. Microsoft has never designed Surface Pro for games :-/
Bias review and partly not well done in my view. For instance, the part about Slack seemingly not working at 1:04 on the Surface Pro X, even if showed for a second is not true, I use it and it runs flawlessly. The Surface Pro line in general and even more so any connected version of the device isn't meant for gaming, seriously if that's somebody's aim they'll go with Asus, not a Surface device. In general, gamers looking to play heavy games get gaming laptops to play not even regular laptops, let alone tablets, so if that's criticism of the Surface line, all other tablets should get the same criticism. Real heavy games will run almost any tablet hot. Also, it's pretty clear the device is mostly for work, all MS apps work flawlessly on ARM and the use of Edge makes a lot more sense if someone is going to look things up for work without Chrome to do it with, which is effectively spyware with the amount of tracking it does. Lastly, it's not like any Surface device is advertised for play, they're fairly expensive and are mostly useful for the type of work people do in office context while being able to also run Netflix gven the high resolution and the likes, but not for gaming. Artists will want the Studio line obviously. Also the 5G is more so about security versus using random wi-fi networks, which supports the work angle over the entertainment side of many if not most tablets. Agreed on the battery life though, it doesn't run as long as advertised, otherwise it does what it is supposed to.

They are pushing things that are not ready. They need to get the emulation as good as Rosetta 2 first.
MS support reps have sworn blind to me that this thing has the ability to make and receive calls and texts with its 5G modem, not by linking to a separate phone or using VoIP services. They claim it has a proper phone app. There's nothing in the specs to suggest that and that feature isn't even available on the vast majority of Android tablets so, if they aren't lying, that's pretty huge. There's no reason they couldn't port the apps from the last Windows Phone, assuming the SQ3's 5G driver exposes the necessary features, but I still find it hard to believe given how hard it is to find even an android tablet with a real phone app.
Maybe you should start shaming developers for not developing apps for Windows on ARM.... This isnt Microsoft's issues its 100% on the developers.
oh give me a break. no one really wants? why are they doing so well? My first Surface was a Pro 3 and I loved it. Now I have a Surface Laptop Studio and It has made making music so much easier. I love it. after all these years how can you get away of saying these things?
Addressing ARM. I kind of agree though there's an awful lot you can do on the Arm chips. for the basic road warrior they are great. but I stick to intel also. I need to make music and basic video editing and Arm isn't good for that.

Microsoft doesn't have a foundation as solid as Apple does in ARM-chip competition. When Apple migrates its ecosystem to ARM based chip... thousand devs forced to tinker their app to run well on those chips. When Windows does with SQ chip... devs will just ignore it.

Dang, that was a damning review. I was so excited about this device, but once you said the Surface Go 2 outperforms it, that kind of did it for me. The Core M Surface Go 2 is the absolute minimum that fits my needs.
I would honestly try one out and decide from there, for many the intel model will be a better choice but this review makes multiple mistakes like talking about some mythical “Pro Keyboard” which is supposed to have better keys than the type cover….They also brush over the fact they chose to download an x64 version of Chrome to do their testing; if you love Chrome then it might not be the device for you but browsers are one of the worst things you could emulate, you basically need to use Firefox or Chrome with the 5G version.

The video is downer. No way people buy arm processor if I need to run real application, why would they? That's why they have intel. And kickstand is never be great if you put it on your laps, is it that hard to figure out? Hardly there's a chance for me to put laptop on my laps. Soo many review videos nowadays do thing stuff, ugh...
Of course emulation is slower. You buy this because you want to use native apps only and your want the battery life of Snapdragon. And Microsoft can move development of Windows on ARM and ARM apps on Windows ARM along for new Apple silicon like chips (Snapdragon X Elite) with much better performance and efficiency. It is a beta product sort of for enthusiasts.

Best to use your phone with 5g as a personal hotspot assuming an unlimited data plan and choose the intel surface option.
Emulating an app to measure performance will not get you good results. For gaming, cloud streaming games would solve that as the Surface in general is bad for gaming unless you add an eGPU. Overall good review of the compromises of the device.
Surface Pros are not designed for gaming.
They are designed for working adults with real jobs.

the reviewer is just stating facts what you get for starting 1300 bucks . while it is great for windows to shift to arm, the product you get just not worth it
Funny, for me an iPad or a laptop without touchscreen are super compromised and force you to carry 2 devices. The design of the Surface is unmatched in Apple world and there is nothing from Dell or other that is at the same level of refinement than the Surface Pro. I guess to each its own but comparing a Surface Pro user to MacBook shoes how some journalists are disconnected from the reality.
Yeah I feel like all these apple apologists will find an excuse every video to explain why Apple is best and nobody wants to two in one and blah bl... Surface pro lineup is the flagship product for service and clearly has found a very successful niche. This whole review is dripping with bias in favor of Apple, which is hardly unique in North America

I have a Surface 2, and it was been ignored by Microsoft very quickly.
Here’s what happened on it:
There’s no new edge browser, no Windows 10 upgrade. And if you reset the system, you don’t even have the ability to connect to the Windows Update and MS Store server, and you will lose the ability to play local videos (because it forces you to update video player to do that).
By using the third party way you can only upgrade to Win 10 1607, still only a little bit programs can be run on it because arm version of apps are switched to arm64. And still no New edge can be installed on it, so you have only have Old edge to browse the internet.
To be honest, the situations even worse than x86 Android 5.
So that’s why I pity on someone who bought an Arm-based Windows device.
I can believe arm-based SOC, but I don’t believe Microsoft.
it is funny how Microsoft, the publisher & creator of Windows can't create a better or comparable emulation like Rosetta. MS should not release these products to the consumer with these much bugs and incompatible BS especially when you are charging premium price for it
Qualcomm's right now can't hold water to the Apple M-chips. You can't even do light video editing with it. MS doesn't put a lot of effort into Win on ARM. Linux runs better on a RK3588S than Windows on a Snapdragon.
I have a laptop with Snapdragon 850. I occasionally use it to edit videos using ClipChamp and it's quite good. It actually beats the crap out of my previous i5. Adreno handles graphics much better than Intel HD Graphics.
And SQ3 is supposed to be 3x more powerful than my 850. 8cx gen 3 is around 80% of M1 performance so to say that it can't hold water with Apple is a bit of a stretch. And that's only using Cortex X1 cores. We have Cortex X3, Immortalis G715 and nuvia cores coming.
@@rrsharizam If you compare Apple to Apples, a recent x86 12th gen Intel, Ryzen 6 with ARM on Win and also with Apple's M2 on MacOS, the most likely outcome is that ARM on Win sucks.

5 G is a sales scheme for many companies, here in rural America we hardly see a 5G connection pop up. Just lost 3 G towers and lost cellular connectivity in many areas.

Chrome on a Windows on ARM PC ffs. It's always Chrome they bang on about. Look we get it you're obsessed with Chrome but you could've given Edge a try, It runs JUST the same and works great. Chrome really. It's embarrassing.
I’m unimpressed with this review. I wanted to know the differences between the SQ1 and SQ3. Not yet another whinging review of Windows on ARM x86/x64 emulation, which has both been beaten to death already and is not exclusive to Surface devices.
