I don't actually want to play WoW anymore and sink months and sub time into it. That said, Next expansion I'll probably play again. maybe even argus or I'll just watch it.
Main reason I quit is due to the constant changes to classes, why not appreciate your class for what it is? I can't stand how they pruned half my spellbook, and change core mechanics every single expansion. After I found it hard to recognize my main with nearly 300days /played time, I must say I was pretty heartbroken. Quit a game I've played for over 10 years. Perhaps it was time to quit, who knows.
They didn't need to add/ remove half of the spellbook for classes because i assumed of it being "op". They could of just reworked the skills to make it more fair. Then again i stopped played wow since cataclysm as it took my life over :L

I agree. I'm fed up with the constant changes in abilities, and playstyle. I don't mind minor changes but I hate the fact they remove like half of the class abilities. I also hate how they trying to make pvp more balance by not making it gear based. I think that's stupid andgesr should impact your pvp. I miss the good old days where you can nuke a noob in two hits. I also miss how I used to get really excited in cataclysm when I get pvp weapons knowing I'll have significant DMg increased. Old wow was so awesome
Ba Ru Its not unusual to pine for something that was engrossing during your childhood. I find, however, that sense of nostalgia is short lived. WoW is just boring now and people want something different. Game quality has gone to shit catering to casuals. It takes zero effort to see all the content.

The only thing that matters in WoW nowadays is OCD. nothing else. Casuals quit and ocd people keep playing even though most of them don't enjoy the game anymore. It's sad as fuck. Ok, now bye guys I have to farm some artifact power and there is an invasion in highmountain.

Correct, to me after burning crusades it started to go down hill. People’s attitude also started to suck, people needing items for a character that didn’t even use them and just people being rude and starting arguments because their bored. I wish I could get back into it but my gears way behind, all the time and effort spent of grinding for nothing has left me sour.
I dropped wow when they added the auto-join feature for battlegrounds, raids and dungeons. I noticed afterwards that other players were far, far less social than they used to be, and I could go entire dungeons without hearing anything from my teammates. It was like the sense of community and adventure just went away.
The two biggest things that ruined it for me was LFG and Heirlooms, Heirlooms to me killed the game and I know most peoples response is just don't use them but the problem remains that everyone else is you can't just go pvp someone without dying in like 2 swipes, they were a disaster of an idea.
luckiy its balance out when it comes to gear, but I do tink twink would be good for world pvp in questing zones or old raid, I'm not legion defender I'm just pointing out ways to make wow interesting
Piglet Well, months later Heirlooms are no longer the most effective gear, and using them trades combat power for experience gains, especially with the new leveling process. That’s probably how it should have been from the start. Group Finder is still a problem though.

WoW had the huge advantage of being released in a time where there werent really many competitors, let alone good ones!!! and Marketing of it was extremely good, and very accessible!!! hardly enough choices for people to make! xb there are tons of MMO's now days!! aka lots of competition to pull people in many directions toward tons of different games and there is little to no Marketing!!! i have to go out of my way to find out about MMO's now days plus WoW had a huge advantage when cable tv was a thing!! it came on almost every commercial break... not to mention Blizzard WAS the first big company on the MMO scence... all the others where small time ones... aka no viable competition!!! its like with Minecraft... it was the first game of its type to see great Marketing via youtube... way more then others that were out there... it was very accessible as well!!! and every game since in both genra's have been reduce to people calling them clones or wanna be's even runescape is still more populace then most mmo's today... why... its accessibility is bar none until we see another huge Marketing feat from another big company, Wow will be on top no matter how much better the next game is...
Hey Peon. I actually wanted to write a huge ass story of my WoW experience but everytime I started to write down my thoughts I lost myself in little detaills such as gearscore and stuff so I try to make it short. You're absolutely right. World of Warcraft as we used to know is dead and I don't think that it'll ever come back. A private Vanilla server is just perhaps an attempt to bring back nostalgia or the same feeling one had when starting wow the first time but I don't know if this is the solution. I actually tried vanilla on a private server (Kronos..here there you have it ! :D ) and although I actually started playing WoW back in tbc (retail), I loved my time during Kronos. Yes it was a pain in the ass grind, yes everything was a grind, yes I know the game was basically a grind but I loved it. It felt adventures, I needed to talk with other players in order to progress I needed to get some potions so I won't go out of mana. It felt just awesome. The game felt (well I had the feeling on Kronos) full and alive. Everywhere I went were players and they were ready to help me at quests they already finished, almost every player I met (On Kronos, not on elysium however...), was so kind and nice and I teamed up with the same player for a week to clear deadmines a couple of times. I loved the idea that you had to prepare yourself for a dungeon or for elitequests. Nowadays everything has changed. I'm still playing WoW and I'm almost done with the meta achievement for pathfinder part one, I only need to finish suramar (2 more lorequestchains to go mates!!!) but honestly? The only reason I keep playing is my guild. I really like the people I'm around with and it's freaking fun to play with them it doesn`t matter if we do mythics or just BGs or open pvp it's just fun to play this game with these dudes and it's the major reason I'm still playing wow. Legion is a decent expansion pack but WoW we used to know is dead. I don`t know if I will keep playing legion for the next couple of months or even until the end of this year but the more I play, the less I want to. I don`t want to do x mythics just to push my gear until 900+ but no one wants to raid because everyone forgot how to communicate (except for my guildmates but we're just 3 people haha..), I don`t want to grind artifact power and I hate the order hall system with the retarded follower system and ..I could go on and on. To sum up my thoughts I just wanted to say, that you`re not alone Peon. Perhaps we just grew out of the game but I know and you know that WoW was awesome and it still could be but too much has changed. Anyway, sorry for the length I wanted to keep it short but..yeah anyway. awesome video ;)
I was going to write this long reply but will suffice to say that us older players are still around and yes nilla is remembered fondly , but we are also talking about a game originally going for a 18+ community and had much more free range( unless you got stuck in a port under a major city or mountain climbing).The environment was perhaps a bit different but then again you had people coming from games like evercrack who were used to grouping and such. Long story short nostalgia comes with rose colored glasses and lets us forget all the issues(blood plague is just 1 example), glitches and attitudes that still existed back then. Only real difference now is that well our kids play now lol

uhm..you misunderstood something here. The grinding aspect in legion feels just useless as shit. In Vanilla the grind was killing one mob after another to get a certain item, in Legion you grind through neverending hcs, mythic and mythic + dungeons just to replace that gear you got after a mythic +2 dungeon. Vanilla was great because the atmosphere and the overall feel to the game was different. Now the playerbase is hardly talking to eachother and you can actually beat the game without entering a single guild. I myself play Legion but as I said the only reason is my guild. It sometimes doesn`t matter how grindy a game is if it's worth in the end and in vanilla this was the case for me. ;)
In nilla you would grind hours and hours to level or get an item and you still do be it a world drop or an instance in the end it's all the same you are still grinding for that something and trying to improve a character which by the next xpak will be useless in what 3 levels just to see all you did in reality changed nothing in the game except now ilvl. I played since nilla and raided nax just to see it return at level 80 into something that was a pale shade of what it had been. I saw Onyxia become a joke and hakar become well worthless. So yes looking back we all have rose glasses .
I recommend people make level 20 characters and lock them, let your subscription run out. They'll be free to play, stay in whichever guild you left them in, and they'll still be playable in PvP. Best part is you'll never have to re-gear them for the rest of your life. It's a nice remedy for former players who get the itch to play once in a while.
Lots of legitimate complaints. I never really did understand why people would play wow if they didnt enjoy End game raiding or PvP. But wow does have a lot to do outside of those at the start of expansions and during new patches which can be enjoyed as a single player-ish game I guess. Also I've always hated gearing up in pvp. I love the new system in comparison.

Thats me. Up until WoD I'd NEVER taken even a break. With WoD I took 4 months off during HFC to play FFXIV for the first time. In Legion, I'm about ready to unsub with no other game lined up to take its place. Its definitely just wearing thin at this point.
Imo that is all because it's a "Theme Park MMO". What I want is a very hard time obtaining a certain piece of gear which will stick with me till endgame. Afterwards you can upgrade based on what you have, an endless grind to get a item which will be useless in a while is pointless for me. In WoW I had more fun Transmogging than PvP or PvE. But that's just me.
i've really only play vanilla and bc for years straight, haven't played any expansion that long. Mogs are the only thing that will stick. All of our 895+ items and legendaries will be useless in another 1. What we do get is perfecting our rotation and situation adaptation for the new spec updates.
This video answered my question of whether I should play WoW again or not. The comparison between sandbox and theme park MMO was the perfect way to explain it because I could never find what exactly it was that caused me to quit so many times. Excellent video. 10/10.
Not necessarily, a ground-breaking MMO might just be what makes WoW die out in the end, or makes it bleed subs by a big margin. But I do get your point.
For me its Final Fantasy XIV :) that game showed me how wow is fucking boring. Because I dont like raiding and PVP is garbage, but in FF there is everysingle class you can play with only one character and even the professions are fun. Not like in WoW where you just click a button and you make a fucking hammer.
Budliky - Yeah Final Fantasy XIV is amazingggg. Played WoW for 13 years but with FFXIV, I got to level 60 and would do dungeons that made me feel left out and too far behind. As a black mage people would complain I'm not doing my spells right, etc. So I decided to stick with WoW because it's what I knew well.
There will never be another WoW. MMOs will hit a wall in the next few years and vanish for a while before they reemerge as games built for people with 12 hours a day to play.
I`m feeling the exact same way Peon but i still can`t quit, usually i have a break for a week or two and then come back again. I tried many games even the one that was my first mmo ever (OSRS) didn`t work , then i tried Black Desert and the game didn`t even opened . I was getting dced everytime i tried to log in due to a stupid cinematic. Then i said that i was done with mmorpgs and started playing CS :GO and Legue of legends played them for a few weeks got bored and here i am back to my warrior in World of Warcraft. I seriously need some help 10 years is enough of playing a game i even got 400 days on my warrior /played time WHAT? Am i an addict or something :( .
I'm not sure but if you would like The old Star wars Galaxy (before the expansion that turned it into a wow clone) then I could recommend The repopulation or well EVE... I would go whit The repopulation.
Too many macro BS and hacks. Super powered mouses with 1,000 buttons. Not to mention them classes that are more OP than others. Definitely can see where this discourage's people.

That bit about pvp..."I want to feel OP" dumbest thing I've ever heard. Like ya when balance is messed up and some classes are OP its fun, but not realistic, maybe get better at pvp so you can "pwn noobs" with your skill and not your gear
I actually hate gear being a factor in PvP. I should lose because I was outplayed not because the other guy just pressed his nose against a sandbelt for longer than I did, even if he sucks massively.
The problem is that gear still matters a LOT in PvP. Someone 20 ilvls above you is gonna wreck you completely. And at the same time they completely removed PvP gear. So if you want to seriously PvP you need to do high end PvE content to be viable, and most people PvP because they have no interest in the PvE content... Bring back PvP gear, or at least make the PvP drops be on the same level as raids, not 40 ilvls below them...
I think arena does a good job at balancing this out by only matching you with players who are around your skill level. Of course having better gear makes you stronger, why else would it even exist? I agree though it shouldn't be the sole determining factor. I still remember PvP in BC, I was able to defeat players with much better gear than me because I knew exactly where I had to stand, when which spells would do what, etc etc. I think the balance should be around 30% of your power is gear, 70% is knowing your class. Haven't done any PvP since Wrath though. If I didn't love crafting and grinding so much I would probably stop playing altogether.

I feel you man, I played wow for about 5 years. First year and half was non stop playing, then eventually on and off. Haven't played wow in about 2 years now. I listen to the music all the time, and it feels me with nostalgia, giving me an ich to play. However, I know I've outgrown the game now, things change overtime along with your taste. Don't sweat it man.
Get to now the people in your guild and have fun with them That's what I love about the game If its me or another guild member messes up we laugh about it and learn not to do it next time Having fun in the game is what I love. Don't get stressed out just have fun and enjoy the game.
Great video! All of your points are reasonable while offering constructive critisms for the dev team to consider if they want to keep active subscribers. I personally stopped playing WoW during MoP for similar reasons. I have been playing Final Fantasy XIV for the past few years and I am beginning to feel the same tedious way again for majority of the reasons you explain in this video. What keeps me mostly interested in XIV is the dev team playing the nostalgia card by having fan favorite characters reintroduced into the game as NPC's, FATES, and boss/raid fights.
Just playing wow due to the polish and friendships made at this point. Until a game comes along that changes the current MMO status quo of "Single-player game with tacked on multiplayer and chatroom support." then there isn't much reason to change. Every other MMO I try just feels like I'm doing terrible grindy MMO quests while requiring me to talk to no one. :| Can't we just have an MMO where I need to talk and group with people? I feel like that can't be too hard to make.
most people online playing wow (myself included) are playing it because they are usually introverted and just want to stick to a small group of people that they somewhat know and requiring people to talk would turn many players away from the game for the reasons I just mentioned and some people wouldn't want to buy just to play the game and new players would be turned off by that such as younger players who just want to play with there parents sure the kid and parents can make alts but in single child and single parent homes that would be hard because most of the quest and gameplay would require for then two people to do and you can't report someone for foul language and expect them to get a perm ban raiding (except LFR) requires talking especially if its heroic or mythic raiding and in those guilds you can find plenty of people wanting to push high mythic + keys which also requires talking even then you can find groups in mythic + to talk to if you want new people to talk to
I always defend legion, but recently i've tried a vanilla private server and I can no longer defend legion. Wow is beyond repair, vanilla is so fun.. current wow is just different.. in a non-good way.
I started current wow in MoP, and i've never even leveled through westfall because i'm always level 15 by the time I do a few quest there and then I can just dungeon spam.
play a vanilla character just to level 10 and then you'll know.. It feels like a real rpg if you've ever played one, It's challenging, there's people everywhere. there's always stuff to do, besides increasing your ilvl, raiding, and pvp... There's professions, leveling takes at least 500 hours by itself (and it's fun to do with people), Getting a blue or purple piece of gear for the first time is actually an accomplishment since you're walking around in grays and greens for 20 levels. Current wow is still fun I guess.. but when I play on nostalrius it feels like a completely different game, like a real mmorpg..
Boots vanilla was broken on so many levels .... i will never ever have that feeling again which i had first time in elwyn forest or first time doing an instance or killing nefarian but that was because it was all new and fresh back than not because game was better ? hardly any specc worked at all .... sone zones were either totally abandoned or so poorly designed. quests omfg i remember doing succubus quest on my human lock it had me go to barrens at level 20 go to fukin darkshore with no mounts and no flight path lol is that your idea of fun ???
jodhan79 I did that Quest like 2 weeks ago on Elysium and i have to admit that I prefer it do just going to the trainer. It might be hard because you have to run through an lvl 30 area with lvl 20 but the reward and satisfying feeling of accomplishment is just worth it.
Good video. This is kind of the reasons I stopped playing first time when Burning Crusade came out... all the time spent and then all just reset. And it's been getting worse.
Try the game "DDO" (Dungeon and Dragon Online) It's not like the dice game, it's more related to WoW, with slightly different game mechanics, and better graphics. You're items also don't get outdated, like the expansion packs do to your items when the come out. DDO has been going for 11 years strong since it's launch in 2006, and new expansions, only give you more quests to play, and more class specific gear. Instead of just completely out-dating your old gear, DDO creates gear, with more optimal stats for certain play styles. You can also multi-class in DDO. So if you want to be a healer, who can swing a greataxe, and be a melee too, you can certainly accomplish that. You should try it out, it sounds like it would fit your gaming style.
And the FTP version, gives you an easy 2-3 weeks of playable content. I have been struggling with my decision to stop play wow for years now. I have not played it for years but I seem to come back every few years if a new expansion is released.Doubting to get back in but after a few hours or sometimes minutes I can't get over the dullness. I've watched a lot of videos whether to play or not play wow. But none of them put it as clearly as you did. I totally agree with your argument about the character progress being resetted and the raid being dull because the replaying aspect. I hope that Blizz makes a WoW2
you brought some very good points but my favorite was the one with the zones and how with each expansion you will spend all of your time just in a few areas. It would be amazing if Blizzard could make all of the zones relevant and worth traveling to. Nice work
this video is about " i cant clear higher difficulty raid. im bored" , "i cant be op and stomp no geared noobs in pvp anymore. pvp sucks!" fyi, mmorpg that doesnt do some fresh reset or something like that will die. new players can never catch up like that. theres a reason almost all of new mmorpgs are doing expansion things.
In vanila you couldn't clear Raid if you raid group is smaller then 25 people and not geared for raid- and this is like hight lvl top gear. And wipe always could happen.
The size thing is correct, the gear part is just untrue, most people were god awful at Vanilla not because they were bad, but because there was few information and WoW in Vanilla to Wotlk was the Facebook of gaming; everyone and their grandson's nephew's sister played it. This wasn''t a bad thing but seeing as many a private server's freshly released Naxx is just getting cleared within 2-4 weeks...Eh. To the "high top gear", well it wasn't hard to get for some classes and god awful to get for others I'll give you that. Some pieces were crafted items like the Warr helmet, some were just loot from UBRS/LBRS/Strat/scholo, and some was just from some weird place like a lower-ish dungeon or cloth gear for a holy paladin which didn't matter anyway tbh beyond a bit of mana for OOC rezzing and buffs. And "wipe always could happen" isn't new or old - of course you can wipe. Being able to die isn't really a thing any MMORPG of any age should be proud of, it should be normal. And in mythic difficulty raiding, the best guild in the world that plays the game for a living - something that wasn't very common in Vanilla either but I bet did happen a little here n there - spent HUNDREDS of wipes on current content. I don't like the many difficulties but the hardest one is insanely challenging, requires lots of grinding and consumables and also means "bring the player AND the class" - justt like in Vanilla. Just harder. And if you're talking TBC, it just so happens that all of this also applies to TBC except the gearing part which was a lot better and classes wore less weird gear. Paladins actually had logical gear now, which was super nice of Blizz.
I'm weird person, I use to find the game much more fun than today's expansions, that beautiful old school atmosphere that I use to dwell in is no longer existing in those new expansions, raiding seems dim and having no taste (to me), those mysteries are no longer present for me to go out, work hard in order to discover, this is only subjective and that's what makes me think it's quality is dying.
It is only mid tier game in Activision's stable to be sure. A lot of WOW players are in denial over it, but in the grand scheme of things, it is just not that important anymore. I also think that the moment to release a WOW2 has come on gone. That ship.sailed out to sea long ago.

Stop saying you outgrew the game, that makes no sense. I don't even play WoW anymore but saying you grew out of it is not right. You can never be too old to play WoW.
I have had to take multiple breaks while playing WoW. I am always so behind and can never catch up because I cannot dedicate as much time as I'd like. I am tempted to go back, but I know I'll only feel behind/stressed out about it. Although it gives me an excuse to level another toon or do throwback content.
just play casually if you don't have enough time and you won't fall behind because to you it wont matter you can play wow and have fun without having to invest a lot of time like mythic raiders do and many if then you would stop leaving the game and the caught up during the next expac and may join a normal mabey even dipping into heroic guild or a low cr PvP guild if that's what you like or a low geared mythic + guild with now set raiding time you could join a group as a pug or join a pug and the guild will always be doing something or join a casually guild with fun conversations in guild chat
I love playing Wow and will never stop playing All my gear is over 900 I have a great guild and we help each other in the guild If I need help I get it and if someone needs my help I am there for them Being in a great guild and having friends in the guild is so cool I love it
To be honest, it's not 'their' fault. It's human beings as a whole. We take pleasure in improving things and improving things and soon enough we've become so technologically advanced that we replaced human interaction with robotic usage. For example/ running to dungeons and world pvp was replaced with one-click dungeon queue and pvp queue. It's our fault..
See, I've thought about this. World of Warcraft developers designed the game, so that the character must continue growing. Adding new expansion content, modifying class abilities, designing new monsters and attack mechanics.. these are all great things. I mean, if Blizzard only added new gear and places to explore / conquer then the game would be missing something. Revamping the system is actually a good idea to keep the game content fresh and the players excited. The BIG DOWNFALL is when developers created content that lessened the difficulty, and created queue systems that discouraged world exploration ( sit in major cities and queue all day ), and finally, moved away from serious story line improvement by constantly leveraging old content from the Burning Crusade.
That's one of the things GW2 did well -- horizontal progression. The content can be challenging without forcing players to get tier after tier. I was away from the game for about a year, and came back to still having the BiS gear -- which allowed me to focus on masteries (a different form of progression), getting through the new story content, and diving right into raids and new fractals. The open world metas are still satisfying too.

This resonates so much with how I feel about WoW and why I've left. For the first time since 2006 I will not be coming back for the new xpac, I know it's just going to be another month or two of nostalgia and fun before I hit cap and get bored of it again. It's been fun, and I sincerely do hope when Classic launches I can get back into that, but time will tell

Main reason I quit is due to the constant changes to classes, why not appreciate your class for what it is? I can't stand how they pruned half my spellbook, and change core mechanics every single expansion. After I found it hard to recognize my main with nearly 300days /played time, I must say I was pretty heartbroken. Quit a game I've played for over 10 years. Perhaps it was time to quit, who knows.

They didn't need to add/ remove half of the spellbook for classes because i assumed of it being "op". They could of just reworked the skills to make it more fair. Then again i stopped played wow since cataclysm as it took my life over :L

I agree. I'm fed up with the constant changes in abilities, and playstyle. I don't mind minor changes but I hate the fact they remove like half of the class abilities. I also hate how they trying to make pvp more balance by not making it gear based. I think that's stupid andgesr should impact your pvp. I miss the good old days where you can nuke a noob in two hits. I also miss how I used to get really excited in cataclysm when I get pvp weapons knowing I'll have significant DMg increased. Old wow was so awesome

Correct, to me after burning crusades it started to go down hill. People’s attitude also started to suck, people needing items for a character that didn’t even use them and just people being rude and starting arguments because their bored. I wish I could get back into it but my gears way behind, all the time and effort spent of grinding for nothing has left me sour.

I dropped wow when they added the auto-join feature for battlegrounds, raids and dungeons. I noticed afterwards that other players were far, far less social than they used to be, and I could go entire dungeons without hearing anything from my teammates. It was like the sense of community and adventure just went away.

The two biggest things that ruined it for me was LFG and Heirlooms, Heirlooms to me killed the game and I know most peoples response is just don't use them but the problem remains that everyone else is you can't just go pvp someone without dying in like 2 swipes, they were a disaster of an idea.

Piglet Well, months later Heirlooms are no longer the most effective gear, and using them trades combat power for experience gains, especially with the new leveling process. That’s probably how it should have been from the start. Group Finder is still a problem though.
They revamped that now. Leceling is awesome cause you never level outnof that area.

Hey Peon. I actually wanted to write a huge ass story of my WoW experience but everytime I started to write down my thoughts I lost myself in little detaills such as gearscore and stuff so I try to make it short.
You're absolutely right.
World of Warcraft as we used to know is dead and I don't think that it'll ever come back. A private Vanilla server is just perhaps an attempt to bring back nostalgia or the same feeling one had when starting wow the first time but I don't know if this is the solution. I actually tried vanilla on a private server (Kronos..here there you have it ! :D )
and although I actually started playing WoW back in tbc (retail), I loved my time during Kronos. Yes it was a pain in the ass grind, yes everything was a grind, yes I know the game was basically a grind but I loved it. It felt adventures, I needed to talk with other players in order to progress I needed to get some potions so I won't go out of mana. It felt just awesome. The game felt (well I had the feeling on Kronos) full and alive.
Everywhere I went were players and they were ready to help me at quests they already finished, almost every player I met (On Kronos, not on elysium however...), was so kind and nice and I teamed up with the same player for a week to clear deadmines a couple of times.
I loved the idea that you had to prepare yourself for a dungeon or for elitequests.
Nowadays everything has changed. I'm still playing WoW and I'm almost done with the meta achievement for pathfinder part one, I only need to finish suramar (2 more lorequestchains to go mates!!!) but honestly?
The only reason I keep playing is my guild. I really like the people I'm around with and it's freaking fun to play with them it doesn`t matter if we do mythics or just BGs or open pvp it's just fun to play this game with these dudes and it's the major reason I'm still playing wow.
Legion is a decent expansion pack but WoW we used to know is dead. I don`t know if I will keep playing legion for the next couple of months or even until the end of this year but the more I play, the less I want to.
I don`t want to do x mythics just to push my gear until 900+ but no one wants to raid because everyone forgot how to communicate (except for my guildmates but we're just 3 people haha..), I don`t want to grind artifact power and I hate the order hall system with the retarded follower system and ..I could go on and on.
To sum up my thoughts I just wanted to say, that you`re not alone Peon. Perhaps we just grew out of the game but I know and you know that WoW was awesome and it still could be but too much has changed.
Anyway, sorry for the length I wanted to keep it short but..yeah anyway. awesome video ;)
I was going to write this long reply but will suffice to say that us older players are still around and yes nilla is remembered fondly , but we are also talking about a game originally going for a 18+ community and had much more free range( unless you got stuck in a port under a major city or mountain climbing).The environment was perhaps a bit different but then again you had people coming from games like evercrack who were used to grouping and such. Long story short nostalgia comes with rose colored glasses and lets us forget all the issues(blood plague is just 1 example), glitches and attitudes that still existed back then. Only real difference now is that well our kids play now lol

uhm..you misunderstood something here. The grinding aspect in legion feels just useless as shit. In Vanilla the grind was killing one mob after another to get a certain item, in Legion you grind through neverending hcs, mythic and mythic + dungeons just to replace that gear you got after a mythic +2 dungeon.
Vanilla was great because the atmosphere and the overall feel to the game was different.
Now the playerbase is hardly talking to eachother and you can actually beat the game without entering a single guild.
I myself play Legion but as I said the only reason is my guild. It sometimes doesn`t matter how grindy a game is if it's worth in the end and in vanilla this was the case for me. ;)
In nilla you would grind hours and hours to level or get an item and you still do be it a world drop or an instance in the end it's all the same you are still grinding for that something and trying to improve a character which by the next xpak will be useless in what 3 levels just to see all you did in reality changed nothing in the game except now ilvl. I played since nilla and raided nax just to see it return at level 80 into something that was a pale shade of what it had been. I saw Onyxia become a joke and hakar become well worthless. So yes looking back we all have rose glasses .

I recommend people make level 20 characters and lock them, let your subscription run out. They'll be free to play, stay in whichever guild you left them in, and they'll still be playable in PvP. Best part is you'll never have to re-gear them for the rest of your life. It's a nice remedy for former players who get the itch to play once in a while.

Lots of legitimate complaints. I never really did understand why people would play wow if they didnt enjoy End game raiding or PvP. But wow does have a lot to do outside of those at the start of expansions and during new patches which can be enjoyed as a single player-ish game I guess.
Also I've always hated gearing up in pvp. I love the new system in comparison.

Thats me. Up until WoD I'd NEVER taken even a break. With WoD I took 4 months off during HFC to play FFXIV for the first time. In Legion, I'm about ready to unsub with no other game lined up to take its place. Its definitely just wearing thin at this point.
Imo that is all because it's a "Theme Park MMO". What I want is a very hard time obtaining a certain piece of gear which will stick with me till endgame. Afterwards you can upgrade based on what you have, an endless grind to get a item which will be useless in a while is pointless for me. In WoW I had more fun Transmogging than PvP or PvE. But that's just me.
i've really only play vanilla and bc for years straight, haven't played any expansion that long. Mogs are the only thing that will stick. All of our 895+ items and legendaries will be useless in another 1. What we do get is perfecting our rotation and situation adaptation for the new spec updates.
This video answered my question of whether I should play WoW again or not. The comparison between sandbox and theme park MMO was the perfect way to explain it because I could never find what exactly it was that caused me to quit so many times. Excellent video. 10/10.

For me its Final Fantasy XIV :) that game showed me how wow is fucking boring. Because I dont like raiding and PVP is garbage, but in FF there is everysingle class you can play with only one character and even the professions are fun. Not like in WoW where you just click a button and you make a fucking hammer.

Budliky - Yeah Final Fantasy XIV is amazingggg. Played WoW for 13 years but with FFXIV, I got to level 60 and would do dungeons that made me feel left out and too far behind. As a black mage people would complain I'm not doing my spells right, etc. So I decided to stick with WoW because it's what I knew well.

There will never be another WoW. MMOs will hit a wall in the next few years and vanish for a while before they reemerge as games built for people with 12 hours a day to play.

I`m feeling the exact same way Peon but i still can`t quit, usually i have a break for a week or two and then come back again. I tried many games even the one that was my first mmo ever (OSRS) didn`t work , then i tried Black Desert and the game didn`t even opened . I was getting dced everytime i tried to log in due to a stupid cinematic. Then i said that i was done with mmorpgs and started playing CS :GO and Legue of legends played them for a few weeks got bored and here i am back to my warrior in World of Warcraft. I seriously need some help 10 years is enough of playing a game i even got 400 days on my warrior /played time WHAT? Am i an addict or something :( .

I actually hate gear being a factor in PvP. I should lose because I was outplayed not because the other guy just pressed his nose against a sandbelt for longer than I did, even if he sucks massively.
The problem is that gear still matters a LOT in PvP. Someone 20 ilvls above you is gonna wreck you completely. And at the same time they completely removed PvP gear. So if you want to seriously PvP you need to do high end PvE content to be viable, and most people PvP because they have no interest in the PvE content... Bring back PvP gear, or at least make the PvP drops be on the same level as raids, not 40 ilvls below them...
I think arena does a good job at balancing this out by only matching you with players who are around your skill level.
Of course having better gear makes you stronger, why else would it even exist?
I agree though it shouldn't be the sole determining factor. I still remember PvP in BC, I was able to defeat players with much better gear than me because I knew exactly where I had to stand, when which spells would do what, etc etc. I think the balance should be around 30% of your power is gear, 70% is knowing your class.
Haven't done any PvP since Wrath though. If I didn't love crafting and grinding so much I would probably stop playing altogether.

Great video! All of your points are reasonable while offering constructive critisms for the dev team to consider if they want to keep active subscribers. I personally stopped playing WoW during MoP for similar reasons. I have been playing Final Fantasy XIV for the past few years and I am beginning to feel the same tedious way again for majority of the reasons you explain in this video. What keeps me mostly interested in XIV is the dev team playing the nostalgia card by having fan favorite characters reintroduced into the game as NPC's, FATES, and boss/raid fights.
Just playing wow due to the polish and friendships made at this point. Until a game comes along that changes the current MMO status quo of "Single-player game with tacked on multiplayer and chatroom support." then there isn't much reason to change. Every other MMO I try just feels like I'm doing terrible grindy MMO quests while requiring me to talk to no one. :| Can't we just have an MMO where I need to talk and group with people? I feel like that can't be too hard to make.
most people online playing wow (myself included) are playing it because they are usually introverted and just want to stick to a small group of people that they somewhat know and requiring people to talk would turn many players away from the game for the reasons I just mentioned and some people wouldn't want to buy just to play the game and new players would be turned off by that such as younger players who just want to play with there parents sure the kid and parents can make alts but in single child and single parent homes that would be hard because most of the quest and gameplay would require for then two people to do and you can't report someone for foul language and expect them to get a perm ban raiding (except LFR) requires talking especially if its heroic or mythic raiding and in those guilds you can find plenty of people wanting to push high mythic + keys which also requires talking even then you can find groups in mythic + to talk to if you want new people to talk to

I always defend legion, but recently i've tried a vanilla private server and I can no longer defend legion. Wow is beyond repair, vanilla is so fun.. current wow is just different.. in a non-good way.
I started current wow in MoP, and i've never even leveled through westfall because i'm always level 15 by the time I do a few quest there and then I can just dungeon spam.

play a vanilla character just to level 10 and then you'll know.. It feels like a real rpg if you've ever played one, It's challenging, there's people everywhere.
there's always stuff to do, besides increasing your ilvl, raiding, and pvp... There's professions, leveling takes at least 500 hours by itself (and it's fun to do with people), Getting a blue or purple piece of gear for the first time is actually an accomplishment since you're walking around in grays and greens for 20 levels.
Current wow is still fun I guess.. but when I play on nostalrius it feels like a completely different game, like a real mmorpg..
Boots vanilla was broken on so many levels .... i will never ever have that feeling again which i had first time in elwyn forest or first time doing an instance or killing nefarian but that was because it was all new and fresh back than not because game was better ?
hardly any specc worked at all .... sone zones were either totally abandoned or so poorly designed. quests omfg i remember doing succubus quest on my human lock it had me go to barrens at level 20 go to fukin darkshore with no mounts and no flight path lol is that your idea of fun ???
jodhan79 I did that Quest like 2 weeks ago on Elysium and i have to admit that I prefer it do just going to the trainer. It might be hard because you have to run through an lvl 30 area with lvl 20 but the reward and satisfying feeling of accomplishment is just worth it.

Try the game "DDO" (Dungeon and Dragon Online) It's not like the dice game, it's more related to WoW, with slightly different game mechanics, and better graphics. You're items also don't get outdated, like the expansion packs do to your items when the come out. DDO has been going for 11 years strong since it's launch in 2006, and new expansions, only give you more quests to play, and more class specific gear. Instead of just completely out-dating your old gear, DDO creates gear, with more optimal stats for certain play styles. You can also multi-class in DDO. So if you want to be a healer, who can swing a greataxe, and be a melee too, you can certainly accomplish that. You should try it out, it sounds like it would fit your gaming style.
And the FTP version, gives you an easy 2-3 weeks of playable content. I totally agree! Im so SICK of grinding for EVERYTHING in WoW: Grinigion. That's all this expan is... Grin for fly, Grind for rep Grind for art weapon grin this grind that... Then after the expan is over; all your hard work is garbage.

I have been struggling with my decision to stop play wow for years now. I have not played it for years but I seem to come back every few years if a new expansion is released.Doubting to get back in but after a few hours or sometimes minutes I can't get over the dullness. I've watched a lot of videos whether to play or not play wow. But none of them put it as clearly as you did. I totally agree with your argument about the character progress being resetted and the raid being dull because the replaying aspect. I hope that Blizz makes a WoW2
you brought some very good points but my favorite was the one with the zones and how with each expansion you will spend all of your time just in a few areas. It would be amazing if Blizzard could make all of the zones relevant and worth traveling to. Nice work

fyi, mmorpg that doesnt do some fresh reset or something like that will die. new players can never catch up like that. theres a reason almost all of new mmorpgs are doing expansion things.
In vanila you couldn't clear Raid if you raid group is smaller then 25 people and not geared for raid- and this is like hight lvl top gear. And wipe always could happen.
The size thing is correct, the gear part is just untrue, most people were god awful at Vanilla not because they were bad, but because there was few information and WoW in Vanilla to Wotlk was the Facebook of gaming; everyone and their grandson's nephew's sister played it. This wasn''t a bad thing but seeing as many a private server's freshly released Naxx is just getting cleared within 2-4 weeks...Eh.
To the "high top gear", well it wasn't hard to get for some classes and god awful to get for others I'll give you that. Some pieces were crafted items like the Warr helmet, some were just loot from UBRS/LBRS/Strat/scholo, and some was just from some weird place like a lower-ish dungeon or cloth gear for a holy paladin which didn't matter anyway tbh beyond a bit of mana for OOC rezzing and buffs.
And "wipe always could happen" isn't new or old - of course you can wipe. Being able to die isn't really a thing any MMORPG of any age should be proud of, it should be normal. And in mythic difficulty raiding, the best guild in the world that plays the game for a living - something that wasn't very common in Vanilla either but I bet did happen a little here n there - spent HUNDREDS of wipes on current content.
I don't like the many difficulties but the hardest one is insanely challenging, requires lots of grinding and consumables and also means "bring the player AND the class" - justt like in Vanilla. Just harder.
And if you're talking TBC, it just so happens that all of this also applies to TBC except the gearing part which was a lot better and classes wore less weird gear. Paladins actually had logical gear now, which was super nice of Blizz.

I'm weird person, I use to find the game much more fun than today's expansions, that beautiful old school atmosphere that I use to dwell in is no longer existing in those new expansions, raiding seems dim and having no taste (to me), those mysteries are no longer present for me to go out, work hard in order to discover, this is only subjective and that's what makes me think it's quality is dying.
It is only mid tier game in Activision's stable to be sure. A lot of WOW players are in denial over it, but in the grand scheme of things, it is just not that important anymore. I also think that the moment to release a WOW2 has come on gone. That ship.sailed out to sea long ago.
This is why I play on a private server more.. I loved vanilla and bc and kinda wrath, but now it's a whole diff game. It really annoys me 😐

I have had to take multiple breaks while playing WoW. I am always so behind and can never catch up because I cannot dedicate as much time as I'd like. I am tempted to go back, but I know I'll only feel behind/stressed out about it. Although it gives me an excuse to level another toon or do throwback content.
just play casually if you don't have enough time and you won't fall behind because to you it wont matter you can play wow and have fun without having to invest a lot of time like mythic raiders do and many if then you would stop leaving the game and the caught up during the next expac and may join a normal mabey even dipping into heroic guild or a low cr PvP guild if that's what you like or a low geared mythic + guild with now set raiding time you could join a group as a pug or join a pug and the guild will always be doing something or join a casually guild with fun conversations in guild chat

To be honest, it's not 'their' fault. It's human beings as a whole. We take pleasure in improving things and improving things and soon enough we've become so technologically advanced that we replaced human interaction with robotic usage. For example/ running to dungeons and world pvp was replaced with one-click dungeon queue and pvp queue.

Nah, it's a fault of them listening to casuals qqing about not being able to raid without any effort or too lazy to form a dungeon group.

See, I've thought about this. World of Warcraft developers designed the game, so that the character must continue growing. Adding new expansion content, modifying class abilities, designing new monsters and attack mechanics.. these are all great things. I mean, if Blizzard only added new gear and places to explore / conquer then the game would be missing something. Revamping the system is actually a good idea to keep the game content fresh and the players excited.
The BIG DOWNFALL is when developers created content that lessened the difficulty, and created queue systems that discouraged world exploration ( sit in major cities and queue all day ), and finally, moved away from serious story line improvement by constantly leveraging old content from the Burning Crusade.
I didn't think they could make things worse after Warlords, then they did with Legion.

That's one of the things GW2 did well -- horizontal progression. The content can be challenging without forcing players to get tier after tier. I was away from the game for about a year, and came back to still having the BiS gear -- which allowed me to focus on masteries (a different form of progression), getting through the new story content, and diving right into raids and new fractals. The open world metas are still satisfying too.

This resonates so much with how I feel about WoW and why I've left. For the first time since 2006 I will not be coming back for the new xpac, I know it's just going to be another month or two of nostalgia and fun before I hit cap and get bored of it again. It's been fun, and I sincerely do hope when Classic launches I can get back into that, but time will tell
