That was great! I lived in L.A. and Northern California and saw it all. We moved to Florida few years ago, but I miss the rustic beauty of CA. I miss all the hiking in the mountain, all the natural beauty. It was a treat watching your road trip with your Dad.
I've lived in California for 25 years and have visited most spots on this list on various trips, but just recently I accidentally stumbled across the Elephant Seal view point on the way to Hearst Castle and I loved it - one of my favorite little surprises along the highway.
Twenty just isn't enough. 🙂 But, your picks are great. Over the years, I have driven every mile of Hwy 1 at least three times and some segments dozens of times. I live in Fresno, so the central coast gets more of my attention than either north or south. Here are a few other suggestions: LOTS of state parks along the way, most of which (if not all) are worth at least a short stop. Some of our favorites are Limekiln SP, Montana de Oro SP, the Butterfly Grove at Pismo State Beach (seasonal), and Point Lobos State Reserve. Pepperdine University in the spring. Perhaps the prettiest site for a college campus in California. We saw some waterpolo matches there during the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. We wanted gymnastics (like everyone else), but got waterpolo instead. Even so, we weren't disappointed. Many of the California missions are along or very near Hwy 1, including San Juan Capistrano, Ventura, Santa Barbara, La Purisima (Lompoc), San Luis Obispo, Carmel, Monterey, Santa Cruz, and San Francisco. For quirky: Gum Alley in San Luis Obispo. The very little town of Harmony. My wife like to stop to look at the arts and crafts. While see does that, I do close-up/macro photography in the gardens. More "urbany": Monterey Bay Aquarium, 17-mile Drive, Golden Gate Park, Glass Beach in Fort Bragg, the town of Medocino.
Agreed, haha that's why cheated and lumped things like lighthouses into one whole recommendation haha. Thanks for all the great tips and recommendations, you really left a lot of good ones!
How blessed both of you are to travel together and enjoy beautiful sights. I got back with my grandchildren driving from Monterey to Cambria. Breathless sights! Thank you for sharing😎
Beautiful! I missed trying out the clam chowders except for Boudin of course. Two days driving the PCH will not give justice to the beauty of this drive. Will give more days the next time. But i love the big sur, all the look outs, the bixby bridge, santa barbara, morro rock, solvang, cambria
It is so amazing that you and your dad got to do this. Now that my dad is gone I dont know what I would do for a trip like this with him, but I'm definitely happy for you guys!
Wow. This is the first time I've ever doing this on TH-cam. I watched this video and immediately rewatched it. I've never seen such stunning photography in my life. And the cuts are so tender and comforting, unlike the jarring cuts I see everywhere on YT nowadays. Great stuff! I have to see this channel.
Finally did this drive from San Diego up to NorCal in August 2020. It was absolutely incredible! Once you enter Big Sur the views are just breathtaking.
Just beautiful❣️. Your narration has always been clear, concise and emotive but it was lovely to hear your dad's voice also. The addition of his narrative was an enjoyable surprise. Keep it up. So nice to see such a warm father/son relationship. Love you guys 🤗🧡🌏
I think the San Mateo County to Santa Cruz segment is underrated. I enjoy that it is very scenic and relaxing, but the driving is much easier than windier segments
Good Job!!! I’ve lived the California coast my entire life…Starting in Redwood City & ending up in Sonoma County….Been the whole route through the years…a great reminder of many a trip through the years…
I drive Highway 1 whenever I get the chance. One recent trip to Sacramento from here in Dallas, I decided to fly into SFO, just so I could have "a little drive time" on Highway 1 and have lunch at Sam's Chowder House in Half Moon Bay. Been to Sam's at least 10 times now and it NEVER disappoints! Love that New England Clam Chowdah and Lobstah Roll! My favorite part of Highway 1? Monterey to San Luis Obispo. Look forward to returning in 2023 for another run on the PCH!! Thanks for the suggestions!! I'll have to check out the Splash Cafe soon!
The views of the coast are stunning. I drove part of this highway before, a few years ago, and your video brings back a lot of great memories. Likely one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. Thank you for taking us there, my friend 🤗🙏🏽
Lived in LA and drove PCH as often as possible when going north and then return...Some travel writers have suggested this drive and the AU Great Ocean Drive from Melbourne to coast are most beautiful drives on the planet for ocean lovers.
Hwy 1 is beautiful. Two weeks ago, buddy and I rode our motorcycles on the 1 all the way up to Leggit from the central coast. Best view ever. Its amazing how less traffic there was up north. Great video and how much it reminds me of my trip! 👍🏻
I've seen many of the places you mentioned, but not all - makes me want to take another trip down this amazing highway! Thanks for sharing this fantastic video!
Pacific Coast Highway: 20 Great Stops on the Road Trip. Interesting and engaging video. I support your video. Watched the video on Sep 6, 2022 very like. Thank you so much
You’re making great content! Keep up the good work. I’m glad you’re getting to do all these awesome trips with your pops. I’m re watching this video as I’ll be doing this road trip soon🎉
Thank you for doing and sharing this video. Soon I will be taking a month's long road trip and decided to take highway 101. I can't wait to see what I see!
Yaaay! I love you and dad trips. And I love that you both narrated. Beautiful shots. Great information. Thanks for bringing me some of the road trip I love. Haven't been able to do it in way too long.
Really cool to hear your dad doing some va work! My town is pretty close to Santa Cruz so I always love going there. Actually, I have a season pass to the Boardwalk haha. Thanks again for another great video!
Morro Rock/Morro Bay is my favorite summer vacation spot next to The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is the best bargain amusement park. Location is a ten, entertainment is a ten, atmosphere is a ten. Natural Bridges is my childhood hangout. The elephant seals of San Simeon are great. This is a great video. I have seen and done them all.
When I drove along the coast; I liked the little shops where you could buy homemade jewelry. I lived at Carlsbad with the beach across the highway from me. That was fun. And oh yes, loved the clam chowder places.
How lucky you are to have your dad as a travel companion, you like to tease him a lot but he probably doesn't mind he has a good nature. This was a fantastic trip up the beautiful California coast. Yes, northern CA coastline is so beautiful and very unusually different that southern CA. I also enjoy all nice places you two get to eat some pretty fab seafood and fish tacos, can't beat that! Thanks really enjoyed your trip, just fantastic, I wish I could travel it too! Haven't been up the coast in years. 🇺🇸🌹
Oohh, I just Tomales Bay area - went to a different fresh oyster place - lots of oyster companies along the strip there. I had smoked oysters and they were the best. A bit inland, there were also creameries where fresh cheese was made. Had a great time in the area. Love your California videos. So many hidden gems.
Wow! I'm blown away by the exceptional narration skills of your dad! What a pleasant surprise and awesome addition to this already excellent channel! Thanks for the upload!
I’m not a seafood fan, so i would change those spots for Davenport, 17 mile drive, Avila and Pismo Beach. Other than that couldn’t agree more with your choices
From the UK, driven San Fran to LA twice. Pleased to say we have stopped at many of your stops between those cities, but Devil's Slide was missed, and I think I saw this on your previous video. Definitely on the list should we do the drive again! Great video as always!!
I just watch this whole video, and it was amazing, I felt almost like I was there with you. Beautifully done, I enjoyed every minute of this trip. I love your trips, thank you for pointing out the beauty of California's P C H. Your dad's a real hoot, thanks again. From Michigan ❤😊
About time you put Dad to work, LOL! You both have great narration skills, so kudos to Dad for that. Another awesome and helpful video. Thoroughly enjoyed it...............as usual.
Elephant seals are more exciting to visit in the breeding season, like rainy February. Bull elephants can be bigger than pickup trucks. And the Santa Crux boardwalk was heavily featured in the 1987 movie The Lost Boys about vampires.
Flying back home from Phoenix to San Jose our plane really did a curve to head north and looking out the window from 20k feet in the air you can see Moro Rock:) nice
I just found you, I'll be doing this trip in a few weeks and am super excited so this is an awesome channel. I'll watch the longer video too, thank you for sharing your experiences. It'll be just me & my dog so, hopefully, there are plenty of dog-friendly activities.
Hey there, we watched a couple of your videos as a guiding line for our Cali trip and it helped a lot. Thank you for this =) ... just one thing: In n Out burger is crap. We gave it a try since you mentioned it in one of your videos but it was hands down the worst food we had on our trip
Thank you for the infos. Excellent narration for both of you! Do you guys reserve a hotel ahead or just pick any wherever you guys are done for that day.
We did Pfeiffer Falls back in 2012 and somehow ended on a side track. We met a botanist who told us that Bob Cats are common in the area we walked through 😳
Always love your vlogs, but in my 55 years living in the East Bay/Stockton area, I've not heard one person up here call CA-1 the "Pacific Coast Highway/PCH" north of Los Angeles County. I've always heard CA-1 called "One, "Highway One," or, less frequently, the "Coast Road" Wikipedia seems to support this, FWIW. Must be a SoCal thing!
Your dad should be an audiobook narrator with that great voice 👍
Ken Burns should give the man a call
AGREED!
haha I will have to tell him that he has a new calling in life!
Haha I was just thinking the same!
I agree he really does have a good commentary voice!
California Through My Lens: Your dad is pretty great at voice-overs! He should consider hosting a podcast or doing audio book narration! 🤠
haha I will let him know!
That was great!
I lived in L.A. and Northern California and saw it all. We moved to Florida few years ago, but I miss the rustic beauty of CA. I miss all the hiking in the mountain, all the natural beauty. It was a treat watching your road trip with your Dad.
Need your dad to start a book reading channel, I’d listen all day 😭
haha I will let him know 😂
Enjoy every moment you can with your dad believe me. Also you guys are a great team
This video is just brilliant. Visuals, writing, voice-overs, pace, presentation ... it's all just perfect. You guys have outdone yourself again.
Really appreciate the kind words!
I've lived in California for 25 years and have visited most spots on this list on various trips, but just recently I accidentally stumbled across the Elephant Seal view point on the way to Hearst Castle and I loved it - one of my favorite little surprises along the highway.
It is such a fun stop, I am glad you found it!
Ooh, I stumbled upon it while drive around Pismo. Haven't been to Hearst Castle, on my list along with the Mission there.
Where is the elephant seal view point?
@@californiathroughmylenswhere is the elephant seal view point?
I love the inclusion of Pops in the narration. Great idea!
Thanks so much!

How blessed both of you are to travel together and enjoy beautiful sights. I got back with my grandchildren driving from Monterey to Cambria. Breathless sights! Thank you for sharing😎
We have a great time and have gotten to do a lot of really fun trips!
I'm doing this drive in October so this video is a huge help. I didn't know about Devil's Slide but it looks like a must see.
Beautiful! I missed trying out the clam chowders except for Boudin of course. Two days driving the PCH will not give justice to the beauty of this drive. Will give more days the next time. But i love the big sur, all the look outs, the bixby bridge, santa barbara, morro rock, solvang, cambria

Great video, PCH / SR-1 is my happy place, so many memories from over the decades
So glad you have such fond memories!
very nice thank you

I agree with you. The narration, content and videography is on point
Love all your videos and your awesome relationship with your dad…I wanna do the same thing with my son when he’s older
Finally did this drive from San Diego up to NorCal in August 2020. It was absolutely incredible! Once you enter Big Sur the views are just breathtaking.
My husband and I love your videos. This is how we plan our vacations 😁
👍🏼 your pops voiceover was awesome, definitely would welcome more of that.
Good to know!
I spent a week there, and it remains an unforgettable memory.
Spectacular scenery, all places I wish I could see some day

I really love this road trip. That has inspired me to travel there with my wife.
Just beautiful❣️. Your narration has always been clear, concise and emotive but it was lovely to hear your dad's voice also. The addition of his narrative was an enjoyable surprise. Keep it up. So nice to see such a warm father/son relationship. Love you guys 🤗🧡🌏

Our family loves your videos. So fun to hear your dad’s voice over! Great job.

Pops narrating parts of the video, the best surprise ever!! ✅✅✅✅✅✅🙌🏼
@Violet BF Thanks so much!
You're the best!
Good Job!!! I’ve lived the California coast my entire life…Starting in Redwood City & ending up in Sonoma County….Been the whole route through the years…a great reminder of many a trip through the years…
This is a great summery view of of PCH. Your dad's comments were straight out of a travel documentary, which it was!
haha he uses bigger words than I do 😂
One of the most awesome drives in this country. Every spot is my favorite spot. Oregon has those rock arches, too, off the coast.
What a soothing voice your dad has .i thoroughly enjoyed your 7 day trip along PCH .so many good hikes and good and crisp editing .
Great work

Hey Josh this was a great video I still haven’t made the drive on Pacific Coast Highway all the way up to Santa Cruz or beyond
How fun!!
Doing a mini version of this hitting coffee houses along the coast from Sausalito to Santa Barbara. ☕️😊
You & your dad have great nature narrator voices!!
The views of the coast are stunning. I drove part of this highway before, a few years ago, and your video brings back a lot of great memories. Likely one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. Thank you for taking us there, my friend 🤗🙏🏽

Looking forward to seeing the full trip!
I have followed a few videos from your channel. Very nicely presented!
I drove just a few miles down the PCH from San Francisco and found that short segment stunning.
Thanks Gents - always a treat to see CA through your trips & tips X O California
You bet! Glad you enjoy it
My husband and I are building a tiny cottage at Timber Cove on PCH. Thank you for another wonderful video! 🥰
That's awesome!
I love dad’s narration!!! 😍
Fantastic video indeed ! Thank you both for it

This is a great travel guide!!!

I find so many new things every time I go!
Always amazing places Josh. Your dad was a great treat as well. The best TH-cam channel for sure so keep up the great work!!
Highly recommend you consider visiting Limekiln state park with its many redwood trails. Simply gorgeous.

Yes!! Love the pops voice over!
Glad you liked it!
I wouldn't mind pops telling me a goodnight fairytale. He's got a talent for storytelling. And the voice required.
Your "pops" did such a great job narrating!
You guys did a good job. Enjoyed watching it!
Thank you for doing and sharing this video. Soon I will be taking a month's long road trip and decided to take highway 101. I can't wait to see what I see!
Natural bridges ( Bridges) yes there used to be two there, memories visiting the park years ago. Anyone have pictures of the two arches?
Love Morro Bay..we had family living there in the late sixties and into the seventies! In those days it wasn’t as crowded as it is now.
Yaaay! I love you and dad trips. And I love that you both narrated. Beautiful shots. Great information. Thanks for bringing me some of the road trip I love. Haven't been able to do it in way too long.
So glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for this video. Your Dad has an awesome voice! I look forward to your next video!
Love to hear your dad’s voice! Nice touch. Not that we don’t love your voice, of course.
😊 thank you
Beautiful! I hope to do a PCH road trip one day!
I hope you can as well!
Loved the dad narrating. Love this channel. Always look forward to your videos.

I pretty much say the same thing every time. Love your videos.

Hi, in the process of planning our trip. Would you recommend driving south from San Francisco to LA or vice versa?
Great video, great visuals & great narrations, would request for a similar video about Lake Superior or Lake Michigan or Lake Huron. Thanks
I’ve tried the chowder at Splash Cafe. It’s good. My favorite chowder in a bread bowl is at Ideal Bar and Grill in Santa Cruz.
Perhaps it's in your full video, but one of my favorite spots on the PCH is Point Lobos south of Carmel. Blessings, Glen
Well narrated, and well done. Like usual. Great content.
Much appreciated!
About time you put Dad to work, LOL! You both have great narration skills, so kudos to Dad for that. Another awesome and helpful video. Thoroughly enjoyed it...............as usual.
❤😊 this is a long awaited joy
Elephant seals are more exciting to visit in the breeding season, like rainy February. Bull elephants can be bigger than pickup trucks. And the Santa Crux boardwalk was heavily featured in the 1987 movie The Lost Boys about vampires.
Flying back home from Phoenix to San Jose our plane really did a curve to head north and looking out the window from 20k feet in the air you can see Moro Rock:) nice
Love this. Great intro, perfect for planning an itinerary. Great that you and your dad both narrated - sounds like it was a fun trip.
I just found you, I'll be doing this trip in a few weeks and am super excited so this is an awesome channel. I'll watch the longer video too, thank you for sharing your experiences. It'll be just me & my dog so, hopefully, there are plenty of dog-friendly activities.

Heading to your part of the world in March! - really appreciate your videos, they are excellent - thanks!
SO awesome, I hope you have a great time!
Great job Pops !
