California Coast - via Pacific Coast Hwy & 101

A tour of the California Coast by Highway 101 and the Pacific Coast Highway. We start on Highway 101 at the Oregon Border and continue to Crescent City where it becomes the Redwood Highway.
We then follow it through the Wine Country of Sonoma County and into San Francisco across the Golden Gate Bridge. Highway 101 becomes the Bayshore Freeway as we travel across the Silicon Valley to San Jose.
We the move to the Pacific Coast Highway just south of Monterey and follow across the Bixby Creek Bridge through twisting, cliff hanging curves with a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean. At San Luis Obispo Route 1 and Highway 101 join again as we travel down the best Surfing areas of the country along the PCH.
At Oxnard we follow Route 1 across the beaches of LA, Santa Monica & Venice Beach. South of LA, we travel through Long Beach, Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach and ending at Capistrano Beach. We then go back to LA and follow highway 101 ending at I-5 & I-10.

We visited the 21 California Missions. Beautiful.

I live near Janepero Serra in Ventura.. did I spell that right?, I have no glasses on.. lol... I've only visited a few but that seems like an amazing trip
More than a few surpises at our Missions.
While in The Military and training at Camp Roberts, by Paso Robles.
We did a lot of scouting around.
At Mission San Miguel, a tourist had dicovered a find, an old grip and top of a sidearm.
My Sargent, who is a very learned weapons expert, looked at it and declared it to be an old cheapo pistol from a lesser known name...but he nailed it, as past visitors from Camp Bob had declared the same more than a few times earlier. And that's what the Mission Docent told us...very, very cool!
Angie Thompson they are amazing. You would need to drive to the ones in the middle of no where to get that old times atmosphere of the missions. Overall had a great experience learning and seeing what each mission went through.
Big Smoke Guitar That’s a amazing to find artifacts from those days. Didn’t find any myself, but I’m sure each mission has plenty more to be discovered around it’s grounds

I just did this drive from Washington to Oregon and then California. It was a long drive but it was beautiful and worth it.
I’m living in Los Ángeles from 1999 and in 2005 I went to sequoia national park and it was a beautiful experience, and in 2018 to San Francisco, I love to California 💕💕💕

I did this road trip in 2019 when life was still normal. Hotels in Monterrey are crazy expensive. This road trip is a must if you have the ability to, it’s truly beautiful.

Ran it commercially, as a citizen and in the Military.....One of the most beautiful drives in our Country.
I've lived on Hwy 1 for the last 40, at the top of the hwy to the junction of 101, in Leggett. MENDOCINO COUNTY. 💓💓💓

I drove up the coast about 5 yrs ago...most beautiful place I have ever been...I drove from venice beach to santa barbara and had lunch on the pier, it was the most amazing trip of my life so far.
it gets better from pismo beach to monterey

I miss NorCal, it is so beautiful..my husband is from there and we currently live in SoCal...(yes we go to Burning Man, its a NorCal thing😉) we used to drive up that way all the time San Jose, Novato, San Francisco.... and due to the shut down and just life in general..it's been so long since we've been that direction.. I miss the Redwoods and Santa Cruz.
On the SF side of the bridge there is 3 options for routes, don't go the way he did through downtown if you are wanting to pass through quickly. Either quickly exit right and head the scenic route towards Ocean Beach or for even faster take the next exit to go along 19th Ave, both will put you closer to Hwy 1. First taking you to the Great Highway then connect to Skyline Blvd then 1, the 2nd being 19th Ave turning into Hwy 280 then take the 1 exit in Daly City to head up hill then down to Pacifica.....I live near Pacifica/SSF/San Bruno
yep you are correct and that would be the more scenic route as well, great advice.
I live in Cali for many years now. Right off PCH, north of Santa Barbara. I have gone up and down the coast many times, and everytime I feel so alive and so lucky. It is by far the most beautiful coast line I have ever seen, and I have been all over the world. You can never be bored of California.

yep, Oxnard is a great city, the whole Oxnard, Ventura area, although lately Ventura being alittle too restrictive with the shut down.

Does anyone remember the short run TV series “Then Came Bronson” ? It was filmed along the California Coast and in the opening scenes of every episode it featured the Bixby Bridge. There’s a few episodes of that series here on TH-cam. It aired in the 1960’s.
Great show starring Michael Parks on a Harley. I have the pilot/movie on DVD.

In 1983,that time I was 26,I tripped from Seattle to San Diego by Greyhound bus.I visited cities of Redding and Santa Maria.Cities made me beautiful memories.I am 65 now,I wanna visit there again until I die from Tokyo,Japan.

Back in 2016, I rented a Ford Mustang convertible and drove from LA to San Fran along PCH1. I felt free.

I've been on these very routes so many times & it never gets boring,.
Best solo road trip I've taken was pacific coast highway. It was beautiful and so amazing. Take it when you can. Slept on the beach so many times and had a blast.
Any beach spots you'd suggest? Going on a solo trip soon & looking for good spots to camp free, preferably on the beach.

Live in Lompoc since 1982, been all up and down this route numerous times. Love it here, always tell everyone you don't sweat here unless you want to...but as I get older, I'm finding it a little chilly year round.

I live in the Tampa Bay area and have been wanting to see the west coast for a while. We have beautiful beaches here in Florida but they have cliffs and different sights to see over there. From wine country to the Mexican border and everything in between. Wow. Thank you for this. My husband and I are planning the trip in the nest year or so.
Yep the nice thing about CA is the Rocky Cliffs coastline, probably alittle more scenic than the flat beaches of FL.

Yep CA has good point and bad point, but many people fail to see the good. San Diego is one of the better cities of CA.
