My mom passed away last June. Some of my happiest memories of our time together was the last trip we took, on the East Side. I pushed her wheelchair along the trail at Convict Lake, along the shore at Mono Lake, and down close enough to Hot Creek to smell the sulphur. She loved the views of the Sierra and the aspens flowing red and gold down the ravines. It’s wonderful you’re sharing this beautiful place with your dad. It’s wonderful he’s in good shape and healthy! BTW, your dad’s shots at the lake are EPIC. Much love.
More than anything else cherish the times spent with your dad. Tomorrow isn't promised and you'll forever have the memories made. Who's cutting onions in the comment section!?
I totally agree! As soon as he said he was exploring with his dad I wanted to watch the entire video! It’s not everyday you see a TH-camr do things alongside his dad! I love this
I've been traveling 395 for 65 years. A couple places to check out are 1) Mahogany smoked meats on your right going north out of Bishop. They are known worldwide. 2) Going north from Convict Lake you will see a small green church on the right. Turn in there and go to the 3rd cattle crossing and make an immediate right.. Take the small road to the end where there is a parking area. A short walk down a ranger built trail and you will find Wild Willy's hot spring in the middle of a meadow with an awesome view of the sierras. Also, if you want a fantastic night view while in Mammoth, drive past the gondolas at the main lodge to just before the ranger gate that leads down to Devils Postpile. Take a right turn down a small road that leads to a parking area with a 360 view overlooking the canyon and the Mineretts. Spectacular views of stars and many times shooting stars..You can also get those views from Horseshoe lake which is above Lake Mary. If you are in the mood for a 10 day hike ( maybe less depending on your pace) try the North Lake to South Lake loop It goes up to the JMT up through Evolution valley to Muir Pass where the Muir Hut is then down to South Lake via Bishop Pass.
"So juvenile." The highlight of this video was when you tossed that little snowball and your "pops" didn't even flinch. The beauty of nature, your goal and efforts to capture it on film and the precious time spent with your dad brought a tear to my eye and a smile to my face. Excellent video.
Ive been going up 395 for almost 50 years and it is still the same as it was I took my family camping up there when they were young 4 or 5 times a year we all have fond memories of camping and fishing up there. I dont live down there anymore and i miss it a lot
I think it is super that you took this trip with your dad. The bonding that is done on a trip like this cannot be overestimated. They are memories of a lifetime. Happy for you and your dad.
I have frequented 395 for the past 30 years, exploring and fly-fishing in the fall and winter. Unlimited things to see and always something new on every trip. Copper top barbeque is the some of the best in the country. Will not disappoint!!! I have been all over the west and 395 is my favorite drive ever.
Always cherish all the times you spend with your dad. It's always heartwarming watching your videos with your dad because I won't be able to do it anymore . Keep up the good work, Josh. Love them all 🥰
Your love and enthusiasm for the outdoors is obvious. Thank you for taking "Pops". (I am a Pops too) I really like Hwy 395 from Kramer Jct north. Have traveled and camped all over there, and many other desert places, since the 1950's.
@@californiathroughmylens - how dare you! Nothing is better than Hwy. 5, where you can see both the Coastal Mountains and the Sierras! You can fall asleep at the wheel, and still be on the road when you wake up! 😜
Great video Josh! Thanks for the shoutout and say hello to Jeff for us! Next time we’ll have to go up that dirt road past the visitors center. Also I’ve just added North Lake to our list. Wow what a beautiful place. Cheers man!
I have to say your TH-cam channel is my wife and I's favorite. You have given us so many places to visit out west which she writes down. The difference between your videos and others we watch is how your dad and your use of hotels on road trip versus an RV. As much as we would like to get a RV (we tent camp), you give us a reason to not be in such a hurry. Your dad's time lapse video was awesome!! Please continue with the great videos!!
Your Dad's time lapse of the sunset was EPIC. I noticed that Sabrina Lake had receded quite a bit due to the drought. I wonder what it looks like now May 2022.
I think it is cool that you are doing videos with Pops. I suspect most younger folks wouldn’t want to be within 100 miles of their father at any time! I am sure your dad appreciates you spending time with him! Like others have said, time is precious... spend as much time as you can with those that you love.👍. By the way Pops time lapse shot at North Lake was epic...I think you found a new camera man!😀
Awesome Pops! Everytime we go snowboarding in Mammoth i refuse to go to the top because of the gondola ride. The massive gap to the bottom has me soo scared...
I absolutely love how the two of you get along. You still act Like father and son. I’m going to bring my eight year old son in couple of weeks on this trip thanks to you.
Your dad is a youtube natural and yes that was an epic time lapse. I have been wanting to take a drive up 395 ever since I now know people that live in Bishop and Ridgecrest. Thank you for the awesome video and virtual tour!
In 1976 I hitchhiked 600 miles on the northern leg of 395 from Pendleton, Oregon through Lakeview, Oregon, Susanville, California and onto Reno. It was one of the most remote places that I had ever been, and one of the most beautiful.
It’s been a looong time since I’ve been to Rock Creek, but my dad and I used to take weekend trips to fish there all the time! No particular trail or anything that I can remember by name, but we loved walking it and spending the time fishing and just enjoying the camping!
So great to see you enjoying life with your father; cherish the moments. My father was the foundation of my life and every day, I thank the Almighty for blessing me with the moments I was able to spent with him.
395 is one of the best roads anywhere - desert on the east side, forests, lakes and mountains on the west. I've traveled there many times over the years, every trip one to remember. If you're coming from northern California I highly recommend Tioga Pass for a dramatic entrance to the unique world of Highway 395.
When my wife and I first got together, we backpacked north lake to south lake, 56 miles and took our time. The best 7 days ever. I had to bring my dad, we fished rainbow trout in convict lake and stayed a week at various Mammoth hot springs, Whitmore 💚
Here is a "shout out" to your dad for doing Mammoth Mountain and also the time lapse at the end was good! I bookmarked the Copper Top in Big Pines and will have to try it sometime. I used to go to the Merry Go Round in Lone Pine, a decade + ago, but it seems to have been bought out. I still might try it because they still sell a steak dinner. Thank you and am looking forward to the one just on the Bristol Cone Pines!!!
I love this series. I lived in mammoth for 10 years and grew up going to mammoth every year. I know every curve and bathroom on 395! 🤓I miss the mountains. Thanks for sharing your adventure.
Such wonderful times that you have shared with your dad and us on this trip, The Rte 66 road trip and others. Thank you!!! You are a gifted film maker and editor!!! I know it's not as easy as it looks to take a LOT of footage and turn it into an entertaining 16 minute film!
Great job. This is your best!!! I have enjoyed your Catalina Island and Palm Springs. Fond wonderful romantic memories twenty years ago. Great to see you and your Dad enjoy your journey.
Really appreciate the enthusiasm your dad and you have for driving and hiking through what I consider one of the most beautiful places on earth. Good job!!!
One of my favorite and prettiest hikes I have ever experienced starts from Mosquito Flats. The wild flowers and all the lakes is just amazing. And I have hiked in Europe as well and that area is in my top 5 area to hike.
Amazing. I wish I did this when my dad was alive. My son is 10 and I took him out the bishop creek for the first time. We will be making more memories like this. Thanks for the videos and can’t wait to see more.
My family took three trips to Reno from San Diego on US 395 in the mid-1960s. Those were the most memorable trips we ever took - your video help me relive those trips. Dad was in the Marines so we were able to use the camping facilities at the Marine Corps MWTC in Bridgeport, went fishing at Secret Lake, and during subsequent trips we camped using shelter halves along the West Walker River. We didn't get to see the Bristlecone pines but did get to stop at Bodie. At some point I plan to come out to California to make that trip again. Pops' time lapse at Sabrina Lake is awesome!
I've always wanted to do this type of trip with my Dad up to the Pacific Northwest, but now, unfortunately, he's too old to do it. Love seeing you and your Dad able to make these trips.
Great timelapse video! I enjoy seeing these less traveled roads and stops of interest. Thank you for another wonderful video, you are very well spoken and it's always a pleasure to watch you and your dad together.
Very cool to see Mammoth again, thru your lens. My buddies and I last visited there in 1999 attending the Mammoth Mountain Grundig World Cup mountain bike race. We took the gondola up to the top and rode our bikes back down the mountain. The hotel we stayed at in town we hard a large brown bear visit our outdoor trash can every night. Hard to believe it's been 25 years ago now! This brings back memories!
AWESOME! Thank you both so much. I cannot do these trips with my dad anymore (rip), but your adventure is an inspiration for me to get out there with MY SON!! Excellent Adventure! and not too far away. Thank you again!!!

Pops should have made his own snowball and clobbered you, just to get even for the gondola ride.

Hwy 395 is a favorite my wife and mine. When heading north from the San Diego area we always take Hwy 395 over I-5 or Hwy 99.
Agreed, it is a lot better then I-5 for sure
No traffic and such a beautiful route with views. Just drove it yesterday from Lake Tahoe.
