On Mario Kart Wii, I mained a bike with max speed/min acceleration and handling. It took hundreds of hours of practice, but once I mastered the tracks, I consistently lapped the AI. Speed is definitely underrated, and acceleration doesn’t matter if you use speed boosts intelligently.
Unpopular opinion, i think the best stat in the game is the "getting hit by random green shells" stat, you wanna have that at the minimum. after that, it's all ok

That or the Super Horn frequency stat. You usually try to swap Red and Blue Shells for it.

There are actually a bunch of cool and unique combos you can see at 9:00. The Green Inkling Girl with Standard ATV and Leaf Tires is especially drippy, and gets the speed boost for colour coordination!

Honestly I really enjoy seeing the juxtaposition of how acceleration is great for 1st place and speed is great for last. It sort of shows why the meta combos currently are yoshi+1-2 classes of heavier characters paired with high acceleration/mini turbo karts.
Also it's honestly impressive how even without shortcuts the mushrooms seem exponentially better because they're on such a high speed combo.
Oh yeah mushrooms are insane with this combo. No other combo wins on peach gardens after getting hit by the red shell. I felt like I was getting 3rd at best and then Morton just did speedy things

Yeah, the 4% faster thing really matters over a long period. Think of it this way, for every second you travel, your opponent will go 1.04 times as far. If both racers are identical, then for every 25 seconds, the 4% boost will contribute enough to gain an extra second over the other racer. Multiply that by a whole race, say 3 minutes, and you have a full 6 seconds or so of lead. Now because one racer is faster, their paths, drifts, and item usage will be different but in general that slight boost is significant over time, much like how coins work.
That's if you don't get hit, which you will. Acceleration is THE most important stat, followed by MT. Speed is the 3rd most important

Honestly, the only real way to measure how important acceleration is is play in a stacked worldwide, but you play a good combo but remove all of the acceleration from it (by modding or something idk), that way you get the mini turbo and good stats without the acceleration. That way you're only isolating the acceleration stat, rather than other states affecting your results.
Also, I feel a lot of the bad things that happened in this video were because of your low mini-turbo and handling.

I would never consider any combo unusable in the modern Mario Kart games.
I feel you when I play slower acceleration character combos for fun like with the Metal characters and Bowser. I’m so used to playing balanced mini-turbo combos that stepping outside my comfort zone takes some getting used to.
Though in general, with smart item and racing play, you can place high with even the most suboptimal combos as you’ve demonstrated.
Maybe I can experiment playing with more high Speed and maybe low acceleration combos like the badwagon after watching this video.

This feels like it's the gamblers combo. When you do well, you feel the thrill and do really well, but get bad luck and it's last place for you buddy

I personally find speed to be a useless stat, with acceleration being maxed out as very strong
For casual or low to mid level play, acceleration is definitely the way to go. Once you get better at comebacks you will value having some more speed!
Also to add to this, when I first played online my main was baby rosalina + biddybuggy (lowest speed, max accel and mini turbo). When I switched to a "better" combo, I did worse. That's because my defensive tactics and bagging skill were very weak compared to my frontrunning skill.
But once I reached about 10k VR, I started doing better with king boo

Little idea for a challenge, I was a big wii player back in the day and for that motion controls have been burnt into me. Maybe have a challenge where you're purely restricted to motion controls and use a difficult-to-control combo, with stats like low handling and traction or inside drift. Also top quality video man, you keep it up!

Honestly I feel like people genuinely underestimate how good max speed combos can be so much in this game, it’s just that they’re pretty difficult to use and getting used to the bad acceleration and poor handling when you’ve been using a high mt combos and attempting to do lots drift or snaking with it which is not worth it for speed combos. To me, the max speed combo is probably one of the top best combos in the game alongside high mt combos but is definitely the hardest one to use out of the bunch but it’s incredible when you use it properly!
The last game you played is probably one of the cleanest frontrunning gameplays against pros I've ever seen

I love the 200 cc version of that rainbow road where it's legitimately faster most of the time to have the steering assist on with a high speed combo, really interesting part of the game.

Before I understood the strategy of bagging, I was one of those who put a combo like this as "worst in the game". I'm definitely not in that camp anymore.

I don't have any way of knowing if this is true or not, as I have not yet had the opportunity to test it against live competition, but I think a great bagging combo (which is "mid" at best when not bagging) would be King Boo (or Link or Rosalina, as they share stats) in the Tanooki Kart (chosen over Koopa Clown and Master Cycle Zero for the Invincibility boost, but Invincibility has minimal impact on bagging so either of these other options are every bit as viable) with Hot Monster tires (with Ancient and the regular Monster tires being alternatives here) and the Waddle Wing glider (with the Super Glider and Hylian Kite being alternatives here). My idea is to increase Speed and Traction with more of an emphasis on Traction than Speed, and by focusing more on Traction, I also have more Mini Turbo than a "max Speed" combo. Acceleration on this combo is still bad, so some comebacks are too difficult to make, but I'll need to actually test it out before coming to a conclusion as to whether the combo is bad, mid, good, or great as a bagger. For now, it's still in the "theory" stage.

Traction helps on slippery tracks, but once you're in a star/bullet/mushroom then you get full traction anyway. I think traction is more important for frontrunning slippery tracks, but a lot of the slippery tracks are also good bagging tracks (cheese land, dry dry desert)
The 27:42 mushroom was bad, but honestly if i went more left i'd have such bad handling that i wouldn't be able to make it back to the right. I think i should have slowed down once i realized i lost my drift.

I knew that a Bullet and ⭐ help with Handling (primarily from watching your other videos), but this is the first I've heard of those items also boosting Traction and the first I've heard of a 🍄 boosting anything other than Speed. I learned something new today. Thanks for that as well. 😄
Let's just blame the mishap at 27:42 on the triple 🍌 the game gave you in front of the triple 🍄. That's just bad item luck, and the only way to avoid the ensuing mishap is to avoid the shortcut entirely, which is a bad idea on the final lap if you have any speed items (which, of course, the triple 🍄 is), but you didn't need me to tell you that.

Got two boomerang hits early on. Those _are_ hits by all means, though they’re only spin-outs as opposed to knock-overs.
A few more hits this race, though it was mostly just the one shock, which I would argue matters less because the top speed you’re trying to get back to is lower when small; also, everyone else got slowed too.
*SECOND RACE* (Tokyo Blur)
A single hit in total, and that was the one green shell trail which caused you to start doing some light bagging.
That was a proper hit, though it was the only one for the whole entire race.
*THIRD RACE* (Squeaky Clean Sprint)
You were not hit by a single attack (projectile) at all the entire time.
The only thing that hit you was, again, one shock, and you had just hopped on a glider at that point.

So I agree you didn’t get hit _zero_ times, but honestly, only the first race actually saw you getting seriously hit, and even that was no Mario Karting.
Still great comebacks though!
Nothing says good sportsmanship like seeing last place as "involuntary bagging" instead of losing. I wish we all could have such a good attitude.

Always been a speed main ever since the very beginning where I mained Bowser in Super Mario Kart for the SNES. It is just exhilarating when things line up for you and you either pull a huge lead or make a huge comeback.

Kind of reminds me of Bowser in the first Mario cart. Had horrible acceleration but the best top speed. You just had to hit like absolutely nothing all race to win.
This combo makes you FEEL miserable while you get first place.
for the longest time, i would use the f1 car with neon slick wheels and a glider that made my speed higher, didnt matter which one. I never realized that it was a "bad" combo because i had just gotten good at using it lol

It's kinda funny that I'm only getting recommended these videos after seeing posts about bagging getting nerfed and looking up "what is bagging?"
They're really fun to watch, but at the same time it's like peeking into a world that no longer exists.
theres a technique where you focus on gaining and maintaining speed. this technique when combined with inward drift and taking the corners tightly makes for a powerful combo technique with the biggest downside being difficult to master

Also 10:50 Proof you should always use your redshell exclusively to defend OR screw 2nd and 3rd - because then they will take all the future redshells except their own.

Hey Shortcat, i dont know if youre still checking comments but i really need to ask this. Ive been having a hard time playing this game online and it honestly hasnt been that fun for me.
I get frustrated because of Lag Trailing, and constantly being stuck in the pack, i also feel helpless and frustrated most games because theres too much going on and i never feel like i can reliably defend myself from the onslaught of constant shells and fireballs and what not. I rarely ever get a good spot.
Do you have any advice for me? Ive tried bagging but it never works reliably for me, because im just too unlucky for any bullet bills and i cant catch up because everyone in the back with me has the same stars and mushrooms. Its kind of like something you said in one of your other videos, "im not doing anything wrong, things just keep happening to me"
Hey Shortcat, I was wondering what the lowest / highest traction combos would be like. You could do a similar thing to the acceleration videos and compare the two to see the difference. It would also be cool if you explained the difference between traction and handling because a lot of people don't know the difference.
I believe squeaky clean is a hair faster if you trick off the drain cap instead of tricking into the basin

What if you do MAX acceleration bagging? Since the 3 wins at the start essentially came from unintentional bagging. I agree with you on the acceleration stat but since it's led to so much arguing it might be a good talking point
I did a little bit in my max mini turbo and max handling videos. it still can work on a bagging track, but it definitely does not work on most tracks.
idk about making a whole video on that, maybe in the future. as for the purpose of proving a point, i think the people who endlessly praise acceleration are probably also at a level where they think bagging is actually stupid and so losing while bagging wouldn't really prove anything

I dont go all in on this, but i usually run the terrible acceleration, higher speed karts, like PGP on Formula w/ slick wheels. I love the speed, and the acceleration doesnt matter if you just play well.
