    This One Take was filmed at #GRIDLIFE Motorsports and Music Festival, Gingerman Raceway, June, 2017. For more information about upcoming festivals visit: www.grid.life
    This 1968 Volvo Amazon is one of our favorite #Gridlife cars. Featuring a Mitsubishi 4G63 Turbocharged 4-cylinder engine from a 1991 DSM (In the video Matt incorrectly says it's from an Evo), a T-5 Gearbox from a Ford Mustang, and a Ford rear-end, this Volvo has what it takes to put down very strong lap times at Gingerman raceway, especially considering its age.

    brakes arent sketchy but can seem that way its called pad knockback under load during cornering the hubs flex causing the rotors to push the calipers pistons deeper into the bore which leaves extras space between the pads and rotors to be taken up on your next application of brakes. you pump them so you take up that space ahead of time so next time you brake you aren't scared or caught off guard by that first initial press doing nothing.....pretty much standard with most vintage race cars and just about any wilwood setup over 13 inches i've encountered especially common on ford rear ends with large brakes. you can add residual pressure valves or make sure the master is never lower than the calipers (only applys to floor mounted masters) this will make it less noticable but doesn't eliminate it we had problems with it on our ousci chevelle last year

    • @carlogren8902
      @carlogren8902 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I was thinking the master is probably mounted in the wrong place and lacking residual pressure valves, too.

    Great video Matt. Back in the early '80s my uncle drove a Volvo 120. It was modified for light auto crossing but I don't think he ever did, lol. I remember my grandfather rebuilding the transmission one weekend and my uncle driving it back to college that Sunday night. I love the odd balls, keep them coming.

  • @roochiecooch
    @roochiecooch 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Reminds me of the first time I found out I had bump steer in my 80's celica build coming down from Big Bear. It was then that I realized maybe I shouldn't have done away with the power steering just yet, the wheel would get yanked so hard already under compression and then hitting uneven surfaces in corners, it would throw my hand off completely. Just lucky enough to where I was able to keep one hand on and not die. I thought it was just a corner thing, maybe I hit a bad pot hole I didn't see. Then later after inspecting the suspension realized the ball joints were at a really strange angle and not an ideal one. It was a handful, scary and a hell of a memory all at once. Seeing you try and tame that amazon really was fun. Not every track or canyon build will be perfect, but if you drive them the best you can, they can still hold their own. Props for not backing off too much Matt, it's a fine balance between pushing it, and wrecking it.

      TheGryf0xxx I'm not sure if it's his brakes or if he has very aggressive track pads that need a lot of heat to perform well. I would think that mustang brakes would be more than enough stopping power for such a light car and he did say that there wasn't any fading. Maybe Matt will get on here & clarify.

      It's a little sad he doesn't give the context of pumping brakes up before a braking zone or after one. You'll see the same habit in a Spec Miata series. Your braking will be crisper with a touch more heat in them because you're using race pads and as you heat up the race pads the bubbles you thought you bled out will collect in the worst places. Pumping helps keep the pressure up, it maintains heat, and it gives you a little input where you stand before you have to rely on them.
      Anyway, this is a race car that's using race pads instead of more surface area to generate grip. You need heat to make them work and heat creates bubbles so a tap or pump check is a must. Every instructor I've ever had did this as habit I noticed be it an M3 or a Spec Miata.
      Farrah, deal with it, adjust accordingly, at least the guy let you know what was what!

    The engine looks to be from a 1g DSM and has the coil pack ignition mod. Bet it was super sketchy when the boost came on!!!!
