850 WHP 1991 Toyota MR2 by ATS Racing - One Take

  • This 1991 Toyota MR2 is the development car for ATS Racing's entire catalog of Toyota MR2 possibilities. Featunring a "5SGTE" Turbo 4-cylinder engine, so named because you use the MR2's cylinder head with the block of a 1998 Camry and a stroker crank, this MR2, depending on the desired application, will run between 30 and 45 PSI of boost through a Precision 6265 Ball Bearing Turbo, making a peak 1000 HP at the crank.
    Unfortunately this video ends with the car having a bit of a crap-out on me, but fear not! It was only a blown fuse, a 20+ year old, stock fuse at that, and the car was running fine again 20 minutes later.
    Special thanks to Aaron and the guys from ATS Racing for this opportinuty! Got an MR2, Lotus, Ferrari, Corvette, or anything else that needs a Turbo? Hit up ATS Racing: www.atsracing.com
    Special Thanks to Eagles Canyon Raceway for letting me film! For track day or membership information: www.eaglescanyo...
    Special thanks to Mason Bleadsell and Thomas Le for the cover photos and drive-by shot assistance. www.bleasdellph...
    Full Build Sheet - 1991 Toyota MR2
    • 1000hp (872rwhp, detuned to 820rwhp for the street)
    • “5SGTE” - NOT a Honda K-swap!
    • ATS Racing 2.3l stroker block with proprietary half-fill
    • ATS Racing custom ground crankshaft
    • Pauter connecting rods
    • ATS Racing heavy duty Wiseco pistons
    • ARP L19 headstuds with Hux Racing cylinder head inserts
    • ATS Racing custom CAD-designed MLS headgasket
    • GSC high lift cams, shimless bucket conversion, and other valvetrain parts
    • ID2000 injectors, twin Walbro fuel pumps, boost-a-pump to run 16V
    • ATS Racing top-mount manifold with Precision 6265 ball bearing turbo
    • 46mm wastegate, runs between 30 and 45 psi of boost
    • ATS Racing trunk-mount intercooler
    • Custom straight runner intake manifold
    • ECUMaster EMU standalone ECU tuned by ATS Racing
    • Quaife LSD in stock transmission
    • ATS Racing upgraded axle CV joints
    • ClutchMaster FX700 twin disc clutch
    • KVR/Wilwood front brake kit, 93+ rear brakes
    Build notes from Aaron at ATS Racing:
    This engine is usually referred to as the 5SGTE because it uses the 3SGTE MR2 cylinder head with a 5SFE block (from a 1998 Camry). This block has been half filled with a ATS Racing proprietary technique that maximizes strength and minimizes the fill’s impact on the cooling capacity (this is Texas, we have 100+ degree summers). The crankshaft has been custom ground by ATS Racing for 95mm of stroke, giving us 2.3 liters of displacement (an original turbo MR2 is 2.0 liters). The rods are Pauter and the pistons are custom ATS HD pistons made for us by Wiseco. The head gasket is metal (ATS) and the (ATS) head studs are made of a material called L19. It’s STRONG but highly reactive. Don’t touch them with your bare hands.
    The cylinder head has oversized intake and exhaust valves, GSC high lift 274 cams, shimless bucket conversion, and GSC valve train components. There is some mild porting, but the heads flow really well right out of the box.
    The fuel system uses Injector Dynamics ID2000 injectors, twin Walbro fuel pumps, and a boost-a-pump that ups the voltage to 16 volts when under some serious turbo boost.
    The turbo kit is an ATS top mount manifold with a Precision 6265 ball bearing turbo and 46mm wastegate. It runs between 30 and 45 psi of boost.
    The trunk is filled with a huge ATS intercooler and a custom straight runner intake manifold.
    The ecu is an ECUMaster EMU tuned by Scott McClendon of ATS Racing.
    The transmission is a rebuilt stock turbo MR2 but with a Quaiffe LSD and ATS CV joints in the axles. The clutch is a ClutchMaster’s FX700 twin disk.
    The suspension is new genuine Toyota struts with Eibach springs (I appreciate a comfortable ride).
    Front brakes are a KVR/Wilwood front brake kit, rears are 93+ MR2 Turbo
    The outside is mostly stock except for a Bomex front bumper, custom side vents, Aeroware rear spoiler and Tom’s scoop on the driver’s side, and some Volk Gram Light wheels with Mickey Thompson drag radials on the rear.

      Gabbiadini cheers mate, it’s actually running a forged build now and capable of 500whp when I upgrade the turbo to an EFR 7163. We are doing a re-review vid when I do this summer. Oh and the launch control now sounds like full anti lag. Much more impressive !

      Yeah, prior gen to this is definitely "homely", I have to admit I've always liked the look of these as well. I'll go a step further and say Fiero GTs can be awesome too. Knew a guy growing up that had an awesome black one, with heavy work done to it, and some body kit work. That thing sounded amazing and was quick, flames out the back were cool too.

      Has a similar engine comceptually/in theory to the 503e that powered the IMSA Celica and JGTC Supra, those cars were capable of running 1000+ hp for qualifying lap times, and the weight savings provided by the 4 cylinder were what allowed Toyota’s two wheel drive Supra to compete and ultimately beat Nissan’s incredible Altezza AWD system.

    I remember Sport Compact Car did a MR2 build in the late 90's that ended up making around 600whp. I think Norwood did some work on that car also. They said it would do wheelies. The MR2 still looks great today, too bad they are almost impossible to find unruined.

      That goes for basically every tuner car in existence. The muscle car crowd is pretty bad, but nothing like the tuner hipsters. They love to take beautiful cars and lower them to death, paint it a stupid color, add gay ass wheels, etc, etc. Just leave the car the fuck alone and drive it. Buy an older Civic if you want to rice something to oblivion. Stop destroying rare cars, morons.

    Hey! It's the same engine I have in my 86 Camry haha. I swapped it in with the celica gt-4 drivetrain. Still working out some bugs with the wiring, but it is functional and extremely fast. Before the swap my car weighed 2596 lbs without me in it, but with a full tank, full interior and a street driving car. I have yet to weigh it now, but I imagine it is 100 lbs or so heavier now since I only had FWD before. I used to have an MR2 Turbo that's where my love affair with these engines began. Now I have a 4 door that can haul people, looks unique, has that 80's boxy nostalgia I love, and moves out like a modern 4 wheel drive sports sedan. Great video as always! Surprised that car handled so well with the drag slicks in the bag, usually the sidewalls don't promote the best cornering. See you on the next vid! Until they stop popping up, I'll keep showing up. And hopefully a wire came lose or you blew a fuel or ecu fuse lol, didn't sound like an engine blew and it was still turning over fine.

    I have a 1991 MR2 with 476,000 miles. Trying to correct an overheating issue. 2.2 non turbo. Fun car commuting 110 miles a day hwy 74 Southern California,with my daughter in a car seat . I was the original owners mechanic till he gave it to me.

    whoever is editing the videos definitely mixed up the MR2's a few times in the B-roll drive-by footage. Other than that, awesome car. MR2's have always been my favorite cars, and that one is amazing

    Is the 5SFE in the Camry the same as the non-turbo SW21 5SFE? Also, is strengthening that block a must to make any power over keeping a built 3SGTE bottom end?

    • @youngweezy11
      @youngweezy11 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yes, Except the later 98+ camry blocks were a bit beefier. And no strengthening the block is not necessary to make even 700hp with that 2.2. But this makes around 1000hp (crank) on full beans. This is from a block that came from factory with 130ish hp. No surprise it needs to be reinforced to make 1000.

    • @SarahnTuned
      @SarahnTuned 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Milonakess that’s awesome! I’m sure junkyards are full of Camry 2.2 blocks too.

    • @isfngu4213
      @isfngu4213 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In order to make that power and beable to spool a big turbo you need the 5sfe button end due the the stroke and bore . Also bottom end weak point of the 3sgte is at the corner where the water pump mounting holes . I had mine crack and this was what I built back in 2009 , but the 98+ 5 s block has some revision and reinforced later year but your crank shaft needed to be refrains to match the 3sgte rods

    • @dzero5398
      @dzero5398 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Get the 98+. Don't fuck around, cracked liners... & that area around the water pump is no joke. Some peeps have cracked a gen2 or gen3 3sgte @ less than 300whp. It is a definite gamble on the -98 blocks.
      Half fill is possible for added strength. ATS has their own 'proprietary way'.

      the stock 3s block will crack around 400 ft lbs of torque. Building out a 5s block will add a few thousand dollars to your build. it's not just a simple drop in affair. i have a 2.2l 3s block, moving to a 2.3l 5s block if i dont go 2gr-fe. going 2.0 to 2.2l spooled my turbo 200 rpm faster and added 20 horse power up top.

  • @fadedndrunk
    @fadedndrunk 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice set up!! Back in the days, my friend was the first one who pioneered a hybrid 5SFE block + 3SGTE head (5S-GTE) swap about 20 years ago! It was in a 92 Camry, MR2 turbo trans, fully built engine with Garrett GT4088R, chromoly axles, custom TEIN suspension, etc. IT was a super sleeper and a beast! At it's very best, it was pushing 980hp!

    The success of the MR2 is it's potential for further development. "Unfortunately this video ends with the car having a bit of a crap-out on me, but fear not! It was only a blown fuse, a 20+ year old, stock fuse at that, and the car was running fine again 20 minutes later." Glad to hear, Thank you.

    After enabling this ride with more accessible boost down low or, otherwise, the added complexity of making a compound-charged system with the addition of a supercharger for lower RPM boost, this has what could have been a Group B rally racing successor written all over it... Has me imagining widened wells for widening the track / tire width options under fatty flared fenders. The feels.... in the hands of the likes of the Lancia Stratos drivers....

    Matt, what rpm are you flooring it at? Sounds like compressor surge but hard to tell from vid. With some combos WOT too low will induce compressor surge. But any boost/vac leak on BOV line wouldn't put enough pressure on BOV and it could flutter. Really sounds like compressor surge though and WOT corners exit at higher rpm didn't have the sound which also reinforces surge theory. Let off if you hear that. Lol. Bad juju for turbo.
