I showed each of my kids an "I Do Cars" video of a Honda Odyssey engine that grenaded due to oil starvation. That seemed to get their attention and they are much more conscious of regular oil changes and watching the guages now. Sometimes a picture IS worth a thousand words.
Which one was that? The only Odyssey engine he did was a timing failure. The oil starvation ones were both Accord engines.

A deity didn't design and build that engine. If anything, a deity gave humans the curiosity and creativity to invent such a thing. Trouble is, perfection wasn't included in the package so our results are obtained by trial and error. Emphasis on error. We learn from our mistakes. Dorman improved a part in pursuit of perfection.

That overheating issue nearly happened to me (sort of twice). My 2009 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab had those plastic bits going into the Heater Core. The temp went up and I couldn't quite figure out why, until I heard a hissing and saw some coolant leaking. Replace one, then the other cracked. Both new ones were aluminum, thus, hopefully, will last much longer.

Say what you will about the Pentastar 3.6 but I say it's pretty damn impressive that it ran long enough with no coolant to get to that temperature before finally dying. You can only ask so much of an engine and continuing to drive after all the coolant has been puked out is not within its operating paramaters, or design.
Years ago I sold a Volvo 740 to a friend, his girlfriend drove it on the highway after a radiator neck broke off and drove till it quit. Engine got so hot that the timing belt cover melted off and sagged away.
Engine barely had any compression after that, the cylinders were probably blued from heat.

Great job Ray! It goes to show that there are still some compassionate people around. Im sure there is a back story to this family and good on you for helping them out of a difficult situation. I’ve been there and I had an amazing mechanic who deferred many of my repairs, so I could take our vacation knowing that our car wasn’t going to leave us stranded in the middle of nowhere! Couldn’t afford new cars back then but our family always had a trouble free vacation because of this amazing person!🇨🇦

Ray, many of those Chrysler ignition switches were subject to a recall for the exact issues you displayed. I would check and see if that van was included and/or repairs performed. The dealers replaced the switch and key(s) for free. Worth a check!! I had the key shut off at 70 mph in a van just like that. I was lucky and responded by turning the key on and nothing missed a beat(for some reason)!
God bless you guys for helping a family in need, I'm sure they will be so thankful for your generosity and kindness. This world could use a bunch more kindness like this!

GM 4 cylinders have the same issue, a plastic coolant hose connector. Dorman also makes a metal one for it like the Chrysler.

Also that key fob should not pull out while running. That will be about $800 for parts.
Respect Ray. I know for sure how much work there is in changing an engine..
So rebuilding with new clutch etc. may take a lot of time and work, and you guys do this for free.

Great sset of videos. Very cool to fix the van for free. I've never heard of another shop doing the same. Remember to check the air in the spare. It to has a TPS sensor.

YEAY, as Ray mentioned that Eric and him is going to tear down the 3.6 vvt, i gotbso THRILLED and CAN NOT WAIT to watch them both tear down that engine. im imagining now that Ray will have a beer on one hand while let Eric do all the tear down.. This will be so fun to watch. CANT WAIT.

@ rainman ray repair I say thank you for the info you provide thru your videos because I'm able to help customers who come in to our store (a large auto parts store) 1 customer is interested in the upgrade for the oil cooler on the pentastar engine has 2 vehicles with that engine

You got to put a straight edge on head and block when you disassemble failed engine... always wondered how much warping happens on an overheated engine.

Hi Ray automotive locksmith here. If the Fobik fob isn't damaged the broken part on the car the fob inserts into is the Win module. You probably know that but might help educate the viewers. If it's the fob you can buy a shell and transfer the board and emergency blade if it has one rather cheaply. The Win module is a bit of an expense though.

@@billbillinger2491 I get it. I miss the easy old days even though I make a lot more money on the fobs. They are a PITA for us too. Some cars depending on the trim level and options can take up to 4 different ones. It's not easy for us to know which one it is. The same car can have a 3,4 or 5 button remote. Most customers don't know either. Some are interchangeable and some are not. Mazda for instance has 2 different 3 button fobs for the same vehicle. Nobody carries one of them. The wrong one will not program. Our cheapest lost key on a service call is $250. Not to mention we have $1000's in programmers and $1000's in CNC key cutting machines. We also have $1000's in fob inventory on the trucks. We are still usually cheaper than the dealer.
If I'm not mistaken, if there is no water the sensor will not be able to show a temp.
Yup just drive it with brake warning lights on and others. Ignore all maintenance because you’re just hauling your kids in it 😂 Will they learn from this???
Nah, Ray stated at the beginning of this recording that it was towed to him because he was familiar with it from doing the maintenance on it. The family is struggling financially and was doing the maintenance that they could afford. 🤷♂️ Everybody is struggling these days, don’t you know…

Yeah I know right, if you "know" your only vehicle that hauls your kids around has electricity issues maybe just maybe keep a eye on fluids and smells lol but you know 😉

We had a work van similar to that one years ago. I may be thinking of the wrong years, but I think k there was a recall on that ignition switch. The dealer did something to it for a fix. As I recall, the key could fall out while driving and lock the column.
I wish you had a detail shop in on this build to fix the headlights and at least make that engine cover black again. It would be the cherry on top of your great rebuild. I'd also love to see the TPMS warning light gone. Maybe they wouldn't ignore the lights if it no longer had any lights?

Looking good. If they don't wish to address the ignition module, let me know and I will donate the money to replace it. It is s straight forward job, but you will need the security pin to complete the replacement. I just did mine on a 2012 Ram 1500.
