Thank you!! This is the one aspect that all the other vids neglect or slightly skim over. Much appreciated.

Releasing the shift cable worked on my Johnson 225. Very frustrating before that. Thanks!

So helpful to know the lower unit shift rod is adjustable and the that could be the reason why my shifter doesn’t always go back into neutral, but keeps in forward gear. I’ve tried the shift cable adjustment, but have to screw it out all the way. I need to start with the correct distance of the shift rod first. Thanks for sharing

Hello, your video helped me reconnect the shift linkage on my old 55hp, mine has a rubber boot cover over the bottom and I couldn't see that it was threaded there and could lengthen or shorten when turned. Thanks!

this motor has the ability (89' and up 2 cyl looper 28-50hp) to remove the lower cowl covers, exposing the shift linkage/rod. now its 10x easier to get some needle nose pliers and fanagle it into position. this is why the engineers re-designed the lower cowl.

I find it's easier to remove the starter motor and get to it that way. However both ways work and that makes sense as I have seen the older design.

If I have tried cycling through the gears up top but I'm still 1mm short of being able to connect what would be the issue? I don't think I have spun the switch rod because the hole was still facing the way it needs to be connected.

Try lengthening the rod 1 turn at a time to see if you get the correct length. You can always put it back. And then you know for sure you didn't turn it by mistake. Or maybe it wasn't set correctly before you took it apart.

that's for a model that takes that specific type of bracket, a 90 hp is different.
