How to disconnect Evinrude shift rod - remove lower unit - shift rod link pin

  • Update:
    1 - when you put the shift pin back in, use some sort of thread locker or sealant, be sure NOT to over tighten it. Its very easy to break the thread.
    2 - I recommend removing the longest bolt, the one closest to the propeller facing upward first. It is the longest and if you remove the other bolts first its easy to stress it and cause a break.
    I made another video talking about Shift Rod alignment when Re-Installing the Lower Unit: • Troubleshoot Outboard ...
    To remove the lower unit on an Evinrude Outboard the Shift Link needs to be disconnected.
    The Shift Link joins the lower unit gear shift rod to the upper engine part. This is the only tricky part that involved removing the lower unit. All other screws / bolts are on the bottom where the lower unit is attached.
    The engine show is a 1995 40HP Evinrude Two Stroke.

    Use a 1/4" drive ratchet with a long extension and a swivel socket.. I find this is the easiest way.. If your swivel is too floppy, wrap a piece of electronical tape around the swivel joint. And when reinstalling the linkage bolt hold it in the swivel soket with tape. Then pull it off after the bolt is started...

    Thank you for this. It is the same for my johnson 50tleds. When I started to remove the lower unit there was some resistance at the beginning similar to when the top of the rod comes through the bushing at the bottom of the upper unit. Is there a second bushing at the top of the hole just underneath where the rod attaches to the linkage? I'm wondering if what I was feeling was the bend in the rod possibly pulling an upper bushing down into the tube and the bushing is still inside the tube and not covering the hole at the top of the rod.

    This is not too off topic, but I need help doing the linkage adjusting/synchronization on my 1997 Johnson 15hp tiller model 2strk. The manual says to remove pin retaining throttle lever connector. However, you cannot access this without removing the lower power head cowling, which I attempted to do but there is one screw I cannot get to as it is almost underneath the power head by the latch mechanism and no way to access. Was wondering if anyone has ever been successful performing this synchro procedure and if so, how did you successfully remove that last screw (located inside the cowling, towards the back of the powerhead, right by the latch mechanism)? Thanks in advance!

    Should I be able to shift my motor from rev, neutral, fwd, by hand like that? Mine does not. Is there something else that needs to be disconnected?
    Just bought the boat and only had in the water for test drive. Shifted fine from the console shifter, but not by hand at the motor. Any info would be appreciated.

    • @cenkaetaya
      @cenkaetaya  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This means a few things. First off make sure both the lower unit and the top are in same gear. Say push / pull the rod so its in forward, and set the engine at top to forward. Now check to see if the holes align. If they still do not it likely means you turned it accidentally while working on it. You now need to rotate the shiftrod left or right to have it match the hole above. Once you have it all lined up, put the shift link pin in and you should be good. Be sure to now test the shifting, forward - neutral - reverse, all should work well.

    Now I guess you could do it this way but why? Pull the two pins on the shift arm on the opposite side of the motor where the linkage and cables meet and push in on the shift arm and it will push that pin out of the shifter rod to free it. Don't need to take anything off other than those pins.

    how does unscrewing this release the lower unit ?

    • @cenkaetaya
      @cenkaetaya  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is the only thing holding it on outside of the 5 bolts on the bottom. You ideally do not want to unscrew the bottom and have it hang on this pin. Remove this first, and then the bolts below.
      Also measure the length of the rod when it comes out and be careful to not change it, as if you rotate the shift rod itl screw up the shifting calibration.
