HOW TO change the SPARK PLUGS and COILS in a 2019 RAM ProMaster Van | EP 4 Summer OFF-GRID HOME.

  • This week’s video is different than our other videos.
    During our recent travels, we started having some perplexing issues with Clarity, our RAM ProMaster van. Somewhere near Gettysburg, Matt plugged in his Blue Driver Scan tool and determined that he needed to change the spark plugs and coils.
    A search on TH-cam for a video on performing this maintenance proved discouraging. Matt learned enough to get the job done, but it took him a lot of time and frustration. So, we decided that we’d make a How-To video on changing the spark plugs and coils in an effort to help others avoid the experience Matt had.
    If you don’t have a Ram Promaster van and don’t care about changing the spark plugs - no worries. Next week we’ll be back with more summer off-grid living, growing a Square Foot Garden, and whatever else happens in our lives.
    We hope you are having a wonderful, safe, and fun summer!
    See you in the next one.

    This was more helpful than the dozen others I watched (done by mechanics). Thank you very much for making this!

    I have the Blue Driver scan tool and have found false readings on the Pentastar. 3.6 engine. Be careful relying on it before making any repairs. I used a Foxwell scanner that is designed for the Chrysler engines and found it to be more accurate. Do not let anyone change your oil! The plastic oil filter housing will leak if the cap is over tightened. Inexperienced mechanics will break it and it is expensive to replace. It is also a lot of work to replace it. You are correct about the lack of videos about Promaster maintenance procedures. Nice job with the video.

    Good demo. That black round object you were unfamiliar with is oil filter housing. Just an fyi. Thanks

      Im surprised, you should be especially familiar with the oil filter.
      Promaster is one of the easiest oil changes to do. The thingy there( filter housing) is just a bit hard to get unscrewed. Loosen it to let oil bleed down for a few minutes, then spin it out and change the cartridge. Use new o-ring every time too.
      Do it often and give your engine a fighting chance to last a long time.
      Good video btw.

    Miss the old days when we didn’t have to remove engine parts to replace plugs. Thank you for this vid, I have a 2019 Promaster and plan to replace my own plugs and not take it to a stealership.

      Right on. Save hundreds. Glad it was helpful. One note...If you develop a misfire don't just replace the coil boots and springs like I did in the video. The actual coil module is the little square piece the boot connects to. Not sure why they sold me just the boot when I asked for coils. My issue came right back until I replaced the coil module. We'll find out if it comes back again on the next trip next month. Great journeys ahead for you! Matt

      You are so welcome! We discovered recently the coil springs and boots didn't solve the problem. It returned on our last trip to the desert so we had to replace the #3 coil module. Hope that takes care of it! So far so good!

    Good video.. but the coil pack is the top part with the wires connected to the wire harness , the part you disconnected that connects to the spark plug is the boot with the spring in it.

    I have to do this same job on my 2017 promaster in about a week. I too could not find any in depth videos on this. Thanks a bunch for the clear explanation. Btw, did you use mopar plugs or aftermarket? what are your thoughts on this? Thanks again, Mike

    • @ClarityOffGrid
      @ClarityOffGrid  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mike. Thanks for the comment and I apologize for the late reply. I was busy getting ready for a river trip then got sick and have been struggling to back up to speed. I elected to replace with the OEM champions that only lasted 60k miles. In hindsight I’m wishing I’d spent double the money on the NGKs. Too late now though. Good luck on the job! Holler if I can help in any other way! Matt

    how has been your experience owning the Promaster.....it has a reputation of more maintainance than Transit or Sprinter.......i am thinking at the moment of buying a used one (most probably 2018 to 2022)

    • @ClarityOffGrid
      @ClarityOffGrid  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We loved the build we did in our Promaster and we didn't find the maintenance to be an issue. We replaced the spark plugs, changed the oil, and didn't have any issues with it during the 4 years we had it.
      However, I (Kristina) found it very uncomfortable as a passenger and as a driver.
      The Sprinter is incredibly comfortable (2022 4x4 model). We love it!
      I wish we had taken all three options for an extensive test drive before we purchased the Promaster. If you can, I would recommend driving them.
      Go luck on finding the perfect van for you. If you want to see the build on our Sprinter you'll find the build on our channel.

    I do like your van a lot. would you do it again? or would you look to Diesel. like the bigger ford van, or the sprinter.

    • @ClarityOffGrid
      @ClarityOffGrid  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We love our promaster for the short wheel base and the tight turning radius. The clearance is pretty good. The cost of the Mercedes would be prohibitive for us. For comfort and the all wheel drive, we would consider the Ford Transit, but it has pretty low clearance.
      If you'd like to see a little tour of the Ford Transit, we did this mini tour of our friends van: th-cam.com/video/Ws8IZJajDnE/w-d-xo.html.
      Have you seen the latest tour of our short-body van? th-cam.com/video/1oSN-JfIvXY/w-d-xo.html

    Enjoy your videos. Very informative. I'm driving my new promaster camper over the Mexican border July 15th. Question about the import permit; tried to do it online but it was rejected I think because of the temporary registration on a new vehicle. Do you think I will have better luck at the border with my bill of sale, purchase contract, temporary plates and registration? I know it's a crap shoot but I have read articles that new vehicles are allowed. YOUR THOUGHTS? Aside from that, there are new travel advisories for Tijuana, Rosarito, and Baja. Would you go now?

    • @ClarityOffGrid
      @ClarityOffGrid  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry but we have nothing to add regarding the vehicle permit except that so much depends on the agent processing the paperwork. I’m guessing the bill of sale with the temporary should work. However the temps usually aren’t for 6 months so they may limit the permit to coincide with the date of the temp? Even that assumes the agent is savvy enough to to get that far. Many ifs in your situation. As for travel advisories I would take them with a grain of salt. However it is good practice to stay clear of border towns and big cities to avoid cartel activity and maximize safety. We still contend that most of Mexico is safer than the US and most people are incredibly friendly and inclusive once clear of the cities.

    • @ClarityOffGrid
      @ClarityOffGrid  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh. In Baja a vehicle permit is not required. So I think the bill of sale should work. Mx Insurance is still required.

    • @ClarityOffGrid
      @ClarityOffGrid  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Welcome. Our van was pretty reliable. Obviously, Matt had to change the spark plugs which was a pain in the butt, but it served us well. We sold it in July with 70kish miles on it. It was a great van, but living in rural Colorado, we felt like we needed an AWD. For most folk, the RAM Promaster would work great.

    Did you get any engine codes for this?

    • @ClarityOffGrid
      @ClarityOffGrid  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Nicholas. Sorry but I deleted the screen shot I took of the codes. Something like 2330? maybe?? Any way, I did learn that the "coils" they sold me were the boots and spring but I should have also replaced the coil module that the boot attaches to. On our last trip I had the same issue and had to replace the #3 coil module. I now carry a spare in the van so if it happens again I'll be ready. I suspect this happened prematurely because one hot muggy day in Puerto Escondido, MX we sat with the engine idling for about 45 minutes while we were trying to figure out our hotel situation. When I finally turned off the van and then tried to restart it I had all kinds of warnings. After it all cooled down I was able to start it normally. We'll keep looking because I thought I sent Kristina the screen shot of the error code to put in the video. If I find it I may put out an update to include all this info.
