How to Use an Electric Hedge Trimmer to Trim Bushes

- Trimming bushes can be slow and tedious. But an electric hedge trimmer can drastically reduce the time and improve the look of your shrubs, bushes and hedges. We use a Toro electric trimmer:

The cordless lithium battery Toro trimmer version may be a bit more convenient but at close to double the price:

Here is another brand of corded hedge trimmer:
CRAFTSMAN Electric Hedge Trimmer, 22-Inch (CMEHTS822)
by CRAFTSMAN

The technology - how the trimmers operate - are basically similar. So the results will depend more on your technique.
In this video we stress the need for having a plan on how you are going to trim the bush. Don't under cut the bottom. Start at the bottom side of the bush and trim going up with the upper side of the shrub being a little more narrow at the top to allow sunlight to reach the lowest branches to encourage even growth.
Don't neglect safety. These trimmer are powered saws which don't offer second chances. Pay attention!. Wear gloves.
Go slow in trimming alway conscious about where the blade is and what is nearby. Take off a little at a time - the work will go fast so no need to chop too much off at a time. Make sure to stop from time to time and step back and check your progress from all angles.

Just got my first hedge trimmer, and thought I should watch a few videos before using it. This was the best!
Hi Dani Reviews Things, great to hear, thanks for letting us know!
Hello there sir i just want to say i never had a father figure in my life to teach me about this stuff and I really appreciate this video i just bought one of this machine’s and I was scared to use it but thanks to you am confident now thank you for this amazing video 👍

Thank you for watching!!
Thanks for the video. I've always trimmed by hand, what a pain! I love how you discuss the safety when using these. One thing you didn't mention was the use of safety glasses. I highly recommend wearing safety glasses when using any power tool!
Hey Mike..,
Thx for the input and for watching!
Definitely a great job at butchering that plant - never go that deep into the purple - whenever you can see the side of the house clearly through the plant, you have went too deep - and try to keep your body in between all of that hanging cord and the trimmers - unless you like sparks and popping electric wires - I always try to wrap as much of the cord as possible behind my leg that is furthest away from the trimmer - it is better to not have excess cord just laying between you and the shrub
I'm about to use a trimmer for the first time, and your video is very thorough, thank you!!
Thank you for this video. Will be purchasing a trimmer this weekend to maintenance my own hedges. This was very helpful!
One doesn't think about the implications of using this tool so I am glad you did this video!
Hey Lori,
True. Thx for watching!
I just loved this. I've done this a bunch of times with zero guidance but today I figured I'd check and see what I'm doing wrong lol. I loved the "screw up" with the cord falling out. I don't know if it was intentional or not, but either way, it's those kinds of things that we need to see! Plus the guy in the video, you're super likable which is NOT always the case with men teaching how to do something on TH-cam 😆. So thanks so much for taking the time to do this!
This helped a lot! Bought a house in late spring and it came with 3 large hedges (personally not a fan of hedges) and finally I've decided to go out and get them taken care of
Hey Eight…,
Great - Glad it helped! Thx for watching
thanks for the help, I will have a little more knowledge going into my new job
I watched your video, trimmed the hedges, and on the last stroke I cut the cord just like you warned against! The whole while I watched I thought this was just an over-zealous precaution. Boy was I wrong. Pay attention guys.
Hey yushaq…,
Made me smile… with empathy! Been there, done that! Like you said - too easy!
Thx for sharing your experience!

Hey Shok…,
Thx for watching!
Thanks for the video. I'm 18 and doing some landscaping work and figured I should try and learn how to learn how to use hedge trimmers considering I've had a lot of people ask me over time. Definitely appreciate the safety tips.
Hey Purify…,
Glad to help. We hope you enjoy much success in your entrepreneurial endeavors!
Thx for watching and commenting!
Excellent video. I have 3 very large green and gold shrubs (don't know the name but they're very common). Haven't been trimmed in two seasons and I just don't want to pay $100.00 or whatever my grass guy will charge to trim 3 bushes. Had been thinking of buying a trimmer but wasn't sure exactly try HOW to trim the bushes. I'd thought to start at the bottom, and that's as much as I'd figured out. Your video is perfect - walked me through the hazards of the tool and how to use it, and gave me a technique to use for trimming the shrubs. I'm not afraid to cut too much now, either! Thank you so much for posting this tutorial. Very practical information, clearly presented, and I think I will definitely buy that hedge trimmer now.
Hey Junia,
Thanks for the comment - hope your work is a great success! Thx for watching!
Very Helpful.
Hey Reba,
Thx for watching!
thanks Steve Gruel
Thanks big bro ✊🏾
Hey Q.B,
Thx for watching and for the encouragement!
Thank you
Hey Life’s…,
Thx for watching!
Thanks you.
Thank you too
Thanky you sir.
Hey Mr…,
Thx for watching!
Great reassuring video thank you 😊 my son-in-law has lent me cordless (that's one problem less!) hedge trimmer and need to use on overgrown Summer growth which has become taller than me! With trepidation I have to use this to make a start as I wasn't sure if the cordless strimmer would cope with it.. Starting at the bottom is good too straight away as the opposite is what I would have done. Thanking you. (UK)
Also had wondered about wearing glasses as another comment points out.
Hey April…,
Thx for letting us know your viewing home! And you are on to something - cordless must be way better. I’ve made my corded trimmer cordless by not paying strict attention to where the cord was. Problem is my “cordless” design lacked any power!
And yes, safety glasses would not be a bad option at all.
Thx for watching and commenting!
Thanks for the detailed video. I'm about to try my hands at these bushes now. Quick question, do these electric trimmers have to be oiled or maintained in any way?
Hey Shun,
I don’t think mine does. May want to double check w/ manufacturer….
Thx for watching!
@@Housebarons OK thank you for responding.
TH-cam can be a dad to anyone LOL
Goggles are a good safety requirement too.
Hey Blue,
True. Thx for watching!
My lead was cut when using it whoops it happens.
So rather than dismay he took to rewire.
I bought one of those connectors rewired it near to the handle to avoid it being cut again Successfully repair 😊
Always keep the lead behind you out of the cutting area .
I just got a Black & Decker unit from amazon. It looks like it was made in the same factory.
Hey Brian..,
Would not surprise me!
Hi what’s the name of the sheet you put down to collect the wedges
Helpful info but no eye or ear protection needed? Maybe drooping cord over shoulder would help keep it from getting cut? Thanks.
Hey Allen,
Thx for the input. Thx for watching!

Hey Marianne,
Thx for watching!
Can it cut a branch like size of a finger ?
Hey Esther,
Yes - a half inch or so.
Thx for watching!
A cordless DeWalt trimmer works great and you don't have to deal with the cord getting caught.
Hey choc…,
Love cordless!
Thx for watching!
❤
Oops it looks like you accidentally cut your pants with it also👖 😬 it’s just a joke great video dude 😊 👍
Hey Real,
😃 Thx for watching!
hi can u help me do a video review for 2021 new upgraded digital multimeter ,it is multi functional and like a cellphone,we can offer u a free product tks
Tye crooked light is driving me nuts!
Hey Povod,
Good eye for detail!
Thx for watching!
I don't like the cord slot a lot of these machines have. If you want to go a long distance you're better off with a thicker cord, because some of your machines are high amp, that just won't fit in there probably without damaging it. I'd hang it another way with a very loose knot.
Hey un…,
Thx for the input and for watching!
Electric Trimmer
Can't give a thumbs down, huh ?
You cut off all the colorful ends that give it character and distinguish it. And the irregular lengths of each branch is what makes it look like a plant, not a statue.
You cut into your pants too I notice
Thx for watching!
Bare feet are for inside your home or on the beach or around a pool, otherwise at least wear thongs or flip flops.
Hey Wayne,
You can take the boy out of Kentucky, but you can’t …,
You know how it goes.😃
Thx for watching!
I’ll say it… stop telling people how to carry themselves around their domain and in the privacy of their property.
