Well this is the only video in all of the hundreds of them, that even talks about how to take off that damn axle cap. Thank you very much! I found one video that starts off with the nut or cap so badly rusted the it just falls off has he tilts the wheel to a 90 degrees. All the rest are washers that can be bent up and off. I'm drilling a hole through the axle and putting in a pin.

The clamping action is spring tension. A chisel at the end of 1 "wing" cut will make the nut easy to remove with pliers.

@@michaeldelaney7242 try getting a couple of picks under those wings. It'll come off pretty easy if you can get both sides at the same time. The rest of that hat just holds the wings in place.

Wow, that's a big job to do this. They usually come off grabbing the middle area with a pliers, and rotate counter clockwise like a normal bolt. Take a vice grip to hold the axle from rotating.

I call B.S. on the pliers trick. Hell, a blow-torch isn't removing that blasted push nut off my dolly. It's no longer worth my time and energy. Perhaps dynamite.

😂😂😂😂😂…, I’m 74-year-old woman and I want to change the tires on my garbage can. I bought one at the garage sale and the wheels are too small.. WTF? 🤷‍♀️..I got what I paid for I guess 😂. I’m determined and I’m gonna try to do it so I will continue to look at different videos and pick the one that I have the tools for. Wish me luck boys!

Good idea, thanks for the video. The last time I had to do one of these, I used an angle grinder, but I also got into the axle some, but it worked. Today I'll try screwing it off as Kent S suggested below, and if that doesn't get it, then I'll try the drill.

as interesting as this is. I tried to do the same thing (removal) with the tool that is used to remove car windshield blade arm. It does a better trick and when loose pull it out with any plier to finish it off.

Also suggest twisting off cap with channel locks on each end, or vice grips. Also that wing or metal tab that is in the first part of video, could you get some fine tip flatheads and just pry it away from the axle, until push nut slips off? Not criticizing just adding to what you did, and all the projects I try with my kids I ask them what are all the different ways we can tackle this, before we start. Also make sure drill set to drill versus screw if it has variable speeds.

Grab the push nut with piers and rotate counter-clockwise. It will come off just like a threaded one.Tap it back on with a deep well socket.

Good idea, I'll try it, but I may not be able to keep the axle from turning with it.

if this works without damaging the push nut, then it's brilliant.

@@whatever5575 I used this method on my hand truck axel without any consequence while replacing the solid rubber wheels with pneumatic ones. I took my time and wasn't heavy handed during the removal and reattachment of the nuts. I did this over a year ago and the nuts are still securely attached to the axel. This method saved me considerable time and frustration.

It is wise go get some spare part push nuts before taking off then it does not matter if the original push nuts are damaged. The push nuts are not designed to be re-used after taking off.

are push nuts a thing of the past. i lost one off my lawn mower yesterday and after stopping at 2 local big box stores...no one even knew what i was talking about and had only macgyver thoughts on how to fix it? So my wife suggested buying a new lawn mower!

Lowes, Home Depot, and Ace Hardware all carry pushnuts. Unfortunately, not all their employees know what they are. The older people are your best bet for service.

I enjoyed the talking very much. Reminded me of hanging out with my Grandfather in his workshop when I was young. I was his only grandchild for 14 years and a bit of a tomboy so we were buddies. He's been gone 25 years and I miss him everyday. I am very greatfull I clicked on this particular video. Not only was I able to remove the push-nut from my cart wheel. It felt a little like Grandpa Leo was showing me how, and that warmed my heart and brightened my day.
So... To each his own on the talking thing. 😉
