    THANKS A LOT !!!!
Using your hint, i finally removed a security wheel lug.
For info, for Toyota RAV4 original security nut, use a 19mm TWELVE POINT socket and drive it in with a small sledgehammer.
And even more important, take care to limit the security wheel nut torque to
103 Nm ( 76 ft-lbs ) as suggested by the manufacturer. Tightening it to full torque ( 135Nm or 100 ft-lbs ) like the other nuts would result in a probable failure.

I have a Jeep Renegade with these decorative bolt covers on them, they were destroyed by the dealer itself on a previous servicing and they wanted to charge me $200 plus labor for removing all of those and replacing them with new ones (that will eventually fail again). Thanks for your video, at least now I know I can remove them by myself, just need to get one of those wheel nut removal sets.

You are correct, if they want it they will take it, but this just helps slow down the process for those looking for a quick job. I had to do that with the locks on a car I have. Now I need to figure out how to get a new key so I can use them again.

i worked for a decent sized auto/tire shop for a few years. ive have delt with customers that lost their wheel locks way to many times to count. when this happened. the methods you show work an ive used them. my goto was a air hammer with a chisel bit. it was pretty much a universal key for all the locks. if you can get to them without marring up a rim. so just go in at a angle on the wheel lock an can spin it right off with the air hammer.. worst case you can always cut it off the stud with the air hammer if ur having problems , you just may have to replace the stud when your finished that way. . one thing id suggest is going to your local tire shop, sometimes they have a key set like we did, we did not have every variety of key but we had a handfull of common wheel lock keys at the shop.

Those wheel locks with the pretzel pattern should be out lawed. I had a full set of those on my Oldsmobile. One lug nut was seized tight. A friend of mine came over and showed me a trick. He put a slightly over sized cobalt socket over the bad one. Beat it on with a hammer. Then used the four way lug wrench. He was standing on the end of the lug wrench and the bad lug finally broke free. I replaced all the lug nuts with normal chrome ones.

Easy out sockets work good. The first one you showed is the one that I was talking about. You can separate the socket with a drift punch and a vice. I have the gorilla locks and have a extra lock socket in the house for that very reason. Been there, done that!

  • @towmantowman

I had the mcgard ones get stuck on my moms car when the key snapped off (yes I used a handheld breaker bar to torque the wheel locks). I got lucky and went to harbor freight and bought a wheel lock removal kit which is the same as your rounded bolt removal tool you used. I couldn't use my cordless or pneumatic impact guns to get the lock nut loose as it kept rounding off the edge of the lock. I ended up being successful by using a sledge hammer to keep pounding on the head of my ratchet while keeping tension on the breaker bar I was using to unscrew the lock.

I felt sorry for you so I liked and subscribed to your channel and I enjoyed the video~!! I would like to suggest that the nut with the spinning ring might be removed if you got a high quality cold chisel that was sharp and cut that ring off the nut then apply the removal socket on the solid lug nut. I don't believe you ruined the wheel just don't show the car with that wheel on it. Thanks for the informative video as I didn't know a person could even buy one of these kits.

Always remember to check for your lug keys after having tires rotated! Luckily or unluckily, when I discovered the dealership couldn’t fix my flat, I needed a full set of tires anyway so I wasn’t charged to have to remove my locking lug nut that the last place the rotated my tires never put the key back.

The Mercedes Benz wheel locks are the best, almost impossible to get off. The bolt holes are very small so you can’t fit any other sockets in it other than the traditional 17”. And they also have the rotating ring around the lock.

I think you can make an adapter that goes over the Mopar Lugs. The adapter puts one electrode of a spot welder electrode to the spin ring and the other electrode to the center of the nut. Apply power for about a second or two and this will fuse the spin ring to the nut, then you can use the other methods to remove it. Welding the inside of a nut to a lug is best, just tape/slip-on protective sheets/mats/pads around the welding area to protect the rims.

I had factory locking lugs on my Titan. One of two dealers lost the key socket (it was there when I bought the truck and only had work done at two dealers). Had the truck at he dealer to replace a front axle boot and after having it all day and telling me at 6:30 at night that they couldn't finish because they couldn't get the locking lug nuts off. I couldn't believe it. I found a 12 point socket that fit just right, bought 4 generic non locking nuts and had all 4 off and replaced in about 15 minutes. The hardest part sometimes is getting the socket back off the nut once off.

About 5weeks ago I did a break job on my Silverado. Then a couple weeks later I was going to replace the plugs and wires. The easy way to do this is through the wheel well. Wouldn't you know it I couldn't find the lug nut lock key. (I think I may have left it on one of the wheels, because I still have not found it.) I went to autozone, got one of the lock nut removers and it worked like a charm. Throw it in a vice with the base of the lock nut clamped and remove the "easyout." My luck is that I will eventually find it in an odd place.

The chicken bit was pretty good. I don't believe putting more torque on all the other lugs will reduce the torque need to remove the lock nut though. It would be easy to myth bust with a torque wrench. Torque all nuts to proper torque then check to see how much torque is required to loosen one. Then torque them all to proper torque again, increase the torque of 4 of the 5 and then check to see how much torque it takes to remove the 5th. I seriously doubt it will be less than the first test.

Those extractors should be used by hand not with an impact. Ive seen people "machine" the fastener down with them instead of it biting. I also keep a set of those spline drive sockets that are supposed to fit everything but really dont fit anything. Welding is typically the quickest way but ive found some locking lugnuts you cant weld to. 3m makes welding paper to help with spatter. Cut a hole in it to fit around the lugnut to minimize damage.

I have always hated those stupid lug nuts. I worked in dealerships for 15 years and you wouldn’t believe how many customers don’t have the key to them or don’t bother putting it out where you can find them. I just love tearing through the glove compartment and everywhere else in some strangers vehicle looking for a stupid lug nut socket only to end up beating a socket on to remove it. Good times. I remove them from any vehicle I buy and replace them with a good solid nut. Same thing for those cheap ass nuts ford uses with the thin cap of chrome over the nut. The nut swells under the chrome and or the chrome part comes off and then you’re ruining sockets getting them off. Actually, those cheap 2 piece lug nuts are probably better protection against theft than locking lug nuts after a few years in the weather
