This magsafe is quite cool but i see a huge problem knowing Apple cables: non detachable wire. You will need to replace the hole Magsafe every year instead of replacing just the cable
I don't think this should wear out that quickly as it doesn't go through the exact same paces a traditional USB or Lightning cable does. You don't really move it around that much nor do you yank it or tear it around or make creases in the cable that much. I also have never replaced a single Lightning cable with my old iPhone 6S Plus, I don't really even get how people treat their cables when they have to replace them every year.
I really like MagSafe on my iPhone 12, mostly because I can’t wait to see how car manufacturers implement it, car mounts or built in to the dash already. There are a lot of great possibilities with it. Only time will tell though
ah you see you could not reverse the barrel design at all so wasn't reversible magsafe is reversible, you also need more engineering to prevent creating a wrong way to plug it in.
@@manakmishra that’s not necessarily true. my iBook G3’s yo-yo power adapter can spin 360° plugged in and it doesn’t hurt anything internally. they used that barrel plug design since 1996 with the powerbook 1400. the barrel was always able to spin across all these models, and that’s a 10 year difference between PB1400 and the first macbook. however in terms of durability, the magsafe wins 100 times over. the yoyos are so easy to break at the stem right before the barrel.
Yeah and no. Of purse wireless charging has worse efficiency, but with the magnets the 2 coils are perfectly aligned which means that the effiency is much higher then normal and I would guess that there is not a big difference to normal charging. Also many people use wireless charging nevertheless so making this alignment by magnets, which increases the effluence a lot, will actually save energy
I guess we'll also have to give you an ethernet port on your phone for your internet. I on the other hand, prefer anything wireless (most of the time), except when it comes to my speakers. The subwoofer is fine to be wireless. Charging wirelessly is fine too and you don't need it to be super fast.
@@screamtoasigh9984 the barrel plug goes in at an infinate number of angles with some chargers the cable may end up bent a little, but when that does happen you wont have to fight the bend in the cable whenever you go to plug it in
"I bet you haven't plugged in your iPhone to your computer in years" *Laughs in iOS developer* On a more serious note: While Xcode already supports WiFi debugging, it is less stable and slower than Lightning. Also, I am sometimes using my iPhone as a microphone input through Audio MIDI Setup, which requires a wired connection (as of right now). So when Apple removes the Lightning port, they better have a solution for both of these things.
@@thetechrealist I mean you can work with the iOS simulator, which pretty much does most of the things that the real iPhone can do. But it's already a pain right now because installs often fail for no reason.
Not to mention backing up my device to my computer. I would rather do that than pay for icloud storage. Or, what about when you need to restore the phone using a computer? What stops apple from saying they can't restore the phone so you need a new one?
the part about improving stickiness with rubber is true. I bought a MagSafe case that is rubberized. The wallet sticks to it better because of it. I previously had a hard plastic case, and the wallet would slide off often because it had less friction than the rubber case. The friction makes all the difference.
Just like 99% of products on the market, believe me all you need in this life is food and shelter the other things you own are solutions to problems you don’t really have
I was skeptical about the MagSafe charger at first too, but now I am in love with it. It is so convenient and one big problem it solved is that when using actual cable charging the phone and you don’t plug in carefully, It scratches the finish of the phone. Let’s face it We’ve all been there, brand shiny new Phone scratched by lightning cable because we missed the port a bit.
Really handy thing I think MagSafe brings is for car handlers. Way more comfortable to just place the phone next to your wheel and not having to clip it or I don’t know what when you go in and out of your car very often
The MagSafe wallet is amazing. It hadn’t failed me once. Its shear force is meant to be weak for easy removal to take cards out. If it doesn’t suit your, use a normal wallet.
@@AlricoAmona98 As someone into cybersec, I can tell you I really just _love_ this idea. All those phones _only_ syncing their data over wireless connections? Yes please! It's just _sooooo_ amazing! Woo!
@@liesdamnlies3372 I can see your sarcasm through the screen! :D But yeah, I don't get the portless phone idea at all. So many accessories rely on the port and I don't see a way to replace it. Mics, audio out, usb adapters, sd card readers, drone remotes, thermal cameras and so on. Apple wants you to buy an Android if you use any of these accessories with your smart phone? Really?
@@chrismannik No, they want you to buy their own special products or approved accessories, which will let them roll in more money. Apple loyalists will do it with a smile, and even claim Apple is doing it all for the environment at the same time. Even though it’s obvious they couldn’t give two shits about that.
It's gonna happen. It's what Apple fucking does man, just ditch them already so they can't be the ones controlling the global smartphone market with less than a 15% share globally! What Apple does allows other companies to follow which is often to the detriment of the user. Removing the headphone jack created a ripple effect and now it's hard as fuck to find a flagship phone of any brand with one.
@@Seawolf.Gaming Is it ONLY sony now? offering a headphone jack? shame. Weird how there are so many people who seemingly support such a decision for no reason. @@PanosPitsi Sony offers it because it's stupid not to include one. Sony also makes wireless headphones. And yet they haven't removed it. Apple makes wired headphones (beats) and yet they removed the Jack, to sell Bluetooth earphones for astronomical prices.
@Erwyn Puynen For about a year, the iPhone 13 coming out 2021 has been rumored to not have a lightning port nor even a usb-c port and I see that as some downgrade. Not the main reason but this is a reason I got the iPhone 12.

@@JoseFloresEC Lol I switched from a Note 9 too. I had the exynos processor on my note and wanted a phone that was much faster and more optimised. I also love the Face ID and much prefer it to the Iris scanner on the note.

I really appreciated the references to where you gained your knowledge / opinion: The specs of the lightning connection regarding USB 2.0 and mentioning, that you talked to "Magnet People". Even if the latter is still a bit cryptic, it shows the type of research you do and gives your videos more credibility imho.
Then they should not try to invent a problem, just use plain old wired charging, wireless charging is highly inefficient on top of that, so if apple was really worried about env. then a simple move of integrating USBC would solve all problems it would cause less ewaste, it would use more efficient way of charging it, it would not slip way when it is being charged, etc. Not to mention that their design of wireless charger is not modular meaning if you break the cable instead of just buying a new cable if you had wired charging brick you will have to purchase an entire new wireless charger
Lose (as in to be deprived of, or cease to retain the ability to) or Loose (as in detachable or easy to *lose* hold of)? I don't think MagSafe is the real issue here... haha. Assuming you (like most humans) sleep 7-8 hours each day..... if your actual Screen Time is anything over 3.5 hours per day........ might be time to pick up a hobby of some sort.
I really have to say, I’ve been using the MagSafe wallet since Christmas and it has slipped off a couple times but other than those very rare instances, I haven’t had a problem with it
I miss the old MagSafe power adaptors. I had a 2013 Air until last year when I had to upgrade to a new one. Like, I get USB-C being the standard but the MagSafe was just so handy and secure.
Hah my max doesn’t even register my phone and my iTunes library is corrupted on my phone so it skips them. But the song work in my Mac. Apple said it’s cause of Apple Music. Stupid that they can’t act as one thing. I wanted my 50 gigs of cds I’ve collected over the years as the backbone for my music, then use Apple Music to be the rest of the body lol
I do actually use lightning for data when I move out all the images on the phone to the PC or add music to the phone. if they do go port-less a good alternative for wired data transfer would be pogo pins like the one on the Moto Z.
So much this comment! The Moto Z ALSO solved the problem of "things coming off when applying vertical force" by using the camera bump as an additional anchor point to hold the accessories in place. Motorola was lightyears ahead with this stuff and it's a shame they failed with it...
In what reality were a lightening or usb-c charger a hassle to connect? I'd totally get your point, if we were still living in micro-usb world because of how fragile it is.
I used the MagSafe charger on my iPhone 12 Pro and it’s slow and generates a ton of heat. Like, in the morning my phone’s fully charged but still feels warm kinda heat. I don’t think wireless charging can replace wired charging anytime soon because even the most energy efficient setup (ie MagSafe) results in a lot of energy loss through heat etc.
Great video. I'm not convinced of a portless iPhone, in the same way I wasn't convinced that removing the headphone jack was a good idea. Two important uses (besides charging) for the Lightning connection are Apple Car Play (This only works via a wired USB-C to lightning connection in my brand new VW T6.1 for instance and will not work over bluetooth) and data connections that take audio or video over USB (eg I use a USB to Optical Out S/PDIF via the lightning to USB camera adapter with my iPhone). Bluetooth and wireless charging are not the solution to every wired 'problem'.
The RavPower charger looks great. I ordered one instantly. Additionally, this video was incredibly informative about Magsafe. Thank you for taking the time to create the content!
Im loving magsafe charging because i can position the wire to point in a direction that doesn’t get in the way when im reading or gaming whilst charging. Lightning port on bottom always got in the way.
I love the magsafe charger, have been using since I got my 12 pro max (1 week ago). It took 12 minutes to charge my phone from 10% to 60% which is faster than any wireless charger at the same price. I haven't even charged my 12 pro max once using the lighting cable.
Can we just talk about how monumentally dumb the EU forcing all companies to use the same charger is? I mean first of all, there are bound to be countless Apple users who do have lightning cables but don’t have usb c cables, and would need to buy new cords in this legislation aimed at preventing people from having to buy new cords. Oh the irony. Second, imagine if the EU had decided to enact this legislation ~5 years ago. We’d be stuck with micro-usb phones. Who’s to say that in 5-10 years when the next usb does to usb-c what usb-c did to micro-usb that the EU will accept/recognize any potential improvements and let it happen. I have no trust in politicians being able to understand and act on engineering decisions. Not for nothing either because in Australia you can’t change your rims on your car because of some backwards legislation written no doubt by some politician that had zero understanding of why such a law is ridicules.
One other thing to consider is that the efficiency of these wireless chargers depends on how well you position your phone on them. If you put your phone so that the wireless charger and the coil in the phone are not aligned perfectly, it will still work but it will require more power to charge your phone. MagSafe is going to guarantee you place your phone in the right spot on the charger every time.
You’re missing the fact that removing a physical port would make it impossible for people to backup their phone to their computer; thus requiring people pay for iCloud storage. That’s super anti-consumer, and I really hope Apple doesn’t get away with it. Also, what about attempting to recover the device if it gets into a bad state and needs to be restored?
“But that’s probably okay right? because an iPhone isn’t a laptop... and if they do fall they’re more likely to be okay than a laptop” *phone proceeds to bend in half* ...
Frictional Force = Normal Force * Coefficient of Friction , The coefficient of friction between a gloss/glass surface and magsafe products is very low therefore you're right, the only way to increase the amount of force needed to shear the two apart is to A) increase the normal force (stronger magnet) or B) use a material with a higher coefficient of friction.

As soon as I heard about MagSafe, I kept telling people it would be another excuse for Apple to market exclusivity before needing to switch to USB-C, and I don't know if I should be happy or dismayed that you proved my assumption to be correct.
The popularity of wireless charging is a disaster. It is inherently less efficient, both in terms of material costs as well as simple energy. Apple and others pushing for it to be become the society-wide norm is environmentally irresponsible in the extreme.
@@odiltm259 That's a nice whataboutism you got there. Got an actual counterpoint? Local manufacture has advantages that are also ignored by lots of industries, but even then, the raw material tonnage still has to he transported from somewhere. Whether local vs abroad is more efficient is a coinflip, compared to an inherent difference like wireless vs wired.
@@MentalEdge the point of the wireless charging is convenience. If it becomes inconvenient for people to pay their electric bill they will go back to using normal methods. It’s also an infant technique right now and as such doesn’t have the optimization that standard port charging has. But given time it will develop and become more efficient.
@@odiltm259 No. It wont. This is physics. Not the "maturity or infancy of the tech". Power is power. Every time you transform it, you lose some of it. There is no such thing as 100% efficient. Any cable, even, loses some of the power it carries to heat, due to resistance. A port is just a way to make an electrical connection. There is no superfluous transformation there. No tech, that can be less or more optimized. Wireless charging works exactly the same way normal charging does. Except the power gets transformed two more times on the way. Once, to magnetic energy, then again, back to electric energy. All wireless does is bridge a gap in space. The actual form of power at both ends is still just electricity, the power just goes magnetic in-between. That will ALWAYS net a lower efficiency compared to just using the electrical power thru directly, without transformation. There is nothing to "optimize" here. It's physics. It's how the universe and energy works. One is better than the other. Period.
i know i'm 5 months late, but i've used the magsafe wallet. it has never fallen off, EVER. I've used the wallet every single day, putting it in the pocket is no problem, unless you literally push the phone with force down your pocket
The most practical application of magsafe I think it will be a wireless charging holder for the car! Simply getting in your car and throwing your iPhone to a magnetic dock that keeps it in place and charges it, it will be awesome! Also, a magsafe charger glued to my nightstand it will be nice, allowing me to just throw my phone to the charger and knowing it will be aligned perfectly every single time, and at the same time making it easy to grab my phone back without getting the charger with it because it will be glued to the table 🙂
How safe is magsafe though. None of the reviewers cover it, only drop tests on the iPhone. But what happens if someone trips over the cord.... does it work as well as it does on older Mac Books. Snazzy Labs is the only one that has touched on this so far. Well done!! I don't think a lot of people understand what magsafe is and how its supposed to work, or rather why its called mag"SAFE". Apple shouldnt call it magsafe but magcharger or something similar.
@Joseph Dematas False, you can use as many watts as you want provided the voltage is 5V or whichever voltage the battery or device is rated for. The device will only pull as many amps as it’s designed for.
@@draconis3186 that’s not true. My iPhone 7 Plus was “designed” to only be charged on the shitty little 5W brick. I charge my 7 Plus on my wife’s 20W brick she got for her iPhone 12 and it charges 3 times faster. If what you said was true, the charging speed wouldn’t increase on a 20W adapter.
Yep, shear force and magnets is a big deal. Had to deal with this on my last 11 Pro Max since the new phone was too heavy for the magnetic mount I had been using and kept falling off my dashboard. Solution: bigger thicker magnets and a bit more grippy case. Also I use my lightning port ALL the time so taking it away would be bad news for me. USB audio interfaces for music production, USB connection for multicamera in OBS, testing AR filters in Snapchat Lens Studio and Instagram Spark AR. Probably 90%+ of people only use it for charging but for the hard core creatives that really use the devices to their full potential there better be some serious innovation to make wireless tech work with no latency. Especially for audio production.
@@sparten17708 yes but the car has to support it and normally it cannot be retrofit. i bought my car last year with wired apple carplay support and since it is a small car the manufacturer will very likely not offer a upgraded infotainment system with wireless ACP for the car.
Yes 100%, was about to post the same thing. Some will say that there is wireless car-play but that is only a few manufacturers and is unlikely to be rolled out for existing wired units. (Some manufacturers dont even have car-play yet)
There's also an issue with magsafe wallets, as the magnets will screw up your credit card chips that they want you to put in their mag"safe" wallets. A friend of mine has her credit card screwed up due to the magnets at the back of the phone
Forced wireless charging* if it wasn't for wireless charging as a whole i would be fucked cause the charging port is gone on my phone & i prefer wireless charging in my car while im using my phone as gps. Apple just invented a problem
I love the MagSafe charger. I made sure I preordered it and received it a week before my Max and I’m looking forward to the Bellingeri 3 in 1 with mag safe charger
Wireless charging has one big flaw. It shows piss poor charging efficiency compared to a cable charger. Why? Because elctrical current needs to be converted into a magnetic (changing) field in the charger and back into current in the phone. During that conversion, energy is lost - twice. In a cable charger, none of that happens. The current just flows. And this problem is not fixable as it is determined by physics.
Theres a kickstarter which lets you convert your car usb to a wireless CarPlay or Android Auto hub. It’ll be like the usb c transition on mac where you had to buy a dongle for everything.

Yeah and no. Also many people use wireless charging nevertheless so making this alignment by magnets, which increases the effluence a lot, will actually save energy
Not to mention the additional energy required to make the coils inside the phone and the wireless charging pad...
@@weissachpassion the fact that you need a 20W charger to deliver 15W of wireless charging tells you how efficient magsafe is... magnets and all.
I guess we'll also have to give you an ethernet port on your phone for your internet. I on the other hand, prefer anything wireless (most of the time), except when it comes to my speakers. The subwoofer is fine to be wireless. Charging wirelessly is fine too and you don't need it to be super fast.
it can also affect the longevity/capacity of your battery.

On a more serious note: While Xcode already supports WiFi debugging, it is less stable and slower than Lightning. the part about improving stickiness with rubber is true. I bought a MagSafe case that is rubberized. The wallet sticks to it better because of it. I previously had a hard plastic case, and the wallet would slide off often because it had less friction than the rubber case. The friction makes all the difference.
Magsafe is a solution for a problem that didn't exist. And its function is to create more problems so they can sell solutions for those.

if you can't use it in bed while charging it would loose 80% of how I use a phone.

If it’s dark, like right before you go to bed, putting your phone on a wireless charger is a hassle. MagSafe fixes that
In what reality were a lightening or usb-c charger a hassle to connect? I'd totally get your point, if we were still living in micro-usb world because of how fragile it is.
It's like the Mous wallet (which is the first magnet wallet i can think of). They have a little sticky bit.
The original and second gen Mac mag safe was one of the greatest things Apple ever did.

Getting rid of the charging port is going to end jailbreaking forever, and that really bums me out.

EU: you can't keep using lightning
Apple: Magsafe? :D

In a way, if the EU legislation becomes law, then I hope the legislation actually forces apple to put a USB C port (or whatever port) on the Iphones

The popularity of wireless charging is a disaster. It is inherently less efficient, both in terms of material costs as well as simple energy. Apple and others pushing for it to be become the society-wide norm is environmentally irresponsible in the extreme.

There is no such thing
as 100% efficient.
Period.

And once your app gets a bit bigger in size, even deployment takes ages.
