Apple: We're going to save the environment by not shipping out power bricks! Also Apple: We're going to ship out USB C only cables that most of our customers can't even use!
Oh please God, don't ship me another power brick. I've got 6 of the damn things within 3 meters of my desk. And particularly don't ship me any goddamned wired earphones. Thank you! By the way the big savings is on the containers used to ship 225 million phones per year. Big carbon reduction to go along with the already impressive renewable energy for all Apple buildings including data centers. Where's Google on that? How about Amazon or shit Facebook? Anybody home?
@@bruxi78230 Lol, I was just talking about how shipping people a useless cable sort of counteracts their goal of saving the planet by not shipping power bricks. Yea it's not useless, but 70% of their customers can't even use it as is.
@@acehobojoe ------ Yeah, of course I don't know what the percentage is, but USB-C has been on the laptops since 2015 and high-speed charger blocks have been around on the iPad since 2017. So I guess I'd be surprised if 50% of so didn't already have the high-speed charging blocks. Wouldn't be surprised if next year they went portless, the MagSafe bit on the back of the iPhones appears to be a big hint.
Yeah I imagine they’re expecting this to be used as a charge-and-sync cable on their MacBooks and iMacs, rather than using a dedicated power brick. Personally I’m fine with that except that I don’t want to devote one of my two USB-C ports to just my iPhone (especially since I usually charge via Qi and sync via Wi-Fi). So I’ll probably just keep using my existing plethora of USB-A cables, and only use the C-to-lightning cable when I travel... if that’s ever a thing again.
Apple brags about how many chargers are already out in the world and how many earphones, ignores that most of those use a standard 1/8" jack (which they eliminated) and the chargers have USB-A sockets, not USB-C, so now everyone will have to buy new ones. *facepalm*
Totally agree with your breakdown of the event. A few things I think you didn’t mentions is that the Pro models start at 128 gigs of storage, giving them a bit more value. Also if you want to get an unlocked 12 or 12 mini, it’s going to cost you another 30 bucks. Seems like the 12 is the best value in a long time in a IPhone.
Thank you for speaking some sense to the 120Hz ordeal. This is my thought exactly. People may not even realise how screens work, what refresh rate is etc. But people feel it, they naturally gravitate towards apple devices because they feel "smoother". I hear this all the time. This is due to apples excessive motion blur and great frame pacing in their GUI. A 120Hz screen will absolutely be the simplest, most effective way to improve that experience. It is something that EVERYONE will be able to appreciate instantly. It doesn't matter if you're tech savvy or not, you will notice it, it is extremely noticeable and hugely beneficial. I'd take it over 5G, dolby vision, a third camera, stainless steel frames etc. Saying that regular people don't care is just wrong.
I think the big question for me, is how does the wide-angle lens on iPhone 12 cropped in at 2x compare with the telephoto lens on iPhone 12 Pro? I know with older iPhones, the XS for example, the iPhone would sometimes _default_ to the wide-angle lens at 2x instead of using the true telephoto lens because the wider aperture on the wide-angle lens performed better in low light. As a result, the wide-angle lens cropped at 2x would be sharper than the telephoto lens.
@@Splackavellie85 No Apple didn't do it first, but their uneducated customer base will, which is a shame. It happens all the time And Moto Mods launch was pretty great. Plus the phones always came with a free Moto Mod. I wouldn't say it was terrible, but it definitely could've been better.
differences between 12 pro and the 12 that were not mentioned 6GB of RAM vs 4GB (likely to support 60 fps real-time HDR video and ProRAW processing, among other things, although still unconfirmed) 128GB starting capacity vs 64GB (the price difference becomes less when you consider storage) still upset about the lack of 120hz displays though :/
thought they would for sure do it this year as Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi etc. did all of the stuff Apple does and more for cheaper... Also now that Samsung had teamed up with ARM to make better Exynos chips (better than the current bets snapdragon 865+) Apple's unique chip won't be something other android phones can't achieve (not to mention that the power of the chip is kinda overkill with a 60 hz screen both now and before when they used a worse hd and now fhd oled).
@@teku69420 also thought so too cuz of all the 120Hz testing leaks, but I guess they couldn't put it in in time without sacrificing battery... i'm sure they would do it next year when they perfect their LTPO adaptive refresh rate displays for more efficient use of battery life along with the smart data mode for 5G and such
This is not true. Just checked the pricing page. Edit: even though I’m getting an unlocked phone, the app saw I was using ATT/VZW and showed the discounted pricing. OP is correct.
I'm going for the regular iPhone 12 Pro in 256GB and Pacific Blue. I have completely skipped the notched iPhones thus far so it's gonna be a completely new experience for me. Pretty excited about it
Exactly, and when Google brought out their new Pixel 5 with the snapdragon 750G (slower than the Pixel 4!) they should have reduced the price to like $500. $600 for a slower phone is just stupid, you can get a used Pixel 4 for that price. These bigger manufacturers need to bring out more premium phones at lower prices, barely anyone actually needs the newest specs and will notice a difference when they get the thing. My sister has the iPhone X and when going head to head with my old iPhone 6s it's literally neck and neck.
Me too. It’s the first time in a long time I’actually interested in buying a new iPhone. All iPhones since the first SE were kinda interesting from a technological point of view, but I was never tempted to buy them, due to their size.
I used my SE 1 up until March and was going to hold off until now, but I was having to charge it 2-3 times a day. I love my 8 plus and it’s great battery life, but it’s just too big at times. The 12 mini has basically the same screen size and resolution, so it seems rather tempting because I miss having a tiny phone.
Using mag safe on my 2015 MacBook Pro now. It’s a firm connection, I can’t remember mine ever being disrupted, never falls off, and always reliable. My son has the similar one on his surface pro which isn’t as strongly connected as the MacBook. Shame apple got rid of it. It’s still great. Not sure how great it will be for iPhones though. I’m scratching my head, but hope it will be as great as the AirPods were when they were mocked initially.
Quinn: i've seen Linus and Marques review.... your's the most entretaining! Guess you can call BS (like that wallet system) without being called a Apple Hater
I totally agree with your point about 120 Hz displays making a device feel faster. When I purchased my 2020 iPad Pro, I couldn't figure out why my iPhone X suddenly felt sooooo slow by comparison. I even did side-by-side comparisons with the two, launching apps, etc. While the iPad Pro is faster--it's not that much faster...launching apps is nearly identical. But the 120 Hz display gives the feeling of speed when interacting with the device that makes it feel so much engaging to use.
Do you actually want a chunkier iphone ? You need a big battery for it. Apple won't do it if they can't make it perfect. I use 60hz for my 120hz phone because of the battery increase.
@@blakeok952 they made the phones smaller. If they kept the same size, they could have fit a slightly bigger battery (and also take out the camera bump)

I agree with your points, especially about the 120hz that regular people can feel even though they can't articulate what actually making their phone seems fluid and faster.
It's just a puck that has magnets like a wireless charger that just clips on the back of the phone. The onlt reason Apple will remove the port is to improve security (by just not having any external access point at all) and improve water resistance
@@Γιάννης-ξ8μ the iPhone also have magnets inside but you don’t need thick magnets to create a strong magnetic connection especially at neodymium level, lightning is likely going to stay even if it gets relegated to a hidden port like on the Apple Watch as they need a diagnostics port if there is serious os failure. The external lightning port likely won’t be removed until they have some feature they can implement that they could advertise as worth removing the port. The loss of 3.5 mm jack was the advertisement of water resistance and while it got blowback apple had something to point at as what people got in return. It likely won’t happen for at least 2 years as MagSafe showed wireless charging to the public they need time for public adoption, wireless charging outside of the tech community is still relatively low.

How so, considering that all Macs have USB C and most PC laptops these days have USB C, how is it a troll move? So many people have USB C chargers or Qi chargers these days, hell even my Jeep Cherokee has USB C. So where is this troll move you’re talking about?
@@protaginets Tell me, would you use your Mac and Jeep Cherokee to charge your iPhone all the time? Every other person needs a power brick to do that, and usb c power bricks are very uncommon since all devices use usb a for standardisation. Apple is essentially selling you a niche cable that requires an apple charger brick with type c, which they sell for 20 dollars, so they're ripping you off.
@@protaginets the phones have USB c, but barely any phone comes with a USB c power adapter. Really the only people who would have a USB c adapter would be someone who recently got a new phone this year and would be out of the market for the new iphone. They upped the price for the 12 all while removing the essential accessory that's a literal requirement to get the phone to work, forcing you to spend more money on a new charger. In most cases, yes. A two hand operation unless you have the magnet mounted to something fixed like a suction cup mount like in a car and you can simply pull it off without the worry of the charger falling or staying on the phone.

i have both, the first and the last ipad pro, both with a 120Hz display. i can see a slight difference in a side-by-side comparison, but it’s *absolutely not* something i would notice while switching back and forth to a 60Hz display (iphone 11).
I ditched my iPhone after my iPhone 4, because iOS was just getting too scattered in my opinion. it had lost the "tightness" and intuitiveness that it debuted with. I switched to a Windows phone (HTC OneM8 for Windows) When that died, I unwillingly went over to Android, and I've been there ever since. The iPhone 12 mini might get me back though, because I've hated the large phones I've been forced to use these past few years. I'm not a gamer, I have no need for a high quality camera, I just want something I can put in my pocket and forget about. The tiny form factor ALONE might be enough to go back to iOS.
I agree, my favourite phone has been the iPhone 4 but the biggest upgrade was going from the iphone 5 to the iphone 6 with just the form factor and screen size and again to the iphone X/ 11's larger screen
About the HDR: I have a hope that when the crowd of hamsters will start demanding the videos to look the same across all the devices - it will give a push for proper HDR to become a common option in consumer products. Although, I'm very skeptical that the phone can grade the video to make it proper HDR, not mentioning Dolby Vision.
HDR, photo stacking, isn't new, it's a really old photography technique but most cameras don't do because it kills tonality resulting in a "flat" image, or lacking in contrast.
On top of that the release their "Pro" RAW which also includes all their stupid s/w optimisations & what not, what's the point of RAW then if they want to mess around with it anyway.
Blank Name you are talking about stills hdr. But hdr in video is very different. Your comment shows how little people know about this. In short it is display quality catching up to video capturing capability. Displaying more “stops” or levels of light then regular displays going from 7 stops at 100 nits of brightness to 12 stopt at 1000 nits of brightness. While high end video cameras can record +17 stops of dynamic range. Personally I am very excited for this. Showing a hdr video next to a sdr video really is a big difference. (Also color benefit) :)

Nice overview! Thank you! I think, for some folks, having 5G on these phones is a plus feature. And not because they happen to live next to a telephone pole with a 5G antenna! A lot of people keep their iPhone for many years. Everyone in our family is still rocking an iPhone 6s+. When you keep your phones for that many years it's really nice to have technology on-board that future proofs things. Anyway, just one man's opinion.
I’ve purchased a 12 Pro as I’m upgrading from an XR, so even though the camera system is comparable to the 11, it will be a vast improvement for me (and lots of other upgraders). Also, both 12 pro models are speculated to have 6GB of ram, over 4GB in the regular models, so software lockouts could still be down to hardware differences + requirements (classic Apple). I enjoyed the video. Thanks 👍🏻
Thank you for pointing out that the Pro models should be aluminum... or perhaps a hyperalloy endoskeleton? I won't be able to charge my phone when it arrives without a charger... well, I think I have an old QI charger from 2016. I got your dig at them that not many people (especially not the numbers they were throwing around) have a charger with a USB-C connector. You summed up the series pretty good. Mini will be popular. The 12 Pro Max might be worth the money for the badass cameras. So since it's been 4 years since I've bought a new phone, I'm going with the 12 Pro Max, 256GB. I'll keep it for a long time and be happy with some really great photo shooting capabilities. Stay Snazzy Quinn!
Hi Quinn! As Luke Miani pointed out in his video regarding iPhone pricing. You will find in the Apple website that the regular iPhone 12 is actually USD 879 (with no contract and 128GB), making the 12 PRO a little more appealing for that difference. Greetings from Argentina.
Smart HDR, Night-Mode, and the overall post-processing capabilities of the iPhone are amazing... Combining that potential with the power of RAW file's detail and image info preservation... I feel ProRaw will make a BIG difference in photo quality.

1000% agree with people FEELING the difference with 120hz screens. I have the same argument when people tell me that they only want to HEAR a movie and a nice sound system doesnt matter. It’s subtle… but is DOES matter.
Apple is giving a USB-C to lightning cable with the new phones. Most people, including Android users, don’t have an adapter for that because, barring iPhone 11 Pro, none of the previous Apple devices came with a USB-C adapter...ever. So if you want to use the cable, you will have to buy a new adapter. And if you decide to charge with older adapter, it will be slow charging and you will be left with one useless cable (wow, such environment). Basically, they are forcing younto buy a new adapter one way or the other without passing on the benefits to customers. And giving environmental reasons is straight up scummy by a company who is so much anti-repair. This is a SCAM and it needs to be called out. Having said that, the iPhone 12 Mini was the best launch yesterday.
USB-A chargers can't handle the charging speeds that USB-C can. USB-C has also been on iPad and Macbook for over a year now, and both came with chargers. Not to mention tons of non-Apple devices use USB-C, and the iPhone is supposed to move to USB-C next year. It's a bit of a rip-off not getting one in the box, but the switch is way overdue.
@@Studio23Media You clearly didn’t get my point. I didn’t say USB-C is bad. Also, USB-A can handle charging fine. There are $200 android phones that come with 65w chargers with USB-A on the adapter. Also, most adapters come with USB-A so people are most likely going to have to buy them. And the iPhone doesn’t have a USB-C, it’s still lightning.
@@sush2142 No, USB-A can only handle up to 15w. Anything over that needs USB-C. You can get chargers that can put out 65w and have a USB-A port, but that USB-A port is not rated at 65w. And there are only a few phones that can handle 65w charging, definitely not a $200 phone. 😂
We all knew the absence of the power brick was coming, but it was rich that their justification for doing so was basically "Everyone has a power brick already" only to then announce the USB-C cable and all those "billions of power bricks out in the world" that they were bragging about just became useless
Damn, that's a bit of a bummer. I was planning on getting an iPhone 12 and keeping it for a few years, but now that you mention it I think next year's models will have 120 hz, so that would be annoying.
This is the same argument I have been making to the 5G evangelists. Since when do you need that much bandwidth on your phone? I never download "files" to my mobiles devices just stream content. Anymore than 15mbs is enough to watch TH-cam and Netflix in the highest res for a phone.
I currently have an iPhone 7 Plus, so it's kind of a no-brainer for me to upgrade to an iPhone 12. But I am disappointed that the better camera is on the Pro Max.
If you buy the iPhones from Apple themselves they are not locked what do you mean?
Saying that regular people don't care is just wrong.
they should have added it to the pro models to make the pro moniker actually make sense.
As a result, the wide-angle lens cropped at 2x would be sharper than the telephoto lens.

thought they would for sure do it this year as Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi etc. did all of the stuff Apple does and more for cheaper...

Finally somebody pointing out the small differences between the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro and the camera differences between the Pro and Pro Max
We really need more small phones, why does every phone have to be a spec race
Agree.
Not exactly a small phone and expensive but I went with the Samsung 5g flip, it’s something different and very pocketable.

Me too. It’s the first time in a long time I’actually interested in buying a new iPhone. All iPhones since the first SE were kinda interesting from a technological point of view, but I was never tempted to buy them, due to their size.
Amazing choice!

But the 120 Hz display gives the feeling of speed when interacting with the device that makes it feel so much engaging to use.
i found it hilarious they named the even Speed, yet they didn't get the most recognised Speed which is 120 Refresh Rate

Just one question. Won't the Magsafe with its magnets use more volume inside a phone than a lightning port? 🤔🤔

Apple putting the USB-C jack on the other end of the cable, that goes into the charging brick, is the ultimate troll move. Lol.

Really enjoyed your honest take on the line up, getting beyond the marketing fluff!
You forgot to mention the use of lidar in low light situations. Faster autofocus in both photo and video.
Also! Being able to record in Dolby Vision 10 friggi’n bits HDR @60 FPS is actually pretty spectacular. ESPECIALLY if you, like me, owns an Oled Tv (65” LG C9, ÄH!😉)
Your lighting in this one is fantastic! A vibe for sure. Well done!
The LiDAR sensor in the iPhone 12 also helps with better autofocus in darker situations
I watched almost every tech reviewers take on the new iphone12 and none of them had this much detail and yes 120 hz should have been there.
