I feel like they could've done really well if Richard acted as the face of the country, keeping morale up, while Simon worked to keep the country stable behind the scenes. They honestly could've done well with that system.
I agree that Richard is the morale booster and goes to talk with the people of the Kingdom and Simon is the one who keeps the country and Kingdom afloat and stable.

Exactly my thoughts- Simon does really well with all the critical stuff in the country and Richard can actually communicate to the people what Simon's doing.
Here's the difference between Richard and Simon, Richard never wanted the responsibilities of the King, only wanted to get the girl and have fun. Simon on the hand actually wanted the job and cared about the well being of the kingdom, people. But his actions looked sneaky so no one really believed him or even wanted to give him a chance. I kinda wish they didn't make Simon the villain cause he doesn't even look like a villain, it's not like he was manipulating people or trying to get them harmed. He was very blunt about his goals and didn't lie unlike the main characters.

It's especially egregious because the whole reason they covered up the fact that he was adopted in the first place was because they wanted him to be a legitimate heir. But... apparently they could have changed the law to include adopted children as heirs the whole time, so yeah, why cover up the adoption???

Why did Simon want to be king though? Was it because he truly wanted to help the country and had a sense of altruism or was it because he wanted what Richard had? It’s not about the ambition itself, it’s about the motive and how he was willing to step on his own cousin to get ahead instead of, I dunno, discussing it with his cousin first behind closed doors. He totally humiliated Richard and loved every second of it.

To be fair, Simon does get his status as a Duke restored by the end of the trilogy and is more or less redeemed in the eyes of the Royal Family. Jenny Nicholson did a video a year ago about these movies saying the country is locked in a perpetual Christmas apocalypse. She even dives into the subtleties of costume design. I highly recommend it and her channel. Also noteworthy is that all of Film Theory's screenshots of Amber had her looking unhappy. Makes you wonder how happy the characters really are in these "holiday romance" movies.
Plot twist: the curse is real, and it still affected Amber's child. And in the fourth movie, the child grows up, murders both Richard and Amber, and Simon must save Aldovia from the maniac child.

Except almost nowhere in the world monarchy does keep real power. In most cases king has purely representative, role with government and parlament being largely independent bodies (so basically a democracy).

More like shes just an out right criminal and who then got roped into a birth scandal involving her crush and also helped nearly put the entire kingdom into chaos and war. The stupidity of people, displayed finely in these movies.
Me and my mum had a lovely time watching the 1st movie, not for the plot but for the continuity errors in 1 particular scene here scarf keeps magically moving and her sleeve keeps going up and down, once we noticed this we couldn't stop laughing. One of my fav memories
Simon seems like the guy who should, in any normal kingdom that apparently still uses horseback armies with spears and banners, become king. He is smart, a good manager of finance, a reliable man who appears when needed, and, you know, diplomatic.
To me the worst thing the protagonists did was probably the economic disaster and the many lives that got upended all thanks to the king's focus on his personal interests over the kingdoms. Even if didn't trust his cousin, he could have hired someone else who knew economics (after running a background check on said person) and listened to their advice. Maybe even hire multiple people and compare their advice
Well you can see in the movies at least he doesn’t have a decreasing hairline because you can clearly tell Richard hairline keep going back while Simmons is just very prominently there
I remember when this episode premiere and Matpat make the joke of: “none is gonna what this episode” I genially told myself: I will Matpat, because you made it, because you are on it. Coming from the future, I now know that I love this channel not only because of Matpat but because of the whole Theorist team. I love the editing, specially the Easter eggs they hide, I love the format, how every one of the members have their own touch when they are in an episode, everything. This is really a good example of how being a good person alone doesn't make you a good leader. Sure a ruler shouldn't be a bad person but one of the most important things is to be someone with the ability to do it. Or at least realize where they are lacking and be willing to learn and take advice but even then if they're also a bad judge of character...
I want to see a movie like this where the prince who doesn’t want the throne, just doesn’t. Simon gets the throne, the country thrives, and the prince and the lead girl get to live the comfortable life, and play the loving royal couple. They are the face of the country, but not as rulers, as mascots. Simon runs the show and they do all the charismatic stuff that Simon isn’t good at.

To be fair, Simon does get his status as a Duke restored by the end of the trilogy and is more or less redeemed in the eyes of the Royal Family.
Even still I find it ridiculous that no one would listen to or trust him in the second or even the third movie as he shows repeatedly he legitimately cares about the wellbeing of the kingdom but whatever.

Jenny Nicholson did a video a year ago about these movies saying the country is locked in a perpetual Christmas apocalypse. She even dives into the subtleties of costume design. I highly recommend it and her channel.

To me the worst thing the protagonists did was probably the economic disaster and the many lives that got upended all thanks to the king's focus on his personal interests over the kingdoms. Even if didn't trust his cousin, he could have hired someone else who knew economics (after running a background check on said person) and listened to their advice. Maybe even hire multiple people and compare their advice

This is really a good example of how being a good person alone doesn't make you a good leader. Sure a ruler shouldn't be a bad person but one of the most important things is to be someone with the ability to do it. Or at least realize where they are lacking and be willing to learn and take advice but even then if they're also a bad judge of character...
I want to see a movie like this where the prince who doesn’t want the throne, just doesn’t. Simon gets the throne, the country thrives, and the prince and the lead girl get to live the comfortable life, and play the loving royal couple. They are the face of the country, but not as rulers, as mascots. Simon runs the show and they do all the charismatic stuff that Simon isn’t good at.
I think that is a much better ending for everyone involved.
