I found this video in my sleep. I fell asleep in the morning and I apparently rolled over a few times
Here's the difference between Richard and Simon, Richard never wanted the responsibilities of the King, only wanted to get the girl and have fun. Simon on the hand actually wanted the job and cared about the well being of the kingdom, people. But his actions looked sneaky so no one really believed him or even wanted to give him a chance. I kinda wish they didn't make Simon the villain cause he doesn't even look like a villain, it's not like he was manipulating people or trying to get them harmed. He was very blunt about his goals and didn't lie unlike the main characters.
Let's just hope the next movie will include Simon leading a worker revolution to Change the monarchy to a communist regime leaded by Simon.

I feel like they could've done really well if Richard acted as the face of the country, keeping morale up, while Simon worked to keep the country stable behind the scenes. They honestly could've done well with that system.

there are reasons why monarchies aren't always viable.
besides the vatican is an absolute monarchy under the pope who when brought to power becomes the king and can do whatever he wants due to there being no stable population

She literally had the callback dates changed so they couldn't make it. She wasnt really concerned with anyone other than herself. She also tries to gain troys affection with special treatment and connections despite him being with Gabriella. Like its really okay to purposely meddle in someone's relationship? Not to mention the way she walks over her own brother and tried to get all the other people to quit because all she cared about was troy.

....honestly this felt less like a theory and more like a rant and a summary rolled into one semi-passive aggressive package. I love it, so much. The entire tone of the video was just like "the actual AUDACITY these movies had, lemme tell you" and it was great.

Except almost nowhere in the world monarchy does keep real power. In most cases king has purely representative, role with government and parlament being largely independent bodies (so basically a democracy).

Jenny Nicholson did a video a year ago about these movies saying the country is locked in a perpetual Christmas apocalypse. She even dives into the subtleties of costume design. I highly recommend it and her channel.
Also noteworthy is that all of Film Theory's screenshots of Amber had her looking unhappy. Makes you wonder how happy the characters really are in these "holiday romance" movies.

This is like my 5th time watching it
Well, when he said no one's gonna watch it, it actually triggered my spite and I was so close to give it 10 million views... but then I was to lazy... xD

Me and my mum had a lovely time watching the 1st movie, not for the plot but for the continuity errors in 1 particular scene here scarf keeps magically moving and her sleeve keeps going up and down, once we noticed this we couldn't stop laughing. One of my fav memories
Simon seems like the guy who should, in any normal kingdom that apparently still uses horseback armies with spears and banners, become king. He is smart, a good manager of finance, a reliable man who appears when needed, and, you know, diplomatic.
To me the worst thing the protagonists did was probably the economic disaster and the many lives that got upended all thanks to the king's focus on his personal interests over the kingdoms. Even if didn't trust his cousin, he could have hired someone else who knew economics (after running a background check on said person) and listened to their advice. Maybe even hire multiple people and compare their advice

This is really a good example of how being a good person alone doesn't make you a good leader. Sure a ruler shouldn't be a bad person but one of the most important things is to be someone with the ability to do it. It's not Richard's fault that the country had economic problems. He did the math, but Leopold embezzled the money instead of investing it into Aldovian countries like it was supposed to. He's only guilty of trusting Leopold during his first year of kingship where Leopold, remember, played king in the interim after Richard senior's death and was supposed to mentor Richard junior.
He still could've punished Leopold and returned the money to his kingdom if he wasn't as incompetent as he's portrayed here. Unless I'm missing something....

Joz I’m not sure what generation, but their both in their 50’s with my dad almost turning 60. My mom likes hallmarks and some action movies which is rare, but my dad and I love John Wick, the equalizer, etc... and I recently got him started on Breaking Bad

With my parents, my dad and stepdad are the ones that got *me* into video games since they were both gamers for as long as I can remember, with my dad preferring skateboarding and sports games and RPGs while my step dad played a lot of RTSs and FPSs.

Well, I've watched this type of movies a lot when I had a really bad couple of months before ... I have no desire to watch them now that I feel better over all and I wouldn't make assumptions about other people's mental state that leads them to watching this type of movie. People find a lot of odd things entertaining or at least relaxing 😅 at least "hallmark" romance won't give you nightmares or occupy your mind afterwards

I wouldn't say it out loud but I know for a fact that if I was to watch this movie with my family I would just keep thinking how Simon is more fit for it then Richard the supposedly perfect fit for King.

A paycheck is a paycheck. I don't begrudge anyone a job, even in a bad movie, unless it's some kind of evil propaganda. These Christmas movies aren't THAT bad.
Why could the change the law for their adopted son BUT NOT FOR THEIR LEGITIMATE DAUGHTER?
So let's see;
*Movie 1:* The prince forgoes his duties and obligations becasue he would rather do something else
*Movie 2:* The prince's economic plans have bankrupted and foreclosed the nation, and neither him nor his wife can be bothered to care because #peasentproblems and the real focus is giving the young princess a play, not the thousands of workers with no jobs or means and a failing country...which apparently never gets resolved either
*Movie 3:* Even after an important treaty with another nation goes missing, which could lead to a state of war, neither the prince nor princess can be bothered to care until it's revealed that by allowing the treaty to fail, then their child might be cursed for it...so then it becomes their problem only after the "royal" family is threatened personally...

Everyone invested in the Netflix Christmas cinematic universe knows that Simon would have been a far superior ruler, but a theory I’d love to hear about is the connections between The Knight Before Christmas and The Christmas Prince series

Now they should make a movie from Simon POV to show how he was treated for his hard work and then he should go on to dethrone those cheesy couples. A perfect trilogy. A vengeance plot. Mhhmmgg

Simon did deserve a happy ending and also The Christmas Prince is a great drinking game. Drink when they say, “Christmas” or “Prince”, you’re welcome. (Second one: “Wedding”, third one: “Baby”)
I saw glimpses of this movie while I was working on my computer and my mom was watching this on tv nearby, I saw the orphan snowball fight scene and had to react with force because of how dumb the prince was choosing snowball fights over a very important job that will affect many people that isn't even demanding or labor-intensive in any way.
I could clearly see the writers wanting to portray the prince as this lovable carefree and goofy prince who just loves to be with his people....but failed really hard.

Side theory: Netflix is creating a Christmas universe aristocracy class, with this series and The Princess Switch, maybe more.
When I was forced to watch these movies, I noticed how well the “knightly order” medals were done(the medals worn on the left side of the chest), some look incredibly close to current orders, such as order of the garter etc. But I couldn’t find any that actually matched, just really close, but the orders Richard is apart of are the same ones Edward is part of.
Basically Netflix has a secret English accent, English speaking, Eastern European aristocracy, which has members in numerous royal families and sovereign monarchs which also somehow survived soviet occupation. I think this is a dangerously under-told story (Given that Aldovia apparently owned Constantinople once, also raises questions about the Turks and so many other questions but is another issue entirely)
This community is surprisingly well crafted.

....or they are simply reusing props as a means of saving budget for other things like locations etc.

I’ve actually noticed that in franchises like books, movies, shows etc with a guy it’s the blonde/light haired who’s strong and charming who gets the girl and all that and the dark haired, smart one doesn’t. But with females it’s the opposite, the blonde ones a rich sassy mean girl and then there’s a dark haired sarcastic emo girl and she gets the guy.

Agree about the girls. But the boys is more random tho. They usually go for the misterious dark haired guy for the main character
I got interested in romantic stories (books, tv series, movies) at the time when all girls in hero roles were either blonde or redheads with blue/green eyes. This was considered the standard of beauty. I have dark hair and dark eyes. Hated the standard with all my heart. At least now it’s more diverse.

I realized when I was watching “The Knight Before Christmas”, while decorating the tree in the movie on of the characters mentions that an ornament they have was from Aldovia it makes me wonder if they are going to make a Christmas movie cinematic universe-

if you look at the map at 7:15 you’ll notice that belgravia, the country in The Princess Switch is one of aldovia’s neighbouring countries. seeing as both countries are fictional, this proves that they exist in the same universe.
