While his strategy is clever, it's not really that complicated. At the end of the day this strategy only works if you are more knowledgeable than your opponent. His breadth and depth of knowledge is really what is impressive to me.
I mean, its just logic. Knowledge = more money. Betting on the big bucks and stuff, switching categories, and all of his tactic would mean absolutely nothing if he didnt spend a year learning trivial stuff.u can have and use all tactic u want, but if u aren't doing good with that trivial stuff, you'll just lose the game.
Yeah, even just about three years later, you can already see that others are using his strategies, starting at the bottom and jumping between catigories.
I used his strategy for a jeopardy review game in science class, though I modified it so that I start at 600/800 and only go for 800/1000 that early in the game if I'm really that confident with the topic I feel like everyone caught on to what I was doing and was trying to emulate it themselves so it was basically fair game all around lol
Hey MatPat another reason James was so good was the way he hit the buzzer. Most players would spam the button before you were able to ring it, which would give a small penalty making the buzzer inactive for like half a second. James however, would time it up just right so as soon as you were able to hit the buzzer, he hit it, making him be the one to answer the questions.
I like how this isn't even focusing on the most impressive aspect: his near encyclopedic knowledge of all things. Even if I cheated and used the internet I couldn't answer most of these questions correctly
So I originally started this post with the sentence "The interesting thing is you don't need an encyclopedic knowledge of all topics for jeopardy." I read the phrase in your post metaphorically as it was probably meant - an in-depth repository of knowledge of an impossibly large number of things all in one place. Except now after writing the whole explanation as to why that's not necessary, it's now hit me that 'encyclopedic knowledge' is EXACTLY what you need for jeopardy, because encyclopedias actually don't go into a ton of detail. They are good sources for a wide amount of knowledge but don't really get super deep - and that's exactly what you want to be a jeopardy champion. I read a bit about it back when Ken Jennings was the god-tier jeopardy player people were discussing, but it turns out an in-depth knowledge of the topics would actually be detrimental. See since jeopardy is ultimately about getting ratings and keeping people watching they want to make the audience feel smart (but not too smart). Notice how when you're sitting watching a game of jeopardy you can usually answer two or three questions on the board? That's by design - they want EVERYONE to have that experience. From all walks of life. at least some of the time. The questions are thus tailored to what 'the average person might know' about that topic - since there's so many topics most people won't know most questions, but since the answers don't require super in-depth knowledge most people will know at least one of the questions. Jennings actually created an algorithm to quiz himself this way as preparation, to cover what 'average people know' about every topic under the sun. This is also hinted at in this video when MatPat mentiond James Holzhauer's method was studying childrens books. That is an AMAZING method of cutting through the nonsense extra technical knowledge to get only at stuff that might actually be quizzed on the show - no one is going to bore a child with the extra stuff, it'll be distilled to simple facts that everyone can understand. The exact kind of facts that'll be asked about on Jeopardy. TLDR: Jeopardy's not very deep. Focusing on casting your net of knowledge wide but shallow is the best way to become a god tier jeopardy player
@@GiftedContractor You absolutely hit the nail on the head. I do scholars bowl/quiz bowl at my high school (which is basically jeopardy but in a team of 4) and the parents marvel at how much everyone on these kinds of teams knows. But it's actually really easy if you cast your net wide, know the "bullet points"/"buzzwords" of topics, and systematically repeat things to get them in your head.

Its actually much easier to learn from children's books as the information in them is written to be interesting, rather than reading an informational book on the same topic written for adults.
In children's books they tend to explain things in ways that are both memorable and informative. Like in a book for adults, it would explain the phases of the moon in long overly complicated sentences that are hard to remember and comprehend. Meanwhile in a children's book it would cut to the chase and just tell you what and how it happens in much less words and still make it memorable with pictures or fun descriptions. Lets think of it like this, are you going to remember a wall of text over-explaining how to tackle someone or would you remember a picture and simplified words better? Books for adults tend to over-explain the smallest of details and constantly leave you wanting instead of flat out saying what they mean. In other words, they use superfluous vocabulary that is inconsequential and does not pertain to the actual situation or subject at hand whatsoever. (They use pointless big words that are pretty much useless and doesn't actually help anyone.)
I'm just glad that Alex was able to witness the greatest Jeopardy player in history before his passing. He probably thought he would never live to see someone break Ken Jennings record.
You’re also not considering his intentional hunting for daily doubles. He specifically chose questions that were statistically most likely to be Daily Doubles
It's an extremely well known bit of his tactic. It'll very likely be in the next part. But either way, telling someone they are "not considering" something when you know there is more to come is kinda rude.
Back in 2012, I was a contestant. And I had the exact same strategy planned. But then the show started and it all became real very quickly, once I got control of the board, I ended up picking questions based upon the category more than the dollar value. I was up against a younger champion who was very good and very fadt on the button. I almost beat her in Final Jeopardy. Unless you have been there, you have no idea what the experience is like. The reason why a typical champion only lasts a few episodes is that it is exhausing, physically, mentslly and emotionally. Five shows are taped each day. The set is incredibly hot. Your brain is going 1000 miles an hour, nothing exists except the game. Every contestant gets a picture with Alex Trebek. It happens during a commercial break. One of the assistant producers had to tap me on the shoulder to tell me that Alex was standing right next to me for our photo, I was so involved, I didn’t see him. Every once in a while, someone with icewater in their veins becomes a contestant and goes on a run. They are not, necessarily, more knowledgeable, they just have a sort of detatchment that allows them to remain completely cool and get over the hump to the place where their experience becomes a formidable advantages over the challengers who are, basically, thrown into the deep end to either sink or swim. Is the show “rigged”. No, it is not, in my opinion. There are strict rules, the contestants have a lawyer who represents them, and the staff went put of their way to make us all comfortable and, in my opinion, showed no favoritism to anyone.
Robert Chavez - I came in second. I “won” $2000. But since contestants have to pay their own expenses, I look at it this way: I won a vacation in LA and Las Vegas (where we went after the taping). Not a bad deal at all.
That beginning sounded like one of those articles that are like “This is how one man broke every toilet. Scientists hate him! Find out he did it with this one trick!”
Re: Daily Doubles. There seems to be a difficult time separating the dollars of the show from the dollars of real life. The score a player has is not a dollar amount. It is a total of points with a dollar sign in front of it. Why is this? Because you ONLY get that money if you win, meaning that the goal is to win the game, not preserve or maximize one's dollar total. James was very good at understanding that, that money on his podium is not real until the game is over.
I found it strange how you mentioned his year-long, in-depth preparation routine prior to being on Jeopardy, and even his buzzer accuracy, but not how he trained for the buzzer. He has stated that he studied from a book written by a former Jeopardy contestant called “The Art of The Buzzer,” or something like that. What he learned from it was how to anticipate Alex’s speech pattern/ cadence at the end of a question reading to know exactly when to buzz in. He was also very careful to remain still and quick and not lose time by being over-animated or harsh when pressing the button.
Noobly Walker Yes, and if he was just a dude I was having a conversation with or who I overheard somewhere I wouldn't say anything. But he has a channel with 8 million+ subscribers and is using it to put up a video alleging a national game show was rigged. Huge accusations to a huge audience. You’d think he’d care enough to get the facts straight. The show has had six categories per round since 1964.

In an RNG based game. Where the undefeated God of the world still has a 0.00000000001% chance of losing to the weakest piece of garbage. Considering he still lost his most recent game.
I think the going quickly and using abbreviations was more about making sure the time clock didn't run out before all of the clues were revealed than it was about trying to overrun his opponents. he would also sometimes cut off Trebek when he was quipping about something in between the clues to make sure to get to the next one as fast as possible.

@@JasonT404 But Plinko is -- there's an article online saying they set it to always win once then then reset it to always lose. If they can do it with Plinko they can do anything on any show.
This does NOT explain how _Jeopardy!_ is rigged. To get a better understanding to see just how deep it goes, learn a little about gematria, go here...th-cam.com/video/0LaAIp4o9lg/w-d-xo.html and watch that video, following along by going to the 'gematrinator calculator' linked in the video's description box (check out the 'Tools' tab), and then read the comment section to find the connection to _Jeopardy!_ left there by yours truly.
Another important aspect you might have looked over when it comes to speed is that I think James wanted to be sure that every question was answered. Jeopardy has strict time limits and even if the contestants don't get through every question or category, they automatically move onto a commercial break, then Double Jeopardy. I've seen nearly entire categories go untouched because of this. Though, with James playing there's low likelihood that he's not going to know the answer and he's probably not concerned if there's a $200 question left. It could still be something he kept in mind.
Anyone else watching this episode post-2019 and tearing up when seeing the image of Alex Trebek against a tombstone😢? I watched Jeopardy with my mother when he was still around. Such a gentleman and a sweetheart. RIP Alex.
NBC doesn't own Jeopardy. I think it's a Sony production and CBS owns the rights to air it. But it might air on different networks depending on local affiliate deals.
Alex Trebek was probably the last person in the world to want James off of Jeopardy. I remember watching James’ run and I could tell by their interactions with each other that the both Trebek and James were having a blast. And considering that Trebek is suffering from pancreatic cancer, the fact that he was getting to witness such a formidable player again was probably very entertains for him.
Shawn Heatherly I’m inclined to think it’s just clickbait and he’ll actually talk about the infamous case of 20 questions, a 1950s game show that did rig its games and how rigging games now a days is pretty hard to pull off.
except according to the very vague rules, this still counts as kid's content. fast cuts, bright colors and animated characters are all in this video, and that makes it not in accord to coppa
@@Firdaus_28 There's a reason people think his smile is creepy though, it's because we subconsciously can recognize a fake smile. James smiles with more or less only the muscles around his mouth, but a genuine smile involves almost all of the muscles in the face, particularly movement around the cheeks and eyes, as well as usually hiding the bottom row of teeth. We don't really see these features with James's smile, and as such most people subconsciously recognize a problem with it, but not necessarily all of the specific reasons why.
@@thesonofdormammu5475 It just doesn't make sense for him to lose on purpose, especially since the way he played indicated that he was still trying to win even when he was behind at the end.
@Alex I felt the same way, like he wanted to just go home to be with his wife and daughter. People who think that his 'strategy' of maximizing winnings is unique, but it's not. He just knows more answers than all the others who have tried it.
Exactly. Annoyed by that part of the video which suggested that James "was one of the first players" to start at the bottom. It's called a "Forrest Bounce" and regular Jeopardy watchers have seen the strategy used for many years now.
I watched every game of his. When players stayed close and he missed a couple, he got tight. But then he would get on a roll and competitors started spectating.

Micheal Larson just figured out how to play the game most efficiently, kind of like what Holzhauer did on Jeopardy. There was no conspiracy or scandal there. @@Acerthorn "Dutifully" is overly generous. They eventually paid after trying to avoid it under the pretense that figuring it out was cheating.

@@Firdaus_28 Not creepy, but intimidating.

As for Press Your Luck, that wasn't really a scandal, per se. Micheal Larson just figured out how to play the game most efficiently, kind of like what Holzhauer did on Jeopardy. There was no conspiracy or scandal there.
Nor was there any scandal from the studio, either. The show never disqualified Larson, and dutifully paid his winnings that he was rightfully owed.

@@Merennulli *"They eventually paid after trying to avoid it under the pretense that figuring it out was cheating."*
Well, Larson's gameplay wasn't actually in the _spirit_ of the game, was it? The studio absolutely had the right to bring the fairness of his play under review. But they still ultimately came to the proper and correct conclusion.
I personally would much rather see a studio admit its own defeat and pay the winnings of its own accord after a careful review, rather than force the contestant to sue the studio for his winnings and spend more money in court than he actually won on the show.
