- Today I’m sharing how COVID-19 affected my life as a doctor. From working in the ER department, caring for critically ill patients in the ICU, getting sick with COVID myself, finally get vaccinated and now giving out vaccinations. It feels like a surreal experience.
A big part of the way I process emotions is by talking about them - so this video is more like a diary, and a way for me to create a narrative about the last 1.5 years. Hopefully it will give you some insight into my experience as a doctor during the pandemic.

I’m a paramedic and my entire house has volunteered at vaccine clinics over the last two months so I totally get what you mean when you said it’s a surreal and joyful moment. I had this one 17 year old female patient who came in to my station shaking and I asked what was wrong and she said straight to my face “nothing is wrong, I’m just so excited… this might be the best moment of the decade for me” and I burst out laughing, she joined in pretty quickly too and we talked for a bit while I gave her the injection and she headed out to the hall to wait her 15 minutes. Before she left she came back over to thank me for making her laugh for the first time in over a year. After being around so much death and pain where everyone’s faces and names start to blend together that one ray of joy was such an amazing thing to get to give someone.

Hey Siobhan! I actually met you once while working on the covid unit at the hospital many of your clips are from. Here is my experience. In July of 2020 my unit which was acute medicine was turned into the covid ward. Every single nurse on the unit was terrified hearing the news. Up until October/November only part of our unit was the covid unit. I remember crying multiple times before work because I was always put in there as an RPN. My anxiety was high. The second wave really took effect on the unit in November. Within the span of a week it went from being isolated in “room 4” the old step down unit to the ENTIRE unit being covid. it wasn’t uncommon for my entire patient assignment to be on 35-50% ventimask. I remember helping so many patients to the bathroom and upon ambulation their sats would drop into the 70s and it would take 10-15 minutes for it to go back up. We started also getting patients on optiflow due to the high demand in ICU. It was stressful at the time as we were the only covid unit throughout the region. The doctors were always on the phone saying “I’m sorry we can’t accept this patient right now there is no beds” Then at Christmas an outbreak started on the unit. On New Year’s Day it was announced. I was so terrified of getting the virus. I entered a draw for the vaccine and got my first shot Jan 3rd. During the outbreak over 20 staff got the virus, I thankfully did not. I was shocked because that Christmas weekend I was around so many coworkers who tested positive a few days later. I was under great stress during the second wave. I started not feeling well from the stress. Nauseous all the time, depressed and emotional. Our clinical manager started prepping us for the 3rd wave and updating us. I knew I couldn’t handle another wave. I left in March for a full time position on a different unit. Unfortunately as soon as I transferred our unit went into outbreak. At that time a coworker gave me a covid test on the unit and did it wrong and caused a massive nose bleed. I started refusing covid tests for a while after that. Thankfully the outbreak was over soon after that and my journey with covid was over for the time being. In total I did 8 months on the covid ward, had over 50 covid tests, got my vaccines and somehow got through THREE covid outbreaks without catching it. I remember all the RACE calls and being stuck in the room helping the patient in the N95, gown, faceshield and gloves. The N95 and gown were so hot. I would always feel tachy from feeling hot and uncomfortable. Taking off those gowns my skin was always soaked. A shower after getting home after work gave me the same feeling as having cake on my birthday 😂

So funny hearing your husband mention how his sense of smell came back with lavender soap - for me it was grinding coffee beans. A real wow moment - fortunately it was only 7 days of loss of smell and a dry cough. Had antibody test and it was positive. Think I was lucky to have such a mild case.
Considering that coffee is the most important food group ... I'm glad it had that curative effect on you! :-)

I’ve got another one for you, I was cleaning my cats litter box and I said “oh my gods that reeks” without even realizing it. When I realized what had happened I went running over to my boyfriend and I told him “The litter box reeks, I can smell it!” I never thought I would be so happy to be smelling feline excrement on a Monday morning.
I could smell but not taste anything for a month!
this video literally made me cryyy:( im going to write my medical entrance exam in september and its my dream to become a great doctor like u one day soo badly! when u were describing what u were going through, it was like painting a picture in my mind with me in that situation and immediately made me cry! and as soon as the clip came on of u being happy about getting the 2nd dose a huge smile popped on my face! we need more positive doctors like u in this world! ur my inspiration Dr.Siobhan! ilysm. stay safe and healthy and may god bless u and mark and ur whole family!

As a nursing student this really helped shed more light on what it’s been like when I wasn’t at the hospital during covid and I couldn’t help but get emotional as you described what you felt during it. Thank you for all that you do, I hope everyone decides to get vaccinated to keep one another safe.

The first minute is so well done I think that this deserves to be an actual feature film.
Where I live (and probably many other places), we have these year overviews at the end of the year. At the end of 2020, of course, covid was a huge part of the overview!
But it was done so perfectly! Capturing all the information we got on certain moments and how it evolved over time. It focussed on the bad, but also on the initiatives people took to help each other out! It was beautiful!
The beginning of this video reminded me of that!
As a former RN, I worry so much about all the Healthcare workers, including ancillary staff. I fear we are going to lose a lot of Healthcare workers because of PTSD and massive burnout.
You are all in my prayers daily.
Cheri, I am with you. 39yrs of US nursing through all the short staffing,new diseases... remember when HIV started and suddenly had to wear gloves? Hope they all learn EMDR in school for the PTSD as this won't be over for a long time.
The staffing shortage has reached a critical mass.
Its already happening unfortunately. In our hospital we have had new grads not even get through their orientation, and decide to quit nursing and go back to school. Nurses no showing shifts, highest level of stress related sick calls I've ever seen.
@@grapatin ...because nurses were let go. And the failure of admin. But, staffing shortage was shit way before covid. So that's nothing new.
Also, unvaccinated nurses who have natural immunity are replaced by FEMA medical peroneal that is unvaccinated....
@@midnull6009 Mostly, nurses haven't been let go. They've been leaving on their own accord due to burnout from the pandemic. Yes, the situation was bad before, but it is much worse now.
Also, FYI, "natural immunity," as in the immunity conferred from COVID infection lasts an average of 3 months, and can be less in some people, which is why unvaccinated people who get COVID have to wait 90 days after the resolution of symptoms before they can get vaccinated. Basically, natural immunity is unreliable and amounts to bupkus in terms of protecting the individual and the community around that individual from getting or spreading the virus.
I'm 27 and I live in Italy. Finally getting my first dose tomorrow!
It was very interesting and heartbreaking to hear your story. I constantly think about the trauma healthcare professionals went through due to covid and I hope you guys will get the mental health help you deserve to process it all.

I'm an occupational therapist that works in a retirement village in the USA. Though things are better than they were this time last year, every time I hear that one of the residents has gotten COVID I worry that we will backslide. However, I'm trying to stay optimistic and am doing my part to keep everyone safe!

As a chronic illness patient who has been to the operating room for life saving emergency surgery, 10 day hospital admission, and countless dr appts in office since the pandemic began, I feel you with the fear. I had first dose as high risk in April and also had my second dose in June here in NW ON. My fam is fully vaccinated. We are always in proper masks etc and doing as much curbside as possible. We are doing our part to make sure people like you aren’t overwhelmed….I wish everyone had that attitude. Thanks for all you are doing and congrats on being 5th year resident. Amazing accomplishment. I really enjoy your videos. I’m so glad I found your channel. I’m an RN in the US. I really noticed how kind and compassionate you are with excellent communication skills, demeanor and bedside manner. It’s clear you are an excellent physician. I too felt nervous at the beginning of the pandemic. I remember telling my family that I could very well contract the virus and die. I wasn’t especially scared, but more so just being realistic about what we knew at the time and feeling that I was a nurse and fulfilling my calling in life and knowing that might come with the ultimate sacrifice. I was actually working urgent care at the time. We weren’t especially busy because people were actually staying home unless it was urgent or they needed testing. We did have lots of people come in for testing and I remember rooming my first covid patient. He had flu sx and I was 99% sure he was positive. I followed our protocols and maintained 6ft from him except for when I took his temperature. A few days later we received the results that he was positive and my manager talked with me to make sure I had followed protocol. Everything was fine and I didn’t contract covid that time. (I later contracted covid working at an outpatient surgery center while in between vaccines). Luckily I was only mildly sick for one day and I attribute it to being partially vaccinated at the time of infection.
When you talked about the uncertainty in the beginning that really resonated with me. I remember all the protocol meetings, daily huddles, the ever changing information thrown at us. Even dealing with the public/patients was so difficult. People didn’t understand or didn’t want to follow the rules. Even though our clinic wasn’t busy in terms of numbers, it was such a challenging and emotional time period.
I salute all the ED/ICU and Covid unit staff. I know they were some of the real front line heroes.
....it's really weird to think about how wild it is in some countries. I'm a medical student in Australia, and I was fully vaccinated by May, and things are...pretty calm in my state? It's just so heartbreaking to see how much things vary not just country wide, but worldwide with this pandemic. Stay strong!

Unfortunately, our public health response has been politicized. Anti-maskers, anti-vaxxers, false info spread by idiots on social media and Fox News (beloved by the former guy) and politicians, it’s a mess! Now, the majority of new cases is Delta variant in unvaccinated people.
I got my second dose in March and that doesn’t mean I’m lowering my guard. I understand the science.

Australia is seeing a surge. You guys are not out of the woods yet and vaccinate rate is very low there compared to other countries that are seeing a new wave.
@@ChaiLatte13 it’s not really a “surge” compared to the rest of the world. We have the harshest lock down rules compared to everywhere (for good or bad). Hopefully the state of nsw gets on top of their outbreak

Violin energy is unmatched
As a nurse I remember the anxiety and uncertainty in the first weeks of the pandemic. It was really hard. Then trying to manage my home life with 2 young special needs kids in zoom school with their own heightened emotions... it was so overwhelming.

You were going to have to wait until July for your second dose? Doctors should be the very top priority to receive available vaccines.
In Italy Healthcare Personnel has been vaccinated first, for Pfizer the first and second doses were 28 days apart as prescribed by Pfizer…
It depends on the province and vaccine availability. Because in canada it was determined that extra time could be taken between each vaccine, it was determined that vaccinating more people with their first dose was more important.
@@The_other_jenny UK did the same, but all medical staff were at the front of the queue to keep the NHS running
In Canada we our hot spots and largest death rates were senior’s homes and those homes and the workers were the priority. The second problem was we could not get vaccines - the companies making them kept cancelling our shipments so our focus was getting as many people as we could with a first dose. Once we finally started getting shipments of the vaccine we are finally getting our people their second dose. The good news was in the 3rd wave I did not hear of one outbreak in a nursing home! I was scheduled for my second dose in early September but because we finally started getting vaccines I got my second dose in early July!
In Portugal, all medical professionals were vaccinated first, then the elderly or really sick patients at the same time as all the schools personnel. And then, step by step from the older population to the youngest.
Being a healthcare worker has been challenging this past year and a half but, you have been such a positive and informative person to watch throughout! Thank you! ❤️

We have 3 doctors in our family and seeing what they went through was exhausting on

Thank you for sharing the ups and downs and the emotions. I feel as though the Delta variant is going to wreak havoc in the US, with so much resistance to getting vaccinated. I got my second shot in late April; there were barely any people at the vaccine clinic, and all the pharmacies had switched to walk-ins with no appointment because we had so much supply with not enough demand. It's an absolute travesty that any frontline workers anywhere couldn't get vaccinated, and yet we had excess doses.
This video captured so many feelings and emotions! Looking back on the uncertainties daily especially in ER was so tough. Designated hot zones in ER was so scary and the phone covered in plastic,goggles that fogged up, and I work in EVS ! I admire the nursing staff and doctors for their dedication during a scary time.
We have come a long way but still need to be cautious, but having both vaccinations now makes me feel safer!

I'm actually so happy for you that you get to come full circle and almost have something of a small stress and bad-energy vacation at the vaccination clinic after one and a half year of sacrificing your life to this illness. Making people happy, working in such a positive-energy environment with so many people (who are conscious and not dying) coming in (and hopefully saying thank you to you) must feel really really good, and you deserve it so much. To the people working in the medical field, do y'all ever feel anxious and get a feeling like you have a disease when you are studying about diseases and their symptoms? If yes, how do you deal with it?
Oh ya I definitely did. But I just kind of tell myself I can’t have *all* the illnesses and move on. At least I’ll know what symptoms to look out for.
I didn't think I had the disease but imagined how it might feel to figure out how to help them through. Pathology happens to the tissue, illness happens to the person. At 58 developed a rare neuromuscular disease and found neurologists don't have this view

Imagine watching people reflect on the pandemic while your country is still in the midst of it and still denying its impact.
❤️ Some are thinking of it daily. Today I was able to go to a book store and last week to two different fast food places indoors. And I was inside my being, holding onto every glorious moment. Because not only do I realize how lucky I am to be vaccinated, I know the virus is mutating and that our freedom from a lockdown again is not a sure thing. Thinking of you and sending you a virtual hug.

I’m so sorry to hear that you and your hubby went through such a horrible ordeal but happy to hear that you both overcame it with a positive attitude . I took the vaccine in March and April (Moderna) as I have a chronic incurable intestinal disease and a weak immune system. Again thank you guys for everything you do !!! Thank you, Siobhan & Matt, from the bottom of my heart. Thank you for all that you've gone through and sacrificed to keep us all safe. I am fortunate to be fully vaccinated and to have been healthy these last 18 months, despite having an "essential" type job and continuing to go to work through all of this. You are contributing to that, and I wish everyone could show that by getting vaccinated too.
Here in hawaii we just starting our wave of the variant and it’s getting worse….and our vaccines arrived last year! Edited: I think this dairy is part 1.

This is probably a weird question, but do you feel a bit of relief working with covid patients knowing you've already had it? or is it still just as stressful/scary?
