  • Join me for a day in the life of a doctor! I'm a 3rd year internal medicine resident on a respirology rotation (specialty of the lungs). You will get to meet the whole medical team and see how we work together throughout the day. We will be seeing new patients in the emergency department, following up with patients on the ward and doing a procedure to drain fluid from the pleural space, called a thoracentesis.
    Trying to quit smoking? Check this out!

    • @Zeewman
      @Zeewman 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yo, what?! Of any reason I've heard, that is the dumbest. Smoking at 15 to die quickly? Who ever invented that? xD La Reina, if you ever meet that ex-friend again, tell her to stop being silly. And to quit smoking, as it's just a waste of time in general. I don't know how much a pack of smokes costs in Lebanon, but if she smokes two a day, she can give that money to poor people who really need it or she can just send it to me. Oh, and Shelby Zealand, tell her to make quitting smoking her "thing".

      As long as she respects non-smokers around her, I don't know what the problem is. Of course, it's likely that she will become ill at some point and impose herself on the medical fraternity, and will become more and more ill if she continues to smoke and likely die as a result. But its a metaphysical thing, isn't it? It's your life for what you want to do with it, and as long you don't abuse the love and goodwill of others, then go ahead.

    I wish healthcare professionals would remember that not all COPD is self inflicted. My Mother was given a COPD diagnosis after her lungs were damaged by infection yet was openly told that her treatment is inferior to that given to someone with something like asthma by the specialist nurse. She’s never smoked yet repeatedly gets asked if she’s quit. It’s so frustrating. Thanks for the video, I hope preparations for your exam are going well

    • @s_rofbear
      @s_rofbear 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yes!! I was hoping this would be mentioned. It’s kind of like diabetes - people hear that word and they think “self inflicted”.

      Mark Weatherall I was just about to mention A-1! When I saw this episode (only half way through it now), I was wondering if A-1 will be mentioned. I don’t drink and never smoked, and always got told off by medical staff...

    • @blackwidow8412
      @blackwidow8412 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      The reason alpha-1-antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency isn't mentioned is because it is the cause in only 1% of people with COPD. It's a genetic condition that's rare. The AAT protein is low thereby not protecting the patient's lungs. The majority of people with COPD are smokers and it's why medical professionals do tend to harp on eliminating smoking.
      I'm sorry some of your family members were treated poorly. Although the above is true, it's no excuse. Doctor's need to read someone's full history rather than making assumptions based off of the majority cause.

    • @miranda725

You can try to talk to her and share your concerns about it, and ask if she’s willing to think about it for a few days. If she wants to quit, there are lots of different help she can get, but it will only work if she genuinely wants it for herself :-)

    I appreciate the respiratory doctors because they do so much to help patients breathe and feel better. As an asthma sufferer who takes a controller med and has a rescue inhaler, I can't help but be appreciative for the pulmonary docs who not only diagnosed me but helped me in my journey to breathe easier. Thank you for covering that rotation. Have a great day Sioban! ☺️😊

My doctor ran all these tests and concluded I had an unknown respiratory virus with an infection. yes it came with 104 fever, sore throat, fatigue etc... I got better then 2 weeks later the coughing started. I went through 4 inhalers and looked blue a lot. Not fun

    My husband has COPD and he can't blow into one of those - it wont register. He keeps telling me he is going to die before next month but who knows. His oxygen is 95 sitting up but if he walks about 10 feet it will be around 68 or lower. Who knows. He is skin and bones at 120 pounds. They told him 2 years ago he had about 2 years so maybe he is right. Just so hard watching this and I am his caretaker.

  • @MissBliss73

    As someone who as researched COPD data worldwide, after being diagnosed with it. I have to argue that the #1 cause of COPD is air pollution. And in America, we focus too much on smoking like it is the 1 and only cause. Which tends to sway the perception of our medical professionals. We have patients in their 20's being diagnosed across the world. Most other countries readily blame air pollution is the major cause. Why don't we? Because we would have to shut down much of the industry sector and Americans would lose too many jobs that could not be replaced by eco-friendly companies that care about our environment.

    So my grandparents smoked for many years, maybe 40 to 50 years? They got medicine from the doctor to stop smoking. Unfortunately at that point my grandma had already had breast cancer and after stopping my grandpa had lung cancer diagnose. Grandma got cured, but my grandpa's lung cancer had spreaded and he died 6 months after getting the diagnose. He had had pain in the left arm/side/back and his breathing/coughing was bad. I guess he didn't wanna go to doctor and when he went, it was already late......
    I don't wish lung cancer on anyone and ever since then, I've been even more negative about smoking. Like I actually get angry if people smoke close to me. I've always hated the smell of cigarettes, it gives me head ache and sometimes even migraine. Honestly, smoking isn't just your own decision. It affects people near you, the smoke, the illnesses and the cancer especially. If you have to smoke, smoke very far away from other people and animals.

    I started smoking in 1966...when i was 6 years old. Even my doctor smoked, it was the thing to do at that time. I never realized I was causing my lungs damage. I finally quit using a combination of nicotine vape and a nicotine patch. Once I realized the nicotine vape was taking care of the oral fixation and the patch taking care of the nicotine staying at the constant I lost my craving to smoke. I have been smoke free now for 6 years. I smoked for 52 years, it was my thing to do..some people got into alcohol, some for into drugs, i got into cigarettes. I have severe lung damage. Today hardly anyone smoke cigarettes. I wish the tobacco companies would be penalized. In the 1960's there were cigarettes machines in every store and 2 quarters bought a pack. easy to get! Not today
