I worked for a city transit bus company for 30 years and am familiar with this style of old GMC buses since we still had a few similar to this when I started working there in 1973 although ours were later 1950's 4512 and 5103 models. They had 6-71 Detroit engines and a v-drive tranny. Yep you can remove the complete engine cradle. Unhook the 2 rear hangers at the top and 2 motor mounts at the bottom of the firewall. Of course you have to unhook the driveshaft and coolant lines running to the heater, fuel lines, wiring, etc but I know you already know that. Did that quite a few times in my early years working there for engine replace or rebuild. Much easier to rebuild one out of the bus than in it. And yes I am old. LOL

Being somewhat of a bus nut since the late seventies, I can probably furnish a bit of info on this one. As it is is a TGH 3102 series, this means it was a gas powered unit from the factory, and is a transit bus. Were it a diesel, it would be a TDH. Transit and suburban service buses from the period before the PD3751 aren't in demand, largely because they have no baggage bays under the floor. The H indicates Hydromatic transmission. This one is likely from the late forties or early fifties..
Although the following of buses has changed very much in the last 40 years, people determined to convert them to RVs always gravitate to diesels, and most also look at continued parts availability. Since GM has not built highway coaches since the eighties, body parts are problematic, but can be found as a rule. Probably the best use for this would be to salvage the sheet metal for future use, pull the engine and transmission, and scrap the rest. By the way, GM coaches with transverse engines would have the transmission on the curb side, and the engine ran counter clockwise. The one you have would have standard rotation, probably because that was how the engines were available in gas powered.

He'd been associated with a touring band years earlier and their bus ended up sitting on his property. I don't think it was still roadworthy, but apparently he enjoyed sitting in it sometimes, maybe reliving the good old days. Somehow it caught fire while he was in it and he did not make it out before being overcome.

If it was still in California I would definitely scoop this bus up. Seems like most of the cool stuff is back east and down south. I’m in Oregon.

OK, my BIL is retired bus mechanic. He started in the 60's working on "Silver Sides" which this is one of. The power ranged depending on if municipal transport in hill country (say San Francisco) vs flat land. 2-71 was sort of minimum average spec. But Silver Side GM Coaches are worth something because they were so well built. Advertise it on FB Marketplace and someone will pay you and come get it :-)

Bus Grease Monkey commented to one of the posts on his channel about this bus that the G in the model number means it was gas powered.

Sad looking old girl ya got there. Poor thing.
Love the design of the front. Very cool if she could stick around a little longer.
I bet just pressure washing would do wonders in the opinion of her category lol.

Now, I know you have a lot on your plate, but this beast ought to run & drive at least one more time. Bus Grease Monkey is more into Detroit powered buses but if you can get a hold of him he might at least know someone interested in saving it or helping with you saving it, if not interested himself.

I've never seen a drive line set up like that. I guess all pushers are configured that way, even on modern buses. Interesting👍

I wish we lived closer I’d pick up that bus. There was an old show called the Honeymooners and that’s a smaller version of Jackie Gleason’s bus. It would be fun to do a replica of the mooners bus.

Ha...I think there's a chance that a brick is more aerodynamic.....with the v6 it had to get like 2 miles to the gallon lol. I knew an old man, dead and gone now, bought a 1962 1 ton gmc flatbed dually with the v6 brand new. He thought it was around 5 miles to the gallon. Back in 1962 it cost too much to run he said. Said he sold it a year later.. so it sounds like you may be able to find a home for it given what you came up with on #s of known buses out there. Thanks for sharing
