    There is an old saying “ Inch by inch it’s a cinch”. Who ever said that never pulled anything out of the woods this old or this big. You’ve worked harder on this rescue than the old steam engine..... and that project wasn’t easy either. This has been an excellent video series, all hard work, with no drama but a hell of a lot of grit and determination. My hat is off to you Jonathan....👍👍👍

    looks like you are stuck in swing and travel at the same time. this was a common problem on these and you need to pull the cover between the two drums to check the sliding jaw clutches for the vertical travel and swing shafts. there should be 1/4 inch of clearance when disengaged between the jaws.

    • @jonathanw4942

    I have ran many cable cranes in a scrap yard over the years so hear are some tips, Cable cranes can't walk and swing at the same time, the same drum and clutch that swings it also makes it walk, with the same lever, When you switch from swing to walk ease back and forth on the lever with one hand and work the swing \ walk handle with your other hand at the same time because there's a fork that you can't see that slides a gear up and down from walk into swing and moving the lever back a forth helps the teeth line up together, Also if you look at drum there is a adjustment that moves the shoes in closer to the drum, you can ease it in to gear a little until you see the adjuster inside the drum.Break the lock nut loose on one side and tighten the other nut in about a half a turn a little goes a long way ! But first i would shoot some baby powder inside the drum it helps the shoes bite and cleans the rust off the inside of the drum If you have any questions feel free to ask and have fun !,

    You know. The ability to say "I don't know" is key to moving forward. It is when "experts" insist they "know" that is the greatest impediment to figuring out the right direction to take. Every time I hear Jonathan say "I don't know" immediately that allows a reset and he comes up with a new plan.

    YEAH THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT! I feel like a little kid again, cheering on your videos. When I was a young buck (in my 20's) I worked for a Buick dealership that had a 1950's firetruck that they used in parades for advertising. Whichever mechanics got to the shop early, had the task of moving cars out of the shop and parking them outside. 1 morning the service manager tossed me the keys to the fire truck and told me to park it outside in the parking lot. Well me being so young and still a kid at heart, I took that thing for a ride around the block. I guess we are all still kids at heart. And I think that is why so many of us are enjoying this video series. We all played with toys like this when we were kids. And wished we could drive them in person. Looking forward to tomorrow's video

Watching these videos brings back great memories when occasionally he let me go with him for a day. I'd sit behind him on a toolbox while he loaded the redwood logs in the trucks. This brings back memories for me. 25 years ago I bought a Koehring 503, it was in a parking lot tho not in the woods. Sat a long time, so similar arthritis issues. The Budda engine was gone, 350 Chevy in it's place, running on 5 or 6 cylinders. Eventually, after slathering the under carriage with used motor oil and several pounds of grease in the fittings, it did move. Similar to this one at first. But it got better with eventual adjustments to clutches, and replacement of a few worn parts. If it would sit 6 months of no use, arthritis would set in yet again, and the oil slather'in and greasing ritual would need repeating. Most times, someone would have to lay under it while moving, and bar the dog clutches in or out to make it turn. Fun times. It's long gone now. If you see a fire hydrant, and it says Kennedy Valve on it....there just might be some of an old Koehring 503 in those hydrant castings.

      That's kinda what I was thinking. They need to use a 2 gal Weed sprayer to soak a large percentage of the whole machine. Of course, who am I to say, just the act of getting it running is a miracle.

    Good to see it moving. In the beginning of this series I would’ve bet that machine was to far gone. But it’s got johnathan. You never give up on anything that I’ve seen.

    Great program!🤗 Learning much about these old cranes. Well built stuff. These old cranes required many skills to use them. Was it correct how few guys could operate them in the day? Saw somewhere? Not sure if these types of cranes were used with steel wrecking balls when demolishing old concrete buildings? Highly skilled operators. Crane is small and unique. Cool! Thank you/guys for all the work.

    That creaking it made when it first backed up is familiar, I hear it every morning when I get up. The old Detroit seems to run better and better since it was awaken and run through some heat cycles.

      I believe the main reason Jonathon is being reluctant on drenching them cleat pivots, has to do with sand in the mud of that region; get them pivots too greasy/oily and they’ll just attract MORE crap. Get even more gummed up then already is. His logic is sound; just gotta get the beast in motion and allow the fight between WEIGHT and gravity to their work of friction braking of rust/roots & crap

    • @johnlemmey7698
      @johnlemmey7698 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes i would use waste engine oil all over the tracks the gears under the house. anywhere things move. i would call it dust or rust control for the EPA nice people. Used motor oil washes off easily. no problem with dirt build up. And the oil is going back in the ground from whence it came.

    Got the feeling we are all but home on the next video, Congrats! I did cringe seeing the trees grow through the track. Aa a journeyman tool and die maker I had a chance to spend an afternoon in a M-41 tank on Camp Pickett, Virginia training course in the gunner seat. Visiting an outdoor classroom the demonstration never occured in our foreground. The study subject M-48 never appeared into view due to a sappling stripping the track off! Lesson learned: A broomstick diameter scrub can disable a tank when traversing the length on a hillside.
