Pure clickbait John 😃I can't resist a juicy rant as you well know. And a rant about prices too. This is definitely my cup of tea. Even before we get on to the main rant I'm ranting. Laproaig 😠🤬 Whisky Lock and I have pointed out a number of times why this distillery frustrates us so much. It's an entirely Love/Hate situation. The 10 year at 40% over here. WTF is that all about? It's an insult. Furthermore, I have never tasted any Cairdeas ever. Unless your willing to fork out 100 smackeroos it can't be had. and it's not always easy to find. The 10 cask strength is the only bottle I'll buy now and let's not get excited about the price. No 10 year old whisky, even bottled at cask strength, should cost anywhere near £100. It's a £65 bottle. Over the years the independently bottled Laphroaig has been blowing away the distillery bottles. If they bottled the standard 10 at 46%, as they obviously should, they would have an instant winner.
That kind of leads into the rant. Overpricing - My God. Whisky and (now) rum prices are obscene. I've been moaning about the decline of quality and the increase in prices for years. When a whisky powerhouse like Glenlivet - hardly short of a penny or two - scrapped the 12 to be replaced by that abomination of a NAS the writing was on the wall. "It's what's in the bottle that matters" we were all told. Anyone else notice how Ardbeg's core NAS range is rubbish compared to what it used to be and we hardly talk about it any more? Crummy, overused, casks are the rage these days, hence the increased use of STR casks and all manner of stupid finishes to salvage something and then market it as intelligent blending. You shouldn't hesitate to call it out John. Ardbeg have been taking the piss by insulting and exploiting their loyal fan base for years. Even that bottle that you think is better value costs more than the 10. Why? It's just another rip-off. Ardbeg's parent company, LVMH, are marketing all their vast range of companies as premium and aspirational. Glenmorangie are in the same boat too. It's not like these companies are hanging on by the skin of their teeth: They are making a killing at our idiotic expense.
It's bad enough that the stuff isn't very good but i's not even mediocre and cheap. There's so much overpriced mediocrity on the market. Unfortunately, the greed of the whisky owners, has been fuelled by the fact that so many people continue to keep buying when they should boycott. I'm never going to buy a bottle of Talisker 18 again; Or Glendronach 18, Lagavulin 12, Oban 14, anything by Balblair and Old Pulteny, anything by Balvenie, anything by Bowmore, anything by Ardbeg that costs more than the 10 year, anything by Mortlach, and the list just goes on and on. We are being ripped-off and insulted on a massive scale and the only way to stop it is by refusing to buy it until they bring their prices down.
The quality of independent bottles of whisky has crashed and the price soared. Dozens of new distilleries opened to join in the gold rush and justifying the ridiculous prices of their four year old whisky - "It's what's in the bottle" we hear as we become more and more accustomed to drinking average whisky for top dollar prices.
Agreed about Foursquare too. Years ago, Ralfy and I agreed that good as it is it's a generic Barbados flavour profile. None of the fancy bottles have ever been better than the 12 ex-bourbon, in my opinion. The best options are shop only exclusives. None of them are worth more than £75 a bottle. Decent bourbon stopped being a working man's drink some years ago. I'm talking decent bourbon which cost under 20 dollars. It's even more outrageous when you consider the history of rum that it has become a luxury product for the rich. I hate that. There's still good whisky out there but you have to hunt around for good prices.
Yours was a very polite rant and I apologise for my mega-rant. You're quite right though. Stop buying it and dip in to the gigantic stash. I'm fed up and I'm going back to wine. I love whisky but I refuse to be exploited and treated like a jerk by these companies. WT

Ok Welsh… let me settle into my recliner with a dram while I ponder….Cairdeas @ $90 in my area and last years White Port/Madeira was one of my favs…yes we are lucky to have Laphroaig 10 & Glenmo 10 @ 43%
Agree the best core Ardbegs for me were 2017/18
Bizarre bbq compared to all their other special releases is a relative bargain 😳 still puzzled as to why🧐
Surprised by your disdain for Balblair … I find the 12 yr good value and enjoyable…
Old Pultney 18 is a nice bottle but I bought it at 2019 priced…
Agree about boycotting Oban, Glendronach and I never connected with Balvenie anyway. And Bowmore core range is a joke.
Indies are shooting up in price as well but there are some hidden gems out there…
Let me get another dram now so I can respond to your part two😅😇
As always Welch, appreciate your passionate comments.

The last Lagavulin Offerman edition was £70 here in the UK. The latest edition is £90. That's a huge price increase, and I refuse to pay it. There has to be a limit.

Don't get mad at the distillers, everything is going up due to supply lines that were severely disrupted during Covid while the worth of your dollar/quid keeps dropping. Or let's just say, what hasn't gone up?

    • @justwhisky
      @justwhisky  หลายเดือนก่อน

Point well taken… what triggers me is the inequities with certain distilleries like Ardbeg where their core 10 yr is $60, Bizarre bbq NAS 50.9% @ $85 and many NAS @ 46% @ $140 and up… defies logic !!! But the kool-aid drinkers soak anything and everything thrown at them no matter the cost.
And then there is Macallan and Diageo and others following suit…with smoke and mirrors.
I understand inflation but not extortion.
      Cheers 🥃

I think it's pretty evident that Ardbeg makes a lot of profit on their special releases...with that being said I still love the Ardbeg10 ,the Uigeadail and the Corryvreckan, So if that helps them keep the prices on the core range stable then so be it... I just don't buy into the hype, because the core is good enough for me.

Prices are out of control. I went all in the last 2 years buying anything and everything at any price, but now I think I have only bought a hand full bottles in 2024 because I realized prices are not slowing down as far as increases go and most are not worth the asking price. Time to slow down and be selective and not indulgent.
