In 1984 I was seventeen. Randy Rhoads died a couple years earlier tragically. Eddie van Halen, Randy Rhoads and George Lynch are the reasons I started playing the guitar. I was one year into learning when this came out. Watched them live like ten times. Love them. Thx for reacting.
Dokken was my jam in the 80’s. Alone again and In My Dreams are solid. I LOVED George Lynch as a small town, country girl. I would save my money to buy Metal Edge magazine just to put his picture in my walls.
they have many good songs..."Without Warning",..."In my dreams", "Unchain the night", "hunter", "Heaven sent". "Dream Warriors", "lightning strikes again", "you just got lucky", Breaking the chains", "Mr Scary","It's not love"..
I saw Dokken on this tour "Tooth, and Nail" open for Ronnie James Dio back in Nov. of 84. What an awesome concert that was!! Dokken are one of my all time favorite Rock/Metal Bands. I've seen them many times in concert since back in the day. Thanks for this Great reaction Vid!
Second on this one! First Dokken track I recall ever hearing - on GTA: Vice City Stories of all places - really shows off the vocal cleanliness and atmosphere of their composition style.
An instrumental show-off song for Lynch would be Dokken's "My. Scary". A good song you might like from Lynch Mob (George Lynch's own band) is "Wicked Sensation".
Notice that Lynch guest played on Maximum Security with Tony MacAlpine and then wrote Mr Scary for the next Dokken album? Very much influenced by Tony Mac.
Ryan & George , Gene Simmons of KISS went to a club in L.A. to see a band called The Boyz which had Lynch on guitar. The opening band was Van Halen. After Simmons saw Van Halen he left the club and never saw Lynch's band. Simmons helped VH put together their demo tape which got them on the road to stardom. IMO Lynch always had a chip on his shoulder after that incident and to show people he was a capable guitarist would sometimes go overboard to prove to people he had the chops. To his credit he does have a recognizable style that set him apart from most of the L.A. based EVH wannabes. I think you guys would like his band he formed after Dokken called Lynch Mob a lot more. It's bluesier & grooves hard and his solo playing is fantastic. Check out Lynch Mob album Wicked Sensation. That whole album rocks.
Fun fact on George Lynch. He's great friends with Warren De Martini from Ratt and Jake E Lee from Ozzy/Badlands. George left Dokken after Breaking the chains to tour with Ozzy and was told he was getting the gig for Ozzy. This was to happen when Brad Gillis was going to leave to do Night Ranger full time. Backing up, George taught guitar and Randy Rhodes school and one of his students was Warren. Later, Warren got much better obviously, he helped George work out the parts and learn all of Randy Rhodes parts to join Ozzy. At that time, Warren actually joined Dokken after George left. Meanwhile, the band "Mickey Ratt" had Jake E. Lee playing guitar for them. Well, George at the time had cut his hair and died it half black and white and Ozzy and Sharon didn't like his look. They were really into "the look" for a guitarist. Ozzy had more auditions, Jake came to one and Ozzy gave the gig to Jake over George and Jake believes it was over looks because he says his audition was not his very best because he was nervous because it was Ozzy. So he joins Ozzy and calls Jake about the gig in "Mickey Ratt" and he joins what became Ratt. George went back to Dokken. The rest is history. Also, Don Dokken, he is plugged in to everyone in Hollywood. Don knows everyone and has produced several bands and done behind the scenes backing vocals and production for so many bands, ex, XYZ, Scorpions, etc. What a time the LA sunset strip was back in the 80-90's...
Maannnn George lynch is sooooo underrated for that Era. He is definitely GOATED. He was supposed to be Ozzy Osbournes guitar player after Randy Rhodes died but some management politics didn't make it happen. But yea dokken has some great songs! They're just cool man.
Warren Demartini showed Lynch how to play the Randy Rhodes licks. Lynch could not get them down. There is an interview withGeorge Lynch video on TH-cam where he tells the story
What a lot of people don't realize is that when this song came out they were an opening act, not seasoned headliners. I saw them open for Triumph on March 1st, 1985 in San Diego. They had so few songs in their catalog that they played this song twice. They were phenomenal live back then.
Of all the 80 guitar shredders, Lynch had his own signature phrasing & licks. Mostly pentatonic, but his style is so obvious when you hear a solo. And his rhythm playing has always been underrated.
Man, I transported back in time just now back to 1984 hearing this for the first time,I just started playing guitar and that solo/song was just amazing, When it was just magic coming out of the speakers, “George Lynch is a fantastic player.
Glad you guys did this one and enjoyed it. 80’s hair metal is always hit or miss if you didn’t grow up with it so it’s nice to see when people hearing it for the first time appreciate the music.
Happened to have met Don Dokken some years back after a concert, literally ran in to the guy back stage after their set and he was so cool and gracious, we talked for a good ten minutes, one of the nicest, most down to Earth rock musicians I've met.
I bought this album when I was 13 years old in 1984. You need to check out you just got lucky. I believe that was their first hit off of this album. Dakin was popular but they weren't like a super group or anything. But yeah I did like them growing up.
George Lynch is awesome guitarist. You guys are the 1st reactors I have ever watched. Thank you for the rabbit hole. I am now a huge Kpop fan because of reactors.
Nice to see some Dokken getting some love. One of the most overlooked bands of that era. Where you didn't like the guitar solo, that's the reason I like Dokken so much; great guitar with that pretty unique voice.
Yeah, not sure why In My Dreams was not at the top of the list. Is what I said before I started watching the video. So glad they liked this song. Lynch's guitar tone is unparalleled.
Glad you are still enjoying Dokken. Breaking the Chains, The Hunter, It's Not Love are some of the next ones to check out. If you ever venture into power ballads, go for Alone Again.
The solo was perfect! You have to understand that 80’s were the shred era and it is now again! Guitar solos were the thing of the 80’s Metal scene and George Lynch was one of the top guys up there shredding with the best of them
And once again you guys prove why you’re the best reaction channel. I get goosebumps from the song which I haven’t heard in years and watching your expressions is awesome.
Guys I've Said it a couple times before, if you want solos that you'll want to go back and listen to I suggest you check out White Lion and Vito Bratta. ALL of his Solos are incredibly well written and fit the movement of the song. Technicality fused with synergy and I swear you won't regret it. My suggestion is start with Wait or Radar Love.
Unchain the Night is one of my favorites from Dokken. I feel one thing you might be missing about George Lynch (or other guitarist) shredding on the guitar back in the day is that the head bangers in the 80's wanted to see and hear what they could do!
The thing that gets me about Dokken is that Don had SUCH a great, timeless voice that I would have liked to have seen them transform into a more serious band in the 90s and 2000's but with Don's voice intact and George still in the band.
I’m so happy you guys covered this song. Dokken is one of my favorite guilty pleasures. You put one a Dokken song at a gathering and I guarantee that a significant number of people will start singing along to the chorus. My wife and I actually met while picking out Dokken songs on a jukebox at a club. 13 years later and still going strong. I want to see your guys reaction to It’s not Love. About 35 seconds into the song you’re going to hear one of sickest, nastiest riffs in a hair metal song and George Lynch will win you over.
The thing people dont understand about the guitar players of the 80s was that it was a competition to be the top player. EVH, Randy Rhoads, George Lynch, Warren DeMartini, etc. They would close out the album with some shredding on top of smoking solos. Can't recall but there was a solo of the year award and Lynch won for In My Dreams. Plus, he and Don Dokken hated each other guts so Don would sing louder and George would shred even harder. My favorite band from that area in a tie with Ratt. You guys are dead on with Ratt! The song from that Nightmare on Elm Street was called Dream Warriors. Thanks for making reviews on my genre of music!
Dokken was my absolute favorite band through high school and college. George Lynch is an absolute legend. I saw him with Lynch Mob a few years ago. He’s in his 60s now and can still shred like a young man.
Just saw Lynch & Dokken last night. Sad thing was I think they ran out of time & Lynch only got 3 songs with the band. He’s been my guitar hero for over 30 years.
So glad you guys have liked Dokken, one of my all time favorites. Also glad you avoided Alone Again, which was probably their biggest commercial hit, but is also a slow power ballad that I feel would be a land mine on this channel. I think "In My Dreams" is probably George's best solo. I would recommend "Tooth and Nail," "Lightning Strikes Again," "Dream Warriors," and off of their reunion album "Too High too Fly," which is an absolute epic about drug addiction that has a super bluesy sound.
This song is great but you GOT to do the song Tooth And Nail, has probably one of George Lynch's best solos, Lightning Strikes Again, the instrumental Mr Scary & Sleepless Nights, you'll dig those ones 👍
A great solo became an expected on songs back in the 80s. RATT was my favorite back in the day. I bought every album right when they came out. RATT just had so many hits.
The this about George Lynch on guitar is, he was so good that they had to let him go off. Even if he tried to be subtle, it sounded like showing off. He just had it, like Eddie Van Halen, Dimebag, Randy Rhodes, John Petrucci, Yngwie, etc. He wasn't as universally recognized because of the stigma attached to the scene he came from. But listening to those old albums, and looking at concert footage, it was clear that he belonged in the same breath as the other greats. Also yeah, it was a totally normal and standard thing back then to have extended sections for guitar solos. People loved to hear the shredders. It's not as much of a novelty these days but there are still those carrying the torch.
Dokken scored 3 platinum records in the 80's that defined the hard rock genre... 'Tooth and nail' (1984)... 'Under lock & key' (1985)... and 'Back for the attack' (1987)... Their 1988 live album 'Beast from the East' is considered 1 of the greatest live records of hard rock. The classic line-up of Don Dokken (vocals), George Lynch (guitar), Jeff Pilson (bass) and Mick Brown (drums) ... is iconic 🤘🤘but they couldn't keep it together because of Don and George's conflicts and the band split up in 1989. Don Dokken released a stellar solo album 'Up from the ashes' in 1990 w/ an all-star line up of Peter Baltes (bassist of Accept), John Norum (guitarist of Europe), Mikkey Dee (drummer of King Diamond, Motorhead, Scorpions) and Billy White (guitarist of Watchtower)... but it was not a major success. Dokken reunited in 1994 and released 'Dysfunctional' in 1995, which was a departure from 80's rock... it sold gold in the US. An acoustic set from 1994 was released in 1996 as 'One live night'... However, guitarist George Lynch's obsession w/ 90's grunge rock led to the creation of the 1997 album 'Shadow life'... which was a commercial failure and led to Lynch being fired in 1998. Winger guitarist Reb Beach joined for Dokken's 1999 album 'Erase the slate' which marked a return to hard rock... and the 2000 live album 'Live from the Sun'... However, both Beach & bassist Jeff Pilson were out of Dokken by 2001... Europe's guitarist John Norum recorded 1 Dokken album 'Long way home' (2002) before leaving to reunite w/ Europe in 2004. John Levin (guitar) joined Dokken in 2004 for the album 'Hell to pay' and has remained in the band til today... Their 2008 album 'Lightning strikes again' was the last to feature drummer Mick Brown, who seems to have retired due to health issues... Dokken released 'Broken bones' in 2012, and are gearing to release their latest album 'Heaven comes down' in 2023 w/ no original members in Dokken. Most people recommend the classic 80's songs by Dokken, but they have released some underrated songs since reforming in 1994... Some forgotten bangers by Dokken - 'Change the world' ... 'Too high to fly' ... 'The Maze' ... 'Puppet on a string'... "Don't bring me down"...🤘🤘🔥🔥
I remember when Dokken was the opening act of literally every concert I ever went to... It was never a bad time. Lynch was incredibly talented and made it enjoyable. Glad you made the line in the Dream Warriors!
I didn’t know that Into the Fire was featured in Nightmare on Elm Street 3. In case you guys don’t know, the Dokken song Dream Warriors was also featured in Nightmare on Elm Street 3. I’m pretty sure it was written for the movie since part of the movie’s title is “Dream Warriors” but it also appears on the Dokken album Back For the Attack. There is even a music video for the song which features Freddy Kruger and scenes from the movie. So I knew the song Dream Warriors was in the movie but I didn’t know, or remember, that Into the Fire was in the movie too.
If I was to list some of the Dokken recommendations and then cut it in half, and then cut in half again, it would look something like the following list. Breakin The Chains (Breakin The Chains album) When Heaven Comes Down (Tooth and Nail) Turn On The Action (Tooth And Nail) Unchain The Night (Under Lock And Key) Lightnin Strikes Again (Under Lock And Key) Sleepless Nights (Back For The Attack) Mr Scary (Beast From The East live version)
Funny in the end of the reaction you said about how they tried bring George's guitar back a little and restrain him that caused the problems that caused the band to break up.
i was a teen in the 80s! we had sooooo many iconic guitar heroes back then and Lynch was amongst the greatest. I pattern my playing after him in some ways.
Great you guys returned to Dokken. Now there are two of their tracks that are truly mighty heavier in riffs which cannot be overlook. Tackle either or these two tracks. LIGHTNING STRIKES AGAIN / TIL THE KIVIN' END. MIND-BLOWING BOTH.
When heaven comes down will blow your socks off, and then the ballad Alone again next please, which was #64 in 1984 on the Hot 100. This album is the best of the metal decade in my space.
Clicked on this reaction so quick! Dokken is one of my favorite bands with one of my favorite guitarists George Lynch! Nobody has the tones and riffs that he has! 🎸🤘🔥
Heaven sent ,the hunter they have so many great songs, breaking the chains, tooth and nail, just got lucky, alone again, unchain the night,so many great songs, walk away and on and on
You guys just have to understand the time and band. So much of it was built around George Lynch and his incredible guitar skills. The solos are perfect and are fitting to this style of music.
George Lynch is a master of guitar and yes he was way over the technical style that Don Dokken wanted but it was a love hate relationship... Don was the hook and George was the Technic My favorite Dokken song that I think shows the band at its finest moment is The Hunter it has one of the greatest guitar solos of the 80s glam/hair metal scene
Dokken is a solid 2nd tier 80s metal band. They were almost 1st tier but the band friction kept them from growing bigger. Even so they were a powerhouse with the very talented George Lynch on guitar. You should check out "Fair Warning/Tooth And Nail" combo together. That song is fire.
Also great criticisms on the solos. I like hearing more pocket playing too from musicians. A lot of times as a musician it's not about you. You gotta serve the song!
I feel like a staple of glam metal are blazing fast and testosterone-filled solos. With Dokken, George Lynch is incredible at guitar overall, riff and solo-wise, which is why I like Dokken as much as I do.
George Lynch is a phenomenal guitarist and the 80's are known for killer solos ...
One day they’ll appreciate his solos and how it fits into the song!

Heaven Sent is actually a great dokken song as well
The this about George Lynch on guitar is, he was so good that they had to let him go off.
Alone Again", "Jaded Heart", Breaking the Chains", they have a ton of good songs!
❤Dokken !! Don had a great voice. They rocked out !! Love this one.!!
They did the song dream warriors also for the movie
If I was to list some of the Dokken recommendations and then cut it in half, and then cut in half again, it would look something like the following list.
Breakin The Chains (Breakin The Chains album)
When Heaven Comes Down (Tooth and Nail)
Turn On The Action (Tooth And Nail)
Unchain The Night (Under Lock And Key)
Lightnin Strikes Again (Under Lock And Key)
Sleepless Nights (Back For The Attack)
Mr Scary (Beast From The East live version)
Rainbow in the Dark. That's where the familiarity comes from
Love Dokken! Been drumming to their songs since the 80's!!! Awesome band!!!
Omfg glad you're doing Doken u made my Weekend! Love this Song
Funny in the end of the reaction you said about how they tried bring George's guitar back a little and restrain him that caused the problems that caused the band to break up.
Very underated album and band!
i was a teen in the 80s! we had sooooo many iconic guitar heroes back then and Lynch was amongst the greatest.
Tooth and Nail is one of Dokken's best ... 🤘
"Suave" is because Don Dokken is a pimp when it comes to melody. Another good track off this album, and a sleeper at that, is "Don't Close Your Eyes".
When heaven comes down will blow your socks off, and then the ballad Alone again next please, which was #64 in 1984 on the Hot 100. This album is the best of the metal decade in my space.
Dokken has so many great songs. You guys will never know how great they are
Dokken- Maddest Hatter
You WILL NOT be disappointed!!
Clicked on this reaction so quick! Dokken is one of my favorite bands with one of my favorite guitarists George Lynch! Nobody has the tones and riffs that he has! 🎸🤘🔥
Yall really just make me smile when I see how you enjoy music that I loved and still love!!!!
The Nightmare on Elm Street part 3 song Dokken released for the soundtrack was called "Dream Warriors". It's also the movie's subtitle.
'Just got lucky' is another great Rockin with Dokken tune guys!
When Heaven Comes Down on Tooth and Nail is heavy. My favorite Dokken song.
Alone Again, Unchained The Night, Cry Of The Gypsy, or Sleepless Night are good songs to choose from.
Lynch’s main solo and outro solo are impeccable.
This was the first song that introduced them to the public on MTV.
Don had such a smooth voice back in the day.
In 1984 I was called a long haired Freak, Burnout
Head Banger and alot of awesome names.
It stands the test of time.
We were right about the Music.
Tooth and Nail is a fantastic album !! This song is great along with “You just got lucky” is another banger off this album…..
You can't go wrong with Dokken, I must wore out my cassette with Def Leppard when they first came out. Still one of my favs to this day.
George Lynch = one of the best guitarist of this Genre
George Lynch is an absolute wizard on a guitar. Great band, great song.
Unchain the Night is a killer tune oh man I miss the 80s
George Lynch's guitar tone from this era thru Back For the Attack is my favorite guitar tone of all time.
80's era has far more positive reaction youtubers MORE than any other era. PROVES that 80's was OUR best era musically so far.
Dream Warriors was the Nightmare on Elm song. This song was out before the movie. Try The Hunter. The guitar solo won a music award.
You need an all out Dokken onslaught...Mr Scary!!!!!
Great reaction……..🔥 lynch sounds even better live 🎸❤️🔥
