      Warren DeMartini is a very underrated guitarist. He doesn't get the recognition he deserves as a true badass. Stephen Pearcy is a great vocalist too. He has a unique voice when you hear it, you know exactly who it is. You mentioned "Lay It Down" which is a gritty, nasty song, but so many others on the Out of the Cellar album are so awesome. Lack of Communication, Back For More, and my personal favorite, Wanted Man are definitely worth a listen also.

      Agreed. Not my favorite genre, but so many incredibly talented musicians get overlooked and under appreciated these days because hair metal is one of the only "retro" genres that is looked back upon as silly instead of cool, for most people. I would say Nu Metal has a similar situation, some really great musicians in some bands that just don't get any respect because the mainstream thinks the genre is not worthy of being looked at with rose colored glasses.

      TRUE THAT, brother! George Lynch, Jake E. Lee, Vito Bratta, Akira Takasaki (Loudness) Reb Beach....to name a few. Warren absolutely sizzles with genius riffs and tasty solos-a highly melodic player who exudes class with his fretwork! EVH was oxygen for me-he is the most "musical" of all guitarists, his melodic sense won't be equaled-he and Jimmy Page. stay safe and great post!

      Yes, awesome 80's band. During that time in L.A. These were the bands playing the circuit. GnR, Ratt, Poison, Van Halen, Crue, Cinderella. They all knew each other and a lot of them partied with each other. Slash actually was hired by Poison but refused to do the "Glam Metal" look. In fact right before the audition he walked into a second hand store across the street, saw the stovepipe hat and well.....the rest is history.

Also a master of weaving major and minor patterns over chord progressions that made those kind of shifts. Lay it Down is a great example. Very memorable solo with simple yet catchy lines and reserved use of high speed phrasing.

    One last thing guys, lol, I actually really like the thing you did at the end where you listened to a couple snippets of other songs. That'd be cool if you did sort of a "Reaction To A Band" sort of video where you listened to a handful of the biggest requests to get the overall vibe.
    I understand many songs need their own video and reactions from top to bottom, but we need to be realistic, I thought the bit at the end of this video was really cool, and Honestly, for something like this Glam/Hair Metal Marathon, most songs are going to follow the basic Verse/Chorus/Verse/Chorus/Bridge/Chorus/Chorus Formula, including some sick solos of course, and some songs have some really dope parts, so I'm not knocking that, but what I'm saying is if you listen to the first 90 seconds you're going to get the vibe of 90% of the songs from this genre. Just a potential idea, especially if you do a poll or something where you have a handful of songs that people want that may spread a bunch of different vibes.

    You guys were dead on in your analysis of this song and Ratt. Of all the hair metal bands influenced by Van Halen, Ratt were the band that took that influence most seriously, and you can definitely hear it in the riffing. In fact, Lay It Down sounds rather similar to Unchained. For the all the shit that 80s hair metal receives, one undeniable fact is that the 80s were the golden age of phenomenal guitarists. Warren DeMartini was one of them, and extremely underrated. Beyond that, though, George Lynch, Steve Vai, Paul Gilbert, Vito Bratta, Nuno Bettencourt, Jason Becker, Michael Angelo Batio... even the more "mainstream" guys like Richie Sambora, CC Deville, and Mick Mars were excellent.
    BTW, you guys will really be missing out if you don't hear Whitesnake's Still of the Night and Warrant's Uncle Tom's Cabin. Two of the better songs from that era of bands.

    This may have been the song of theirs that crossed into pop/rock territory the most. It was certainly a great choice of song to introduce them to the masses during the summer of '84. I remember it being played on radio constantly, and it sounded like nothing I'd ever heard before. Plenty of their stuff is much heavier hitting, yet all of it is very listenable while also rocking. Underrated glam metal band, for sure. Just a ton of fun to listen to them!

    • @nancysmith8626
      @nancysmith8626 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @LF X , we could argue all day long about how to classify certain types of music and never come to an exact agreement about it. Nonetheless I agree that they are essentially a metal band. By "pop" I simply meant that I first heard this song on radio stations that played "popular" music - what was termed "Top 40" at the time, and I would say a variety of genres actually fell under the "popular music" designation. What's so wrong with that?
