My late husband Jacob felt he could relate to Johnny Cash. He had been addicted to drugs and alcohol for a long time while being homeless and downtrodden himself. When God took hold of him, he ended up crawling up out of that deep darkness when the Lord intervened. That was when I met Jacob in church. We had been together almost four years when in January, Jacob lost his battle to Covid. He always told me that his body was worn out and he was ready to go see the Lord.

As someone who has always wrestled with his faith and doing the right thing and treating other’s fairly and wondering if I am saved or condemned, and sometimes full of joy and hope and other times more full of despair and woe : this song and in particular Johnny’s vocals , cut to the very core of my soul.

Salvation isn't based on your performance. Jesus paid your penalty. Humbly admit you are a sinner that needs His forgiveness and simply take the free gift in faith. That's why it's called the good news. You're free my friend. Thank God for it because none of us would make it!

However, if you go back and really listen to all Johnny Cash’s music, even his earliest stuff, you can clearly hear that Mr. Cash always leaned towards the darker side of things/life, and his music more than reflected that. For much of his life, starting from when he was little boy, Johnny Cash was somewhat of a tortured soul, and his music more than reflects that. Johnny Cash was dark to begin with, and this was just a couple of notches above that but not too much more. 🤷🏻♀️
