    The Pyxis OLPF is also an IR Cut filter. Just make sure that error gets pointed out.

      totally... basically all cameras have one, this way or the other. If you see images of a camera that has a "red" looking sensor, that is a "hot mirror" attached to the sensor reflecting infra red.

    Blackmagic and Panasonic are both fantastic camera makers. The S5ii and Pocket/Pyxis 2 camera combo is brilliant with the L Mount lenses, particularly if you also shoot timelapse and stills. Nothing beats the Blackmagic UI and image quality for the money, it also appears as though they are applying extraordinary levels of quality control for the Pyxis shipments with the delays.

      Or there is an issue they aint being as up front as they can be. I have the EVA, S1 and S1H. All fantastic and what Panasonic give to its customers has always been slightly ahead of the curve. And to be fair, Blackmagic do too. But their QC leaves a lot to be desired. Personally, I'm delighted they are on the scene and don't mind taking the punt on their cameras for what they can serve up UI with some of their colour implementation, at the risk of falling foul of their QC issues. Think I shall wait a few months and do some testing before pulling the trigger on the Pyxis 6. Im also looking at the 12k OLPF as I'm agnostic on 35mm Vs Full frame. @thesaveagefilmmaker Keep the great content coming mate.

    I shoot on Panasonic EVA1 and S1H cameras, and both produce great images. The S1H is obviously smaller and full frame, but the EVA1 is a great work horse of a camera. The built in ND filters, dual XLR inputs, SDI/HDMI and time code are important for corporate and documentary work. You can find used EVA1 cameras for under $2k. I am tempted by some of the new cameras, but what I have still meets all my needs.
    The Pyxis produces wonderful images and is a great value. I do like the form factor, but I would need another $1k in accessories and media to make it shoot ready. However, NONE of my clients accept BRAW files, so the lack of ProRes is an issue for me. I hope Black Magic adds ProRes as a firmware update, an articulating side screen and internal ND filters in a "pro" version down the road. I'm glad to see Black Magic improve the build quality and curious to see what they come up with next.

    Was talking about the eva1 to a DP last month… he knew it very well, he told me many tv series are still shot with it nowadays and some of them shooting all day every day since the it came out. he praised the EVA1 quality of the internal recording (apparently they shoot so much that data size is very important… that always surprise me on bigger budget projects, but I guess more data to move around is also more work/risk) and they praise its reliability.
    I ve seen some showreels of filmmakers whose best shots were clearly on the EVA1 … while the rest is shot on red…
    TBH I’d love to get one to play around but don’t have the projects for such a camera. I work with both an s5 II (corporate films) and gh7 (sports live and sports docs) which aren’t far in terms of IQ and have so many advantages ;)

      Amazing camera, criminally underrated. It's the practicality of this camera that hold it back a bit in 2024, wish it was L-mount. I find that my projects gravitate to my other cameras also, which is a shame. Sounds like you've got yourself an amazing 1-2 combo.

  • @verebellus

    I think a few of the comparisons here are slightly flawed. Eva1 does indeed have ND filters, but also is stuck with Canon EF mount whilst the Pyxis has an L mount which is arguable more flexible (which you touched on). The reason the pyxis can be the price it is is because it doesnt offset the price to include a prores license, and it includes DaVinci Resolve Studio. And to unlock the "full" potential of the Eva1 and S5IIX, youd need a Video Assist, which if you also put that on the Pyxis, you now have a great monitor to also record backup video, more audio and you can convert the SDI signal to HDMI for a transmitter and such. (i wish the video assist could control blackmagic cameras)

    Been using the EVA1 for over 4 years now. For docu work it is still an amazing camera. I have even been using the 50mbit 1080p mostly which in my comparisons are only a little bit behind the 4k but way smaller file sizes (looks about the same after youtube compression anyway). But the way biggest feature for a docu shooter in the EVA1 compared to say the S5 is the pre rec function (10s in 1080p mode and 5s in 4k). That has been the biggest feature for me not moving fulltime to my S5 mk ii. But also, the V-Log from the EVA, there is something more to it compared to the mirrorless cameras.

    • @thesavagefilmmaker
      @thesavagefilmmaker  18 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      It really depends on the lenses you like to use and whether you rely on auto-focus. Also the amount of space you're willing to chew through. Best image is the Pyxis, most flexible is the s5iix. The Eva1 gives you a nicer image than the s5iix, but you don't get auto-focus or IBIS. But it does have nice ergonomics, XLR etc. I'd probably pick Pyxis as long as you have plenty of room for storage and were using cine lenses. But would probably need to understand the doc requirements more.

      @@thesavagefilmmakerthanks for the feedback. The doc will be a feature length piece and needs to meet “Netflix” or rather industry standards for potential distribution. My role for the doc is director/dop. For 80% of the shots I’ll be behind the camera or setting it up. Some of the shots will be run and gun, filming in parks or outside on the go, otherwise I’ll be setting up for talking head interviews.

    People don't realize that the big companies have different engineering groups for their cinema line verses mirrorless line of cameras. Canon made a major breakthrough with the R5C in that management made the cinema engineers turn their menu system and operations over to the mirrorless group. So when Panasonic released the EVA 1 it was designed in the Varicam engineering group so the menus you see are the Varicam menus. The Varicam cameras were big, heavy and bullet proof, you could stand on one so everyone was scratching their heads when the plastic EVA 1 came out. The operation and color science is from the Varicam cinema group which is why the skin color is better in your example. Also you can totally blow the sky out and recover it ( if shooting raw ) which can't be done in the mirrorless line. I loved my EVA 1 but the experiment ended there and so did the Varicams. I'm sure some of the cinema engineers made it over to the mirrorless group as we're getting great video operations out of the Panasonic cams. I always put a nice monitor on my EVA 1 and I moved their useless monitor to the side of the camera just showing status. Mostly the left side. Like the Pyxis. Which I'll have the same setup when mine gets delivered.

      While that is true the 12K has a crazy super 16 crop in 4K 240 and the same thing goes for the G2. The G2 windows in aggressively with a 2.66x crop which is even smaller than super 16. The Panasonic EVA1 also windows in on the sensor in 240fps but only to a M43 size so it has a 2.42x larger image area than the 12K and even bigger image area than that of the G2 in their highest frame rates and it does all of that even though it's almost half a decade older. In the same frame rate it's comparable i believe. So.. Yeah.. There's that little thing everyone seemed to forget.
      The Pyxis uses the same Sony (IMX410) sensor as the A7III and also the Nikon Z6, Z6II, Lumix S5, S1, S1H and also a variant of the new S5II and S5IIX as well as the S9. It also shares that sensor with the Blackmagic FF 6K. That sensor has a theoretical limit of 4K 48fps in full frame mode but no one of these cameras to the best of my knowledge allows for that which is why they all revert to a S35 crop in higher frame rates in 4K. Pretty sure the author of this video didn't mean it could shoot in higher frame rate than any Blackmagic camera but any blackmagic camera that shares this sensor and or are in the lower end market. The 12K and G2 are all several times the price of all these cameras and especially the EVA1 today and it can still match these cameras and vastly out preform BM's offering in the lower price bracket. The Ursa 12K was also released in 2020 which was a few years after the EVA1 and it was priced quite a lot higher than the EVA1 (at least in my country). The G2 however was around the same price point though but it's almost half a decade newer so there's that.
      Anyway, the Pyxis is behind most categories compared to it's siblings even though they are many many years older and the same thing goes for the EVA1 which is interesting. Doesn't mean it's bad but it lacks some very fundamental things and imo the biggest issue is it uses a variant (if not the exact same) sensor as a 7 year old Sony camera. And that it only records in RAW which is a blatant stunt to try to force people into their proprietary RAW workflow which is sad as it absolutely handcuffs this camera to one specific workflow.

      @@LiamMarskog The Ursa mini pro G2 actually shoots up to 120fps full sensor not 60. I think it was the G1 that could only go up to 60.

    • @LiamMarskog
      @LiamMarskog 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@alanlavery that's true, it windows in at 150fps. Either way, it has a substantial crop in those higher frame rates and especially in it's highest frame rate. Not saying one is better or worse, just that these BM cameras have a MASSIVE crop at those high frame rates. Also my over all point was that these two cameras and the newer ones (12K Cine for example) are not the cameras OP was talking about. Pretty sure he was just talking about the comparable ones in the Pocket line.

    The EVA1 definitely doesn't have IBIS. It's stabilization is purely electronic. And the Pyxis is actually better if you want stabilized footage as it records gyro data to the video file and is very easy to stabilize in resolve.

    • @LiamMarskog
      @LiamMarskog 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There's only one camera on the market with built in ND's and IBIS which is the Sony Burano released at $25K+ in 2024.
      The EVA1 does not have gryo but it does have EIS which uses sensor data to stabilize the image which works very well. Probably not as well as the Pyxis gyro but it's also close to a decade older so that's understandable.
      Imo the lack of gyro isn't as big of a problem as the lack of good I/O and ProRes in the Pyxis. Those are mortal sins for most people i know which is probably why it hasn't been extremely popular.
