My god, the amount of work you're putting into your reviews.... MADNESS!!! Thank you so much! I believe what we'd all like to see is a comparison with the Komodo and your thoughts on whether the gap might get closed over time. If to some degree it isn't already for some shooters.
EDIT: A comparison to the latest and greatest C80 and C400 would be great. Thank you so much for this review. All of these other youtubers out there tell us how they liked the camera but barely compare any synthetic info. But in a review this is (against of the opinion of many of yall out there) incredibly important because thats the only way I can judge wether or not a camera can fulfill MY specific usecase. It may work great for yours, but maybe it doesnt for mine. Especially thanks for that rolling shutter comparison, I realised that the 3:2 Open gate and 6:5 anamorphic mode may be nice for anamorphic recording even up to 2x squeezes you'd get from Atlas Orion Lenses but panning with a 200mm 2x squeeze will give you extremely messed up results. But that'd probably apply even to an FX3 since 200mm 2x squeeze is a rolling shutter worst case scenario. But such slow rolling shutter definitely limits the PYXIS' anamorphic any other super fast pace capabilities despite its 3:2 open gate recording. Its probably better suited for less super fast pace camera movements. Its not a bad camera - its incredible. I'd definitely look at it as a B-Cam for now.
Great review I just subscribed, this will be my first camera, first cinema camera and I can already tell it’ll be my dream setup because it’s so malleable
Great review, probably the best and more balanced I've watched so far, thanks! A list of things I think they really have to addressed however are: 48p but NOT 50p in 6K16:9 (guess the same for 17:9), only one codec available, sensor performances and readout not terrible but certainly could be improved, just ONE mini XLR (hope at least would be able to record simultaneously multiple tracks from the single xlr and the 3.5 jack), not rotating screen layout, it can't (as far as I know) record on both Cfe cards at the same time, NO tally lights (leds are expensive those days) and commands only on the operator side, moreover with a rec button that got locked as well if you lock the other keys. Definitely also need extra handle with rs functions and the bm external monitor (wish they could introduce also a slightly bigger 7 inches version with reduced bezels) to change the menu while operating the camera (even this you may not be able to use the bm viewfinder at that point. Glad your mentioned that despite the competitive price of this camera, it can't just be used as it is out of the box (somehow similarly as with Red cameras), those added cost to me putts pyxis more in line with other offerings from Canon or Sony.
Great review, thanks for taking the time to go over everything, ESPECIALLY that the USB-C port will work for run/stop with some handles and cables. Really wanted to know that one. update: I can confirm that the Tilta cable mentioned does not work with two different Smallrig RS handles with USB-C connections i just tested. Ordered the power advanced Tilta now.
if you like un-usable rolling shutter and having to justify why dont have a Sony/Canon/Arri/Red to the clients or agencies so you can NOT get the job... sure great camera. Good luck getting past the BMD stigma and even the Sony Burano is like DAMN that RS is BAD. This is a personal cinema camera at best, dont drink BMD koolaid.... IT WONT GET YOU JOBS at least in the USA
@@NoSuRReNDeR001 Because it is so, so difficult to put 90%-95% safety margin guideline, enter camera metadata and select “gyro” in DaVinci to essentially eliminate the rolling shutter. If Greg Fraser loves BMD I don’t think I need pucker up to some agency or client to convince them of anything. As long as the tool (camera) has what is needed for the job, and my reel showcases what they want, that’s all that matters. This camera is fantastic.
@@NoSuRReNDeR001 Because it's so, so, so difficult to use 90-95% safe margins, enter the lens metadata (which can also be done in post), and then under "gyro" in DaVinci Resolve set it to "0" and wait 2 seconds for the rolling shutter to be essentially eliminated.
For accessories, the BMD top handle is $200 USD, for just the handle!! There are third-party top plates and handles you could get that are combined at a lower price. There's also a sizeable jump in price from the no-frills pyxis monitor kit, to the mid-tier kit. IMO you are better off just getting a magic arm or third-party rotating mount and cheap USB-C cable.
Sold my 6K Pro simply because I didn't like the form factor. Far too big. Far too clunky. And because of that, I was always reaching for my Panasonic instead. But the Pyxis looks like an excellent alternative. And those skin tones and the overall colour science coming out of the Pyxis simply exquisite! I guess that means I'm getting back into the Blackmagic ecosystem again. Brilliant!
Why does no one (including CVP) point out the fact it doesn't have de-squeeze preview options? I know it's not available for the 6k ff but if it's not available with their monitor you can purchase, you really can't use anamorphics. And with a 3:2 sized sensor, that is a crime! Did I miss that part in the video? it's pretty long so I'm hoping I did :)
Would love to see a comparison between the Pyxis, and Z Cam F6 series. Especially with the later firmware updates to the Z Cam, resolving some of their earlier issues.
Such a thorough review! 🙏 It'd be great to see you compared the Pyxis image quality and options to Canon's C80, given that it'd be a somewhat close price point and size.
I wonder why you changed settings to ARRI LogC4? I tried the same testand it looks exactly identical if I keep it Film gen 5 and color space transform it to rec709
I would like to see the Pyxis and C80 compared. I think they end up equivalent in price when you consider the need for a monitor, grip/handle, and a rear ND solution. With the pyxis (or any box camera) its similar to the red ecosystem in that the cost of the camera doesn't reflect the cost to make it functional.
if it aint broken don't fix it, my 6k and 4k bmc cameras work great and i don't look like a wannabe while getting equal to if not better results. TBC you showed yourself almost entirely in run n gun scenarios where the original form factor smokes this box, i'll save thousands, thanx for the review👍
I hope Blackmagic/CVP offer the monitor mounting options separately at some point. I can see getting the monitor on it's own if you already have some mounting options and then later wanting to change to the BM system (for whatever reason) but it not being available without the monitor.
@cvp I had a genuine question, since I am planning to buy the Pyxis and a Digitalfoto Procine Steadicam rig together, I have been trying to figure out a solution to convert 12G SDI output from the Pyxis into a Steadicam rig which can only take a 3G SDI input, I definitely am not keen on blowing out any equipment so if there’s a solution then I would love to see that. I think part of a solution might be related to the viewfinder Type C port, but then I’ll have to put up 2 converters such as from type C to HDMI and then HDMI to 3G SDI converter I guess. I hope there’s an easier solution that I don’t know about yet. Thanks a ton in advance and thank you for a in-depth review as well. I had been eagerly waiting waiting for it.
Ok guys, lets be honest. I have been waiting for Pyxis for more than half a year, and I'm not alone. Many things have happened in the industry in the meantime and unfortunately, I`m already waiting for Fuji XM5, not Pyxis. Lest talk about prices and availability, ok? When (again) it Pyxis going to hit the marker? For how much? I'm an owner of EOS400D, BMPCC4K, EM10m3, OM1m1 and many m43 lenses. Many products have entered the market in the meantime - is BMD willing to correct their course? What are they going to do and when? I love the USB web camera functionality introduced recently in BMD camera firmware (my ATEM PRO ISO has been unplugged indefinitely). But what happens after that? Cheers!
I feel like a future revision with slightly higher dynamic range (not that the current one is bad, but we have clearly seen that Blackmagic can do even better with their own sensors) and internal NDs would be my end-game dream camera. Sacrificing internal NDs is a hard pill to swallow for me coming from the near-perfect BMPCC6K Pro.
Can you explain please more on Super 35 mode for this that a new system for me I am from Sony and want RAW so considering buying this camera and potential saving on super 35 lenses like Lawoa S35 Ranger
It is a pretty nice camera. But it annoys me that it can only shoot in BRAW. ProRes or maybe another ALL-I Codec would be nice to have, because you don´t need RAW for every project. And hopefully we will get a Pro Version of the Pyxis with Internal ND.
The battery limitations sucks but also makes sense. Sony can accurately read their battery life, and produce accurate runtimes. Looks like Blackmagic can’t talk to the Sony batteries and just reads voltage.
The issue with the pyxis is that it doesnt offer a compelling reason to upgrade to it even over my original pocket 6k. to many iterations that dont create substantial value increases.
the review everyone was waiting on.
EXAAAACTLYYY
Big facts
Brilliant detailed overview as always. Incredible that a retail site does all this work.
Amazing breakdowns for sure. I can't imagine how much time these require to make.
Dope
Still crazy blackmagic doesn't offer preview de-squeeze options with a 3:2 sized sensor. Not even CVP is addressing this.
Ursa cine 12k and 17k
We need it
I love that you are actually objective and treat cameras like the tools they are, always fair and balanced, no 'fan boys' of any one brand.
Great review as always guys! They really nailed the form factor and build quality on this one :).
Please review the Ursa Cine 12K!!
The “spamming button” autofocus is hilarious 😂

THE BEST Blackmagic PYXIS 6K REVIEW
Such a BEAUTIFUL image!! 🙌🏾
I'd love to see this compared to the Lumix BS1H. As the two box camera options for L-Mount, I think they'd make for an interesting comparison.
The rolling shutter shutters everyone that reviewed forget to mention that but the colors are so good black magic is doing great things for us
Rolling shutter can be fixed in Resolve. Blackmagic created a plugin in Resolve specifically for this issue.
THIS is the review i was waiting on.
Love rhe image from the camera.
Great video, as always! Would love a comparison to Canon C80/400
The review that I've been eagerly waiting for 😅
Wow. both the camera and the review. Subbed! Thank you.
Can't wait to see the Ursa Cine 12K review!
It's next on our list! Jake
