Good video pete Great that you are back to your sports I am 4 months out from my second total hip in the last year and 58 yrs old After this last hip , I had some femoral nerve injury and palsy in my quads that has almost totally resolved now I started Pilates at 6 weeks which really helped me recovery . I’ve been in the gym almost daily since week 3 , ride the stationary bike daily since week2 I’m training hard to get back to skiing next season so i have just started back to cross fit and it’s feeling great doing dead lifts , squats , box jumps, burpees etc . I did water ski last year 6 months after my first hip but haven’t downhill skied yet . It will be 10-12 months post when I get out next winter which I feel is a good period of healing . I will be wearing padded freestyle shorts just in case and I won’t be doing anything too crazy but can’t wait to get out there And I will be returning to old timers hockey next winter also I completely forget I’ve had it done they feel so natural and I’m so thankful to not be in arthritis pain any longer Thanx for posting
Thanks for the feedback and background on your hip journey. Sounds like you've got a plan to get you back on the slopes next season. Workout and Abs today, maybe a bike ride if the weather holds. Volleyball tomorrow! 💪😎
This is an excellent and informative video that has helped me so much. It is CONTRARY to advice I got from my doctor and physical therapists. I am totally sold that these baby steps are the way. I am a highly competitive tennis player age 72.
At 55, you are still young. So I'm almost 70, and I'm about 8 weeks PO. I do spend about 2 to 3 hours six days a week in the gym. My goal is to get back into hiking shape. Normally, I'm on trails 2 to 3 days a week year round. My surgeon wants me to hold off being on trails due to the risk of falling. Skiing, my doctor said skip this season. Motorcycle riding is my other big hobby. My doctor is not too keen on that. I guess I might slow it down a bit. Thanks for the info.
I've been on the Dragon over 75 times, including late at night. Besides my motorcycle, I've been on the Dragon in my C-7 Z51 and in my M-3. Once we broke a recod with the most Vettes on the Dragon. My advice is not to go on a weekend or holiday. There are too many crazies out. It's hard to believe Inca Trail before surgery. I went to Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, and Colorado for some hiking. By the time we got out west, I could barely walk. Most of the hikes got canceled l.
75 times, that's crazy! I've been once in my Lotus Elise SC, but it's a brutally long trip there and back from Raleigh. Hope to make it there soon though in my Alfa 4C before I have to part with in in Feb or March. Watching for a break in the weather that would allow a trip!
I lived fairly close. Plus I would meet friends for a week, and we would be on it 2 to 4 times a day. The Tapoco lodge is close by, and it's a fun place to stay.
Yeah, that's where I stayed the one time that I went. And I did like you suggested....arrive Sunday night and drove it on a Monday morning (non-holiday).
Thanks for doing this video. I'm almost 50 and just had THR done in November 2023. Putting in the work to get as strong and flexible as possible and hopefully will be able to play some beach 2's at some point this summer. Will start slow (maybe some peppering, warming up other players and a little bit of setting). Do you go full out when playing or do you play conservatively/safe? Any concerns with diving? Thanks again :)
My pleasure, thanks for watching! Glad to connect with another hippie who plays beach doubles volleyball. By nature I'm a fairly conservative/safe player ... not one of those guys diving for every ball. But by 9 or 10 months post-op I knew from the research that my implant stem was fully integrated as it was going to be and from my Doc he said "at this stage if you break something, it probably won't be the new hip". So up until 9 or 10 months I really held off diving, but was otherwise playing pretty normally. After that point, I'm diving as much as I ever did...maybe a little more. ;) Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes getting back into vball. I will say, if you were fit before surgery, take everything slow so as not to injure something else. In addition to the healing of your THR, your body is probably adjusting to a new normal. I'm struggling with a back issue (illiolumbar tendon sprain) that I think was from overly aggressive abs workouts as I was trying to regain my fitness around 4 months post-op.
Pete, Canyon give us some idea of how bad your hop was and how much pain before you decided to go ahead with surgery. I'm still undecided if I'm bad enough
Maggie, Good to see you on YT. If you watch my first Vlog #1, I talk about my decision making process, so that might help. I was in a lot of pain for about 6 months before being properly diagnosed as OA in my hip. I suffered from groin pain and it kept me from sleeping, so that was my deciding factor. There are different ways to look at it. My Dr. said "when your hip is making choices for you it's time to have it fixed." I also recognized that continuing to suffer with it meant I would probably compensate and potentially develop other problems as a result and I wanted to avoid that. Hope this helps, Peter
@Life411 thanks Pete. Yes, like you 8ce had pain for 12 month but mine was initially much more painful and has settled. I've got 3 labral hip tears and I think that's the cause of the irritation but I have full and extremely good range of motion and sleep very well. There is a pain after I do stuff so I've started doing less. Furthermore I don't know how much pain is coming from my spinal canal stenosis, so it's hard to differentiate. I have exercised most days, for the last 40 years but the intensity is sure less now I'm 65!
Good video pete

Executive summary was a great idea.
Glad you found the Executive Summary helpful. Believe it or not, I have also had complaints about it, so good to get this positive feedback 😺

My pleasure Ron. Thanks for checking in. Have you done Tail of the Dragon on your bike?
