It does hurt but moving helps. Trust. Start slow and be kind to and listen to your body. Discomfort is OK but pain = stop. Pain isn’t bad just a sensation our body uses to talk to us. Note how many reps created actual pain. Take a day or two and try again at 1-2 reps below what caused pain. Use heat, ice etc (whatever works for you) after each set of exercises. Also try micro doses of them by 1-2 exercises during day - waiting for microwave or stove, talking on phone, brushing teeth etc. Bal with ones to loosen and relax hips and pelvic floor muscles - start slow again and listen to your body. Just search YT incl Feldenkrais by Taro. Doing something consistently is better then nothing - within YOUR pain threshold. A few visits for in person assessment w/a physical therapist can help. Google your area and read staff bios or call for their experience w/ YOUR situation. It sounds cliche but relaxing incl meditation etc esp at night and when stressed helps (or laughing even crying). Anxiety/anger triggers cortisol that can incr inflammation. Not bad but whole other topic for you to google. Our mind is very powerful. Hope any of this helps. There is light. FWIW I’ve had chronic pain incl OA for ~25 yrs. It’s taught me a lot. Namaste PS: Never compare. Focus on your body and path.

I agree. I had no idea what was going on with this injury - couldn’t find it! I am (67) and still playing competitive basketball, tennis and also cycling. I’m not a drug-store solution dude. Yes, lots of these injuries happen due to age. But, it happens due to stopping!!! Keep going folks, just stretch and workout more consistently. For cyclists, our sport is a body tightening machine. You must stretch before, during and after - especially on off days. MORE VIDEOS LIKE THIS PLEASE!

wow.I am a 77 year old ex-dancer with a PhD. in Dance Education! I am also scheduled for either a cortisone shot or a hip replacement. NONE of my doctors recommended strengthening exercises. And I did not think for myself. I am so grateful. I know these exercises, of course, in fact, I spent 3 years in Paris doing the CANCAN! But I panicked because of the actual pain. I so appreciate your tough-talking encouragement. Just what I needed. A literal kick in the butt.

Thank you for the great exercise. I am still young and the doctor advise to have a hip replacement after having an MRI. I had physiotherapy, which did not help but none of these exercises were prescribed .... The pain only started a few months ago with not having any pain before, which is weird to me. And, I have always done sport, ballet dancing, swimming, thai chi ... and never had any injuries nor pain in my hip.. So their prognostic makes no sense to me ...

I work in physical therapy with the geriatric population. I explain to people every day that I will not be able to help the joint itself, but I can strengthen all the muscles around the joint for added stability, increased mobility, and way less pain. Sadly, the majority of people do not want to put in the effort and opt for some form of surgery. Then I see them again in a few months, still in pain (or worse pain), and we go back to square one. The body is amazing and can heal itself from just about anything if given the correct tools.

Hi Matt! I’ve been living with chronic pain since early 2001. I’ve tried injections in my spine and have been on numerous medications. The fact is, these treatments amount to placing a band aide on an severe deep cut. In other words, not efficient enough to truly help. I’ve had physical therapy, but therapists can’t do anything after you go home. I appreciate your approach to pain. Treating the entire body to pain relief that can be attained. You are very knowledgeable for being so young. You seriously look like my son…lol. Most times, I feel that youth is wasted on the young. Not true for you! You are helping my body get fit and giving me an active life again. I feel reborn! Thank you son for posting these videos! You’re very fun to watch and I even forget I’m working out! Hello everyone. It's a little trickier than just strengthening. I have watched, followed and did every exercise that Matt recommends for the past 5 years. First, it has helped me become much more flexible as I started with a completely locked left hip. I'm still not able to go for long walks without suffering for a day or 2 afterwards. It's not just your hips when your whole body has been misaligned for many years. When my hips loosen up, then it's my neck and shoulder that hurts. I still do these exercises, but I have started also doing Pete Egoscue's , Pain Free (new edition) book movements. You must relax the tight muscles to get your body back into full alignment. It's working along with the strengthening. I'm 71 and have avoided ship replacement for 6 years.

OMG! I love this video. I was diagnosed with OA in the hip but am told the pain I describe does not coincide with the degree of damage in the joint. PT did not help me...they were way to aggressive and hurt, setting me back even more. I have since determined that I have three things going on with the whole joint (bursitis and tendonitis/ligamentitis included) and am putting together an arthritis management program to help. The range of motion limitation is my current issue to resolve. Your video explained more about what I can do for my issues than I got from anyone else in the healthcare world. I am going to continue stretching...I have problems straightening that joint, but I am definitely going to add these exercises to my workout regimen, perhaps alternating with walking on off days to help me keep moving.

It's absolutely possible to get stronger at 69 (my age also). I had 4 sessions with a PT, who gave me a handful of exercises to do while lying down! Yes, the progress is slow but I stay safe and comfortable while continuing "working out" on my own. The therapy sessions were a year ago and I'm now walking without a cane or a limp; starting to practice small jumps.

Congratulations on feeling better. I have degenerative hip osteoarthritis (worse in the left hip). I have gone through substantial muscle weakening, and I started back in the gym over the summer for increased cardiovascular fitness and range of motion exercise (inclined treadmill, elliptical, rowing machine, and bicycle) in addition to outside bicycling and paddle boarding to offset my decreased hiking ability. I also started weights targeting my hip adductors/abductors/flexors/extensors. They are incredibly weak, and I max out at 30-50 pounds (might not be weak for some, but this is weak for me). I am getting ready for surgery because my pain has increased, I am unable to walk pain-free without a cane, and my quality of life has diminished. I say all this because strength training might not be enough. It is not for me. I will keep strengthening my muscles in preparation for surgery to live my best active life. Good luck!

So glad I found this video. I had been having hip pain for about 4 months. The main cause was violently, improperly rotating my hips open when my golf swing went wrong for a couple months. Secondarily, my pilates class encouraged overstretching hip flexors with your knee on the pilates reformer (sled).
I knew if I went to an orthopedist, he'd probably find arthritis (I'm 61) and blame my problem on that, despite the fact that arthritis is long-term degradation and my symptoms came on in a hurry. I tried a bunch of stretches and they didn't help, and sometimes hurt. One day I just decided to rest a dumbell on my thigh and lift my knee (much like the first exercise in this video). I told the orthopedist that it was the one thing that seemed to make things better. His response was that he would expect that to make things worse, not better, and as expected, he blamed arthritis.
Lo and behold, i find this video and it recommends exactly that exercise, along with two others that also seem like they will help. I am so glad to learn from this video that there may be a muscle / training way to fix this problem. Thanks for posting it.

Matt, thank you for your hard work in uploading these videos.
I am 69 with a one year history of a painful right hip. It seemingly started after I started doing hip stretching exercises after being told by a trainer I had poor flexibility in my hips and lower extremities. Never had any bad nor hip pains before. I could have overdone the stretching exercises causing some injury by pushing on with the stretching despite warning pain symptoms. Finally was diagnosed with osteoarthritis by an orthopedic surgeon with x ray showing joint space narrowing and acetabular spurring. No bone on bone yet. After viewing a multitude of videos, I am getting to believe that muscle strengthening is the key. So I have become hooked to your videos, and am very interested in your follow along videos.

I'm in my early 40s and after having a knee pain episode for New Year's Eve and being diagnosed with patella alta with subluxation, I started physiotherapy. Soon after, my hip, groin and buttock started aching a lot, especially when sitting in the car. Aside from stiffness I seem to have the symptoms of hip arthritis. All this made me feel as if my life had suddenly ended, especially as I love being active and going to the gym. Your video gives me hope and makes me feel a bit more empowered. Thank you.

Hi Matt, thank you for demonstrating and offering to us the different exercises we can do to stretch our hips and glutes and build up our muscles in those weaker areas. I love that you suggest these exercises first before falling into the narrative that you probably hear from your doctor that “surgery” is needed to alleviate your pain (because you have “bone on bone” articulations). I think your own experience informs the information/demonstrations you present to us, and I very much appreciate what you explain and show us. Thank you!😊

I have extreme arthritis in my right hip. I started water aerobics and felt much better. Stopped for a month and relapsed. Now, I don't dare stop my water aerobics, I really enjoy walking laps in the community center's Lazy River, which simulates waves. I have also shifted my thinking, I no longer use the word "exercise," but MOVEMENT. And for me to maintain mobility as I age, I must MOVE. I love these exercises, they are easy and realistic. I know yoga is supposed to be good for you but honestly those positions are beyond my mobility capacity. I also use Dr. Christopher's ointment plus capsules, both for tissue and bones. The products are natural and do not cost much. Also, in this video, he said something VERY important, go to 11:40 in this video and MEMORIZE what he says about hip pain and X-rays. THIS INFORMATION IS A GAME CHANGER! Thank you so much for this video.

WOW! I just discovered you, Matt, this morning. I'm 65 and was diagnosed with mild arthritis in both hips a year ago after a Pickleball injury. I have done yoga 3x a week for years (thank goodness) and did lots of physio after the injury. My doc recommended a hyaluronic acid injection but I found Aquafit instead and I am improving! My yoga teacher likes to inform us about anatomy and was talking about hamstrings the other day which led me to do a little research and concluding my Biceps Femoris needs attention (as I sometimes feel heat and pain just to the left of my left knee). Looking for Biceps Femoris stretches led me to you. I've now watched the video above and am excited to have you confirm what I am experiencing ... improvement with attention to muscles. ATM Looking forward to more of your excellent videos and avoiding a hip replacement in the future. Thank you! I would very much like to see your follow up hip video. Kindest regards .... Liz

Thank you for this information and for these exercises!! I am 47, in very good shape but I live with chronic pain in my hips/lower back. I have spent so much time going to drs, chiropractors, physiotherapists etc to try to get some help but nothing has done so. These exercises are a lifesaver! This plus walking for about 1 hr a day, and gentle weight bearing yoga poses are about all I can do to keep the pain under control. Every time I try to do something else I seem to end up hurting my hips even more.

Hi Matt, after an ACL repair and ligament issues several years ago I qualified as an exercise specialist. Unfortunately over years my regime has changed with caring for a friend: after two falls last year and pain in right groin / hip and X-ray showed closure of the gap surrounding the ball and socket joint on both sides but worse on right... I know what you are saying is absolutely right and have felt better after exercising these those muscles but I have not been consistent at all and now the left side has kicked off big time with pain in leg muscles and spasms. Your video is great 👍 and giving me the motivation to get up off arse and move more. I am soon 67, my aim is to regrow Cartilage back with exercise and diet. I take collagen tablets and powder which help a lot. Would love a follow on video, many thanks. God bless you, Susanne

I am a 74-year-old senior. My doctor tells me that x-rays show that osteoarthritis is the reason I am experiencing debilitating pain in my left leg - deep in the inside of my hip area. I now often have to haul my left leg into my car because I cannot lift it up high enough to get it in the car due to pain - something I used to do without thought and more importantly without pain. The doctor prescribed Tylenol Arthritis (TA) for the pain (625 mg). I take another 325 mg of Tylenol at the same time because (TA) doesn't work very well on its own. I retired from work three years ago (June 9) because of the pain in my leg while sitting. It made it
almost impossible to concentrate when shifting my body constantly due to pain. My left leg has increasingly prevented me from doing many things. I watched this video with interest because I do believe that muscles support our skeleton and physio has helped me in the past. I've healed many aches and pains with a tennis ball but have not discovered an exercise/spot to massage with my tennis ball that will do that for my leg. I can do your exercises 2 and 3 relatively pain free (first try tonight) but can barely tolerate raising my left leg off the floor even an inch while sitting to do ex. 1. I can lift my right leg and am confident I can improve the raising of my right leg if I do these exercises regularly. Not so sure about that left one. Will doing ex. 2 and 3 make doing ex. 1 easier? Are there other exercises that can get me past experiencing the pain I currently do when trying to lift my left leg? I used to be able to walk 15 -20,000 steps a day, I dropped to 10,000 steps in 2019 but have not been able reach that goal since March 2020 when we were ordered to work from home due to COVID. I began experiencing trouble walking and ended up retiring in June 2021 due to pain I began experiencing while working. I try to get 7000 steps in a day but most days my leg just hurts too much to even accomplish that anymore. I am interested in watching your videos and am encouraged by Robert's comments below. I can hardly wait to self-heal. I believe it can be done with effort and patience.

Very inspiring. Thank you very much for underlining why and how muscle strengthening exercises (smooth, moderate, pain-free, regular, targeted) are vital for hip arthritis, despite the fact that many doctors advise against it. After each consultation with my doctor, I find myself a rebel ignoring the no-no bla-bla, going back to the net looking for the most appropriate exercises, in fact looking for validation, despite my fear of possible extra pain and pressure on my hip. I think I have found my beginner series. It’s awesome. I feel alive again especially after two years of quasi-total “immobility”. Thanks.
    - I have practiced sports and dance my whole life. I stopped practicing two+ years ago due to three bad falls and sprains (moving to our new place), one now-cured sciatica, and … severe hip arthritic pain, with acute stiffness, and some nerve pinching, only in the last 4 months or so, FOLLOWING 1 hydrocortisone injection (🤔 ???).
