Woooooohooooooo! Congratulations Gary i have to say you look pretty damn excited being back behind the wheel:) look at that little lizard free loader haha!
You look like a big kid again driving Jawbreaker around once again. 😂 as far a milk crate I would go with a low sitting beach chair. Works great for taller person. 😁 I have done it before. 😎
Glad I found you. Your engine build videos are giving me the ambition to finish my 73 squareback. I recently bought it as my 1st aircooled VW but the engine was in pieces. Thanks!
Gary, excellent work, good to see it back on the road. You might want to consider putting a rubber grommet on that fuel pipe where it passed through the front breast plate engine tin (just after your filter). That grommet was a VW service item, and the cause of many of a VW engine fire. When it isn't replaced the fuel line can rub against the tin and through vibration it will wear a hole in the metal fuel line and leak onto the engine. Cheers from Australia, Steve
Thanks man, I appreciate that! Yes, I installed the engine kinda too early. I have to remove it to do the rear trans mounts that I didn’t have in time for this video. I also didn’t have a grommet at the time but I will be installing one. Good catch!! 🤙
Hey Gary, what's up? I used to watch your videos years ago and then I didn't see them anymore.. Little did I realize that I never subscribed... Well I took care of that problem, so be gentle, I'm a newbie.. lol... Hope you're in a good mood this morning.... Gary thx for all you do for the VW community.. Take care my friend and God Bless... No laws on seats, just fasten your seat belt...
Hey man!! It happens, just glad you’re here. We’ve done a lot over the last several years so if you get bored, go check out the play lists. Appreciate you taking the time to comment and come back!
Levi only just fits in Jawbreaker, he’s grown overnight it seems, glad to see her back on the road, cool seat as well, at least the crate will keep your love spuds from overheating in the Florida sunshine ! Sounds awesome too Gary.
He’s grown up so darn fast. I’ll get some seats for it hopefully soon and get going on the repairs needed so we can take her out and about again. Appreciate ya as always sir!!
You looked like Goliath sitting on that milk crate 😄. Great Vid and glad to see her back on the street! I just noticed for the first time that you have a '75+ transaxle - I'm sure you know this, but in my opinion those are the BEST type 1 transaxles (strongest case and strongest 002 bus gears!). I finally got to replacing the diff in the smurf-mobile, so I should be getting mine back rolling again as well once this rain moves out. Also, it's good to see your son helping dad out! Thanks for posting brother!
Haha, yes sir! Sometimes it sucks being so tall lol All I know is, Jawbreaker is a ‘73 and that’s the trans that came with it years back. Seems to do pretty good especially when I had that 2054 in there. Glad you got the diff sorted out. Hope to see some update vids from you soon!
Single carb engines are so much easier to install lol I’m glad he’s back out and helping more, he really seems to enjoy it. I never push it on him, it’s up to him to come out and help.
Hi Garry, the beast is alive & sound`s great nice drive. Congrats you are lucky with the assistance from your son,he groing over your head young man👀.Greetings.Hubertus
Hey bud, Congratulations, Jawbreaker is back on the black stuff. But you gotta raise him. Too low. So thanks for sharing Jawbreakers return to the land of the living. ✌️ Peace from Melbourne Australia.
My first car was a 59 ghia. When I had it running my dad taught me standard while we sat on milk crates because I didnt have seats yet. Thanks for triggering a memory!
I drove mine yesterday on a milkcrate also but it is missing underload on small grades or hills any idea whats going on with it?Great job on your car Thank-you.
@@crankysrandomjunk8510 thanks! That’s just a cut and buff plus a diy ceramic coat kit. All of that was done about 3-4 years ago and hasn’t been touched since.
Gary, quick question about clutches. I know you go to great pains to balance all things "engine" but here I see you install the clutch disc and plate without any pre-checks. Are we to assume all plates and discs are in balance? If not what is the process to check and fix balance for these parts? Are there any other pre install checks (full throw compression distance? of the plate?) Thanks in advance. And sorry about the flip flop. RIP.
So, basically the clutches come “balanced” , depending on the manufacturer will depend on how well they do. If you want to properly balance the clutch assembly to the engine, you would need to send the entire rotating assembly including the flywheel, pressure plate and front pulley out to a machine shop that specializes in balancing the rotating assembly.
Great to see Jawbreaker back in action Gary! And what better way to celebrate the US election win (Unless you are a Democrat in which case its a great way to blast away your woes!) either way the sound of a flat four in good tune always brings a smile. EDIT: Milk crate? Well, in New Zealand I technically can't even drive mine with non-stock seats, but I swear the BMW recliners in my 68 were always in there (and fortunately the inspector at my local garage agrees!)
Haha, I didn’t plan it that way but you’re right! I’ll be smart and not take it on main roads until I get some real seats in it. No sense in taking that big of a risk.

It’s definitely nice.

Yeah that’s the plan, she is pretty low. Figure I’ll raise her up a bit so she doesn’t hit everything on the road lol
Hope all is well!

I've got Betsie at 130mm. Here in Australia the lowest is 100mm.
So awesome to hear it run. Especially with milk crate seats😄Question, where did u get those 90 degree elbows.
Thanks, had a blast taking it around!
I got them off of good old Amazon, 3/8ntp stainless steel street elbows.
