I think one of the best ways to learn translation is by translating, as ridiculous as that might sound - I did a degree in languages and starting translating from there. Using a CAT tool is a great idea. You're still essentially translating manually, but any repetitions in the document will be propagated automatically, plus you can create custom glossaries for consistency. There are also some really nice quality functions for tidying up your translation. Try CAT and you'll never go back!
