Dr. Patricia Rolland, a professional French translator, speaks at the University of Hawaii about Computer Assisted Translation tools. Sponsored by the Center for Interpretation & Translation Studies.
I completely accept that CAT is necessary and indispensable for any commercial translator. What I do question, however, is the value of a TM that can give as many as 200 suggested translations for a segment (or part of). Is it really going to happen that a busy translator will scan though any but the first three or four prompts? By analogy, who bothers to go to the second page on a Google search? The point of my question is, is there a danger that the translator could gradually sacrifice their creativity, and in essence become, themselves, a machine translator? Albeit utilising their own historic database.
I will allow the speaker to respond to you, but actually, you can limit the TM for a certain topic area. Plus, your creativity will never stop. But when you have to translate the same "disclaimer" over and over, it's so nice to pull up a previous translation and plug it in, as your creativity was already put to work the first time you did it!
@@suezeng9584 I am from Laos. I am interested in using CAT tool and want to install it into my Computer but unfortunately I do not understand how to use it and install it, could you please videoing how to use install and use it?
great informative, My one question is, are we using our own TM data base from our own previous works? or the system looks for all the data base available to it even from others? also is it possible to work offline,or not? as the data base is on cloud

At 7:00 - 45,000/300 = 150 brochures. The document word count appears to be out by an approximate factor of 10.
Thank you for letting us know!

If I want to use a CAT tool for subtitle translation can it typically remove the timestamps from the file?
Let me find out
Does anybody know what cat tool ACROSS PE/WEB is? Anybody used it? Is it good? BTW the lecturer is Susan Sarandon's lost twin.:)
I"ve never used it, but the Susan Sarandon reference is spot on!
